When Charlie Weis left the Chiefs, it was believed that head coach Todd Haley would take on a bigger role with the offense again.

Instead of hiring someone outside their system, the Chiefs promoted line coach Bill Muir, who had never called plays before. He’s going to call plays now, though.

“It’s a group contribution of what we like, where we like it, and kind of place that along the call sheet. But ultimately it will fall to Bill to make those decisions,” Haley announced Wednesday.

Muir, 68, has been in the NFL 33 years. He hasn’t called plays before, but Haley thought he made the most sense.

“You script the plays you want versus the defenses you want, as you get to the regular season,” Haley said. “The guy who’s doing the majority of that during the week, which is him, has ultimately the best feel for what he thinks he’s going to see defensively.”

The Chiefs’ offense seemed to collapse late last year when Haley reportedly began to take playcalling duties from Weis. We don’t think the identity of the playcaller is a huge deal, but wonder if Matt Cassel will regress without Weis helping him.
