Aaron Rodgers calls Mark Sanchez in GQ “embarrassing”

When Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez appeared on the cover of GQ magazine, posed for a fashion spread inside and gave an interview in which he was referred to as “the rock-starriest New York quarterback in decades,” we knew he’d take some grief.

As it turns out, Sanchez isn’t just taking grief in the Jets’ locker room. He’s also hearing it from other NFL quarterbacks who say they wouldn’t dare become offseason fashion models.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was shown a copy of the Sanchez GQ during an interview with ESPN Milwaukee, and he didn’t try to conceal his contempt.

“Look at this,” Rodgers said. “That’s embarrassing. Page 94 of the GQ thing here. That’s terrible.”

Page 94 of GQ features the photo you see here, with Sanchez posing in white pants and a black tank top. Rodgers doesn’t think that’s a good look. He’s right.

In any event, Rodgers says he has no interest in posing for magazine covers or otherwise seeking publicity.

“It’s just not really my style,” Rodgers said. “I like my anonymity, I like my privacy. I like being able to be the quarterback during the week and, in the offseason, just be able to do what I want to do and not have to be in the public eye.”

That approach has worked pretty well for Rodgers.

  1. Yeah, but remember that shirt he wore the day after the Super Bowl? I prefer it to the black tank top and white pants look, but I think A-Rodg could use a makeover. Handlebar mustache looking good, though.

  2. Conveniently ignoring that the shoot was done to raise interest and money for a charitable cause. But cue Jets/Sanchez/Rex bashing in 3…2…1…

  3. Aaron Rodgers mustache is terrible. And embarrassing. C’Mon Man, you play in the NFL, not Saskatchewan…

  4. Rodgers forgets that Sanchez’ female companionship of choice ( barely legal teens) finds those pictures just “hunky”.

  5. me personnally i don’t see anything wrong with what sanchez is doing as long as he produces on the field and that is something of a debate. sounds to me aaron is hatin because mark is a good looking guy and when aaron looks in the mirror he’s got them big bulging bug eyes staring back at him. not an attractive dude. aaron is a great qb but he’s goofy looking. maybe he can make the cover of Pocket Protector Pros or maybe NerdStyle.

  6. Always find it a little cringe worthy when QBs call out other QBs for stuff they do off the field, cause everyone has their own interests. I suppose people could call Rodgers’ foray into the music business “embarrassing” too.

But it’s hard to argue with Rodgers on this one. The Sanchez photos are horrible, just as bad as Alex Rodriguez kissing himself in the mirror. It’s especially bad that Sanchez is really a mediocre QB playing on a NY team full of vets, led by a brash coach. He’s never won a big game for that team and comes up small when they need their QB to carry them. Can’t say the same about Rodgers.

  7. @iainnyj

GQ and the media obviously isnt shouting about it so blame them, not us for the Jets trying to be pretty boys…

  8. That’s the difference between playing in Wisconsin and playing in New York.
That also could be the difference from winning the Superbowl after following a legend’s footsteps or carrying that gorilla on your back for not getting there.

  9. He then strapped on his imaginary wrestling belt, blew snot out of one nostril and headed back up to Title Town, USA.

  10. You want embarrassing?
    How about Sanchez’ nickname…”Sanchise?”
    Are you kidding me?
    For that guy?

    What’s wrong with NY’rs.
Once upon a time they referred to Eric Mangini as “Mangenius.”
Think about how stupid that sounds nowadays.

  11. “It’s just not really my style,” Rodgers said. “I’m ugly and can barely get laid even though I’m one of the best quarterbacks in football. I like my anonymity, I like my privacy. I like being able to be the quarterback during the week and, in the offseason, just be able to do what I want to do and not have to be in the public eye.”

  12. They should have shot it with Sanchez’s little teeny-booper girlfriend next to him and some receivers diving for misguided passes in the background.

The Jets would already have a Super Bowl if it wasn’t for Sanchez…

  13. ARGH. The Dolphins took Ronnie Brown when they could have had Rodgers… How many QB’s are we gonna miss on!?!?!

  14. honestly i dont think is that bad.. and this is coming from a dolphins fan.. T.O. does his stupid show.. chad ochocinco does all sorts of things so i dont think anything wrong when sanchez goes out and does things he likes to do. i will say this if the Jets dont get over the hump sanchez will take massive heat for this…

  15. Rodgers is so above fashion. He doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. That handlebar mustache was an accident – his manly straight razor broke half way through his shave.

