The Giants are still talking about Steve Smith

New York Giants v Houston Texans Getty Images

It’s not just Giants fans that still seem obsessed and salty about losing receiver Steve Smith.  Even New York’s coaching staff is still talking about Smith in the wake of the team’s recent Brandon Stokley signing.

We had wanted all along Steve Smith back and that was the objective, that was the hope and the expectation,” Giants’ offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said via Newsday. “But when that didn’t happen, then we have two young guys that we think can do it [Victor Cruz and Jernal Jernigan].

“How fast will they be able to evolve into the experienced receiver that you need at that spot where everything is happening so quickly inside? The powers above me made that decision and we needed to add this additional receiver.”

Gilbride went on to say nice things about Stokley (again mentioning Smith) but it didn’t seem like Gilbride embraced the move.

Call us crazy, but Gilbride may be calling out the team’s front office for letting Smith get away. Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger tells us Gilbride brought up Smith’s unprompted in back-to-back weeks.

If nothing else, Gilbride seems to be distancing himself from the Stokley signing.

Did I miss something? How good is Steve Smith?

  3. ebenezergrymm says: Sep 15, 2011 6:01 PM

The Giants front office is kind of like… well they’re kind of like Eli Manning.

They threw Steve Smith to the wrong team.

  4. oriolesvsravens says: Sep 15, 2011 6:01 PM

Did I miss something? How good is Steve Smith? I liked the little I saw from Cruz albeit preseason action and Hixon is ok. But I thought Manningham was better than Smith.

  5. Foresight2011 says: Sep 15, 2011 6:02 PM

I am pretty sure Gilbride is not helping the morale of his offense if he keeps mentioning how much he misses the Other Steve Smith. When he comes out and complains and whines, he is not showing a lot of faith in his guys. Eventually you have to work with what you got and move on.

Hmm maybe he is trying to give himself an out just in case the Giants, (who in the hell I am kidding), when the Giants offense stinks it up again in the coming weeks.

  6. profootballwalk says: Sep 15, 2011 6:03 PM

Throwing your immediate boss under the bus never impresses the big boss. “If he’d do it to him, he’d do it to me.”

  7. jaggedmark says: Sep 15, 2011 6:03 PM

This must be “won’t let it go day”

Giants won’t let it go about Steve Smith
Steelers won’t let it go they got their asses whooped
Raiders won’t let it go Janikowski’s kick was 63 yards
Broncos won’t let it go that Tebow isn’t NFL good enough

  8. naeem42 says: Sep 15, 2011 6:05 PM

Gilbride also criticized Jacobs’ short yardage success for his lack of carries. Clearly the Giants’ offensive struggles are the fault of everyone other than Kevin Gilbride.

  9. jimmytwotimes says: Sep 15, 2011 6:05 PM

If there is any calling out to be done the front office should be calling out Gilbride’s play calling !

  10. flavordave says: Sep 15, 2011 6:06 PM

As an Eagle fan, Smith always made those money 3rd down conversions against us. I have no idea why they would let him walk and talk about him as though he wouldnt play for at least half a year. Giants fans have valid issues with that management. Even though theyre all fat smelly slobba the huts.

  11. bluefan204 says: Sep 15, 2011 6:06 PM

I wish the Giants would distance themselves from Gilbride. This pitiful, completely predictable excuse for an offense will be the downfall of this team, not the Steve Smith debacle

  12. greendreams6 says: Sep 15, 2011 6:07 PM

The Giants dropped the ball coming out of the lockout. They thought sitting on their collective hineys and doing nothing would pay off-WRONG. Now they’re crying because Smith, who waited and waited for an offer signed with the Eagles. Enjoy being the irrelevant team in NY this season again.

  13. amanistumor says: Sep 15, 2011 6:12 PM

va’Giant’s messed up bad letting him go..

Sure they have Nicks but Manningham excelled because he was the 2/3 combo. While I like Manningham, he isn’t good enough to draw double teams off of Nicks like Smith could with his crisp route running. At least the FO is recognizing that fact…..

I bet it’s stroking Smith’s ego all the while he’s on a better team with a chance to make a run into the playoffs and maybe even the big dance.

  14. weweresafe says: Sep 15, 2011 6:13 PM

They didnt thin, doing nothing after the lockout would pay off, they were over the cap, and like other teams over the cap, struggled to keep what they had.

With that said, I wish they were able to keep Smith and get rid of Gilbride

  16. jbl429 says: Sep 15, 2011 6:27 PM

Good, I hope Gilbride keeps running his mouth. It’ll make it easer for the front office to throw his a$$ out after Coughlin is fired at the end of the season (or sooner?). Only thing worse than another year of Coughlin as HC would be if Gilbride was promoted

  21. jimmytwotimes says: Sep 15, 2011 6:35 PM

  23. norcaleagles says: Sep 15, 2011 6:39 PM

WEWERESAFE, If the giants didnt re-sign Smith because they couldnt afford him, then why have people within their organization claimed that they were planning all along to re-sign him but he chose Philly? They COULD HAVE re-signed him, but they thought they would play hardball with him instead, and it backfired. I hope my Eagles learned a lesson from all of this and dont have to learn the hard way next offseason with Desean Jackson because Im sure Desean would do exactly what Smith did if Philly doesnt show that they want him around. And I wouldnt blame him.

