Joselio Hanson returns to Eagles

Earl Bennett, Joselio Hanson, Nate Allen AP

We w0ndered aloud last night why cornerback Joselio Hanson was still a free agent.

It only took 12 hours longer to happen and Hanson landed in a surprising place: Right were he started. Geoff Mosher of the News Journal of Wilmington and Adam Caplan of Sirius NFL Radio report that Hanson has returned to the Eagles on a two-year deal.

Caplan says the Eagles beat out 3-4 teams to get him.  The two year-contract could be a sign the Eagles know Asante Samuel won’t be with them in 2012, so they are planning ahead.

It’s a surprising move, but gives the Eagles enviable flexibility and depth in the secondary.

UPDATE: The Eagles cut Trevard Lindley to make room.

The only flexability Hanson provides is YAC for opposing receivers…and I’m an Eagles fan.

It’s funny because Mike Garafolo reports the Giants tried to work out a deal with Joselio. He turned them down.

That is funny. Literally I lold.

    I’m still loling.

    And the loling continues.

More lols in your general direction Giants fans.

    Lol.

ugh, I rather have a rookie be the 4th CB then Hanson.

  4. ianwhetstone says: Sep 7, 2011 11:32 AM

More than likely, the Eagles brass simply noticed a free agent sitting out there on the market, and yelled “sign him!”

  5. cav2ya says: Sep 7, 2011 11:36 AM

    huh?

Joselio Hansen – “Damn, the Eagles?”

Trevard Lindley – “Damn Joselio Hanses!!”

  7. icelovinbrotha215 says: Sep 7, 2011 11:44 AM

Maybe this explains why Nnamdii didn’t take his old number back. Oh well. Can’t wait for 1 p.m. on Sunday. Fly Eagles Fly.

  8. Awol.West says: Sep 7, 2011 11:47 AM

This shows that my Eagles are admitting a mistake with drafting Lindley in the 4th round of last year’s draft. And that they never wanted to let Hanson go, just pay him less to be a nickel/dime back.

  9. jacksaysfu says: Sep 7, 2011 11:47 AM

Its a beautiful time to be a Philly fan. The flyers finally got a great goalie , the Phillies are killing baseball right now , 76ers are locked out so i can make believe they are amazing , and while the Eagles have not won anything yet the FO is bringing in great players and this is EASILY the most talented Eagles team i have ever seen.I go to lehigh every year and this team would destroy our 04′ squad !!!

  10. ninjapleazee says: Sep 7, 2011 11:51 AM

Wonder if he’ll have to buy his number 21 back from Ronnie Brown

  11. CJ says: Sep 7, 2011 11:52 AM

makes no sense to me…I’d rather have Lindley.

  12. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Sep 7, 2011 11:54 AM

my guess is the salary has been lowered, with the two year deal, the eagles now control a trade if needed next august. andy got anxious with all the new faces and decided a little stability might not be the worst thing.

  13. youboettcha says: Sep 7, 2011 11:54 AM

Ronnie Brown should give back jersey #21.

  14. youboettcha says: Sep 7, 2011 11:57 AM

The Eagles probably realized the Giants would put him to good use with the injuries and all.

  15. jacksaysfu says: Sep 7, 2011 12:04 PM

If im the Eagles im finding a way to keep all 4 guys on the field . Samuel stays outside , Hanson stays inside , Asomugha mostly plays outside in press coverage when we play against great WR’s but occasionally covers TE’s . Then utilize drc’s speed and use him as a safet3 where he can blitz and pick up Samuels guy when #22 reacts early . Nnamdi didn’t give up any td’s last year and his long arms and physical style may finally solve our getting burned by TE’s

  16. laeaglefan says: Sep 7, 2011 12:08 PM

Its probably a smart move on the Eagles, part….not because Asante won’t be there in 2012, but because one of (Asante, Nnmadi, & DRC) will probably be injured at any given time during the season, so having Hanson as a backup is a lot more appealing to them than Lindley or an untested rookie (Hughes or Marsh).

  17. snowpea84 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:10 PM

Too bad he’s too small and slow to cover or tackle. He does seem to know where the ball is going. he just can’t get there in time or do anything when the play is near him.

  18. dgreenfi says: Sep 7, 2011 12:11 PM

Joselio is my least favorite Eagle but I think I may be unfairly down on him because of 1 bad game vs Plaxico many years ago.