  16. come on’ erin. We all know you love those little tight white pants. Sooner or later you’ll be coming out of the closet.

Rodgers is saying that because he’s jealous of sanchez’s good looks. GQ doesn’t let Neanderthals like Rodgers on the cover.

    ————-

sorry but wasn’t A-rodge the one frolicing around with Marisa Miller, Mila Kunis…

Its not A-rodge’s fault that Sean Avery took Sanchez’s girl

  18. a fluff piece for a fluffer. i wonder how sanchez can be in the nfl when he throws like a girl and catches like one, too. haa

  19. If Sanchez had 1/10th the talent Rodgers has, he would not need to prance around in these outfits squealing…

“Look at me! I’m a real fancy lad! A real fancy boy!”

  20. Scoreboard:

    GQ “wins” Sanchez – 1
    Rodgers – 0

    Superbowl
    Wins Sanchez/Ryan — 0
    Rodgers/McCarthy — 1

maybe he should spend more time in the playbook instead of in Playgirl

  21. iainnyj

i actually like sanchez; he’s not the greatest QB in the world but he plays with heart and intensity…..honestly though, that GQ spread was totally ridiculous. as far as the jets bashing….blame fat rex for that.

  22. A-Rod is a great QB, no doubt about it. Let’s be honest here–NOBODY will be asking him to model high fashion clothing any time soon. So him not modeling in GQ is by force not choice. Mark has a certain look. QB or not–you would see him doing exactly that kind of thing. I never understood the hate on guys who females find attractive…On that field though–Aaron Rodgers is a model! Great skill.

So you’re saying the only way for this charity to raise any money and interest was to dress Sanchez in white women leggings and a black bra?? There has got to be a better way raise money and interest than that.

  25. Look like he snachted an outfit from Mrs Ryan to impress the boss. I bet he is wearing open toed sandals.

  26. it is kind of embarrasing.

but I believe they share the same agent, and are friends so I think he was just busting Sanchez’ balls.

  27. Would you rather be, or have on your team, the best looking QB in the league, or QB who is currently the highest rated passer of all time and reigning Super Bowl MVP? Who cares what he looks like? He looks like a normal guy.

  28. rodgers is my favorite nfl dude. he is funny and great. how lucky are the packers? farve then farve2….

  29. Sanchize’s play on the field tends to be equally embarrassing. And before all of you Jets marks (some of you act as if you been sippin on jet fuel) give me thumbs down and tell me how wrong I am, do your homework. Mark Sanchez is very AVERAGE. As the risk of being redundant: Mark Sanchez = Jim McMahon

  30. Lol, A-Rod doesn’t have the same appeal that Sanchez does. Even if he wanted to do a GQ spread, he couldn’t. Dude looks like a methhead lumberjack.

That being said, A-Rod is also a much better QB and Sanchez does look quite ridiculous in whatever it is he’s wearing. Still, YAWN, NON-STORY.

  31. Talk about being out of place. If you dressed like that in the upper deck of a Jets game, they would dump beer over your head and try to light you on fire.

Matter of fact, I have been to hundreds of football games and I have never ever seen anybody dressed like that before in the upper deck. And unless they start singing the Star Spangled Banner from up there, I doubt I ever will.

    He looks an umbrella boy.

Whatever, Rodgers. The Jets are winning it all this year!

    ——————————

Just like last year…Oh wait, the Packers, led by a real NFL QB actually won the SB last year…

    My bad…

  35. Gotta love all the “swamp people” i.e Favre fans that still spout out whenever ANYTHING is mentioned about Rodgers..fellas, Rodgers has bagged more babes in a month than you guys will do in your lifetime…..and I am sure he’s hanging out with a lot more pretty women than your gator hunting girlfreind as well. Nobody will ever question Favres toughness on the field, but off he was a jerk and had no class. It’s nice to see a QB who knows how to dress and talk.

  36. Let’s get down to brass tacks:

That look is doing Sanchez no favors. White skinny jeans and a tank top?

Freddie Mercury thinks that might be too suggestive.

    Yikes.

  37. Looks like braylons new York essence might of rubbed off on him. Either that or Braylon dressed him. Heck maybe that’s why they didn’t resign him. Lol.