  24. eaglesfan290 says: Sep 15, 2011 6:40 PM

I don’t know why the Giants didn’t sign Donald Lee they could have used his help as well the guy was playing really well in Pre Season and they need a TE. Crist they could have had Isaiah Trufant they need help at CB also and they let the Jets scoop him up after we cut him……….worked out well for the Jets he had a TD last weekend after a blocked kick.

Weird moves if you ask me.

  25. redbeardxxv says: Sep 15, 2011 6:46 PM

The team is in transition, Coughlin and Killdrive with both be gone at the end of the season, as will half the coaches/training staff/ and players. Maybe the Dolphins will need a mediocre coach and a bad OC by the end of the year….

To the Giants fans still reminiscing about the three Super Bowls you have won, I have an interesting piece of information for you. “November 9, 2008″. Does that date mean anything to you, Giants fans? That’s the last time your mediocre team beat the Philadelphia Eagles. Six wins in a row for the Eagles. Stop living in the past.

  32. jimmytwotimes says: Sep 15, 2011 7:49 PM

typicaleaglesfan your name is fitting ! In all the illustrious years of the NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS they have only met up 3 times because the eiggles always stunk ! In those three meetings the GIANTS came out on top twice ! Good try with the decade thing thought ! 1960 1960 1960

JIMMYTWOTIMES, The cowboys have more rings than your team does, so does that make them better than the 2011 giants? When a cowboy fan brings up 5 SB trophies do you tuck your tail and say “you’re right, the cowboys must be a better team”? Im sure you dont, because those previous trophies dont mean anything this season. If they did mean anything, maybe your team wouldnt have flopped like a fish out of water vs the skins. Straight up, I can see why you’re mad. Your team is in the basement of the NFC East looking up at the redskins. I know dallas lost last week too, but at least dallas can put together a few scoring drives. Another pick 6 for Interception Eli. Just try and make sure he saves a few for Philly, OK? Even if he doesnt throw an INT against the Eagles, I guess we can always hope for one of those dives/flops/stumbles things that he pulls right before he fumbles the ball(and the game) away in crunch time without even being touched.

If I was a Giants fan. I would be PISSED. You don’t let him go to the Eagles, or any divison rival.

Letting them go to the Eagles, who already has a very explosive, one of the most explosive teams in the NFL. They allowed the Eagles to get better. Smith will contribute this year…and he will do well against third and fourth Defensive backs.

    So Giants fans are right.

  40. myeaglescantwin says: Sep 15, 2011 8:44 PM

again, with the “superbowl-less” comments,, i do think i would rather have a team thats good enough to compete for a title every single year, then suck for 6 years get a title then suck for another 6 years..

in the meantime the only thing you can do is talk about how you got lucky 6 years ago.

Absolutely true, and the Eagles have had the Giants number for a while now. But – not for nothing, by mentioning the Eagles last six wins against the Giants aren’t you also “reminiscing” and “living in the past”?

Dear Uneducated / All Giant fans,

The Eagles have won 2 NFL Championships. If the league goes global and changes the name of the game to the “Football World Championship” are you going to give up your trophies and championships?!? Yeah, didn’t think so.

A championship by any other name is STILL a championship when you’re the last team standing.

Oh yes, don’t forget you haven’t beaten the Eagles in 4 years and youre not even the best team in your own stadium. Now THAT is pathetic!!

I don’t care what any of you say. We won the single greatest upset and championship in my lifetime. On that day I promised myself to never get mad about one year or game. It was the single most satisfying and glorious moment a die hard fan can ever have when watching his team. It was euphoric. Eagles fans can relish their six wins in a row, Steve smith, their team this season, all of it. Cause I already know what being on top of the mountain feels like. What it’s like to see your team win the biggest game against the best team against all the odds when only you believe they can even compete. What it’s like to be the champions, and to do it against an unbeatable team. It was glorious. And if you ever have that moment Eagles fans, you also will understand exactly why we cherish those trophies and laugh at your empty case. Until then, you simply can not and will not ever understand.

What about 3 years ago when we went into Arizona and put it on those “perfect Patriots” LoL….my, how quickly we forget…and what good is it beating the Giants twice a year every year if you’re gonna fold in the playoffs faster than a beach chair….EVERY YEAR….LoL No Heart, Philly has NO HEART….never has, never will….not even with Steve Smith.

My favorite argument. The fact that the Giants have more Super Bowl championships than the Eagles has no bearing on the teams this year, I completely agree.

But to cite championships that were won before the Super Bowl era as defense for the organizations’ drought is sad. We all know that the Eagles do technically have titles, just like we all know that there was a Batman movie where he had nipples on his suit. Either way, given what’s come after each circumstance, we choose to ignore each as unimportant.

polishrod says: “Dear Uneducated / All Giant fans,

Now we know who was the inspiration behind all those Polish jokes. Counting the Super Bowls, the Giants have SEVEN NFL Championships. Only the Packers and Bears have more. BTW- the guy that led the Pack to so many of those Championships was a former Giants assistant coach – Vince Lombardi. Letting Smith go was a mistake. Letting Lombardi go was a disaster.

There is no excuse for the Giants losing Steve Smith. Much like Zack Miller and Raiders, Steve Smith was a vital part of the offense and could have been signed before the lockout or after the lockout. In both cases, the players wanted to re-sign, but took the first offer. The difference between the Giants and Raiders, the Giants can fired Jerry Reece and hire someboby to make smarter decision. The Raiders have no hope as long as Al Davis is alive.
