Ravens rip Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers v Baltimore Ravens Getty Images

The Ravens and Steelers typically play close, hard-fought, grind-it-out games.

Not today.

The Ravens beat the Steelers by 28 points, via a 35-7 outcome that does much more than hold serve in the home-and-home series.  Instead, it puts the Steelers and ther rest of the AFC North on notice that the Ravens don’t plan to play road games in the playoffs this year.

Joe Flacco completed 17 of 29 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns.  Ray Rice rushed for 107 yards, and he scored two touchdowns.

The Ravens’ defense forced seven turnovers — three interceptions and four fumbles.  Two of the fumbles came from Ben Roethsliberger, giving him a Delhommian five turnovers.

Though there’s still a long way to go, the Ravens surely hope this game sets the tone for 2011.  If it does, a 28-point win over the defending conference champion could make it hard for the next conference champion to be any team other than the Ravens.

Plain and simple, the Steelers got the crap kicked out of them today.

Somebody should call the cops on the Ravens cuz we just killed the Steelers! This is gonna be a good season. I’m buying my Super Bowl tickets now.

  3. darthvader89 says: Sep 11, 2011 4:22 PM

This is just one game, but to hell with Pittsburgh and all their fans who shrieked about their vaunted superiority and yelled down those who mentioned the Ravens giving the game away in the most unfortunate manner possible. If any team ever truly proved itself better in the last 3 years of this rivalry it was the Ravens today.

  4. niblickmaster says: Sep 11, 2011 4:22 PM

The Steelers are suffering the Super Bowl hangover that some thought Green Bay would. They looked out of sync.

Game should have been an even bigger blowout. Ravens lost a 4&1 in the redzone and an Anquan Boldin TD was called back due to a questionable Offensive PI call.

Steelers looked really, really old today.

    Did Polamalu even suit up?

  13. CKL says: Sep 11, 2011 4:28 PM

Have to get that snark in @ JD don’t you MF?
At least he’s actually played well in a SB unlike BR with his three total td passes in three SBs.
Why not say Favrian since he had six INTs in a playoff game? That’s the “gold” standard. From now on I will call any QB w/ 5 turnovers in a game Roethian.
You must be related to Prisco. In my book, being nasty and snarky is not a way to gain respect for one’s writing or intellect.

  14. peytonwantsaflag says: Sep 11, 2011 4:28 PM

  16. ricebowl2 says: Sep 11, 2011 4:31 PM

Listen, its early. There are still 15 more games to be played. But the Ravens dominated this game and you have to give credit where credit is due.

Had they lost this game all anyone would say is how the Steelers own the Ravens and Flacco can’t beat Roethlisberger. Ravens came out and dominated, can’t hold that against them and can’t defend the Steelers by saying its only one game. Last I checked, they only played 16 games which makes every single game important.

However, its how you finish not how you start.

  17. ny82jy says: Sep 11, 2011 4:31 PM

Ill admit it i liked Pitt in this one but they got destroyed. Congrats to the Ravens and their fans. They definatly deserved it and earned it. Next time up in Pitt though i know will be different because the Steelers are home and are gonna come at them like the Ravens came at them today. They wont be embarassed twice and especially at home. Should be a great game, it just wasnt their day today.

  24. lennylyles says: Sep 11, 2011 4:33 PM

The Steelers defense looked like the old defense that PFT reported all off season Troy got burned by Dickson and the young Ravens tight ends. The Ravens got rid of Mason, Heap. Housh, Gregg, went young at corners, the dline, and tight ends, and brought in speed. Yes it is one game but it was total domination by a younger, faster more athletic team. The national media would be destroying Joe if he would have played like the rapist today. Joe played really well. Ben looked awful.

  25. ny82jy says: Sep 11, 2011 4:35 PM

And one last thing. Ed Rees is a BEAST!! 2 more picks today Anyone who thinks Polamalu is better is crazy imo. Once again he got torched today for a td hes not the same player imo as hes been he last few yrs. Reed does nothing but make big play after big play. 43 is great too but just not the same. Reed played 10 games lasr yr and led the league in ints. Hes one of my favorite players thats not on my team.

