Eagles bench first round pick Danny Watkins

Danny Watkins, Howard Mudd AP

Two days after admitting his transition to the NFL was “overwhelming,” Eagles rookie Danny Watkins was removed from the starting lineup.

Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com reports from Eagles practice Wednesday that new waiver pickup Kyle DeVan will replace Watkins in the starting lineup. DeVan took all the reps with the starting lineup.

This is the right move by all accounts. Watkins doesn’t look ready.

Still, the Eagles have to be disappointed with the uncertainty of their offensive line.  Their right guard is a waiver pickup that wasn’t good enough to stick with the Colts.   The right tackle was moved from guard because their first two options were hurt. The center is a rookie.  The first round pick is on the bench.

There are plenty of reasons to think the Eagles will be good this year, but there are almost as many questions about them.

    No, he certainly doesn’t.

Has Rosenthal ever had a complete post that didn’t contain at least one error?

  12. phillycheez says: Sep 7, 2011 12:57 PM

They have a pretty weak schedule for the first couple weeks of the season. Hopefully by midseason they will have some stability and Mudd will have worked his magic, turning the line into a strength. Just don’t get #7 killed before then…

  13. raylewis52 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:57 PM

The Miami Heat had holes too… Better hope their stars play 4 quarters and not 3.

  14. japdouds says: Sep 7, 2011 12:57 PM

And that is why you don’t draft 26 year old RG’s in the 1st round of the draft. If a RG busts, there is nowhere else you can put them. If a 26 year old isn’t ready to start as a rookie, what do you do, wait until he is 28 and on the back end of his career before starting him???

  15. iseek11 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:58 PM

Doesn’t sound very “dreamy” to me.

  16. sasquash69 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:59 PM

Well they drafted a slow tackle to be guard. I’m not surprised. At least Mudd has them playing actual guards at the guard position. The Eagles have always been dumb in that aspect. Always taking tackles to place all line positions. I have the Eagles going 10-6 at best and I’m a birds fan.

  17. duncanthecat says: Sep 7, 2011 12:59 PM

  18. richie215 says: Sep 7, 2011 1:00 PM

Another waste of 1st round pick by Andy Reid! The guy is 27 y/o; therefore, his ceiling is limited! Why waste a valuable first round pick on a 27 y/o rookie!? SMMFH!!!

  22. goodmengoodwill says: Sep 7, 2011 1:03 PM

Give him 4 weeks. He’ll be a quality starter.

  23. tcawa757 says: Sep 7, 2011 1:04 PM

Don’t forget…..nobody can possibly design a defense to stop them……just ask Vick. They sure sound scary…Dream Team…QB dreaming of having a O line that won’t get him killed!

  24. hendawg21 says: Sep 7, 2011 1:05 PM

Well the Eagles have offensive line woes…
The Giants well they have injury woes…
The Cowboys have CB etc., woes

then there’s everyone piling on the Skins because they have a starting QB who took one team to the Super Bowl and they are picked to be last go figure…

  25. malblack says: Sep 7, 2011 1:05 PM

Concerning, yes. But it’s the right move. Have to protect Vick, and if the replacement is better than the rookie right now, you have to play the replacement.

  26. dirtybird70 says: Sep 7, 2011 1:05 PM

All those “dream team” additions and they’ll end up having the worst OL in football. Much like Vicks dogs, he’ll find it hard to escape.

  28. drobstad says: Sep 7, 2011 1:08 PM

Finally an article that doesn’t all ready hand the Eagles the NFC east. They have holes just like every other team. A bottom of the division O-Line and a brittle QB is a recipe for disaster.

  29. jimmysee says: Sep 7, 2011 1:08 PM

Wait — it can’t be. Isn’t this the “Dream Team?”

  30. caseysarasota says: Sep 7, 2011 1:09 PM

smart move – Watkins was strugglin…he will be a starter by years end…give him a few more weeks of practice under the scheme. Remember they didn’t have a Rookie Camp, so this is all rushed crash course for them. Devan was a starter for the Colts, he did good there, he will do good here, he knows Mudd’s scheme. Its like Jamal Jackson..he is a good starter, but Kelce proved to be better, it doesn’t mean he is bad. So someone else was as starter in Indy, doesn’t mean Devan is bad. Get to learning Watkins! Job is yours when you get that 27 year old head in the books.

  31. nineroutsider says: Sep 7, 2011 1:09 PM

Thanks to all of the posters who point out grammatical errors as if the rest of us don’t notice them; we recognize your limited intelligence and lack of wit.

  35. ahostiletakeover says: Sep 7, 2011 1:11 PM

Not anywhere close to liking the Eagles or Colts but DeVan is a decent pickup, he was alright in the Colts games I watched last year anyway.

I was surprised when the Eagles picked Watkins in the first anyway, thought they were definitely gonna pick Jimmy Smith but they let him fall to my Ravens, thanks Andy Reid!

  36. birdobeamen says: Sep 7, 2011 1:11 PM

  40. grandpoopah says: Sep 7, 2011 1:18 PM

For every weapon the Eagles have acquired, they have an equally large hole. How do you draft a 26 year old RG in the 1st round and expect him to start, hire a Defensive Coordinator with zero defensive coaching experience, and enter the season with one of the worst LB corps in recent NFL history in a year when you are aiming to win the Super Bowl? As a Birds fan, I hate to say it, but I am worried that this team is going to be like Dallas was last year – high expectations and a lot of star power, but fatally flawed at key areas.

  46. robertjamis says: Sep 7, 2011 1:30 PM

In most cases, you can’t call a guy a total bust the year he’s drafted. But in in most cases, the draftee isn’t already 27 years old.

I would note that the reason you don’t typically draft guards or safeties in round 1 is that if they flop, all they are is a backup guard or safety. The first round should really be reserved for premium positions.

If you are going to give Grossman credit for taking the Bears to the SB, then be ready to give credit to Eli Manning for WINNING the SB.

The line on Manning is “He didn’t win it…the defense did”. The exact same thing with Grossman/Chicago then (Although Grossman had more to do with the outcome of SB 41, what with that rainbow of a Pick 6 he threw).

Grossman was the model of inconsistency in 2006. For the season, 23 TDs, 20 picks, and 8 fumbles. Sounds a LOT like Manning last year. But Manning sucks, and Grossman is “the QB that took a team to the SB”.

You can’t have it both ways, skins fans.

despite the glaring holes, i still think the eagles will probably win the east. two weeks ago i believed that the giants had a legit shot….but now, with all the season ending injuries, the giants probably wont have enough horses to have a good year. the cowboys may give the eagles a little trouble too but the eagles should be able to withstand it.

as for the skins fans out there….please stop guys. you cant expect a team which has been as consistently lousy as yours has been to suddenly be taken seriously. they arent winning the east and arent making the playoffs. if they play decently this year, then MAYBE theyll start getting some respect in 2012.

The Cowboys just lost their rookie starting Right Tackle for 2 weeks as well as corner backs Jenkins and Newman for week one! The Giants, to go along with their numerous injuries, just loss their starting MLB Goff for the season as well! What a great couple of days..although I dont wish any malicious acts of violence on other teams I will say that our NFC east foes have kicked us while we were down before so now its our turn to take advantage…and possibly mock some cowgirl fans on the way to a play off berth!
