APThe Chiefs have signed another one of their defensive starters to a long-term deal.
Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports that the team has agreed to a contract extension with cornerback Brandon Flowers. Flowers, a starter since the team made him a second-round pick out of Virginia Tech in 2008, was set to become a free agent after the season. Terms of the deal are not yet known.
Flowers joins Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali as defenders signed to new deals in the last two years. Brandon Carr, who starts opposite Flowers at cornerback, is also on the last year of his rookie deal. On offense, the Chiefs have locked up running back Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe’s contract expires at the end of the season.
The news provides a bit of a reminder that as bad as last week’s loss to the Bills was for Kansas City, there’s still a nucleus of good players for the Chiefs to build around. The question of whether or not Todd Haley is the one doing the building figures to be a big one the rest of the way for the Chiefs.
UPDATE: Andrew Siciliano of the NFL Network has the nitty gritty on the contract. It is a five year/$50 million deal with $22 million guaranteed.
Flowers is a stud. He deserves the extension.
Haley on the other hand … meh.
Good player who deserves the money
When did Chiefs fans turn on Haley…after week 1? He guided the team to their first division title last year and no one saw that coming. I think the guy is whiny and annoying, but Chiefs fans should cut the guy a little slack.
It one week KC, walk back off of that ledge…
This guy is SO overrated. He can’t cover, which last time I checked, is a pre-req to be a CB in the NFL. If you think he can, check the tape from last Sunday against that high-wire act from BUFF that beat him for a pair of TD’s.
So they’ve re-signed Jamaal Charles, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, and now Brandon Flowers. Go on PFT, put out another article about how cheap the Chiefs are….

A….freaking…men. The history of the league is littered with teams that got blown off the field in week 1 and still had good seasons. Hell, I remember one involving Buffalo, when they blasted New England 31-0 in week 1. I’m sure Boston was in a panic, and I think that season ended well for New England. KC can still be a good team.
I guess the chiefs front office didn’t watch last weeks game where he kept getting burnt. Lot a money for a guy who has more bad games than good.
That’s an awful lot of money for a guy with a short-track record of success. Yes, he was good last year. But, that was one year.
This is a non-story. No one seems to want to post that Brett Favre was seen buying Wranglers at the KC Thrift Store today.

He’s been good since the day he walked into the league.
He’ll get a chance to earn his money this week against Calvin Johnson.
The Cheapskates open up the wallet, a little.

The reason anyone with common sense is down on Haley is the fact he has won exactly 4 games as the Chiefs coach without Charlie Weiss as his play caller. Once he took over play calling duties from Weiss last season after Weiss let them know he was leaving, we have been blow out the last three HOME games. Last game of the 2010 season to Oakland, blown out by the Ravens in the 1st round of the playoffs, and now an embarrassing loss to Buffalo( no knock on Buffalo, I like Chan Gailey and think he’s doing a good job).
Cassel has seemed lost without Weiss. The let a personality conflict lead to cutting Brian Waters. The let their two nose tackles leave in free agency, not that they were great, but what team leaves such a glaring hole in their roster? This team has regressed.
To reenforce my point- the last three games the Chiefs have played- all losses- they have been outscored 108-24.
2 JAN 11 – Raiders 31-10
9 JAN 11 – Ravens 30-7
11 SEP 11 – Bills 47-7
That’s not to say they can’t turn it around, but it’s looking very Josh McDaniel like.

Yup! I’m a die hard fan, and as soon as Haley hired a non-playcalling OC, I knew it was the start of the end. I was absolutely not surprised by the outcome or lack of scoring last week. I was let down a bit by the defense, but not a lot considering that the Bills starting field position was almost mid-field all day. I’m really hoping Pioli gets rid of the bum after the 1-15 season (sorry Colts) that the Chiefs are about to suffer thru!

Megatron will get a 100 plus and 2 td’s. Welcome to your new contact. (Did I mention that Calvin’s on my fantasy team)
Thats a pretty huge contract for an above average CB, then again CB’s even above average are hard to get in the NFL.
Side note, I don’t think he’ll be able to handle Calvin on Sunday.