  26. ravenboy4lyfe says: Sep 11, 2011 4:36 PM

  28. flaccounibrow says: Sep 11, 2011 4:38 PM

Ow. Ow. Ow. And more ow. That was an old fashioned beat down. And coming from the Ratbirds it really stings. Oh well, tail is firmly tucked between the legs and I will be slinking around for another hour or so.

As for questioning the PI on Boldin? Really? You think it is legal to shove off a defensive back with two hands? Fully extended? Come on. I can understand some of the calls in previous years were questionable, close, subject to interpretation, but not that one. Clear offensive pass interference.

Well, enjoy this one Ratbird fans. You deserve this one. A compete beat down.

The Ravens got this one. You could see they were still angry from the playoff loss. The Steelers didn’t look nsync today. Their fans can talk today or well till the next meeting. I have to admit they played better than I thought. 7 turnovers was alot. All I can say is icant wait till the next game. This seemed like the ravens SB they wanted it more. They were extra happy it was sickening watching them joker cheese on their ugly muggs but it is what it is & I’m sure the Steelers will be more prepared next time. To Ravens jus do it in the playoffs cause I still hope we can play for a 3rd time to see them choke when it counts! We still got 6

Great win for the Ravens. But remember this, Pats beat the Jets 45-3 in the regular season, and how did that work out?
As an aside, the Squealers are a bunch of punks. once the game got out of hand, a lot of cheap shots. Like the playground bully that gets punched in the nose. Can’t wait for the Pats to put their annual beating on them this season.

That’s the bottom line – in what was a tightly matched series with play or two making the difference, your squad got absolutely demolished!!!

Let’s just look at the tale of the tape:

    Polamalu – did nothing
    Woodley – did nothing
    Hampton – did nothing
Harrison – made a minor play or two
    Ben – FIVE tunrnovers
    Terrorist loving Mendenhall – nada
Ray Race – 107 yards in THREE Quarters…sat him to rest you were so plowed over by the 4th Q.
    Suggs – 2 sacks & forced fumble.
    Ngata – devastating!
Slow Ray Ray – owned you & an INT
    REED – 2 INTs
    Flacco- ate you alive

talk all you want – you were exposed and embarassed today…go cry in your iron city & try to pick up the pieces…save your comments for after you do…

As I’ve posted on two other threads now, I congratulate the Ravens on a superior performance, which really seems like an understatement. They completely dominated the game. No wonder it felt like Super Bowl Redux. With seven turnovers, we picked up where we left off in February. And I don’t see how you can blame that on the age of our defense. Those turnovers were given up by the offense, which isn’t old, but apparently has completely lost its grip–literally and figuratively.

After a weekend of NCAA games dominated by offense, I wanted to see a strong defensive performance today. I did. Unfortunately, it didn’t come from my team.

No excuses at all. Game was never close. Complete pasting basically the entire game, and one of the worst in a long while suffered by the Steelers. The stench will last until next Sunday.

The good news: this was only one game, and only the first game of the season. I think the Steelers can only get better from this point, lot of lessons to be learned today. What matters is how you end up.

    GO STEELERS!!

  69. ahostiletakeover says: Sep 11, 2011 5:59 PM

I love the only defense from Steeler fans: its just 1 game. You’re absolutely right, I won’t argue, but if you had been in the Ravens’ position the last 7 games where they were the better team and flat out either just gave it away or let Pitt make a play a pop warner team could make, then you would be celebrating getting this monkey of your team’s back. All we heard all offseason, the Ravens CAN’T beat the Steelers. It was true to that point but there is no such thing as as CAN’T in the NFL and while fat ass Hampton was running his mouth this week, the Ravens were getting ready, and it showed. The next chapter of every team is yet to be written and the Ravens know that, so don’t let we fans celebrating an absolute BEATDOWN think the Ravens are letting up this season. Maybe in November, the Steelers won’t have as many points as they have turnovers!

