Report: Blank seethed as Vick threw garbage-time score against Falcons

Divisional Playoffs - Green Bay Packers v Atlanta Falcons Getty Images

As the Eagles prepare to return to the Georgia Dome, with Mike Vick now the starting quarterback, it makes sense to devote some time to the last time Vick and the Eagles were in town.

The Eagles blew out the Falcons, 34-7, and Philly coach Andy Reid inserted Vick into the game late, allowing him to throw a 43-yard pass to receiver Reggie Brown and a five-yard touchdown to tight end Brent Celek.  The score, which came after most Falcons fans left and as Vick supporters reveled, didn’t sit well with Atlanta owner Arthur Blank.

Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports reports that Blank “would come to view” the move “as a gratuitous gesture of disrespect.”

Blank will join Peter King, Russ Thaler, and yours truly on tonight’s NBC SportsTalk, and we’ll ask Blank about that moment, along with plenty of other things.

Tune in to VERSUS at 6:00 p.m. ET for the show.  We’ll also be joined by Steelers safety Ryan Clark and 49ers tight end Vernon Davis.

Plus, Rosenthal will be sitting at the grown-ups’ table for the fantasy football segment, since I’m appearing via signals transmitted by tin can and string from my basement.

If you don’t like it, Artie, there’s always the option of playing defense.

Why be mad at Vick? Blank should be mad at the Falcons’ D for letting 2 TDs happen. Last time I checked you played 4 full quarters of football.

  3. buddycianci says: Sep 16, 2011 4:48 PM

If Falcons “fans” cheer for the opponent’s QB again, Atlanta’s players should be ashamed to wear the uniform. In this case, Blank position is righteous.

  4. cobrala2 says: Sep 16, 2011 4:48 PM

Make sure to ask him this:

What’s worse, Mr. Blank – seeing your former franchise player burn you twice in garbage or hear your stadium chanting “We Want Vick!” BEFORE Andy Reid let Vick loose?

Apparently your fanbase was quite happy with what Philly brought them, nevermind the fact that 3 Falcons fans I know that were also there readily admitted that 33% or more of the stadium was filled with Eagles fans.

    In Atlanta.

THAT is what should be focused on here.

  5. chowface86 says: Sep 16, 2011 4:50 PM

Get ready to watch Vick shatter multiple records. Atlanta is just the hood anyway.

  7. cobrala2 says: Sep 16, 2011 4:51 PM

P.S. – I’m tired of the outright or muddled complaints of teams running the score up in the NFL. Sometimes the victors can’t help when the losers quit mid-game.

That’s a general statement as I’m not saying that explicitly about this game, but there ought to be a level of pride in each player’s and coach’s heart that makes them take a hard look in the mirror after such a game.

  8. randallcobb says: Sep 16, 2011 4:54 PM

    Yawn.

  9. turbodog1027 says: Sep 16, 2011 4:54 PM

Sure gonna be fun to see Vick light up the nasty birds. I bet Matty Ice is crying by the 3rd quarter.

  10. jagmania65 says: Sep 16, 2011 5:00 PM

Well, now that Vick has a fat new contract, he can make up for that “disrespect” by repaying Blank the signing bonus money he still owes the Falcons…

  11. sonvar says: Sep 16, 2011 5:00 PM

Well Arthur Blank you do pay players to play defense. You may not like it but I have no sympathy when a team gets blasted in the pros. In college I’m more sympathetic.

    Nothing to see here.
    Move along.

  14. kylexitron says: Sep 16, 2011 5:05 PM

sounds more like the falcon’s defense was the one that didn’t respect the eagles if they allowed their backup QB at the time to throw two touchdown passes against them. This time come ready to play and you won’t look foolish.

  15. cowboyhater says: Sep 16, 2011 5:08 PM

    —————————-

I have no sympathy there either. Until the NCAA finally agrees to give the fans what they want (a playoff system) teams need to rely on margin of victory as part of the formula for BCS rankings, and therefore how much you win by matters quite a bit.

  17. jakek2 says: Sep 16, 2011 5:11 PM

Atlanta’s fans may not care for the team or Blank but Atlanta’s players love Blank. Don’t be surprised if one of them plants Vick nicely out of respect for their owner.

There is no crying in baseball and there is no “running up the score” in football.

These are highly paid professionals. Even the scrubs make more than 99% of Americans. Play defense and/or STFU.

  29. rpiotr01 says: Sep 16, 2011 5:30 PM

    Put yourself in Blank’s shoes:

You own a franchise. You’re very fond of that franchise. You put the keys to this franchise in the hands of a talented QB. You trust him to be the face of your franchise. You trust him so much that you sign checks for tens of millions of dollars to go into this guy’s pocket.