  38. Brokeback Benson absolutely loves them and plans to order about 100 copies for him and his “Room Mate” LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. I love the, “Rodgers would never be asked to model” comments.

    Ouch.

I want him playing football, period.

I couldn’t care less about photo spreads.

  40. The Jets are winning it all this year. Like they did the last two season. Heard it before. Not sure you guys bought the right pieces this year. You should try drafting. That works to.

  41. “Mark Sanchez = Jim McMahon”

Don’t insult Mcmahon like that. Atleast he could blame his mediocrity on being injured all the time. Plus he has a ring, something Sanchez will NEVER have. Atleast not as a starter.

  42. talkintrashallday you are being silly. He’s not gay-bashing. Please give me a break. Aaron Rodgers is from California and wants to be a music producer, I think he’s probably the last person in the NFL that would gay bash.

He’s pointing out how silly it is for an NFL quaterback to try and act like a J Crew model.

    Get a life.

  43. Hes right, Sanchez is a tool and will be exposed this year. However, Rodgers must have felt differently when he wore the most rediculous ‘zoot’ suite I’ve ever seen to the Kentucky Derby last year.

  44. ubummer says: Sep 7, 2011 11:56 AM

    ======================================
Agreed. I like Rodgers but this also comes off as petty and a little jealous. Aaron should have passed on commenting, but then what ‘controversy’ would PFT have to blow out of proportion today?

  45. One guy is bangin’ Erin Andrews, and the other is begging his backup QB for a date with his daughter.

That pretty much sums it up.

  46. Please, asking AR if he wants to pose in a magazine known for attractive guys is asking Louie Anderson if he would pose for Muscle Magazine.

MS is probably getting lots of great tail from this GQ spread.

    An Rodgers ‘stache isn’t embarrassing?

    ——————————–

Embarrassing is being photographed while dressing up like Danny Terrio’s little brother…

Embarrassing is having a HC posting ad looking for someone to go elbow deep in his wife…

Embarrassing is guaranteeing a win in the SB and watching AR not only winning the game but also winning the MVP…

There is a trend here – got it?

  49. Sanchez is skyrocketing up one list to be sure – the list of most wildly overrated, otherwise totally mediocre QB’s. Tony Romo thinks Sanchez should accomplish some things on the field before basking in his unearned limelight.

  50. zinn22 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:01 PM

  52. Sanchez is a good QB, didn’t his JETS beat NE last year in the playoffs, after getting deystroyed once. I don’t think ARodge could handle playing in the AFC, let alone AFC East. Miami shoulda taken him, then he’d be an average QB.
If Sanchez = Jim McMahon then I guess he’s due to get one SB ring and be involved in one of the all time greatest cheeseball rap songs in Pop Culture history

Would be big news if he did come out as first openly gay NFL QB…though Kordell Stewart was obvious too.

Am sure this excites all jet fans, esp the men…feet, fences & ramrods.

  55. Not saying Im all for the pic taking and mag.interviews, But if Rodgers was the Qb for either of the Ny Teams and not in the one street light town of G.B. ,he’d be doing the same type of S–t, it comes with the territory..Notice Eli Gump does all those commercials with his Brother..

Marino was a proven QB and was a great one at that. Sanchez and his career 54% comp. percent along with his career QB rating of 70 say otherwise.

  63. The Sanchez GQ spread was an embarassment, but so was the interview where Rodgers was patting himself on the back about his invisible wrestling championship belt smack talk move.

  64. Yeah GQ we get it, your pics are a theme based on Broadway Joe Namath doing similar back in the 1970’s.

If Karma exists, and this GQ thing gets the Jets a super bowl ring, hell you can take all the pics you like.

  65. Rodgers parades around after a Super Bowl win with a WRESTLING BELT, and he’s calling another QB embarrassing?

    That’s rich!

  66. Rodgers was calling it embarassing because he didn’t see the white pant outfit until after labor day, c’mon people put 2 and 2 together here.

  67. I will be going out and buying a Rodgers jersey immediately. Sanchez is overrated and clearly likes men.

  68. I guess when your team “owns” the city of New York run around look silly doing model shoots, talk REAL big and not back it up, and trip opposing teams punt returners.

Perhaps you should learn the origination of the entire deal. Also, he didn’t bring the wrestling belt. Matthews did.

