Jon Beason will miss the season

J. Beason2 AP

Florio mentioned this morning that the Panthers were bracing for the worst when it comes to linebacker Jon Beason.

They learned the worst this afternoon.  Beason will miss the season with a torn Achilles, coach Ron Rivera confirmed Monday via the Charlotte Observer.

You only have to look at Beason’s contract to see his importance to the team.  The team gave him a $20 million signing bonus last month on a $51.3 million, six-year contract.

Beason had Achilles soreness throughout the offseason and seemed to rush back on to the field Sunday. Carolina has to be thinking twice about letting Beason play, no matter how hard he pushed for it.

Dan Connor will take over for Beason.  Carolina’s entire defense will take a hit, especially on passing downs. Beason was arguably the second best young inside linebacker in football behind Patrick Willis.

Don’t get me wrong it hurts them, but Connor is good.

sucks after they went 1-0 in the moral victory category this wknd.
i do like the upswing of this team and if CAM can play that well week in and week out, then look out. sucks to lose Beason.

James Starks is now a solid #2 option at RB this week.

  5. jeffro33 says: Sep 12, 2011 4:28 PM

Solid player. Tough loss for the Panthers after a game that could be considered a ‘moral victory’…

  6. catman72 says: Sep 12, 2011 4:29 PM

    damn.

  7. thetigerreport says: Sep 12, 2011 4:29 PM

Do we have a running count on how many Achilles injuries have occured this year? Then compare it to past years averages?

    This is absolutley absurd.

  8. stevincinci says: Sep 12, 2011 4:32 PM

Now, Rey Maualuga is the 2nd best inside linebacker after Patrick Willis. Yeah, that’s right, a Bengal.

    Damn right.

    That sucks. Pennington was right.

And starting at inside linebacker for your Carolina Panthers… Dan. Morgan. Err. Connor.; Dan Connor.

  15. kayotiicdat says: Sep 12, 2011 4:45 PM

As a Saints fan I’m glad to hear this.. But as a person i wish the guy a healthy recovery. Beason is one of the best in the NFL and I hope he can bounce back from this.

  16. radrntn says: Sep 12, 2011 4:48 PM

ouch big time…that is a big blow for the panthers. I hope he comes back strong next year.

  17. mike83ri says: Sep 12, 2011 4:50 PM

I’ll also take Jerod Mayo or Lawrence Timmons over Beason.

The players agree on Mayo, landing 62 on the top 100 and Beason not even making it.

The Steelers GM agrees on Timmons, giving him more money per year this offseason than Beason got.

  18. clavette says: Sep 12, 2011 4:51 PM

sucks to see a top player go down, especially just running down the field and having this happen

dan conner is a beast and will have no problem stepping up for beason. is he as good? no but theres no huge drop off either

  19. pioniere says: Sep 12, 2011 4:59 PM

That sucks. Unfortunately, he probably won’t be the same player when he comes back.

  20. rjkilla says: Sep 12, 2011 5:03 PM

panthers rushed him back…it’s squarely the fault of the coaches and doctors. fire ryan vermillian because every year we are decimated by injuries

  21. descendency says: Sep 12, 2011 5:05 PM

@CKL, if there is anything Pennington knows about, it is injuries.

Huh? I loved me some Maualuga coming out of college, but he hasn’t been great.

Jerod Mayo all the way, crazy man.

That’s 2 easy wins for Tampa Bay again.

  24. chiktikka says: Sep 12, 2011 5:12 PM

A great young man and outstanding athlete. Like Steve Smith said, everyone should play with the intensity that Beason does, even if you end up blowing out a tire because of it.

    RIP.

  27. jimmysee says: Sep 12, 2011 5:24 PM

Taking a hit on passing downs is particularly problematic when facing the Packers.

  28. favreforever says: Sep 12, 2011 5:27 PM

    It’s “Beason season!”. In 2012.

  29. capslockkey says: Sep 12, 2011 5:57 PM

Yep. The lockout has had no affect on player health. What is this, like the 50th player lost for the season already? Guys aren’t just getting dinged up, they are having their seasons ended.

  30. nps6724 says: Sep 12, 2011 6:16 PM

I’m a big Saints fan and as much as I hate Carolina, I’m a fan of Beason. Sucks that it happened because from everything I’ve heard, he’s a good guy who works hard and basically took a leadership role as a rookie. Hopefully he recovers fully.

  31. mwm367 says: Sep 12, 2011 6:20 PM

The coaches did not rush him back. You do not know what you’re talking about. Jon played because he wanted to play. Period. He is a warrior and wanted to be out there. And the two injuries are not even related other than the fact it was the same leg.

  32. axespray says: Sep 12, 2011 6:42 PM

That dude is the heart of that defense.

He’ll probably be on the sidelines getting his dudes to battle, Beason don’t quit, Dude played with intensity through all of last season from what I saw… either way, it won’t matter.

    Packers will slaughter that d.

  33. hosslaxx says: Sep 12, 2011 6:50 PM

    @6the6ringedsteelerslolatyouremptylittletrophycase7

What is an LOL is that joke of a game the steelers displayed BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA harrison was puffin an air tank on the sideline and hines ward is still lookin for his teeth after he was sent feet strait in the air….your clearly a classless individual….come back strong next yr beason

  34. mdnittlion says: Sep 12, 2011 8:21 PM

So now he’ll have time to help the NCAA in it’s investigation of “The U”.

  35. goawayeverybody says: Sep 12, 2011 10:01 PM

Totally pointless letting him come back this early since the Panthers lost anyway. Why not sit him for two weeks and let him get healthy before he comes back?

Soreness is there for a reason. It’s our bodies telling us to rest.

I think you should be LOLing at that game your 6rings played on Sunday in Baltimore. That was a real LOL.

You will be missed Beason. Time for Connor to step up and show what he is made of. He’s a solid player.

Beason made the list at like 94 or something, i know for sure, he was in the bottom 10-15 on the list cuz two Panthers made the list, Jordan Gross and Jon Beason, just saying..

  38. panthersfan83 says: Sep 14, 2011 10:32 AM

Beason will be missed. Connor is a good back up but can’t cover like him. Beason was only 94 on the list because of our terrible season and he played out of position filling in for Thomas Davis. If anybody can make it back form that kind of injury it is BEAST.
