Saints say they aren’t interested in Randy Moss

File picture of wide receiver Randy Moss, who is retiring, according to his agent on Monday Reuters

Earlier today, the folks at WWL-TV in New Orleans reported that receiver Randy Moss is a “player of interest” for the Saints.  WWL also reported, citing several unnamed sources, that Moss visited the Saints’ facility on Saturday.

Tonight, Saints spokesman Greg Bensel told PFT by phone that the WWL report isn’t accurate, on either count.  Per Bensel, the Saints aren’t interested in Moss, and Moss didn’t visit the team’s facility today.

It was fairly simple for PFT to get the team’s response.  I know Bensel, I sent Bensel an email, he called me, and we talked.  Total time investment?  Two minutes, 54 seconds.

So why in the heck didn’t WWL-TV do the same thing before publishing the report?  Indeed, there’s not even an indication in the story that WWL-TV even tried to contact Bensel or anyone else with the Saints.

For a television station in the city in which the Saints play, the failure to mention the team’s position on such a story — or to possibly even try to get it — is the kind of thing that can do irreparable damage to the station’s relationship with the organization.

UPDATE (9:54 p.m. ET):  Saint’s G.M. Mickey Loomis separately told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Saints aren’t interested in Moss.  “There is absolutely no truth to it,” Loomis said.  “It’s a made-up story, irresponsible reporting.  There’s zero to it.”

It was fabricated for the sole reason that I have never heard of waal or whatever the lame ass tv station is and all they want I’d their name on the radar.

Although not mentioned in this post — why do people continue to say that Randy Moss is done? Or more importantly believe it. Whether we like it or not, Randy Moss has always been a player that indulges when placed in a good situation and comes up short in a not-so-ideal situation.

It has never been a question of his talent, merely his mind. The minute he started to dislike NE he dropped off. Typical Randy Moss.

But when this guy is happy, he is amazing to watch. All I’ll say is: if this guy lands with a team boasting an “ideal” situation….

    Watch out.

None of you might like it but it’s the truth and admittedly, one that is hard to swallow considering his amazing talent but crap for brains.

This is WWL in a nutshell. Horrible sports coverage all the way around. Luckily there are a few other sources of new orleans sports coverage popping up now.

If anyone ever gets a chance to listen to WWL sports talk on new orleans 870 am, you will laugh your ass off

Of they are not interested – week one isn’t over yet, therefore his contract won’t be guaranteed

    We miss you Randy.

Noteworthy: WWL-TV is a broadcasting competitor of Fox 8 (WVUE) in New Orleans. The company that holds the license for Fox 8 and the Saints have something in common: Tom Benson owns them both.

  13. mydailyff.com says: Sep 10, 2011 11:41 PM

I have to disagree that Moss still has it, but if he gets in the right situation he could thrive, merely because he’s a big body and knows how to catch the ball. His elite speed seems to be gone, though. That said, I have grabbed him in a couple leagues just on the off chance that New England does pick him up again. If that happens, someone will give me a decent player for him in an IMMEDIATE trade… :)

  14. BlackAndGoldAllDay says: Sep 10, 2011 11:42 PM

That’s good, because they don’t need a guy like Moss on the team.

  15. saintsfan1111 says: Sep 10, 2011 11:52 PM

Saints fan here. It should be noted that Sean Payton is about as honest as Belicheat now. He thrives in misinformation, and I would not be shocked at all if he had Moss there today.

Not that I’m trying to defend WWL or anything (since their newscast is so mundane and unoriginal that a hyperactive 5 year old would fall asleep after watching 3.56 seconds of it), but WWL is one of the top rated CBS affiliates in the country and up until this past July they had been the top rated station in the whole state of Louisiana (WDSU-NBC recently passed them up in the ratings). So I doubt this story was fabricated to “put them on the map”. But then again I only get my news from WDSU-NBC and WVUE-FOX in New Orleans (which happen to be the home of the Saints in Primetime and daytime, respectively).

    PS: Go Saints!!!

Yea let me tall ya WWL wants someone that doesn’t even live in Louisiana to watch their news cast and pay attention to their sport news.. Man some people are dumb

    @bdert,
get out of your mom’s basement and experience the world. There are annoying fans in every fan base. I see you don’t reveal your team. Probably because you’re an annoying fan.

They saw a guy who was black and tall and thought he was Moss then they ran with it.

  23. wiscnsnpatfan says: Sep 11, 2011 2:53 AM

I have a feeling that some team, at some point during the season is going to have a receiver go down, and then Randy’s phone will ring. Given his attitude, he’d be a good pick up as long as he gets enough targets and feels he’s getting his requisite amount of “respect “. Low risk option as long as said team isn’t pinning their present and future success solely on him.

  24. ampking101 says: Sep 11, 2011 3:26 AM

Thank god. I’m one of the many people that is sad to see him retire and think he was an amazing talent (when he wasn’t being a diva) when I read there might be the slightest chance he could sign with the Saints….as a Falcons fan…almost broke my heart.

  25. bfx9 says: Sep 11, 2011 4:07 AM

this is a great opportunity for cincinnnati.
they can afford him for one year, they need some proven depth at the wr spot. he’s a proven name to help open up the awesome trio of shipley, green and grisham.

terrel owens missed 1/3 of the season and was having the best year of any wr up to that point.
ross could be a similar catalyst.

  26. fordman84 says: Sep 11, 2011 7:17 AM

So, I take this as either A) The saints made an offer and Moss turned it down, or B) they intend to sign him in the next week.

“So, I take this as either A) The saints made an offer and Moss turned it down, or B) they intend to sign him in the next week.”

Third option: entire story is baloney.

    Seriously???

    I mean, REALLY ?????

Did you not witness his steller 3 week return last year? Just how stupid ARE you Vikings fans?

No, folks, Randy is going to sit by his phone waiting for the call that is likely never going to come, from Foxboro MA. The only team he really wants to play for anymore.

Doesn’t need “straight cash”, has plenty of that; dude needs something money can’t buy …..love, and a ring.

It’s hard to believe the faith in hurricane forecasting the Yats had in Nash – and it was well deserved.