  70. iamthefootballjerk says: Sep 11, 2011 6:02 PM

Feels nice to see the Ravens handle the Steelers today. I will enjoy this one for the next six days before the Titans.

The Steelers will be back, and the next game in Pitt will be another battle. It’s all about who is holding the Lombardi trophy at the end of the year, and this was not the SB.

Have a lot of respect for Tomlin and the Steelers organization. I don’t want it any other way than to play Pittsburgh twice a year. This game will mean nothing if the year ends for the Ravens with an ‘L’.

  86. ppdoc13 says: Sep 11, 2011 7:28 PM

@deb – once again, class girl. you define class.

for all the classless fans that have been ripping Joe Flacco as not being able to do it, well the monkey is off his back and in a big way.

we were hungrier, faster, and wanted it much more today. more importantly we were younger.

with all due respect, i said before this season started that I thought the Steelers needed to get a lot younger on defense and that by years end I thought they would be having problems. I didn’t expect it this fast. they were a step behind the whole game on defense. they did not have an answer for our new pair of TE’s and now that Mason is gone, Boldin has stepped out of the shadows.

I thought that this game was much much more important for us to win than the Steelers, but the way we won will last us for awhile which is good and I am afraid that it will do the same for Pittsburgh which would be bad for the Steeler fans. I did not expect a smackdown. For as many times as Ben has beaten us, he has never done so in this fashion.

Game’s on AFCN and the Ravens are ready to rock and roll.

  87. steelcurtainn says: Sep 11, 2011 7:31 PM

7 turnovers and u lose to anybody. Baltimore, It was your sb, but in reality its one game, big deal. We will see u in Heinz ready for the usual beatdown Pittsburgh gives to the raisens. I would take a 3-0 postseason over 1 measly opening day win. Beat the steelers in the postseason then we can talk. Congrats today, just be glad the steelers didnt play like they normally do. Its just one game of a long season.

  88. mjh23 says: Sep 11, 2011 7:35 PM

Yeah Yeah Yeah. The Steelers got the crap kicked out of them today. Bottom line. First week. Also, just remember if it all ends tomorrow we have 6 and the Browns in disguise have 1. Better team.

  89. joerevs300 says: Sep 11, 2011 8:01 PM

As a Steelers fan this was about as embarrassing a loss to the Ravens as we have ever had since they come into existence. There wasn’t one facet of the game where Pittsburgh was even competitive.

I’m not buying the whole “age” thing, it sure didn’t prevent them from getting to the Super Bowl last year didn’t it?

You have a Ravens team feeling very disrespected, tired of the Steelers always being in the way, they made many moves to simply shake up the roster and get a little younger, with the Steelers choosing to mostly stand pat. All that talk that Flacco heard about not being good enough, he was out to prove people wrong and boy did he and the Ravens deliver a statement.

That being said, this is Week 1. The Ravens also haven’t beaten Cincinnati lately. Those are the kind of losses that have broken their back in recent seasons. Easy to focus on your most bitter rival; a lot harder to do it against teams you regard as inferior. And it will only take one Joe Flacco or Ray Lewis injury to completely change the dynamic of this team on both sides of the ball.

So Ravens fans, enjoy this one, but let’s remember: If you don’t make the playoffs, or the Super Bowl, or WIN the Super Bowl, I don’t think you’ll be looking back fondly on a Week 1 win.

  90. ravenmaniac1969 says: Sep 11, 2011 8:04 PM

The Packers have won 13 NFL Championships. Last time I checked that was more than 6. Football history did not begin in 1966.

