Shanahan confirms Grossman is Redskins’ starter

New York Giants v Washington Redskins Getty Images

Mike Shanahan said during training camp that he wouldn’t announce his starting quarterback until “right before” kickoff of the Redskins’ Week 1 game against the Giants. Instead, Shanahan has announced it six days in advance: He’s going with Rex Grossman.

The Redskins’ head coach confirmed today that Grossman won the starting job over John Beck, confirming previous reports that the job was Grossman’s.

For most of the offseason, Beck was considered the frontrunner for the job, as Shanahan and his son and offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, had seemingly fallen in love with Beck’s potential to run their offense.

But ultimately, Shanahan has gone with the more experienced option. He’s going with Grossman.

I think the Skins will be better than people expect. Play offs? No. But better than last year.

  2. scudbot says: Sep 5, 2011 5:05 PM

Beck is a fumbler who shouldn’t even be a backup.

  3. boswivel says: Sep 5, 2011 5:06 PM

Grossman gives the Skins the best chance at Andrew Luck “right now”. If that changes and he wins a few games, they can install Beck over the bye week.

    Good luck with that.

Does it really matter? They still finish 4th in the NFC East, no matter who their QB is.

Beck’s total NFL career game action happened four years ago. In the five games he played in, he fumbled 7 times and lost 5 of them.

  22. bobbinski1229 says: Sep 5, 2011 5:26 PM

Giants don’t have a secondary… Grossman should be able to run the offense well against them… It should be fun to watch, but anyone that thought Beck was the starter from the get go is an idiot… The Shanahan’s never once said, Beck was there man… They just said they liked him as a quarterback… Grossman will perform well (remember he did lead a team to the superbowl….)… It should be a good season none the less for skins fans…

Welcome to Redskins QB roulette version 2011!

The only way Rex will survive and get them maybe 8 wins, is if the O line stays intact. They lose one starter and it’s OVER!

I do think the D will keep them in most games and win a few for them.

  47. toonsterwu says: Sep 5, 2011 7:09 PM

I don’t think the QB decision is final, in that, I highly doubt Grossman is the starter for the entire year, unless Michael Lombardi is right and the Redskins surprise and win the East.

It’s the safe choice, as the shortened offseason meant less time for them to study John Beck, and Grossman knows the offense more. He’ll be … Brian Griese for this offense (whereas I think Beck could perhaps be a borderline Jake Plummer … that said, it’s not like one is that much better than the other).

The line will be better, so the fact that they are going with the less mobile QB is … okay. The edges should be fine – Trent Williams and Jammal Brown make for a solid combo. The interior is quite questionable, though, so I expect we’ll see a lot of Darrel Young and Tim Hightower staying in to protect.

The team is improved. Enough to push for the playoffs? I don’t know. Doesn’t seem likely, but there’s a solid receiving group, a better run game (by virtue of having a RB that might stay healthy in Hightower, although you never know when an injury will happen. That said, Torain was hurt too much). The defense is better. Shame Jarvis Jenkins was hurt, but Bowen/Cofield is a big upgrade in strength and athleticism, and the LB group should be better. I still wonder if a team can spread them out, as I don’t love the CB depth.

It seems clear Shanahan has Snyder’s support. I don’t think he makes the moves he makes this offseason if he isn’t confident that he’ll at least have another year, if not two, to grow the organization. Their headed in the right direction, but it might take some time.

I totally agree. Its easy to see a team that went 6-10 and lost 6 games by 3 points or less regress. Especially In light of the fact they have

    A. Significantly upgraded their roster in almost every position. D and O Line, WR, DB, LB, RB, and some would argue QB with putrid McNugget play last year.

    B. Have very favorable schedule.

    C. 2nd year in system

    D. Flushed Turds, i.e. Albert and Donny

So yes, I think they could easily finish 0-16, although they will probably luck out and pull off a victory in the stretch where the play the Panthers, Bills, 49’ers, Dolphins, and Seahawks.

I wasn’t going to mention that I was being facetious, but someone of your limited intelligence probably needs some help. Oh… facetious is another word for sarcasm. You dont need help with sarcasm do you??

Seriously, polegojim? “Three years of rebuilding?”

FYI, this is the very beginning of only the SECOND year of Shanahan’s tenure in DC. One in which he had no offseason access to his players for meetings or OTA’s. He did, however, post a very strong draft and a solid FA signing period, in which he acquired some players who can help the team get better right away but WITHOUT breaking the bank, a la past years under Dan Snyder and Vinnie Cerrato.

You obviously have no clue what’s going on with the Redskins if you think he’s been there for three years already.

There’s a lot of trash being talked about the redskins this year. I don’t see why. The NFC east is not the best division in football, maybe the toughest, meaning they play harder than others. The NFC south is by far the best division, they have well balanced teams. Redskins could easily sneak to third or second in the east. Cowboys aren’t what they were, eagles have Vick. That’s it. Without vick that team falls apart. Giants have a banged up team. The redskins are mostly unknown. There are only 3 holdovers on offense and on defense there’s only 4-5 from last year, so when people say they suck, they just don’t know. My prediction: eagles win the division followed by redskins, then giants and last will be the cowboys.

  69. sadskinsfan89 says: Sep 5, 2011 11:13 PM