It is tough for a 5’1 CB to cover a 6’6 WR, but he is useful against teams with tiny tiny WR’s like Washington.

  19. smuthe says: Sep 7, 2011 12:12 PM

I don’t really get this move. Now it’s less money for Desean and poor Hanson just lost his number yesterday.

  20. janvanflac says: Sep 7, 2011 12:16 PM

I don’t understand why Eagles fans hate on him. He’s an excellent slot corner and great on special teams. Lindley was ok but Brandon Hughes played better. Good problem to have….and again, players prefer to play for the Eagles over other teams.

But maybe the Giants will pick up Lindley now.

  21. duraco20 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:18 PM

Nice move! One of the best nickel corners in the league. Welcome back Joselio!

  22. damnsureis says: Sep 7, 2011 12:31 PM

This is definitely an upgrade over who they have now.

  23. dcbassguy says: Sep 7, 2011 12:33 PM

Hanson was brought back for less money than his old contract. He’s also one of the best slot CB’s in the nfl, possibly the best.

This move is more about Asante being out next year.

It’s awesome that he told the Giants to F off?!

  24. drmonkeyarmy says: Sep 7, 2011 12:45 PM

I don’t understand the Hanson hate on here, I really don’t. He is not a CB who you want on the outside, but he is one of, if not the best slot CB in the league. The numbers bare that out as well. I believe he boasted something like a 40% completion rate while in the slot…..like 80% on the outside but that won’t be asked of him.

  25. seabreezes51 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:52 PM

This is a decent, not great move.
    We still need a linebacker……..

  26. sasquash69 says: Sep 7, 2011 12:55 PM

Its a great move. No one knows if DRC can even play inside slot cb. Its not the same as playing outside. On the outside you have the sideline to help you with your coverage. On the inside you don’t have that. Hanson has proven to be solid in the slot/middle cb position. DRC to my knowledge has always been on the outside. He needs to learn how to play inside. I don’t know if he can. I personally feel DRC is very overrated.

  27. laeaglefan says: Sep 7, 2011 1:02 PM

Don’t hold one bad game against Plaxico against him. Sheldon Brown had bad games against Plaxico all the time, and somehow got a “pass” on it.

  28. jacksaysfu says: Sep 7, 2011 1:08 PM

tBest secondary in the league , bar none . Im so curious to see how they use Asomugha . He was a safety in college , would be our solution for covering TE’s and is so good he can even play like a deep LB position . But he is sooo good at shutting down opponents best WR’s im not sure we should mess with success . Hanson is a great nickel back and Samuel is the best LCB playmaker in the NFL and Rodgers-Cromartie’s speed should be utilized with blitzes and when Nnamdi lines up against TE’s , DRC can be our RCB. Their base D will probably consist of Matthews,Chaney and Fokou at LB , Page & Coleman at Safety , Cole&Babin at DE , Jenkins and Dixon at DT , Asomugha & Samuel at
CB. But they should go Dime alot with
Cole,Babin,Jenkins,Patterson on the Dline , Chaney @ LB and Asomugha,Samuel,DRC,Hanson,Coleman and Allen(if healthy) . Now THAT IS A ELITE DEFENSE ! GO EAGLES !!!

Dixon at DT ,Samuel,Asomugha and DRC at CB ,

    Dixon at DT

Resign D-Jackson already. What a scam.

  30. dolphins4 says: Sep 7, 2011 1:49 PM

Now if they would just sign a great middle linebacker it would be great.

  31. pigskinswag says: Sep 7, 2011 2:00 PM

    Dear Sports Media,

Joselio Hanson really wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy, Just like Nnamdi Asomugha did.

    Signed,

    “JJ”

wow,, not even concerned that hoselio is back.. looking more into the fact that the eagles Released last years 4th round pick..

    go birds

  35. sdw2001 says: Sep 7, 2011 2:30 PM

Should have bailed on Hanson. Lindley was better.

  36. seabreezes51 says: Sep 7, 2011 2:39 PM

4th round picks are not automatics.
All of these last minute moves are happening because of the limited camp and preseason.

uhhh NO F’N WAY. Eagles all the way.

I NEVER SAID the Eagles are gonna lose the game, im just stating how retarded some “fans” can be thinking they know how to coach and scheme better than the actual coaching staff.
