Chris Johnson: Ravens tried to hurt me in the playoffs

Chris Johnson AP

As Titans running back Chris Johnson prepares to play the Ravens on Sunday, he’s thinking back to a playoff meeting between the Titans and Ravens after the 2008 season — when Johnson says the Ravens tried to hurt him.

They were trying to hurt me a little bit,” Johnson said today. “But the play I actually got hurt on, it was a fair play, somebody landed on my ankle the wrong way and I fell back the wrong way. It was a fair play when I got hurt.”

That ankle injury forced Johnson out of that playoff game against the Ravens before halftime. He had 100 yards from scrimmage before he got hurt (72 yards rushing and 28 yards receiving), but the Titans’ offense was ineffective without him, and the Ravens won 13-10.

Despite the injury, Johnson said he doesn’t view the Ravens as a dirty team and he’s not out for revenge.

“I really don’t have any carry-over from then, that was two years ago,” he said. “I’m just trying to win the game.”

If the Titans are going to win on Sunday, they’re going to need a better game than Johnson gave them in Week One, when he carried nine times for 24 yards.

I can’t believe he’s crying before the game. Isn’t he smart enough to realize that the Raven defense loves to have a player afraid before the game?

I’m sorry but it’s plainly obvious that any Steeler’s fans talking smack after last Sunday are CLEARLY insane.

Until your team earns back the respect that was kicked out of them last game, you got nothing to talk about.

Those 6 winning teams were other teams. We’re here in the now. And right now you got a team that got crapped on in front of the entire country.

  26. NFLJunkie says: Sep 14, 2011 7:19 PM

Because the press asked Johnson a direct question about it. They asked Ed Reed about the same thing in the conference call today.

    Sheesh.

….which is what Johnson also said in the complete quote, that he had no hard feelings and it’s football.

He didn’t complain back when it happened (although there was a lot of media discussion about it at the time, fueled in part by a Rex Ryan quote after the game), and Johnson’s not complaining now. It’s just something the local media is dredging up now because these teams are facing each other again.

  36. ampking101 says: Sep 14, 2011 7:54 PM

All a preemptive excuse for his lack of production/injury in this game. Chris Johnson is done for this season. He already got paid exactly what he wanted and now he can peacefully decline into a third string running back.

Faster than Usain Bolt my ass. Johnson will go down in history as a two year production bust.

I see “6 Rings” decided to create another multiple account. What happened? Did your old account(s) get banned? PFT should ban IP addresses so some of the trolling around here can end.

Chris, if you’re afraid of getting injured and pointing fingers at guys who are paid millions to stop you at all costs, then you’re in the wrong sport.

  41. skinsrock says: Sep 14, 2011 8:41 PM

  42. bostonbias says: Sep 14, 2011 9:04 PM

Just because the Ravens are a good football team and likely will win, does not mean that they are not the dirtiest team in any sport. Just look at their OL and DL play. If you watc game film there is no doubt who the most dirty team is.

  43. revischrist says: Sep 14, 2011 9:21 PM

  45. ampatsisahypocrite says: Sep 14, 2011 9:28 PM

Johnson’s not whining — get yourself a game tape and you’ll see what he means. The Ravens were shooting for his knees, looking to twist his leg, not simply going for the tackle. They were out to hurt him. Why can’t we face the fact that sometimes a player is simply telling the truth?

I’ll do you one better (and dedicate this to the 119 clowns who gave you the thumbs down on this). Get your Ravens-Steelers game tape and run it to exactly 14:54 of the 1st period. You’ll see Hampton getting hit high by one Raven OL and chopped low by a second Raven OL.

Yeah, the Ravens pounded the Steelers. They also chop blocked the living bejeesus out of them. It won’t be forgotten — Ngata might want to watch his knees next game.

  47. whatwouldlombardido says: Sep 14, 2011 9:43 PM

“Why can’t we face the fact that sometimes a player is simply telling the truth?”
Because only a MORON says anything that can be used as bulletin board material when you are about to face a defense like Baltimore’s…and you’ve got an offense that sucks as much as the Titan’s.

  48. deebo92 says: Sep 14, 2011 9:47 PM

    Stillers fan here,

Come on people, it seems nowadays any dominating defense is tagged with the “dirty” label. It’s just how defenses are suppose to be. Prime example: Suh. If you dont like it, dont dress on Sundays. Suh isnt dirty, Ravens arent dirty. Physical? Hell yeah. Not to say there arent dirty players out there but for the most part I’d say physical.

