Even the Eagles recommend running on the Eagles

Casey Matthews, Steven Jackson, Brandon Gibson AP

Throughout training camp, Philadelphia’s two biggest weaknesses appeared to be the offensive line and the linebacker group.

Both problem areas showed up against the Rams in Week One.  The rest of the Eagles team, however, played so well that it didn’t matter.

Heading into Atlanta this Sunday night, the Eagles know they have to improve against the run. They gave up 104 yards in the first quarter to Steven Jackson and Cadillac Williams.  The Rams gained 154 for the game, which would have risen higher if St. Louis wasn’t playing catch up in the second half.

Look for the Falcons to run Michael Turner, Jason Snelling, and Jacquizz Rodgers plenty on Sunday. Heck, even the Eagles linebackers recommend it.

“I would probably run at our linebackers if I was them,” Eagles linebacker Jamar Chaney said Wednesday to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Rams seemed to target starting middle linebacker Casey Matthews with good results. Philly’s defensive line approach can be susceptible to runs up the middle.  Matthews knows he’s facing a running back that can be tough to take down.

“[Turner's] got thick legs, and he knows how to use them. We just need to gang-tackle and everyone rally to the ball,” Matthews said.

Philadelphia has the talent to cover up their weaknesses.  But we fully expect the Falcons to try to hammer at the Eagles rush defense in the Georgia Dome, where Atlanta’s offensive plays much better than on the road.

Casey to his brother Clay..”Clay how do i become as good as you are and as strong?”

Clay: “take steroids, helps a ton.”

You’ll see Casey’s arms looking 2 times bigger next year then they did his rookie year.

If his last name wasn’t Matthews, he would be on the practice squad and not even starting. But then again Reid, puts no value on the LB’s.

I think Chaney wants his job in the middle back just like every fan and probably 3/4 of the team. Best case scenario the Eagles win will while giving up 300 rushing yards. Reid/Castillo, what do you see in Casey Matthews at MLB that no one else does???

I hope you’re right. Without some sort of PED’s Casey is falling behind 90% of the linebackers in the NFL…

Atleast they can admit it. I wouldn’t joke about it though, being that this could severely hold the birds back from coming out of the NFC. Get it fixed now, Andy.

After 1 game with no OTAs and a shorten training camp. Come on now you guys have to be joking right. Give the kid a chance before you write him off.

Also this is the eagles game plan. Get an early lead and force the opponent to throw the ball against an excellent pass rush and excellent DB’s. Kind of hard to keep running the ball when your down late in the game. Maybe You guys will one day realize thats why the eagles have small fast and athletic cover LBs.

When are the birds going to realize Casey Matthews is NOT ready. He is the weak link, we need someone in there DESPERATELY that can at least be a short term band-aid to an obviously gushing wound. Are there ANY decent LB’s out there in Free Agency? Or even put Chaney back in the middle, Akeem and Fokou outside…heck Brian Rolle would suffice. AHHHHH, so frustrating!

  14. ajknox88 says: Sep 15, 2011 2:01 PM

Casey wasn’t that impressive at Oregon to begin with. He was good but not outstanding. I don’t know why people would think it would mean he’d be great in the NFL immediately. He is a rookie, I’m sure he’ll get faster and stronger.

  15. mykelane says: Sep 15, 2011 2:02 PM

as a Eagles fan, I’m still trying to figure out how this same defense shut down the falcons running game last year.. here’s a idea for Juan..put in last year’s game tape and do that.

  16. sonvar says: Sep 15, 2011 2:02 PM

If Atlanta keeps the game close and can run the ball late I see this being an issue. But give Casey some time I expect he’ll do better with time. Hopefully without PEDs

  17. freedomispopular says: Sep 15, 2011 2:08 PM

The nice thing about having the best cornerback tandem (IMO) in the league is that you can keep 8 men in the box and still have good coverage on the outside.

