Daily News: The Jets own New York

It seems like no one (except myself) expects the Giants to win the NFC East.  They don’t even get much love in their own town.

The cover of the New York Daily News football preview declares the Big Apple to be “New Jet City.”

“They are brash, have lots of flash and are the toast of this once-Big Blue town,” Gary Myers of the New York Daily News writes. “That fact won’t sit well with the Giants or their fans, but as the 2011 season begins, anybody who doesn’t think the Jets own this city isn’t in touch with reality.”

Getting crowned the Kings of New York doesn’t mean anything, of course.  But as a fan of the tabloids here in New York City, it’s fun to see this rivalry picking up with a meeting on Christmas Eve this year.

The Giants have a lot of material when it comes to getting “disrespected” this year.

“We got momentum when you look at the two years we’ve had since I’ve been here. And that’s all I am going on,” Jets coach Rex Ryan told Myers. “We’ve gone to the playoffs the last two years, the Giants haven’t. That’s a good football team. There is no question they got a good football team. I want to have the best team in football, not just here in New York.”

Your move, Pat Hanlon.

  1. Great now baby Huey can sit down with paper and crayon and draw a parade route through the city. The NYDN can run it on the cover. Can hardly wait for the bitch slappin they will get on October 23 starting at 10am ET. Hey Ole Cromartie we are running straight at you daddy.

  2. I remember back in 2007 when the Daily News similarly declared that the Mets owned NYC. That didn’t last very long and this won’t either.

  3. “I want to have the best team in football, not just here in New York.”

You’ll be lucky to be the best team in your division. A 3rd afc championship appearance would be remarkable. Fail that and you can stick a fork in this team.

  4. Im a big jets fan and until we win a super bowl (in my lifetime anyway), this “jets own the city” propaganda has got to stop. Yes, we have gotten far in the playoffs and its a lot more fun than it used to be to be a Jets fan, but let’s not give ourselves a bad name by naming ourselves the king of the city, lets show it!

  5. However, they have 1 glaring question…

“Can Mark Sanchez win a Super Bowl?” The jury is out on that. They might have enough pieces in place to make another run, but at the end of the day, they are relying on Mark Sanchez to lead them there and that is up for some debate.

The Jets need to worry about winning their Division first.

  6. Nope. Still don’t care what the New York tabloids say.

Are we going to get a story about what The Times Picayune said about the Saints today?

  7. The Jets won’t make the playoffs this year. They squeaked in the past two years (in 2009 it was especially gifted to them with the Colts and Bengals purposely losing to the Jets to keep the Steelers out of the playoffs) as a Wild Card but it won’t happen again this year. And they sure as heck can’t win the division.

Rex Ryan predicts the Jets will win the Super Bowl and I predict they won’t make the playoffs.

I guess we’ll find out who’s who and what’s what by January.

  8. @snowpea84 It’s a city of 8 million people. Don’t you think that some are Giants fans and some are Jets fans? Most fans don’t flip flop depending on the day of the week.

  9. It’s much better to go into the season as underdogs – but I guess that’s tough to do when your idiot coach guarantees (for the second year in a row) that he’ll win the Super Bowl.

The bigger they are the harder they fall – and in Rex Ryan’s case he’s VERY big.

As of now I’d say it seems likely that Rex will feel the Agony of De-Feet.

And the Giants actually have a ring in the last ten years. Jets don’t.

  11. @citizenstrange

The Texans finished ahead of the Steelers and were the last AFC team to be eliminated from playoff contention in 2009

Yeah, they “sneaked” in with an 11-5 record in 2010. And their 2009 record of 9-7 was one game worse than last year’s Super Bowl Champion.

  13. My god guys, sooo much hate. I’m a die hard jet fan and respect the giants also. There are 20 teams in this league that would probably DIE to have Rex as their coach. Bottom line is this game is ENTERTAINMENT, and this dude delivers.

If no one is hating on you, its because you’re doing it wrong, and probably losing (See Bills.)

  14. Why do you have to choose a baseball team in NY but in football you can celebrate both? In all the other cities where baseball teams are not going to make the playoffs its choose 1 football team and wear whatever baseball hat you think looks the illest.

And can we PLEAAASE stop making excuses like this. 60% of this game is luck (Random injuries, field goal misses, etc.) If Eli had gotten sacked on the play to Tyree would the Giants have won the Superbowl?

I dont care how you slice it, we’ve been to the AFC championship 2 years in a row and that’s better than 28 other teams, TWICE.

  16. i think the giants will win the east as well. the giants are the most balanced team in the division, despite the injuries.

the jets do currently own NY….and that will change as soon as they slip up.

  17. “There are 20 teams in this league that would probably DIE to have Rex as their coach.”

Doubtful. You do realize that outside of New York, Rex Ryan is largely viewed as a loud-mouthed clown who has no hand in his own offense, right?

  18. And if you turn to page 3 of this rag you will see a full page ad for jets tickets available, good seats for every game. This with an entire upper bowl of seats not attached with a psl. The Giants? All seats outside of luxury boxes have been sold, with a psl. So I ask, who’s the more popular team???