  49. jvillenole says: Sep 14, 2011 9:53 PM

Don’t chalk up Johnson’s week one performance to the holdout. The truth is that the Jags defense dominated.

  50. bluejaysfan101 says: Sep 14, 2011 11:02 PM

CJ is not at all whining. The reporter said that many people believed the Ravens D were intent on taking him out of the game and asked him for his thoughts. CJ responds the play I got hurt was CLEAN. This is classic PFT taking player quotes out of context. Also during that game it was obvious to everyone watching they had no answer for CJ and were taking cheap shots. I even remember a pile up when Ed Reed takes CJ and tries to pretzel his back AFTER the whistle. Everyone on here needs to smarten up and realize this story is completely insignificant and is not CJ calling out a dirty ravens D.

  51. granadafan says: Sep 14, 2011 11:02 PM

Uh oh. Johnson can’t throw a big accusation like that without specifics and then try to “let it go”. That’s weak sauce and cowardly. He just created some huge bulletin board material with the Ravens. Ray Lewis is so mad he’s getting his posse ready to shank someone.

  52. pftequalsgreatjournalism says: Sep 14, 2011 11:10 PM

    This is news?

The Ravens play to the edge of the rules and try to hurt every opposing player that they can…

I wouldn’t have it any other way and I wish my Cowgirls had some of that attitude!

  53. bmorethansteel says: Sep 15, 2011 12:04 AM

Deebo92 hit the nail on the head. Are you more physical? If not, go play soccer (Futbol)! Stop crying! I thought fans wanted this game to be smash-mouth. Now you have a commissioner who wants to take that away yet everyone complains about the kickoffs because they want to see more action. I’m confused. Want cake and eat it too? The Ravens and Steelers play real football!!! Every other team just try’s to finesse their game! That’s lame. AFC NORTH runs this league the way Lombardi would still want it to be played. CJ should get a restraining order on the Ravens Because they’re coming after him again. You stop prime players to win games and that’s what it’s about. Wining games! Period!

  54. jlv3gem says: Sep 15, 2011 12:04 AM

    @ bossplayer213;

I’d be a humble Chris Johnson too if I guaranteed over 2,000 yards and put up a mere 1,364.

  55. shaggytoodle says: Sep 15, 2011 12:06 AM

worry more about making the playoffs this year, than what the Ravens did a few seasons ago.

  56. jlv3gem says: Sep 15, 2011 12:09 AM

Troy Polamalu is by far one of the best players in the game as well as one of the dirtiest.

    That being said; Steelers suck.

  57. walkedintoabar says: Sep 15, 2011 1:11 AM

    apparently “dirty” means “hard-hitting”

also, any steelers fan calling the Ravens dirty is just ridiculous. It was the Steelers who couldn’t get anything done during gameplay and had to start fighting after the whistle in an attempt to do some damage lol FOOLS

Did you not see Troy try to tear Rice’s leg off? Yeah I guess that wasn’t dirty.

  59. watermelon1 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:47 AM

Did anyone actually watch the game that this happened in?

Chris Johnson was trying to stay up, fighting for yards… so Ed Reed kept trying to bring him down. If you don’t want to get bent backwards awkwardly then if you might want to go down if a guy has you wrapped up. Otherwise… the guy is going to twist and turn you to bring you all the way down… OR one of his teammates is going to run in and finish off the play.

Of course, since Johnson wasn’t down by contact, but was clearly wrapped up and not really making any forward progress… the officials could have EASILY stopped the play.

Oh, and this is the same game where Cortland Finnegan was taking cheap shots at Derrick Mason AFTER the whistle on every single play(because Derrick Mason had a known shoulder injury from previous week).

  60. moronhater16 says: Sep 15, 2011 5:00 AM

Sounds like someone is riding on the WAAAMBULANCE! If Brain dead CJ didnt have any carry over from that game he wouldnt be talking about ut years later. DONT BE SCUURED!!

  61. ham1 says: Sep 15, 2011 7:03 AM

Ravens do play lights out football and players do get injured. This is guy is whining sure. But, in all fairness, when a Raven gets injured, or the coach feels slighted, they are the biggest crybabies in the AFC. Its all you hear about for weeks, blah blah blah blah, Hines Ward tried to hurt me, Hines Ward is a dirty palyer….The door swings both ways.

  62. robcypher says: Sep 15, 2011 8:23 AM

Ravens are super cheapshot artists. They kept chopblocking all the O and D-line players during the Steelers game, and Ray Lewis likes to stab people in crowded areas when nobody’s looking. Dirty players.

When the Steelers win the AFC North division this year I want to see what the haters say then.
