Mike Scifres, Chargers agree on five-year extension

The Chargers overhauled much of their special teams unit after last season, but they have no problem with punter Mike Scifres.

Aaron Wilson of Scout.com is reporting that Scifres reached an agreement with the team on a five-year contract extension. The deal is reportedly worth $19 million with $8 million in guaranteed money for Scifres, who is entering his ninth season with the Chargers.

Scifres, a fifth-round pick in 2003, posted the highest gross average of his career in 2010, but the weakness of the Chargers’ overall special teams units worked against him. He had four kicks blocked and saw opponents average nearly 19 yards per punt return. The Chargers hired Rich Bisaccia to take over the special teams this season, something that Scifres probably appreciates after the subpar play of 2010.

it’s hard to believe that punters are making 4 million dollars a year these days. that has to be the easiest gig on the planet.

the problem with the ST was never scifi

no punter is going to get a punt off when his ST line fails to block people from a jailbreak

Much like hearing Janikowski would be a Pro-Bowler if it wasn’t for Nate Kaeding, Scifres takes second banana to Shane Lechler.

I hate this guy – he almost single-handedly beat the Colts in the 2008 play-off game by repeatedly pinning them inside the 5. A freakin PUNTER