  19. The Giants had a shot at the Div. till they started dropping players left and right to injury , unlike G.B.you dont have a rodgers to carry you asses when the injuries pile up, Eli’ s 30 td -30 int wont cut it..

Oh he is entertaining all right; people love buffoonery…

But does he deliver the SB win that he keeps promising?

I am a Cowgirls fan and having one bloated charlatan from that family is enough so count us out of the RR sweepstakes! I’d rather keep losing which we will anyway long as we have Jerruh as GM…

  21. The Jests are always the NFL’s best team in August & September. Then the actual season starts. It’s almost as if they believe that, if they keep saying it, it’ll somehow come true. It won’t, by December Rexy’s bunch will demonstrate how all the September talk doesn’t necessarily add up to results. Again.

  22. gary meyers wrote that article and he’s a moron. he had the giants winning 7 games last year. anyone who thinks the jets actually own nyc is a moron too. i like the flags coach coughin is holding in the cartoon. they represent each SB. by the time im 350 years old the jets could have 4 SB’s.

  23. I hate New York but…

There was once a football team from New York. The media wanted their head coach fired. Most fans thought their quarterback sucked. They never had good soundbytes. The one and only time they tried to create a media stir they couldn’t get to the dry cleaners in time to pull it off.

But they had a scary front 7, an unstoppable running back group, and they actually won a Super Bowl without a perpetual guarantee.

  24. As a Giants’ fan, I LOVE THIS!!!!! They are always at their best when its them against the world. When the big blue bandwagon is full, it always breaks down.

  25. As a Giants’ fan, I LOVE THIS!!!!! They are always at their best when its them against the world. When the big blue bandwagon is full, it always breaks down.

  26. Glad to see the Queens tabloid declared the jets owning NY since they have never owned the AFC East. It has been about 10 years since they won the division and have only done it 3 other times since 1972.

Anyone who knows anything about NY knows the jets are the equivilent to the mets in the hierchy of NY sports.

Until they win a SB, the jets will always be the red headed stepchildren of NY Football.

    Happy 42nd!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. I can’t be more happy not be a JETS fan….they continue to be an embarassment to the sport and the city. So what they have won a few games. The conduct of their coach is rubbing off on their players, who, in my opinion, will never measure up to the hype. I would take Eli over Sanchez every day of the week…..the Giants have won a superbowl, the Jets nothing. It’s maddening to read the posts of Jets fans….so pathetic and undereducated. I hope they fall flat on their collective (sic) faces.

  28. New York Jets = Buffalo Bills 2.0

Thats essentially what they are until they actually WIN an AFC Championship Game.

And the thumbs down will come from people who have a hard time identifying and accepting THE TRUTH.

  29. Haha I love when they do stuff like this. I can’t even remember the last time the Jets won their own division, but they somehow own New York. Their record the past two years is 20-12 and the Giants is 18-14. Oh yeah, and the Jets haven’t won (or sniffed) a Super Bowl since 1969, back in the AFL days. Idiot journalists and their lack of information.

  30. Jet-Giants every year on Christmas eve or Christmas would be GREAT to see.

This is coming from a (predominately) Cowboys fan. Dallas gets plenty of big games. NY-NY/NJ game would be absolutely awesome.

  31. I’ll validate dreck like this when the Jets actually win something. We outnumber them in this city AND out in Jersey and there isn’t even a CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY in their cupboard since 1969, yet they believe this.

Myers is a hack, though. I read his “column” periodically in the News just for laughs’ sake.

The only thing they “own” here is trash-talking, and they can have that. We don’t play for headlines and talk is cheap to the Giants. We’d prefer to be outside of the media spotlight anyway.

  32. Who cares?

    New York fans are clowns.

When I was a freshman in college, I had to endure ridicule from New York Jets’ “fans” as I silently wept following the Patriots’ first loss of the 2007 season.

Three years later, those same “fans” were yapping it up on idle Tuesday mornings about Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez and the bravado B-S. I have yet to hear a thing about the Giants since 2007.

These “fans” aren’t good for the game.

People in New York need to make a decision on who they follow and wear it on their sleeve, or go follow European club soccer. It’s time to make a stand.

Only one team in New York and it’s the Bills. Case closed. Try again. Giants and Not Yets are from Jersey.

    ———————–
Buffalo might as well be in Canada. Now go jump off the falls with the rest of the Bills because that’s all their good at is committing suicide year after year.

@ampats, take your three cheaterbowl rings and come back when you can beat the Jets in the Playoffs. Pats are owned by the Jets

  34. I would think that to “own” a city there would have to be some type consistency, and not just over a 2 year span.

Consistency in regards to selling tickets, winning seasons, FO management, accountability, SETTING REALISTIC GOALS, being humble, allowing the teams on field performance speak for them, ACTING like a championship team.

But apparently if your load, obnoxious, and arrogant enough you can be crowned anything you want. And it’s hard to just blame the Jets and the Eagles, the media certainly plays their part.
