Sebastian Janikowski ties NFL record for longest field goal

Oakland Raiders v Pittsburgh Steelers Getty Images

Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski tied an NFL record on Monday night when he booted a 63-yard field goal just before halftime.

The last 63-yard field goal was also aided by the altitude of Denver, booted by Jason Elam in 1998. The other 63-yard field goal was kicked by Tom Dempsey of the Saints in New Orleans in 1970.

Janikowski has long been renowned for having one of the strongest legs in football. Last year he hit a 59-yard field goal, and in 2009 he made one from 61 yards. In 2007 Janikowski hit the upright on a missed 64-yard attempt that was long enough that it could have been good from 70 yards. And in 2008 Janikowski attempted a 76-yard field goal, although that one came up a good 20 yards short.

Now Janikowski has his name in the record book: He’s the only player in NFL history with two field goals of 60-plus yards, and he has a field goal as long as any NFL player has ever kicked.

This just in. Increased foot fat leads to longer distances on kicks.

You will now see a ton of overweight kickers on every roster…and wait…Michelle Obama has just called for all 14 Janikowski jerseys to be burned immediately.

I don’t think you are in a position to decide who is worthy of being labeled a “football” player, seeing as you are posting in an internet thread at all.

  13. kyleortonsarm says: Sep 13, 2011 12:54 AM

Nobody cares about that. No records broken, no point in posting this.

Same ol Raiders. Penalties to keep a team still in the game, that they’ve shouldve blown out. Lot of fighting, and crap talking going back and forth, so Raiders lost their cool late…Denver will win this, if Raiders dont put them away.

You are a moron. Just because kickers aren’t jacked-up meatheads absolutely does not mean they aren’t football players. Can you kick a 60 yard+ field goal? No. Do these guys workout and train with the team? Yes. Maybe they are not as good of athletes as some, but to say they are not football players is disingenuous at best. Moron.

still cannot believe that the Raiders drafted a kicker in the first round.

I understand that’s not the norm for an NFL team to draft a kicker with such a high draft choice, but you can’t deny it turned out to be a great pick. Gotta be one of the best this decade for that team. Janikowski is that good. Al Davis solidified that part of the team for years with a pro bowl player. If the raiders actually competed every week and were back in the playoff mix on a yearly basis, they would have a damn good shot at every close game they played with janikowski’s accuracy and distance. So many NFL teams go through kickers like beers on Sunday but the raiders don’t even have to focus on that they know there guy has the edge every week. Plus he is huge and will f@&k you up on the kick return. Perfect raider. They love him in oakland.

I was also surprised that he didn’t have to rekick, as that was one of the 3 plays the Raiders didn’t get flagged in the first half.

  32. keithdylan says: Sep 13, 2011 1:53 AM

Have you seen Jano lately? He’s not fat, he takes care of himself, he has not been in any trouble for years, and if he played for a team that was worth a darn the last 10 years he would be a Pro Bowler.

  33. orangeinmyblood says: Sep 13, 2011 2:12 AM

I hope the guy who predicted SeaBass as a Hall of Famer is trolling, and doesn’t really think he would ever be considered. Ridiculous.

How is it that Janikowski has accomplished all of these things but has never been to the Pro Bowl? Just more proof of the anti-Raider jealousy that’s still around.
And for all those who dispute that drafting him in the first round was the right move tell me this: Who was drafted in the first round that year that is a) still around or b) has been as much of an impact player as Janikowski has? That’s what I thought.

  39. keeponhating says: Sep 13, 2011 2:27 AM

Love Janikowski and it’s an all time kick, but what Tom Dempsey did, kicking it below sea level, strait on with half a foot blows my mind.

It’s funny that Janikowski and Dempsey are built the same. Jason Elam? Feh.

  55. torturedraiderfan says: Sep 13, 2011 7:00 AM

Sooner or later he’s going to kick a 70 yarder. I’ll take a fat kicker anyday if he keeps kicking like this. Think there are a few teams with skinny kickers that wouldn’t trade for Jano is a second.

  56. sonofsamiam says: Sep 13, 2011 7:17 AM

It was really only a matter of time until Janikowski did this. That is the kick people will remember, but his 61yd OT winner in the snow at Cleveland was even more impressive in my mind.

    ************************************************
Sorry, but I have to disagree.

Dempsey “disadvantage” was actually an advantage when it came to long distance FG’s. He was a straight on kicker, like they all were back then, and with that perfectly flat front of his foot, he could kill the ball.

    Accuracy was another story though.

It’s amazing that Dempsey had what a lot of people considered an advantage with a squared off shoe custom made for his deformed foot while the other two had to tie the record with regular pointed-toe shows.

I dont know about having the best special teams, but the kicker and punter are pretty good. They dont make the special teams, theyre just 1 guy out of 11. Ill agree that Jano is the best kicker in the game, but as a Bills fan Ill see your Lechler with Moorman