  18. packerrube13 says: Sep 15, 2011 2:13 PM

Why didn’t/don’t they just sign Totupu? Lofa is hanging around isn’t he?

  19. phillyfan4ever says: Sep 15, 2011 2:13 PM

The eagles know this is a weakness, however with an explosive offense who scores early and often, teams can’t just run the ball, because they are always playing from behind so BAM!

  20. phillyisinvading says: Sep 15, 2011 2:14 PM

Running the ball only helps if the other team doesnt score quickly.

When the eagles get up by 2 or 3 TDs… they won’t be running anymore if they want to have a shot at winning the game.

Mike Vick is going to have a field day.

  21. b7p19 says: Sep 15, 2011 2:20 PM

    @jnks10 –

You missunderstood me. I was referring to the fact that 90% of LB’s in the NFL are taking PED’s, therefore if Casey isn’t he is falling behind.

I honestly think Casey will be OK. Give him time, Matt McCoy is still contributing in the NFL, so there is no reason Casey can’t.

  23. pmac9102 says: Sep 15, 2011 2:23 PM

Eagles run d has been a problem for years. It’s business as usual at the novacare complex. With the corners they have, they might as well put 8 in the box.

  24. snakeplizkn says: Sep 15, 2011 2:24 PM

Do you think MAYBE Chaney was taking the position that it would not make sense for teams to target the best secondary in the NFL, but instead it makes sens to run by default…maybe… do ya think?

I don’t think anyone is arguing that run defense is tought at this point, but c’mon with this misquoting sillyness.

  25. lbdpatch says: Sep 15, 2011 2:32 PM

Cmon last year EAGLES beat Atlanta easily. Last week the Falcons got crushed by the Bears and the EAGLES are a much better team then the Bears. It’s only week two of a very short off season. The Eagles will only get better as the season moves forward. Eagles crush falcons this weekend.

  26. lbijake says: Sep 15, 2011 2:37 PM

This week will be a good test for Juan as a DC. I hope he proves up to the task.

  27. cursivel says: Sep 15, 2011 2:43 PM

Look everybody lay off Casey Matthews. First off, he’s a rookie. Rookies have growing pains, especially rookies who didn’t have a full offseason. Casey and the run defense will get better each week. The run defense is an issue yes, but the Eagles have an obvious advantage over the Falcons defense. The Falcons have to worry about giving up running yards to the Eagles this week seeing how they won’t have their starting DT’s in the middle of the line. Plus the recievers are better than their secondary when healthy, but they’re beat up back there too. Vick’s gonna go ham. 38-17 Philly.

  28. We'reFineThere says: Sep 15, 2011 2:46 PM

pmac, I disagree and think the Eagles run D has not been that bad in recent years.

It was atrocious in the Post-Superbowl-Only-Garcia-Made-the-Playoffs era of 05-07, but in the past few years it’s been pretty good.

The 2011 Run D and TE coverage since Hall of Famer Jermaine Wiggins is a different story though.

  30. laeaglefan says: Sep 15, 2011 2:50 PM

For the life of me I don’t understand why the Eagles let Stewart Bradley walk. Watching Casey Matthews get run over time after time is eventually going to get him killed out there and Andy Reid will HAVE to make a change…even though he may not have any better options. If the Falcons run over the Eagles for 200+ yards AND win the game (both likely to happen), then MAYBE Andy will make some adjustments.

Haha – so let me get this right… the Eagles “game plan” is to get an early lead? What an awesome plan! Why don’t more teams use this? Just go out there and get an early lead. This is much better than the “fall behind early, come back late” game plan. Wow – you should have a head coaching gig in no time with that kind of plan.

  32. fthrvic says: Sep 15, 2011 2:52 PM

And offensive coordinators will game plant to run right at DRC when/if he ever gets on the field because he’s afraid to make contact/tackle.

