Classless Jaguars fan mocks Steve McNair

mcnair AP

One Jaguars fan celebrated the start of the NFL season by mocking deceased former Titans quarterback Steve McNair.

Clay Travis of OutKicktheCoverage.com passed along a photo of one Jaguars fan that dressed up a skeleton with a torn-up and bloody Steve McNair jersey.  The skeleton was proudly displayed outside his car while tailgating before the game.

We know one fan shouldn’t provide a negative slant on an entire fanbase, but this is so out of bounds and pathetic it still merits attention. Perhaps the Jaguars could figure out who did it, and take away their season tickets if they have any.

PFT regulars will remember that an amusement park in Cincinnati intended to include McNair’s jersey and “skeleton” as part of a Halloween display a few years ago.  It’s ridiculous that such a similar story happened again.

I wouldn’t do something like this, but those about to tear this guy apart need to look back at the article from the article about the marine and the Cowboys fan with the taser. Freedom of Speach my friends.

This political correct crap has to stop.

Another hit piece on the Jags. One “fan” now represents the entire city. Keep it coming NBC. This team is not leaving, so be still your LA-loving hearts.

  10. nflofficeadmin says: Sep 14, 2011 10:24 AM

Does this guy always do the same thing and switch jerseys of opposing teams week to week? This doesn’t sound like an attack on Mcnair as much as a fan not thinking that some people would be offended given the way Mcnair died.

  11. joemontanawasthegreatest says: Sep 14, 2011 10:24 AM

Was it done purposely or did they just buy an old jersey not realizing who it was? Idiots either way, but maybe a different classification of idiot.

As a Jags fan, I completely understand the hatred for the Titans (our only real rival) but damn… that’s just low.

Couldn’t he of made a Chris Johnson jersey with bootmarks all over it, some bloody gold teeth and some torn dollar bills stapled to it?

Please keep this ideal in mind when reporting on the small but vocal minority of Broncos fans who chant for Tebow to enter the game.

Sometimes it’s a teams logo on a tshirt but anyway She’s an older lady and i’m pretty sure that jersey could have been any Jersey that was on sale at the time of purchase. Heck I didn’t even remember about that McNair death till I saw this post. Classic use of people pulling any negativity they can towards the jags fans… Guess the 49er fans are angels…

  20. CKL says: Sep 14, 2011 10:30 AM

I remember back in the day seeing fans who had “voodoo doll” type things with Cowboys QBs’ jerseys, even one with a noose. Meh.

I wouldn’t have done this, but remember McNair was also a guy who screwed around on his wife and drove around drunk. We’re not talking about a good human being here.

Definitely classless, but you’re suggesting the Jags take away the guy’s season tickets for an act like this? That’s a bit of an overreaction, something the guy probably wanted. Take a chill pill Rosenthall. There’s a hundred stories today worth writing over this one.

  32. charlesu2 says: Sep 14, 2011 10:44 AM

“Perhaps the Jaguars could figure out who did it, and take away their season tickets if they have any.”

I wasn’t aware that they had any season ticket holders, maybe they should find who did this and force them to BUY season tickets, that may be more painful.

  33. bearsrulepackdrool says: Sep 14, 2011 10:45 AM

Wow good job Jags fans. I wonder if they’ll still be doing that in L.A.

  34. The Prophet says: Sep 14, 2011 10:45 AM

For some of u making excuses as if they didn’t know who McNair was, first of all, the jersey had bullet holes in it. Secondly I doubt you could even find a McNair jersey other than at a classic type store, and if you wanted a cheap Titan jersey you would more likely buy a Vince Young shirt.

This is what it is folks, and stop trying to weasel this moron out.

If the NFL ever needed more reason to get the Jags in LA add this to the list…

  35. nolahxc says: Sep 14, 2011 10:45 AM

  36. sakatak says: Sep 14, 2011 10:46 AM

  37. swellbuilt says: Sep 14, 2011 10:46 AM

Classless? No doubt. What’s worse is writing a story about it (Clay Travis) and then re-writing a story about it (Gregg Rosenthal). Look, only a handful of tailgaters were subjected to it and that’s where it should have stayed. You guys are writing about it to generate hits and ad revenue. Now that’s classless.

