Tavares Gooden lands with 49ers

Kellen Winslow, Tavares Gooden AP

Former Ravens linebacker Tavares Gooden quickly found a new job.

The 49ers signed Gooden on Tuesday, while releasing Antwan Applewhite. Gooden started 12 games in 2009 in Baltimore, but fell out of favor quickly.

It’s unclear if Gooden will play inside or out. If Gooden is inside, the team has only three outside linebackers.

It looks like first-round pick Aldon Smith was held off for now as a starter by Parys Haralson.  Ahmad Brooks has the other starting job; Smith will be a situational pass rusher.

Is Gooden going to be used as an OLB? I thought he was coming in as another ILB.

Besides Gooden’s position coach in 2008 and ’09 being 49ers’ now defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Gooden also played for Jim’s brother John, so seems like a great swap.

Local writers suggest Goodens former coach and current Niners DC Fangio is pleased to have a body to plug in and do what Manny Lawson did so well. And it appears this kid has a better upside when it comes to rushing the QB. Go Niners!

Who? And the 1st rd pick cant beat out the bust pick harrleson? He should have left town with the other bust draft pick manny lawson. Good thing they play in the worst division in the NFL

RaiderRob: just worry about your 1st round busts, last time you beat the niners was last century…

Haterrob is a undercover niner fan! ALways jumping on our news. What a lamo. A.Smith is a beast and coach is taking his time with him. He will see equal playing time with the rest of the OLB.

As for Gooden.. not fond of this pick up. Applewhite had a very good preseason.

Man, my heart skipped a beat there. For a minute I thought it said “Tavaris Jackson”.

    One can only hope.

    haha, where to begin.

Aldon Smith with his 4 sacks and 20 tackles in the preseason will definitely be on the field. you put a lot of stock into him not being penciled in as a starter. he will be rushing the passer.

worst division in the NFL is yours. the afc west. the 3rd best team went undefeated in the division LOL. and the chiefs got annihilated at home in their lone playoff game, while Seattle beat the New Orleans Saints.

afc west= worst division in football.
