Cowboys extend Witten through 2017

They say things happen in threes.  I say that “they” say that when things happen coincidentally in threes, and that “they” ignore the other situation when things happen in ones, twos, fours, or sevens.

Anyway, there’s now a third long-term veteran deal signed on the doorstep of the first Sunday of the 2011 regular season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has been signed to a five-year, $37 million contract extension, with $19 million guaranteed.

Witten had two years remaining on his existing deal.  He was due to earn base salaries of $3.39 million in 2011, ad $3.64 million in 2012.

He joins Steelers safety Troy Polamalu and Vikings running back Adrian Peterson as players who have cashed in significantly one day or less before their first game of the year.

  1. Good job Jerry! When you replace Tony Simpson(oops.. I mean Romo) you might be able to get your money worth out of Witten!

  2. Even as a Giants fan, I have a lot of respect for Witten. Play hard, plays clean, and isn’t a whiner. Wish there were more guys like him in the NFL.

  3. Regardless of who you root for…you gotta love this new rookie wage scale/cba…were gonna see a return of more and more players start and end their careers with one team…love it and congrats to a great football player that 31 other teams would die for (non-cowboys fan)

    Right, because he is clearly underperforming with at least 81 catches in each of the last four seasons.

  5. Nice signing for the Cowboys and Witten is one of the best but how does this deal make the Cowboys better? More mediocrity ahead for Jerry and the ‘boys.

    Jason Witten – OVER RATED
    Dallas Cowgirls suck

    ———————————-

    JW may be many things but overrated is not one of them…

    Lifelong Cowgirls fan and you have a valid point based on last year’s performance but it is a bit early to say for this year! ha ha ha

    The object of this game is to get younger with talent

    Yep. Not win super bowls or division championships.. First team to employ nothing but freakishly athletic infants “wins”, right? That’s NFL football baby!

    You may think Jerry Jones is a crappy G.M but hey, at least the man pays his players.

    ——————————-

    I don’t think that Jerruh is a crappy GM – I KNOW THAT HE IS A TERRIBLE GM!

    And so does every Cowboys fan with a brain…

    Think Joey Galloway or Roy Worthless; not to mention running Jimmy out of town…

  9. The object of this game is to get younger with talent

    ====================

    No, the object of the game is to win Super Bowls. Witten is 29 by the way. Only 29, and he’s already got 617 catches.

  10. Wawa 33. You did see Dallas cut three starting offensive lineman, Marion barber and Roy Williams this year right? Not to mention restructuring D-Wares and Romos contracts.

  11. @ phinfan

    You are aware that despite having been in the league for 8 years (with seven Pro Bowls), that Witten won’t turn 30 until May of next year, right?

  12. How is plastic face jerry Jones not over the cap?

    ==============

    it’s magic. The Cowboys were $18 million under the cap before Witten’s deal and they’re probably further under it now. All you people that think they will have cap problems next year need to remember that unused cap space can be carried over to the next season.

  13. Think Joey Galloway or Roy Worthless; not to mention running Jimmy out of town…

    =======================

    Jimmy ran himself out of town. Besides, did you see how Jimmy performed after he left Dallas?

  14. Nice signing for the Cowboys and Witten is one of the best but how does this deal make the Cowboys better? More mediocrity ahead for Jerry and the ‘boys.

    =======================

    That’s rich, a fan of a team that consists mostly of Cowboys castoffs saying how mediocre the Cowboys are. one winning season out of the last five tells that story. Shoulda kept Wannstedt.

  15. Good for witten great player. But leave it to ego maniac Jerry jones to announce it on 9-11. What a delta bravo

  16. The consummate football player…
    Have no problems with his new contact, works hard at his position and fully accomplishes his role on the team! A great asset to any team!

    Talking trash all day is perfectly fine, if you can back up what you say.

    Suggesting that JW is overrrated? Just demonstrates your lack of knowledge about the Cowboys and about football.

    Take the advice of Mark Twain (you’ll probably have to Wikipedia him)……

    “It’s better to be THOUGHT OF as a fool, than to OPEN YOUR MOUTH and remove all doubt.”

    Great signing, classy guy, great player……best TE in football.

    You should change your name to “talkingstupidallday”

  20. “Best tight end in the NFL, end of story.” Not if Finley stays healthy this year.

    ============

    If he stays healthy? That’s a pretty big “if” considering he’s never been able to do that in four seasons. You might as well expect Vick to stay healthy. Iron Man Witten’s 2010 numbers (94 catches, 1,002 yards, 9 TDs) surpass Fragile Finley’s four year career numbers (85, 1,104, 7) so let’s let the young man have at least one good season before we start comparing him to the best TE in the game.

  21. Either way I dislike Jerry and his awful football team. Before you drop 5 championships I will say 1 playoff win in the last 15 years. Cowboys are overrated and will do nothing again

    At least they’ve done something before, what you got, eagle fan? a lot of tears and humiliation. Even though they’ve only won 1 playoff game in the last 15 years they still have 14 more playoff wins than the Eagles and the Eagles have been around decades longer than the Cowboys.