  70. Well, at least Sanchez knows more about modeling (women’s) clothes than he does about getting his completion percentage up to a decent 60.

  71. The only magazine Aaron Rodgers will be posing for is the one that the NFL Hall of Fame will start circulating about their members.

  73. As a woman…I’m not sure why you guys are hating on Aaron’s looks. Sure, he looks goofy in some pics, but overall in the pics I’ve seen he’s actually fairly good looking (with short hair, light beard or no facial hair). And personally, I don’t find sanchez to be attractive at all.

  74. “Look at this,” Rodgers said. “That’s embarrassing. Page 94 of the GQ thing here. That’s terrible.”

maybe he knows white pants after labor day is a no no.

  75. Rodgers comes off as a petty person. He is probably not happy about the attention that Mark receives playing in NY.
He claims that he likes his privacy but went out of his way to make the remarks about Sanchez. Does that seem like someone who wants out of the spotlight becasue you essentially may be creating a s**t storm as the media is going to run with this.
The most important fact about this situation is that Mark Sanchez did the photo shoot for CHARITY not attention i.e. ARod, Ocho Cinco, TO…. Rodgers seems PETTY, VERY PETTY..

  76. You people do realize that Rodgers only sported that mustache for the preseason, right? He then shaves it off before the regular season starts. He has been doing that every year since he started.

  79. yo, Aaron. You’re just a pretty boy with a beard, which that Jets guy has worn before.

Why do guys act like DOUCHES about other guys dressing up? such immaturity and bigotry.

Because god forbid someone say the way someone else dressed is embarrassing without having their comfort in their sexuality questioned.

It could be that Aaron Rodgers thinks the whole metrosexual trend is embarrassing. There are probably a lot of people who would agree. Are you going to question their comfort in their sexuality too?

Do you question the comfort in the sexuality of the women and gay men who will knock how someone dresses at award shows? Or does that comment only apply to straight men who knock on the metro look? Rodgers gave an honest opinion that wasn’t even that bad compared to replies that here and other football sites/Football Messageboards probably spawned. Like most types of looks the metrosexual look isn’t for everyone and just because someone doesn’t like it doesn’t have any impact on their sexuality.

In this day and age we should be supporting young men like Mark Sanchez in their attempt to come “out”. If a guy like Mike Irvin is willing to accept a gay NFL player, then who are we to mock or ridicule. I say good luck Mark!

  97. I don’t think Aaron takes himself or fashion too seriously. Did any of you see him in the press conference after the Eagles playoff game?

He had a disheveled suit on with a pointy black stocking cap on. My guess is that someone made a bet that he wouldn’t go on TV wearing it.

When GB isn’t in the playoffs and Jets win the SB Sanchez will get the last laugh.

    =================================

What year are you talking about?

  99. I have to side with Rodgers on this one.

If Sanchez would focus a little more on football maybe he’d be sporting the “Championship Belt” like Rodgers instead of the limp-wristed apparel he is wearing in those photos.

  100. “Six years in the league and dude hast yet to win an NFC North division title. Last year was an absolute one off.”

Who cares? Everyone in the NFL would take a Super Bowl trophy over some pointless division title. Plus the Packers would later prove they were the best in the division by slaughtering the Bears.

  101. “MS is probably getting lots of great tail from this GQ spread.”

Some of it might even be female.

  102. talkintrashallday says:

Aaron Rogers = Gay Basher. think about it.

    ————————————————

I don’t think Aaron was gay-bashing, but I do think that’s why the photo makes people uncomfortable. As a straight woman, I’ve found Sanchez attractive, so seeing that photo I have a gut reaction of what? nooo. If Sanchez were an openly gay man, I wouldn’t have that reaction because the photo would be in line with my expectations. But he’s openly straight. So why did GQ depict him in such a stereotypical Fire Island way? Their editors knew that image of a straight NFL player would stir controversy. I doubt Sanchez had any idea what they were doing. They’re the ones exploiting his sexuality for attention. Think about it.

Sanchez doing this is A-OK in my book. Maybe Aaron needs to become more comfortable with his sexuality.”

    and
    “talkintrashallday says:
Aaron Rogers = Gay Basher. think about it.”

    ————————————————————————————————-
Posters like threedeep1998 and talkintrashallday need to learn reading comprehension. Where in the article or from Aaron’s quotes does he question Sanchez’s sexuality or even make any sort of gay bashing remark? You idiots are projecting YOUR insecurities or bigotry onto Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers seems PETTY, VERY PETTY..”