  33. eaglesw00t says: Sep 15, 2011 2:56 PM

Ive been an Eagles fan for 30+ years now, and I am completely embarrased by our LB corps. I know they dont place much emphasis on the position, but sticking a couple of young kids in there where you want to isnt going to win you a SB.

If we had a decent MIKE, our team would be completely different.

I firmly believe in giving Matthews time to grow and learn before saying anything bad about him…but honestly, he looked like a fart in the wind out there last week. He got swallowed on every single run. Give us 2002 Trotter on this team, and I believe we win the big one this year.

  34. bleedgreen11 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:00 PM

IMO we have to worry about the pass just as much as the run. If St. Louis didn’t drop all those balls last week it would have been a MUCH closer game and it really could have gone either way then.

Don’t expect Roddy White, Gonzalez, or Julio Jones to drop nearly as much balls as the Rams did, and Matty Ice is electric at home, hopefully some of his fire gets stolen by Vicks supporters in the crowd, but cannot hope for that.

Mike Turner is definitely no Steven Jackson, but he will be hard to take down IMO, this is a going to be a good test for the birds.

  35. b7p19 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:10 PM

You people are crazy. The Eagles are a good team. All this doom and gloom. “Oh my God, we didn’t beat the Rams by more than 18 points on the road in the first game of the season!!!” PANIC! “What if they would have played perfect football against us?! We could have lost!!”

    Ugh.

  36. sasquash20 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:14 PM

C.Mathews is a rookie who is changing positions. He had no off season, no OTAs, no mini camps, no weight training plan to help adjust to MLB. It will take time. He looks like a rookie. Please stop with the S.Bradley talk. He was so overrated. I think that Mathews will end up being a solid player, but right now hes out of position and learning. You have to be patient. I do wish someone was grooming the kid, but that wasn’t the direction they went. If he comes out next season and isn’t 15-20 pounds heavier (muscle) and still can’t shed blockers I will dog him.

  37. umbra7 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:21 PM

I’m a Eagle fan. This is going to be a good game. If the Falcons were smart, they would run at the MLB. Because Passing against the Eagles is a lot harder. They need to run their game plan through Mike Turner. If they come out passing with Matt Ryan they will lose. They’ll foolishly be playing into the Eagles biggest defensive strengths…the Pass Rush and the Secondary (Corners) and Fast covering LB’s (Chaney, Rolle, etc).

So Running and then passing of the Play Action is the best beat.

Defensively, if they are stupid and listen to the idiot ‘talking heads’ and Blitz Vick. They will lose. The Eagles put up 404 yards and scored 24 points. So the ‘Blitz’ him is over stated. It’s no different then any QB, only that Vick can break you back if you miss. They need to pick and choose the right time to blitz.

Their best friend is Andy Reid and Co. not using McCoy. If they come out and focus on Vick, you will end up with huge runs from McCoy on Running plays. Just watch the running plays when McCoy breaks into the second level. You will always see a defense fixated on Vick.

  38. umbra7 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:23 PM

I actually think that Brian Rolle should get a shot. Dude is a gamer…small, but very powerful and fast. A play maker. If Matthews doesn’t hold up, they should move Chaney back to the MLB where he played great last year…and put Rolle in there.

  39. everybodyhitswoohoo says: Sep 15, 2011 3:41 PM

Just a quick note…the o-line was actually really solid after the first quarter. Peters was Peters, Herremans had a couple of hiccups but was otherwise fine, and Kelce was better than anyone realistically would’ve expected. From the sounds of things DeVan was the only one who had several rough spots, and even he made some real nice plays otherwise.

And Castillo made it sound like he’ll be playing Antonio Dixon more often next week, which is a good thing. He’s not much as far as a pass rusher but he’s a damn good run stuffing DT and definitely the best the Eagles have at that. This may be a week to load up for the run and take your chances with Asomugha/Samuel/DRC vs. Ryan/White/Jones.

