LeGarrette Blount complains about his playing time

LeGarrette Blount, Cliff Avril, Chris Houston AP

Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount ended Sunday’s loss to the Lions with five carries for 15 yards. That lack of involvement in the offense made him mad enough to punch someone.

“I’m a play-maker on this team also, so I feel like I should be on the football field more,” Blount said, per the St. Petersburg Times. “We got away from our game plan. We got away from getting me the football.”

The Bucs definitely shifted their offensive approach as the game went on: Their first offensive play was a handoff to Blount, and he got three more handoffs on the Bucs’ next 13 offensive plays. And then he saw the ball once in the second half.

But the truth is, the Bucs’ offense was a lot better without Blount than with him. Early in the game, the offense was stagnating. Once they shifted to more three-receiver sets and allowed Josh Freeman to spread the ball around more, the Buccaneers finally started to have some success against the Lions.

Still, Bucs coach Raheem Morris said he thinks Blount might have a point.

“We have a weapon in Blount, we want to be able to run the ball with him,” Morris said Monday. “Maybe as a coach, I went too fast, I went too early to the two-minute offense. But I wanted to get something going, get something generated, get [Freeman] some confidence and get all those guys going. And it worked to the standpoint that we were able to get back into the game. . . . You can blame me for that, you guys can write coach stuck to the two-minute offense too early. But I was giving our offense a chance to get going and we got it going.”

So Morris has no problem with Blount wanting the ball more. And next week, he may just give him the ball more. Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

so the RB who averaged 3.0 yards per carry, can’t catch and can’t block wants to be on the field more? makes sense.

A good way to ensure yourself more than five carries is to average more than three yards a pop. Man up Blount.

At what point do these RBs in the league understand that its a passing league and that there are hundreds of guys waiting in the wings to get the chance to be the starter on that team?

All the Bucs did was Pass from the get-go. They went into PANIC mode down 10-6 in the first quarter. From there they played the rest of the game in a miserable hurry up offense with that jabroni Earnest Graham at RB. This game is on the coach. You have to establish the run with a young QB & they never even made an attempt to do that. Freeman looked awful, the Lions knew the pass was coming all game. Graham is a jabroni – he has as many yards as he has touches.

  21. xxxviichamps says: Sep 12, 2011 3:05 PM

Everyone who has no idea what they’re talking about, please chime in.

He averaged 3 yards per carry? Yeah well, he had 5 carries…Im sure there have been a few backs in league history that averaged 3 yards per carry on their first 5 runs and then went on to have big games.

To author, the Bucs offense was no better without Blount in the game. The offense was just as stagnant, they didn’t wake up until the second to last drive because Freeman was forced to stretch the field. We entered the second half down 7 points and played in the “two-minute offense” for the remainder of the game, somebody feel free to explain that logic. The coaches panicked, theres alot of people to blame for this one, Raheem Morris and Greg Olsen are at the top of that list.

  22. realitypolice says: Sep 12, 2011 3:10 PM

Maybe Coach Brock needs to realize that you can actually pass the ball and run the ball in the same game plan.

  23. dukemarc says: Sep 12, 2011 3:11 PM

Hmmmm, run at the potent front 4 of the Lions or pick apart their pathetic secondary? I know which one I would choose.

  24. chrisbinjax says: Sep 12, 2011 3:11 PM

not what I expected when I drafted him 2nd round in my fantasy league….dude can jump over or run over people…give him the ball because the Bucs will not win relying on Freeman’s arm!

  25. nomoreseasontix says: Sep 12, 2011 3:13 PM

It’s simple. Below average production equals less playing time. If you want to be a big part of the offense, be a big part of the offense when your number is called.
If you don’t do it, they’ll find someone who will.

    ==================
    BS.

Five carries is way too small a sample size to evaluate performance. If you look at any running back who gets 15-20 carries in a game, I guarantee they will have 5 carries of three yards or less mixed in.

Hell, Barry Sanders use to have 3-4 runs per game where he LOST yards.

Not saying Blount is anywhere near as good as Sanders (he’s not), but you can’t judge his ability by stats from Sunday.

  27. mattrussell1124 says: Sep 12, 2011 3:17 PM

anyone that says he sucked b/c of a 3.0 average after 5 carries is an idiot.

Correction. They went into panic mode when they were UP 10-6 in the first quarter.

  29. jaggedmark says: Sep 12, 2011 3:19 PM

    That wasn’t too smart.

I love when people who have no idea what they’re talking about spout off.

Hey simpleton, Lions kicked a FG on their first possession, then the Bucs kicked a FG, then Talib took back an interception for a TD.

Bucs up 10-3. The Lions ended up getting another FG and ended the first quarter, Bucs up 10-6.

Either watch the game or read the scoring summary before opening your ignorant mouth.

If LeGarrette Blount decides to go all “LeGarrette Blount” on Raheem Morris, I got a feeling that Raheem Morris would go “Buddy Ryan” on him. That would be entertaining.

  32. drgreenstreak says: Sep 12, 2011 3:27 PM

Give Blount a blunt and sit him in the corner. He is a man of limited reasoning ability and needs a break from reality.
By season’s end, Blount will be in trouble for his mouth and fists. He will even get in Coach’s face.

Blount has extremely marginal social skills. Makes most people hate him before they get a chance to know what an ignorant moron he really is.

  33. cbrady2k says: Sep 12, 2011 3:35 PM

The play calling was awful yesterday. 4th and 1 with less than 8 mins to go at the Det 11 yard line down by 2 TDs and the stupid OC Greg Olson calls a shotgun draw play to our FB…

Freeman bailed out Olson’s awful play calling last year but he can’t be expected to always do that. Before that 4th down play they had two 3-and-1′s they didn’t get either, once again Blount wasn’t in the game. VERY STUPID play calling. Olson needs to go back to the Middle School JV coaching level he’s qualified for and get out of town.

Blount: Then why didn’t I get more carries.
Morris: Oh the bosses said running back by committee a day before the game. They hate fantasy football.

ummm stupid… if that was the case AP would not have just gotten 100 mil. if you have a back thta can physically wear down a defense you use them. Blount beat up on teams last year and that team full of underachievers went 10-6. give blount the ball, he will be happy and my fantasy team will win!!

  44. nflfollower says: Sep 12, 2011 5:56 PM

The Bucs offense didn’t start working until the Lions were up by 14 and got too conservative on D. The Bucs first 3 possessions in the 2nd half were 3 and out. So to Raheem—-it really wasn’t any adjustments you made. The Lions took their foot off your throat. Hopefully they learn not to do that in the future.

spoken like someone who cant forget his oregon days or is just a boise fan. i am pretty sure blount would have been a like a 2nd or 3rd round pick out of college had he not had a lapse in judgment. therefore he took a major pay cut swallowed some pride and became an undrafted starter. and everything he said he was right about, the bucs got away from there winning formula and also cost me a win in my fantasy league. blount is good give him the rock

    GO 49ERS

you know what you could do, you could cry about it, LB…

    OR…

you can man up, learn to block better than E Graham, learn to pick up short yardage better than E Graham, THEN you can complain about your playing time. you’re in your first full season as a starter, learn the game and keep your mouth shut. focus on minnesota.