  91. everyfootballfan says: Sep 11, 2011 8:09 PM

I truly enjoyed the game today, the steelers were totally dominated in every phase of the game, listening to the Raven talk, they believe if they win the divison then they have a good chance of winning the big one, I hope so

  92. jimmymcnultysbottleofjameson says: Sep 11, 2011 8:15 PM

@joerevs – we haven’t beaten cincy lately? we’ve split with them the last 3 years. Hardly dominating, but doesn’t exactly qualify as not beating them lately…and then you have to bring up possible injuries? You should be ashamed of yourself. We’re all a key injury or two away from a lost season jackwagon! …and since when have the Steelers had to hope for the Bengals to do their bidding, or for injuries, to win??? Damn, you must be feeling pretty bad about your squad. Hope you handle the losses to come with more class…

Appreciate the classy Ravens fans like ravenmaniac1969, mswravens, and ppdoc13. I’ve said all along Flacco was being underestimated. Now we’ll have to see what the rest of the season brings for both teams. I’m hoping mine will regroup.

  118. memphisyinzer says: Sep 12, 2011 8:54 AM

It’s obvious that the Ravens did their homework and practiced hard for this game. They came out on top because of their superior preparation, hard work and athletic skills. Here’s a hats off to both the players and the coaching staff.

While it’s true that this is only 1 game out of 16, and a whole season to go, the Ravens fans do deserve the bragging rights due to the intense rivalry involved between these 2 teams. Congrats to the Ravens and their fans……they deserve to gloat. Had the Steelers won, you can bet a Kielbasi and a case of Iron City that we would be gloating too.

However, as others have mentioned here earlier, there will be another meeting later this year. Hopefully the Steelers will prepare as well for that one as the Ravens did for this one.

    GO STEELERS!!!

  119. somesome says: Sep 12, 2011 9:32 AM

Harrison and Palomalu look old and slow.

Palomalu was late on every play, first touchdown and horse collar on Williams. i felt lasty year he had no business winning defensive player, Suh was better, as were others.

Harrison, as good as he is, never played any significant role in Steeler-Ravens games. He has ZERO sacks on Flacco.

Suggs had 12 sacks on Ben before the game and added three, plus two forced fumbles and 15 solo tackles.

Steelers did not tackle well, almost every tackle the Ravens made were text book, arms wrapped and head to the side.

Ngata bent Mendenhall like a Pretzel.

Ed Reed and Ray Ray are as amazing as they have ever been. No defensive player on the Steeler’s is or ever has been in the same class with Ray Ray, year sixteen and looks fresher than Harrison and Palomalu combined. No Steeler’s defensive player has mattered as long as Ray has played at this level.

Steeler/Ravens games are not just one game ( and out of 16, every game counts) , it gives the Ravens a win and the Steelers a loss within the division. We will see if the Steelers can get to the AFC championship game if they have to go the Wild card route.

let’s bring this back to the real world for a second. first, the ravens PLAYERS beat the steelers PLAYERS. reading these boards, some of you make it sound like you made a personal appearance on the field. secondly, all of this reaction from the ravens fans suggest to me that you didnt expect to win. i’m sure that’s not the case, but such overreaction is not becoming of someone who expects to win. it was your home opener and your team played like it. they were crisp, confident, and aggressive all day long. hats off to them! they played well and didnt suffer from the any of the lapses that have cost them several games before. however, it is in fact just one game, just like it is every time. you should never let one win or one loss get you too high or too low. this was only a big game because of who was in it. no playoff seeding at stake, no playoff births to be won or lost, no trip to the SB on the line, just another chapter in the rivalry that is the Ravens-Steelers.
our play yesterday reminded me of a big brother who’s tired of beating up little brother and couldnt muster the motivation to show up with a chip on our collective shoulder. we just showed up and expected things to go like they usually do and the ravens had other plans. it was obvious they devoted a great deal of planning to this game, and we apparently did not prepare and execute with the same amount of focus, which seems like such a shame, not to mention foolish. anybody who watches our games knows this is an anomaly and not likely to be repeated in the same season. we will definitely see you guys at least once more this season. til then……

i dont want to discredit what the packers accomplished pre-SB era, but i’m going to anyway. yes, you should be proud of your franchises’ accomplishments, however, the NFL then was nowhere near where it is today as far as competition, skill level, etc. not to mention number of teams. not saying we should discount them and pretend they didnt happen, but let’s just keep it in it’s proper context.

