I don't have much sympathy for McAlister -- he's a grown-up who made his own (bad) decisions. I also don't have the mockery or contempt for him that others seem to have.

He made bad financial decisions. He wasted a lot of money. So does virtually every lottery winner. So do millions of other people making far less. The only reason a lot of folks haven't wasted $40 million is because they don't a talent that pays that much.

This isn't an "athletes these days..." story. It's a story about human nature. Pro athletes are just as human as the rest of us.

I have the feeling this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of ex pro football players who once were making the big bucks are now going broke.
Recently there have been stories of SB winners now having to sell they're rings.
They should be more responsible with their money if they don't want to become broke later on.
It really does pay off to live frugally.

"Everybody who is complaining about his $11,000 a month child support should realize this…although excessive to some, this guy signed a 7 year-55 million dollar contract…in which he played 5 years of. He probably made $40 million of it. All he had to do was put $1.2 million into a bank account and with interest compounded monthly he would have paid for the child and the childs college and then some. He made 40 million in 5 years and was only being asked to pay 3% of that to his child over 18 years. I know alot more percentage wise of my salary goes to my children. What an Idiot this guy is!!!!!"

-----------------------------------------

Funny, all your "math" neglected taxes, agent fees, and of course, the child support he is supposed to be paying. He likely made about half of that $40 million, which is still a lot of money, but it's not as much as you make it out to be.

And $1.2 million in the bank should take care of his kid at that rate? Seriously? $11k a month is $132k a year. $132k is 13.2% of a $1 million. What savings account do you know of with a return of %13.2%? $1.2 million in the bank would last just over 9 years with that kind of payout in child support, and you would gain maybe an extra year to year and a half with interest. And $1.2 million is more than 3% of his gross income. And that is just CHILD SUPPORT, it does not cover the money that he actually pays out of pocket for his kids while they are in his custody.

Personally, I do not support Child Support the way it is today. I do believe that the parents should take financial responsibility for their children, but I do not beleive that either parent should have to just hand over money to the other and hope that it is used for their children. How about having him pay for insurance, all of the kids' education expenses and making sure the kids have clothes and other stuff like that. No way his ex-wife should be getting a check for $11,000 every month. If his ex is spending money on the kids that she thinks he should be spending, she should produce receipts.

His (mis-)management of his money is completely irrelevant. This article is about him asking for his child support to be lowered. In my opinion, it should never have been so high to begin with. His kids don't cost more money to raise just because he makes more money. They don't eat $11,000 worth of food. Their school activities do not cost $11,000. Yeah, he makes enough money to spoil his kids, but that should be decided by him, not the courts. And, giving $11,000 to his ex-wife does not necessarily mean that the money is being spent on the kids. As far as I am concerned, if he did actually pay $11,000 a month for the last 7 years, if he only has one or two kids he is supporting, he shouldn't have to pay another dime in child support (but he should obviously still pay for stuff while his kids are in his custody).

What an idiot. Absolute retard. Borderline at least.

How does someone with that much talent end up being such a joke of himself? Can't get a job? Please - coach a camp, coach on a team, work at WalMart - whatever.

Anyone over 30 who STILL lives with their parents is a total failure at life.

Anyone who signed a $55 MM deal and is over 30 and living with their parents = biggest POS ever.

I wonder what he is doing with his college degree?

The real story here is the family court system within the United States, and it's abuse and exploitation of a father's reproductive and parenting rights.

McAlister, regardless of his NFL team affiliation, regardless of his alleged 'party habits,' has received the same treatment that numerous American fathers receive in family court.

What may happen:
- It'll most likely be months before he gets a court date;
- The judge may or may not rule from the bench;
- McAlister may get locked up prior to the court date for failure to pay child support.

Ridiculous.

$11,000 a month?!? For those of you who stated he should get a job, what job pays $11,000 a month? Oh, NFL player, or course.

Even if McAlister had invested wisely, spent less, etc., as soon as his career was over he should have petitioned to reduce his child support obligations, however, half of the time the court believes that if you've made that type of income, then you can always make that type of income, regardless of diminished skill set, loss of job, recession, or the Commander in Chief is a democrat.

What this really is a story of is the grotesque nature of family law, the U.S. family court system, and a father's parenting and reproductive rights being abused.

So, not only did he knock up who knows how many chicks, and squander tens of millions of dollars (rendering him unable to pay the child support).....but also, during his tenure in the NFL, he apparently made NO friends that can help him out financially during this time???
CMAC is smarter than nearly all who posted here. Only 2 or 3 people have recognized that THIS IS A RUSE (and a very well played ruse at that).

CMAC ain't broke. His money is well hidden. He's playing the game correctly so the judge will lower his child support.

Once the judge hooks him up, he won't be living with his parents anymore. He isn't broke now and as soon as the coast is clear, he'll be back to livin' large again.

So you mean to tell me a guy who was a pretty darn good player, who's in his mid-30's can't start a coaching career at a High School or Small College and work his way up from there?

Or heck, even get a TV job, it's not like he has to speak well (Hi Emmitt & Eric Dickerson).

To a certain extent, I can understand the financial irresponsibility of some of these players. Many of them are handed millions of dollars at a very young age. What I don't understand is how can you spend that kind of money and have so little to show for it that you can't even pawn or sell something to make ends meet. At the bare minimum, I'd have a home and a few cars paid off. And it would be at this point where my jewelry and super high-end electronics becomes very expendable.

The first stop that these players should make after signing their multi-million dollar contract is to the urologist to have a vasectomy.

Heck why not sign the contract on the doctor's table, just to make sure there are no accidents.

Why would you put your self in position to have to pay 11k a month this is ridiculous.