  38. hairpie says: Sep 14, 2011 10:47 AM

Why give the clown the attention he’s so desperate for. I wouldnt even call it “classless”… its just something a little kid would do. Lets also remember that McNair had a wife and kids….. and he was found dead in an apartment with his girlfriend.

  39. zoxitic says: Sep 14, 2011 10:49 AM

  40. pencepost says: Sep 14, 2011 10:50 AM

You know how TV coverage cuts to aerial shots whenever some idiot runs across the field, since they don’t want to give such fans the attention they’re seeking and thus encouraging this behavior?

Perhaps the same practice should have applied here. Why even give such a classless act a headline?

  41. peytonsneck says: Sep 14, 2011 10:51 AM

  44. Steeler's Will says: Sep 14, 2011 11:09 AM

Classless, unfortunately sports pride can bring out the worst in some folks. To imply that this douche represents all Jaguars fans is idiotic, even if you are just talking trash.

  45. steeelfann says: Sep 14, 2011 11:11 AM

I am wondering, on a side note, if any of the alphabet networks reported how classy McNair was running around with young women while his wife was at home raising the boys, or why he was taking a young girl to an exotic vacation spot while his wife was at home doing her job being a parent.

Bet that part was glossed over.

Nope, classless act in Jacksonville by fan. But classless lifestyle by the great Mr. McNair. Just think, if he led the right lifestyle, he would be there right now for his boys. And his wife.

You reap what you sow I think it was written some place.

  46. mechajaguar says: Sep 14, 2011 11:11 AM

Oh please, it was probably the cheapest stock jersey he could find. It’s no secret that we Jaguar fans hate the Titans, but this kinda stuff is found in stadiums all around the NFL Heck, I’m sure there’s probably 20 things just as grotesque at Raiders games. Move along people, nothing to see here.

As a Jaguars fan, this is completely tasteless.
The Jaguars have plenty of fans with real class. Visit the city and you will see.

Jacksonville got ripped during the superbowl for lack of strip clubs. The sports writers hiding from their wives didn’t have enough “fun”.

Jax is a great place to live. Having visited most of the cities in the North with NFL teams I can say it is much better.

As for the Titans, it’s not the same without Jeff Fisher on the sideline. The new team is pathetic. That being said, I will be surprised if the Jags get to 7-9 this year. Start the rookie already!

  50. groomerofthestool says: Sep 14, 2011 11:16 AM

    What’s the uproar all about?

  55. moswesley says: Sep 14, 2011 11:21 AM

Not a jags or titans fan, but the PFT crew had too much coffee this morning. Who ever said it’s hard to get a McNair jersey is wrong, or just trolling for thumbs down. The Titans have only been around 11-12 years. There are more old McNair jersey’s out there than every other titan combined. There are no bullet holes in the jersey, those are claw marks. Was it an ignorant move to make? yes. However, McNair has not be deified to level of many other great players who have passed on because of the nature and circumstances surrounding his death. This isn’t Pat Tillman’s jersey.

Did you see how ridiculous the pictures are to generate this fake outrage? I didnt realize that McNair was clawed to death.

There’s no bullet holes in the jersey. And less you modern day Sherlock Holmes forgot, our mascot is a Jaguar. It doesnt take a degree in Zoology to realize they have claws.

Pathetic “reporting”. Throwing up a link to some minor league blog and running around with hurt V’s.

Here’s a story to go with Rosenthal. I heard that mascots will *actually* tackle a person dressed up as an opposing player. And they laugh and make funny. The outrage!

Jaguars are Jacksonville’s team. No amount of hit pieces will change that. But I enjoy NBC’s desperation.

  59. halo81 says: Sep 14, 2011 11:34 AM

Track the person down? It’s the Jaguars…

They’ve got what; 13 season ticket holders? I’m sure the owner knows them all on a first name basis.

I’m surprised they even call it tailgating. Don’t they just park at a local deli or something?

  60. goatcheez says: Sep 14, 2011 11:35 AM

  68. topweasel says: Sep 14, 2011 11:59 AM

Lions fan here.. But looking at the picture it looks like the jersey has been attacked by an animal attack not a gun shot.

