Cowboys secondary takes another hit

Chad Hall, Mike Jenkins AP

Dallas’ decision to keep Terence Newman for $8 million instead of going harder after Nnamdi Asomugha ranks as one of the most non-moves of the offseason.

Newman, who struggled all last year, is set to miss Week One.  The Cowboys could really be thin in the secondary following news that starting cornerback Mike Jenkins was also hurt at practice Wednesday.

Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com relays the news straight from owner Jerry Jones.  The team has only three healthy cornerbacks.

Somewhere, Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress are smiling.

UPDATE: A Cowboys offensive lineman was also hurt Wednesday.  Jones wouldn’t say who it was.

I will always hate the Cowboys, being that I am an Eagles fan. But even with this, you can’t help but feel sorry for them and all their issues.

  4. blackgolddomination says: Sep 7, 2011 2:13 PM

The Cowboys as a whole, were one of the most non-moves of last season (this sentence structure seems haywire)… why not go for two in a row? The Cowboys losing is like opening a nice gift on my birthday.

  5. andyreidisfat says: Sep 7, 2011 2:22 PM

So the Eagles sign nnamdi and you hate on them for that, but the cowboys not signing him is a big mistake? I think it may be time to find a new site or start one of my own . Anyone. But that annoying steelers fans want to join me?

  6. gdeli says: Sep 7, 2011 2:23 PM

I do not feel sorry for these fools. They have 3 superbowls from one guy..the former vikes gm mike lynn. what a freaking tool. I will laugh at the cowboys demise and hope the vikes have a good season. But with the vike’s secondary? It is on them and I will not drink their cool aid again until they win the superbowl. That saints fiasco was amazing!

Ahhh – the prescience of our expert General Manager…Terrence “Toast” Newman who is hurt more than burned…keep him, but DON’T try to get Asomuas;dkgapoeiugh (or however it’s spelled).

  16. ezdoesit209 says: Sep 7, 2011 2:50 PM

Enough already with the Nnamdi Asomugha ish…. he ain’t Jesus, damn!

  17. rootintootinnootin says: Sep 7, 2011 2:51 PM

Tyron Smith got hurt too… jeez.

Find out what happened to him. They took him in for an MRI for a knee problem.

  18. ilovefoolsball says: Sep 7, 2011 2:51 PM

The cowboys are the most overhyped team of the last two decades. Why do they get such attention? I mean Dallas isn’t that important of a city. Is it because the previous success that they had some 17 years ago?
They are irrelevant, and their fans are snobs.

  19. mrphatal says: Sep 7, 2011 2:52 PM

Love to see how ESPN every year picks the Cowboys as being the “cream of the crop.” Every year they fail. I cant wait for them to be at the bottom AGAIN. Rob Ryan, looks like the only person ass you will be whopping is a buffet this year.

  20. brettto73 says: Sep 7, 2011 2:53 PM

“…ranks as one of the most non-moves of the offseason” <– Not sure what this means. Biggest? Worst?

  21. freebird2011 says: Sep 7, 2011 2:59 PM

Jerry Jones, Nate Vasher is waiting for that phone call.

  22. gcsuk says: Sep 7, 2011 3:01 PM

Sorry, Cowboys, but you’re going to have to try a lot harder than that to get sympathy from Giants fans. Missing Week One?!? Oh Lord, HOW will they get by?!?!

  23. jjared1101 says: Sep 7, 2011 3:03 PM

    @ilovefoolsball & mrphatal

I don’t see anybody picking Dallas to win the Super Bowl this year. ESPN picks them every year? Cream of the Crop? I think the majority of “experts” have Philly winning the division with Dallas and NY fighting for second place.

You can whine about Dallas all you want, but believe me when i say, none of us “snobs” here in Dallas real care about you. You are both part of the problem as to why Dallas gets more coverage than most. Cause you love to talk about them, whether it’s positive or negative.

So do yourselves a favor and stop reading about Dallas and worrying about which blow hard picks them.

  24. bobhk says: Sep 7, 2011 3:06 PM

Who plays the cowboys in week1? The QB will have amazing fantasy stats in the game. Hahahah!