Or, maybe the sane people in the room realize that Sanchez and Rodgers are friends and Rodgers was just teasing him.

Oh and for the record, Rodgers was ASKED about it in an interview. He didn’t go “out of his way to make the remarks about Sanchez.”

The only magazine Aaron Rodgers will be posing for is the one that the NFL Hall of Fame

    duece 5 says:

Woah….SLOW DOWN on the HOF dude. He has to put in another 8-10 years to be spouting off about HOF.

Injuries, concussions, which Erin has had, let alone “other things” that can come into play.
One super bowl is no guarantee….he has only started 3 years, been in the league for 6, but hasn’t even won a division title yet….so slow down….the football gods don’t like the talk!!!

  106. In response to HoF talks… yes, he is well on his way.

Rodgers is #1 all-time in QB rating both regular season and post season.

    He is #1 all-time in INT%.

If he has 4 or 5 more 4k yard seasons, that one playoff run and one ring is all he needs for HoF status.

Rodgers parades around after a Super Bowl win with a WRESTLING BELT, and he’s calling another QB embarrassing?

    That’s rich!
    ———–
Perhaps you should learn the origination of the entire deal. Also, he didn’t bring the wrestling belt. Matthews did.

So Matthews lent him his strap on?
    ==================================

  108. why does aaron rodgers give off this vibe of being a very bitter person? all of his interviews involve how angry he was at favre, or not being drafted #1, or not being taken seriously by colleges recruiting him. this me against the world approach is very tiresome.

and Sanchez had all the money used for the clothes in this shoot donated to a 9/11 fund for kids. shut up, rodgers. get your facts straight before you start shooting your bitterness somebody elses way.

  109. Sanchez needs to worry less about his celebrity life and more about his football skills. Straight up the guy is not that good, mediocre at best, AT BEST.

Jets fans won’t admit it but they can’t be fully confident in this guys, you know its true. On the list of young quarterbacks

  110. It’s hilarious for Erin to be talking trash…..really girl? You caught lightning in a bottle, BARELY made the playoffs…..AND ERIN HASN’T WON A DIVISION TITLE YET!! Something even T-Jack has done!!

Rodgers forgets that Sanchez’ female companionship of choice ( barely legal teens) finds those pictures just “hunky”.
    _____________________________________

Barely legal teens are EVERY man’s “female companionship of choice.”

  112. I always forget how classy the Packers are supposed to be when Rodgers is always opening his mouth talking s*** about people. Reporters, cancer patients, and now other team’s QB. Who else gets away with calling another NFL QB “embarrassing” and then claims to not look for publicity. This screams of Rodgers being jealous that GQ or any other magazine outside of WI didn’t interview him.

  113. dondada10 says: Sep 7, 2011 11:39 AM
Whatever, Rodgers. The Jets are winning it all this year!

  114. Rodgers is beyond smug. He always talks in this passive agressive manner, and carries himself as such. He’ll get his someday I’m sure. Hopefully in the name of Suh.

  115. Brady appeared in GQ too, I don’t see rodgers taking any shots at him. That wuss is just going after the weaker one. If he’s gonna bull that BS with the belt wearing, he should probably grow a pair an be a little more consistent in his fellow athletes who he bashes.

  116. Sanchez is not actively seeking this publicity, but is going along for the rise. The Jets QB is not a glory hound, but a consummate team player. Those ridiculing Sanchez should do it in good nature, and recognize he’s a good guy.

It’s called playing with a chip on his shoulder. He’s been doubted since he was drafted. Then he got messed around by the whole Favre retiring, maybe not, maybe still is, maybe not again see saw. After he got the reigns, National media doubted he could live up to Favre’s legacy.

Now, he’s just making anyone who doubted him pay that price and rightfully so.

who fricken’ cares about division titles???? Idiot.

Vikings fans do. They can’t win the Lombardi, so the Division race is kinda like their Super Bowl.

  119. Sanchez sucks. The dude has a 50% completion percentage. His Dominatrix lover (Rex “foot soldier” Ryan) protects him by limiting his exposure as a pro QB. This is very obvious with the style of offense they play.
Aaron Rodgers is a BMF with some hardware to prove it.