Also this fan apparently takes that skeleton to every game. So I am sure he buys a jersey for teams that he doesn’t already have, but really are we so picky and offended that we should demand that he buys a new jersey for the titans even though he has probably been using that for several years considering they play in his division.

  69. 4evrnyt says: Sep 14, 2011 12:07 PM

The problem here is the choice in jerseys.

It’s more then OK to create an effigy of the team you are playing and beat the crap out of or burn it or various other things but to display the jersey of a murdered player is beyond the lines of good taste or any taste for that matter.

This was a clear attempt to not just anger Titans fans but to enrage them, who wouldn’t have been? When you have a personality that is trying to bring out such feelings then that personality needs an adjustment. Be it either by ass kicking or someone going up and ripping that jersey off the skeleton.

Again, this person made no attempt to hold back when it came to their desire to upset people so why shouldn’t the favor be returned in full. Beat the crap out of them and then see how funny they think it is.

  70. briang123 says: Sep 14, 2011 12:12 PM

This kinda stuff happens at every single game, every single sunday. I have no doubt that skeleton will be a bloody Mark Sanchez this Sunday. More likely than not, the fan just wasn’t aware of what she had done. Either way, reporting the action of one dumbass fan is lazy, yellow, slanted and unfair journalism. You’re clearly trying to up your pageviews. This isn’t news, and you should be ashamed.

Yup. I thought the exact same thing. I’ve been to one game there and this lady had that same setup but with a different jersey. BlackSportsOnline is an openly racist organization that is just trying to stir things up, just like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, the Black Panthers, the NAACP and Stormfront. Frankly, I’m shocked PFT is giving them the light of day. That lady has probably had that same McNair jersey for more than a decade.

Our country would be a better place if we could get rid of all of these racist organizations and policies. All they do is spawn more racism and hate.

But of course, we would have expected that from Cincy…

Typical jets fans up there, an idiot, worried about the ravens crushing “mini ravens” into the ground in week four. Btw ben should hang himself, he’s a waste of space and a terrible man. McNair was a great guy with a sweet tooth, he was a great father, player, friend, just lacked in the husband department. I doubt this was to mean any harm but you should be smarter then that, and secondly this shouldn’t be a story, this is not news. It’s week 2 now, there has gotta be more to talk about. I am already regretting that ben line btw, forgive me football fans. R.I.P. Stevie Mc, thanks for the 13-3 season, you were the man

The more I look at those pictures the more it looks like cat scratches on the shirt. The person who did it probably isn’t football-savvy enough to realize the jersey was that of a dead guy.

It’s tasteless and someone should have told him/her to pull it down. But I don’t think it’s worth insulting the 1 million citizens of Jacksonville or the 62,000 who were at the game.

  101. killbuck0936 says: Sep 14, 2011 1:31 PM

Wow I dont know this guy but I think its clear the fan didnt go out of his way to buy a mcnair jersey. It looks like he has had it a while and I dont think mcnair was clawed to death by a Jaguar which the picture is clearly portraying. He was shot to death not clawed. Its not classless, its a guy who doesnt want to buy another titans jersey to hang it on a skeleton all tore up. Moreover look at the claw marks not gun shots. It would have been classless if they had another skeleton holding a gun pointed at him.

  102. metalhead65 says: Sep 14, 2011 1:50 PM

way to go pft for giving this loser all the pub he was looking for. you say you do not want to paint all jags fans as the same then give this guy his 15 min. and make all their fans look bad. great so you did not give his name but since he was the only one dressed like that you didn’t need to. really who needed to read about this? how is this news in any way?tasteless stuff like this does not need to be brought to any body’s attention. one random idiot seeking attention and you give it to him. yea that is really going to stop other people from doing this kind of crap.

  103. favreforever says: Sep 14, 2011 2:01 PM

“As you can see, Mr. Watson, the fake skeleton wearing the Steve McNair jersey appears to have been clawed by a large beast of prey. A Jaguar perhaps? Whereas the real Steve McNair, as we all know, was shot full of more bullet holes than an abandoned Cadillac at the end of a dirt road. Clearly no connection between the two.”.

