With Kaeding out for year, Chargers sign Nick Novak

Nick+Novak1 AP

Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding is out for the season with a torn ACL, and Nick Novak has been signed to replace him.

The team announced today that Novak, who lost the kicking competition in Jets camp, has been signed.

Novak last played in a regular-season game in 2008, when he was with the Chiefs. He has also played for the Redskins and Cardinals.

Chargers defensive lineman Luis Castillo, who is expected to miss most of the season with a broken leg, was not placed on injured reserve, suggesting that the Chargers expect him to be ready to go by the end of the year and, they hope, the playoffs.

The Chiefs lose integral players on both offense and defense along with their dignity, and the Chargers only lose their damn kicker. Such is life.

Last year when the Chiefs won the division, you had the healthiest roster in the NFL, while the Chargers suited up a record tying 74 players. The Chiefs were super lucky with injuries last year, and now you have lost a couple of guys. That is just the NFL. The Chiefs were not the best team in the division last year, and they surely will not be this year. A healthy (compared to last year) Chargers team will end up on top.

Novak seems like a good guy who really wants to play and is willing to give it everything he’s got, but there has to be a reason he’s never lasted a full season with one team. Sure, he’s only been brought in to replace superior kickers who got injured, (and was released once they returned), but I can’t imagine he’s that great if he hasn’t been able to catch on somewhere else after five years.

I say just let Sci-fi kick everything this year, but here’s to hoping Novak has a breathrough year, for his sake and San Diego’s.
