Steelers place Colon on injured reserve, again

Last year, the Steelers lost right tackle Willie Colon to a ruptured Achilles’ tendon during training camp.  This year, after signing him to a new, five-year, $29 million contract, the Steelers lost Colon in the first game of the season.

On Tuesday, they placed Colon on injured reserve, two days after he suffered a torn triceps against the Ravens.

The news came via a press release, into which the move was tucked, almost as an afterthought.  The announcement devoted three paragraphs to the news that the Steelers had signed tackle Jamon Meredith.  At the bottom, the Steelers mentioned that Colon was placed on IR “[t]o make room on the roster.”

Taking Colon’s place in the starting lineup will be Marcus Gilbert, the team’s second-round pick in the 2011 draft.
