Maclin: Don’t blame illness for quiet opener

AP

Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin didn’t play football for the entire offseason until two weeks ago because of a viral illness.

After catching only one pass in the season opener, Maclin says his time off was not a factor in his lack of production.

“That has nothing to do with it,” Maclin said via Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. “That’s just how the ball fell that day. That’s how it is sometimes.”

Maclin lost a lot of weight during the ordeal, but he’s back to playing shape. The Eagles can attack you in a variety of ways, so they don’t need Maclin 100% now.

It looked like DeSean Jackson was used a little more creatively than usual in his six-catch opening performance. Jason Avant is Jason Avant. Eagles coordinator Marty Morninweg says former Giant Steve Smith had his best practice as an Eagle Wednesday.

If Maclin can truly get all the way back, it’s a dangerous group.

  1. Trying to cover those 4 guys is like walking on the road to stop traffic on i95.

You might stop 1 lane, but the other 3 are speeding right past you.

Eventually your gunna get run over.

  2. Love his t-shirt. After seeing some of the bizarro uniforms Nike’s designed for NCAA teams, didn’t think I’d ever again love anything bearing that swoosh.

  3. Um for you dopes that know nothing about offense (such as the packers comment) this is the most dangerous wide receiver core in all of football. Signing Steve Smith just made every team in the NFL go …woops now we have to take away 3 of the the fastest guys in the NFL not just 2. Not 3 good receivers, 3 of the fastest best route running receivers in all of football. Oh and by the way Shady McCoy out of the backfield.

    Good Luck!

  4. One more thing came to mind, once Steve Smith learns the offense you will see 5 wide outs which takes care of the blitzing defenders. With a flick of the wrist the birds will score the most 40+ yard td’s this season.

  5. Jeremy Rice Maclin vs Jerry Rice
First two seasons in NFL the Real Rice had about 800 more yards at this point in his career !

  6. JIMMYTWOTIMES, Double digit TDs is a pretty good stat for a WR. And he only played 1 drive in that last game vs Dal, which would most likely have resulted in a 1,000 yard season as well. I get it, the Eagles have plenty of haters out there, but you guys talk out your arse most of the time. Maclin has proven that he’s a solid WR in the NFL, whether you think so or not.

  7. To all the eiggle fans its just a joke don’t you get it Iam just joking comparing JERRY RICE MACKLIN to the Real Rice its just a joke can’t you tell Iam just being sarcastic ??? Maclin will never be in the same stratosphere as Jerry Rice ! I agree with you Maclin is a solid receiver thats all, were are talking apples and oranges here. Rice,, the best of all time !

  8. JIMMYTWOTIMES, Yea Rice IS the greatest of all time. He’s WAAAAAY better than that slouch Hakeem Nicks. That dude cant even stay of the field. Whats next, torn achilles? Pulled hammy? When he’s healthy, he can be a good WR, but when is he healthy? Stokely must be the answer. . . .unless you’re talking to Kevin Gilbride lol

  9. THE LAST THING THE EAGLES HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IS MACKLIN. PLAYING WITH A 4TH STRING MLB IS MY CONCERN. THAT KID FLAT OUT STINKS. WAITING FOR HIM TO IMPROVE? HE WASN’T THAT GREAT IN COLLEGE. WASN’T HE A SIXTH ROUND PICK?