  130. rayriceisnice says: Sep 12, 2011 10:58 PM

I agree, I would be very surprised to see the steelers play that poorly, but sorry you do sound kinda like every other steeler fans trying to downplay this loss, we out played you, plain and simple, with all the crap your players have talked all offseason, I find it hard to believe they werent motivated, fact is, your team has a lot of work to do before next week, this game wasn’t an anomaly, it was a fantastically executed game plan against a team that just plain and simple isn’t as good as the ravens, the steelers were terrible on every side of the ball, your defense was destroyed at the line, in the secondary and everywhere else. But me as a diehard ravens fan appreciate you giving credit where it’s due, and if were my team I’d defend them equally, can’t wait for the game in Pitt, I hope it’s more completive, but another butt whooping on the steelers would be sweet, it was long overdue!

  131. steelerdynasty2010 says: Sep 13, 2011 7:44 AM

if this weren’t an anomaly, it would happen more often. fact is it doesnt, to either team. going into the game, the point differential over something like the last 15 games is only 7 points TOTAL.
if your ravens are so superior, please explain why they keep shrinking in the big moments against the steelers. again, this was a big game because of the rivalry, not because of its’ consequences. and please do not start crying about the refs. you sound better than that.
“you do sound kinda like every other steeler fans trying to downplay this loss”
you’re right, after thinking more about it, i think we should trade away the whole team and push the panic button because we lost our first road game to our division rival who probably didnt spend an entire offseason stewing about last year’s failings.

  132. rayriceisnice says: Sep 13, 2011 12:26 PM

Uhhh, I have said nothing about the refs, as a matter of fact, many a steelers fans have claimed Harrison was held all game, which is straight booty chowder. And your still down playing the loss, it is big, you got embarrassed in game 1, by your rival, by your biggest division rival, the only team that can keep you in an airplane during the playoffs, I get all your points, you seem very knowledgeable but if this game went the other way I’d be pisses, but then again we were home and I expected us to win this game. Not 35-7, maybe 24-17. If the ravens came out and played that poorly I’d be very concerned, I think secretly you Pitt fans are much more worried then you claim. I think we both can agree on one thing….next week are big W’s on both of our “before the season, what’s our record gonna be” schedules lol. Good luck this year. November in Pitt should be awesome, I might go back up there for the game, I went to the pLayoff game, I hated the city as a whole and the stadium was pretty terrible but I was shortage how nice the majority of the fans were to us “crows”

holding happens on EVERY play, whether to harrison or someone else. IMO he’s held significantly more than the average bear, but whining about it isnt going to put any more laundry on the field so it is what it is. if they call it, great! if not, gotta play on.
i hope you ravens fans are secretly not as excited as you seem to be. again, it’s just one game. didnt you guys learn anything from the jets-pats series last year? yes, we got embarrassed and humbled, but i seriously doubt it’s going to be the catalyst for an abysmal season. we got smacked in the mouth and i’m interested to see how we respond. if the seahawks beat us the way you guys did, then i’ll be worried. you guys arent a cellar dweller, you’re a perennial contender with great players top to bottom, but i’m just not going to crown you world beaters because you beat us up in your building in week 1. to be honest, you guys are acting like you’re the browns or something. expect success, and act like you expected it when you achieve it….just like us…

  136. steelerdynasty2010 says: Sep 18, 2011 12:19 AM

and really, i just cant get over how many ravens fans come on here and try to convince us to be embarrassed. it’s laughable. you guys are 1-8 when facing roethlisberger as our starter…1-8….with your 1 coming exactly one week ago….finally! get over yourselves, turn the page, and get ready for your next opponent, your superbowl is over. perhaps ravens fans shrivel up and have a pity party when their team loses (is that what you guys have been doing since january?), it’s just not in a true steeler fan. we’re going to stand behind our team and never lose faith in our squad. it’s a what a real fan should do.
saying we were not ready is stating an obvious fact. we were ill-prepared and not ready to match the intensity of our opponent. it’s not an excuse, it’s what happened. but no matter how many of you want to hit the panic button and declare yourselves king, we still wont buy it.
