Things getting even worse for Falcons in Chicago

Matt Ryan AP

The first half didn’t go well for the Falcons and the second half is looking even worse.

Matt Ryan was stripped on a sack by Julius Peppers and Brian Urlacher scooped the ball up for a 12-yard touchdown return to put the Bears up 30-6 in the third quarter at Soldier Field. The touchdown came on the heels of a Bears touchdown drive that ended when Jay Cutler found Matt Spaeth on a play-action pass from the one. It looked like Devin Hester might have gotten into the end zone on the previous play, but the refs ruled he was out on the one and a Lovie Smith challenge failed to change that decision.

Things were briefly looking up for the Falcons on their first drive of the second half when they took the ball from their own six into the red zone. The drive stalled when the Bears defense made a couple of plays and the Falcons had to settle for a Matt Bryant field goal. That killed their momentum and now all of it is on Chicago’s side as everything is breaking the Bears’ way this afternoon.

Bring on the naysayer’s chorus but this Bears team is going to win the division (again) and get past the NFC title game this time!

Everybody seems to love the Falcons but they were a fraud last year and they’re showing why.

    Saints division to lose.

    DA BEARS!!!!

So the Falcons are picking up right where they left off last season.

    Bear down Bears!

  5. scudbot says: Sep 11, 2011 3:39 PM

The Pack broke that team in the Georgia Dome. .

Oh yeah he Bears are done. Urlacher is washed up. NFC defensive player of the week washed up. the Aints are going down next

    Falcons are SOFT.

Falcons are still terrible only difference this year is that they gave up their entire draft and future to be .

  9. jimmysee says: Sep 11, 2011 3:46 PM

    Next week: Geaux Bears.

The score just goes to show how overrated the Falcons were when they hosted the Packers in the playoffs last year. The Falcons of 2010 were a paper tiger that had the 22nd-ranked pass defense even after playing Carolina twice and beating up on the lowly NFC West. Adding Ray Edwards and drafting Julio Jones didn’t fix the Falcons’ Achilles heel. In a different division or matched against a division other than the NFC West and the Falcons wouldn’t have made the playoffs this year. Today’s drubbing by the Bears proves the point.

No, the Falcons were pretty mediocre last year. See previous post. Actually, the Falcons’ 2010 pass D looked an awful lot like the Packer D we saw exposed earlier this week.

    What a shame.

Kudos to the Bears. I said a few days ago they had a bad vibe around them that may not mean anything to W-L, but a bad vibe. Looks like they took that and made it their “female dog”. I’ve never thought much of Ryan but dang, this is an epic beatdown.

  14. frankrizzo51 says: Sep 11, 2011 3:58 PM

These “birds of prey” have no heart. What a disappointment for all Falcon fans.

Think we can shelve that whole “Matt Ryan is an elite QB” talk – he’s responsible for what – 3 turn overs this game?

ATL – you didn’t lose last year due to offense so mortgaging the future to get Julio makes little sense.

You lost because of D and that D is on display against the Bears.

Hey, you’re back! Good to see you didn’t jump in a river after that loss in the Championship game.

  17. kibawib says: Sep 11, 2011 4:04 PM

Actually I need to correct my previous post. The Falcons’ wretched D only game up 353 yards to the Bears (with 3 minutes to play)….The Pack D gave up 120+ yards more. So, the Packer D actually looked worse than the Falcons’ D in week one. Sorry, my bad on that one.

“Actually, the Falcons’ 2010 pass D looked an awful lot like the Packer D we saw exposed earlier this week.” Snarky, but you probably ought not to draw conclusions about a team’s season after Game 1 just because you’re envious and hate them. Replace “broke” with “exposed” if you like. Now go have fun watching McNabb drill the carpet till the Chargers drive him into the dirt.

Cept the Bears are NOT the Saints when it comes to offensive firepower.

GB’s D was playing a much tougher opponent than Atlanta was.

  21. kibawib says: Sep 11, 2011 4:11 PM

Now scudbot, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. Why so sore about the Packers D getting sliced up this week? Neither the Vikes nor any other team could possibly be in the packers’ league. Just take it from Peter King, who’ll tell anyone that will listen yours is the Greatest Team That Ever Played. So sorry if I offended. What was I thinking. I mean, you guys won’t lose a game this year, right?

  22. larrydavidstern says: Sep 11, 2011 4:11 PM

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Matt Ryan is solid, not special, a game manager, not a game changer. Overrated!!!

  23. frankrizzo51 says: Sep 11, 2011 4:14 PM

Now go home and get your shine box.

  24. scudbot says: Sep 11, 2011 4:16 PM

kibaweb: The Packers won. Have a nice week.

“GB’s D was playing a much tougher opponent than Atlanta was.”

    —————————————————-

Well we know that isn’t true either, right? The 2010 Falcons were 5th in scoring. The Saints were 11th. Look it up. Face.

  26. scudbot says: Sep 11, 2011 4:24 PM

Of course, of course, clearly the Packers suck, kibawib. But if you want to go back to last year and mix and match stats to your liking, you lost 31-3 at home. To the Packers. Not sure how you can make much out of that, but give it a try.

  27. kibawib says: Sep 11, 2011 4:24 PM

Hey scubdot, if you’re watching (and I know you are), Harvin dedicated that 103-yard kick return TD to you. But that’s ok, the Chargers are a rotten opponent, right? Of wait, we’re 9-point underdogs. My bad on that one.

  28. kibawib says: Sep 11, 2011 4:28 PM

“kibaweb: The Packers won. Have a nice week.”

There’s no “E” in kibawib. Get it right.

  29. scudbot says: Sep 11, 2011 4:33 PM

    Aw, sorry about the typo.

kibawib: The Packers won. Have a nice week.

    Reading comprehension hard for you?

Atlanta’s D was playing CHICAGO who was ranked 30th in overall offense last year. 21st in scoring.

GB’s D was playing NEW ORLEANS’ which was ranked 6th in overall offense last year. 11th in scoring.

Which basically makes my point that GB’s D was playing a much harder opponent than Atlanta’s Defense was.

So by the numbers – yes GB didn’t perform as well as the Falcons but AS I SAID they played a tougher opponent last year.

Reading – top to bottom, left to right. Little words form sentences. Take Tylenol for any headaches…