  25. jjared1101 says: Sep 7, 2011 3:07 PM

    Hey Rosenthal

Read your own site before you talk about how the Cowboys could have made a push for Nnamdi if they had cut Newman. It was widely believed that Newman would be cut if Nnamdi signed. Your own boss wrote an article about how Nnamdi wanted to come to Philly and was willing to take a pay cut. So i’m not sure how Dallas could gone “harder” at Nnamdi.

  26. kevpft says: Sep 7, 2011 3:11 PM

So, to recap, they have a questionable secondary hobbled with injury, a questionable offensive line hobbled with injury, and an unsettled merry-go-round at kicker.

Am I the only Cowboys fan getting tired of this same damn song every year for most of the last decade?

For Pete’s sake, these are the exact same problems that have plagued the team for years. They have star-caliber quality at most of the key skill positions, but they keep stumbing over the exact same ground again and again.

When those long passes deep into the secondary start raining down on Sunday, every Cowboys fan is going to see visions of Santana Moss in their heads and cringe for another broken record of a season.

Hope I’m wrong. I’ve been hoping I’m wrong for years now.

    Come on Kevpft

Don’t you remember the good ol days of Pete Hunter and Mario Edwards? ….what about Dwayne Goodrich? No? …

    Yea man…doesn’t look good.

We’ll just have to outscore teams with our O-line that has two rookies, one of which got hurt today.

  31. rmccullen90 says: Sep 7, 2011 3:33 PM

I have no idea why jerry jones would keep newman for 8 million. What has he done in the last few years that would warrant ANYONE wanting to keep him for for 8 million. While nnamdi was available…BUT THEN AGAIN IT’S THE COWBOYS

  32. starderup says: Sep 7, 2011 3:35 PM

LOL @ drshakedown74. Alice Cowboys. LOL
    Tony Romo… LOL
What a joke. The only funnier one is when someone calls them America’s Team.
They got some nice cheerleaders, but that’s it.

  33. beerbaron says: Sep 7, 2011 3:36 PM

Nnamdi and Newman have the same agent, Ben Dogra. He knew that if Nnamdi went to Dallas, Newman would surely be cut. So Dogra leveraged Dallas’s offer to get more from the Eagles, sticking the Cowboys with his other client.

  34. mrlynch33 says: Sep 7, 2011 3:44 PM

Wait, wait, wait….Why are Santonio Holmes and Plax smiling? You say that like they are in the NFC East and have the cornerbackless Cowboys in their division. You lost me on that one, sir.

  35. zinn22 says: Sep 7, 2011 4:02 PM

Does it matter if anyone is covering Jet receivers with Sanchez throwing? Sanchez is hands down the worst QB in football. There is no other QB close. If he was any other team than the Jets he would have been cut last year.

  36. rayguyreturns says: Sep 7, 2011 4:13 PM

So, how’s the fortune telling business?

I guess every GM has a crystal ball that tells them who will be hurt 5 weeks from now?

“We shoulda signed (fill in blank), ‘cuz Newman will be hurt for week one”. Yes, it’s nice to sit back and use our hindsight, isn’t it?

This guy here sounds like the guy who was the boyfriend of the 17 year old chick Sanchez smashed last year. Because that’s foolishness. Both those bums in Washington, the ones in Miami and each of the ones in Seattle and San Francisco are worse. Are you kidding me?

Sanchez may be bad, but T-Jack is absolutely terrible. Chilli-dog spent too much time dreaming of how he could actually become a competent QB. As a vikings fan, T-Jack did not lead us to the playoffs, AP did. And who lost the game for us against the Eagles? T-Jack. Sanchez at least is capable enough to make a slant throw and the occasional deep ball throw. All T-Jack does is stand there and eventually hits his RB for a 2 yard gain.

    Signed,

    NFC East Receivers

The Cowboys are irrelevant and their luster is fading like a dying, collapsing star. Even the NFL films, bandwagon-fan adopted nickname of “America’s Team” is an total embarrassment.

Translation = We really suck right now, but a bunch of years ago that almost nobody remembers or cares about, we were good.