Everyone keeps “assuming” that this was a very insensitive “guy” that put this skeleton up…when in fact it is a LADY fan! She does this for every game. Buys a cheap jersey to shred (like a Jaguar shredded it) duh! I can assure you that she never meant any harm or insensitivity in the situation other than it being just that THE OTHER TEAM’S JERSEY! Give her a break, she never meant any harm and probably doesn’t even know who Steve McNair is for that matter!

  107. jeffperk says: Sep 14, 2011 4:00 PM

The brilliant legcy of Paul Taglibue lives on!!! Yes, putting the NFL in Jacksonville, such a brilliant idea. Cover up seats so you can lift blackouts, worst city evr for Super Bowl, & mocking a former NFL Player who was murdered. Why does Taglibue’s name come up for the NFL Hall of Fame every year. A legacy of failure!!

you mean the Steve McNair that was locked out of the Titans building and dumped on to Ravens.

The Steve McNair who was the greatest Oilers/Titans qb in history and has yet had any honor whatsoever or had his number retired

Next time you’re in Nashville I’d be happy to point out where his name is in the Oilers/Titans Ring of Honor, which is a pretty select group. Apparently you’re only three years late in getting the news he was inducted. (It was NOT a posthumous honor.)

Officially retired numbers are hard to come by (only six in franchise history) and are basically all Hall of Famers… but I’ve never seen #9 assigned to anyone since McNair left.

McNair maintained a great relationship with this city and team even after he went to the Ravens (for a pretty big signing bonus on a multiyear deal, vs. the 1-yr offer the Titans could afford) and his kids remained fixtures around the team even after he died.

He — and his family — deserve more respect than that classless fan showed.

NFLJunkie says:…his family — deserve more respect than that classless fan showed.

Yes they did deserve more respect, especially from Steve McNair himself.

Spare me the after-school special. Papa was a rolling stone. It’s amazing you are so bent out of shape over a clawed jersey yet totally minimize McNair’s off-field behavior that led to his death.

    RIP Air McNair

despite his failings as a person. he was one of my favorite players to watch.

ps. when was the last time any of the writers on this site watched a game from somewhere other than a press box, behind a desk, or a couch?
it gets real in there sometimes.

  112. gojev93 says: Sep 14, 2011 6:13 PM

I’m glad I know the whole story unlike most of the people leaving comments here…

It was an old woman who every game buys the cheapest jersey she can find of the team the Jags are playing.

She shreds the jersey and puts it on a skeleton EVERY single game. She had no idea the jersey she bought was someone who has died.

    Ignorant? Maybe. Classless? No.

  114. emma333 says: Sep 14, 2011 6:41 PM

Shame on all the media outlets reporting this as though it were not only a story, but once again a “classless” swipe at Jaguars fans. An elderly lady made a misstep using a McNair Jersey in her little display. It is so obvious when you see the claw marks. Also, there seems to be a poster board on the back covering the name. I’m sure this would be a raw nerve with Titans fans, but most casual Jags fans would not be aware of #9. Pretty sure no harm was meant, but once again Jaguars, fans , city are portrayed in a very negative ugly light.

    I own a t-shirt that says:

    Does that make me classless?

Nice to know you don’t believe in that glass houses and throwing stones stuff, and that you think having an affair means you had it coming if you get murdered.

I’m not bent out of shape so much as amazed that any grown-up would think it was funny to go around dressed like that, under the circumstances.

    Any

NFLJunkie says: as amazed that any grown-up would think it was funny to go around dressed like that

Did you even look at the picture? If you did, you would know it wasnt a grown-up “dressed like that” but a Halloween skeleton – truly campy stuff. It had absolutely nothing to do with his death, unless his mistress was a Jaguar.

And you are an absolute homer if you think Steve McNair didnt share some responsibility in his death.

At the very least, dont lecture about respecting his family when he obviously did not.

Shouldn’t be too hard to figure out who it was, there are only 20-30 fans tailgating before a Jaguars game anyway, right?

  121. hboc01 says: Sep 15, 2011 2:22 AM

First of all, he was shot by his mistress, let’s not make him out to be a fallen veteran. Secondly, we hate you guys…do you think it showed class when you beat us in the AFC championship game and your coach came out and called Alltel your second home stadium. I feel for McNair’s wife and kids, I can’t find the time of inclination to feel for him.