  40. jakek2 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:42 PM

The Eagles should take pleasure in knowing that even after telling the whole league that their run defense is suspect, next week, Killdrive will still have Eli putting it up 40+ times.

  41. pigskinswag says: Sep 15, 2011 3:56 PM

You know what they say, honesty is the best policy.

  42. umbra7 says: Sep 15, 2011 3:59 PM

everybodyhitswoohoo, agreed totally. Dixon is a 322 pound run stuffer, who is good at it.

It’s going to be a good game. Reading PTF makes you think that the Eagles are a bad team, or the only team in the NFL with Flaws. The only thing flawed is that type of reporting.

  43. fresno500 says: Sep 15, 2011 4:06 PM

  44. drbob117 says: Sep 15, 2011 4:16 PM

If the Eagles were a bad offensive team , this strategy might work. But the Eagles scored something like 28 points per game last year and scored 31 in the first game this year. It would be tough to make up all those points on the ground.

I said this during camp. nice kid but, Casey Mathews is the worst MLB in all pro football. He flat out stinks. Watch him and not the ball. Confused, slow backs run right thru him and around him. I can’t believe Andy’s choice at this position. I hope I’m wrong but Casey couldn”t stop a snow man. H O R R I B L E

  47. teal379 says: Sep 15, 2011 4:31 PM

Then again – if a team can and does run against the Eagles – that sorta controls the clock which also sorta means Vick/Offense doesn’t have time to “get a lead early” and all an opposing team has to do is get a few stops on D and run the ball to control the clock – there’s your weakness.

  48. Foresight2011 says: Sep 15, 2011 4:54 PM

Falcons could run the ball with effectiveness against the Eagles if they didn’t sell their souls to try to become a poor man’s version of the Green Bay Packers offense.

Not to mention that Falcons defense is going to get torched by the Eagles. Get ready to here the word SOFT a lot this year when mentioning that defense. They couldn’t bust a grape in a Welches food fight.

titletowngb12: LOL!! Couldn’t have said it better myself! Some of my fellow Eagles fans embarass me. Some still want the team to go out and sign an MLB free agent like they grow on trees. Who the hell is available? Think before you start making demands. You want Lofa Tatupu? Seriously? You must mean the 2005-2007 Lofa. The over-rated Stew Bradley who didn’t even play a snap for the Cards last week? The 2002 Trotter? LOL! Yup, definitely dreaming…

I’m all for Matthews development, but let’s cut to the chase. Put Chaney back at MLB where he did well last year, and much better than what Matthews is doing now. Put Fokou back at SLB. Start Rolle at WLB. He’ll eventually take over that job anyway. Rolle, not Fokou, plays nickel with Chaney.

As a Falcon fan living 5 miles from Philly, I can already tell you how this game is gonna go. Every time they play, the same thing always happens. Its always the Falcons run game vs the Eagles run D, and everyone gets all riled up blah blah blah. Its never even an issue. Face it Falcon fans, the Eagles have our number. Our rushing attack looked average last week, and our passing attack was horrible. No vertical passing game whatsoever. And we still have NO push rush, aside from the occasional Abraham. The real story here is the Eagle offense vs the Falcon D. And we looked like BALLS last week. Couldnt tackle or cover the Bears 3rd string WRs or contain Jay Cutler. And we are supposed to cover/tackle/contain Jackson, Maclin, McCoy and Vick? Get real, Eagles take this one easily.

  51. chescobirdfan says: Sep 16, 2011 3:07 PM

I predict that by mid season, Casey Matthews will be one of the better linebackers in the league. He will improve drastically. The Eagles can withstand these growing pains because they are very deep at the other positions. C’mon, if you are an Eagles fan you know you were excited when they drafted him.. You know, the Matthews’ bloodline and all of that. I have watched many tapes of him at Oregon and he WAS a beast.. Give him time.. We will be rewarded I am sure (well kinda sure)..