    How does he repay you?

He uses that money to run an illegal gambling operation out of one of his mansions.

He uses that money to engage in the abhorrent act of dog fighting.

He uses his fame (and that money) to attract others to engage in dog fighting.

He goes to jail. He gets cut. Loses his money.

Comes back into the league with another team. Whatever, that’s all football stuff.

So finally he comes into your stadium and rather than act with any kind of remorse, Vick acts like somehow HE was the victim. That HE was wronged when you cut him… when you cut him after he took millions of dollars to engage in morally despicable and illegal acts. And now HE is going to stick it to his old team by throwing garbage time TDs.

Screw Vick. He doesn’t get it and never will. Blank had every right to feel that way.

  30. kliplee says: Sep 16, 2011 5:31 PM

So by this logic it means that a gesture of respect would have been throwing interceptions for touchdowns?

get real, vick had a job to do and he did it well.

  31. eaglesfansarenitwitsvickslaughtersdogs says: Sep 16, 2011 5:32 PM

  34. savannahrose44 says: Sep 16, 2011 5:36 PM

    @ lawyermalloy

Um I’m pretty sure Vick is in Bankruptcy because he screwed himself over by running an illegal dog fighting ring, getting caught and spending 2 years in the federal pen.

  35. atlsage says: Sep 16, 2011 5:37 PM

The game should be closer considering Michael Turner and Matt Ryan didn’t play.

  36. wcdunkenfield says: Sep 16, 2011 5:45 PM

As an Eagle fan living in ATL, I can tell you there is a goodly portion of the fan base here that still supports Michael. They still wear his jerseys to games, and not simply because they might not be able to afford new ones (that’s not a put down but an economic statement).

It’s an odd situation with their reactions. They will cheer him as an Eagle as long if the Falcons are winning, as it’s a “no skin off my back” effort to do so. But when things move to the point where it’s clear the Falcons won’t win, they get a bit confused and will boo him.

You see groups of folks that are together rooting for and against him. They don’t know what to do. He’s one of the few superstars they’ve ever had here. And he had a lot of street cred, and those hardcore folks make up a big portion of the ticket-holders.

Overall, they find it hard to let it go; they still see him as a Falcon.

  37. scudbot says: Sep 16, 2011 5:45 PM

lawyermalloy says: “Since Blang and his Org. are the single biggest reason Vick is in Bankruptcy…”

Vick is the victim, huh? Getting nailed for the illegal interstate dog fighting ring that went for five years plus may have had something to do with it. I seem to recall that he lost his product endorsement deals too as well as mismanaged his money.

  38. rushmatic says: Sep 16, 2011 5:50 PM

Surprised to see that more fans aren’t calling Reid classless, etc.

As a Pats fan, I guess I’ve just come to expect the worst in other fans.

  39. scudbot says: Sep 16, 2011 5:51 PM

I fully expect “Lights Out” Vick to feel free to use his extremely bad judgement and say something incredibly stupid if the Eagles beat Atlanta.

  40. wcdunkenfield says: Sep 16, 2011 5:55 PM

And, there’s probably another aspect to Mr. Blank’s attitude toward Vick. Mr. Blank is a very good guy. He took a personal interest in Michael, and I’ve always gotten the feeling he was deeply offended with what Michael did to screw things up. Mr. Blank put a lot of effort in that other owners might not do. He takes things personally because he CARES.

And once Michael violated that trust, I think anything Vick did would offend Mr. Blank. It likely does not take much to set him off where the subject is Vick.

Give me a break… I can understand why Reid put him in there (it’s his original team, give him some confidence) but when your up 21+ points in the 4th give your runningback the ball and kill the clock… Don’t let someone get hurt

  42. tjstyles says: Sep 16, 2011 5:57 PM

I am so tired of coaches, owners and players that the professional level in sports complaining about teams playing hard when they have a lead. I am a Minnesota fan, and watching the Wolves year after year, I know what it is like to see a team get blown out. And it is not the loses that piss me off, its the last 10-15 minutes of the game with during garbage time when everyone is just going through the motions. I am paying money to see COMPETITIVE sports, not a bunch of pansies running out the clock. If you are going to do that, have the league put in a mercy rule and stop wasting our time.

When the Eagles went up 27-7 did the Falcons stop trying to score? How many touchdowns should the Eagles allow the Falcons to score before they play competitively again? Blank is basically complaining that the Eagles’ second string out played his starters. Oh, boo hoo. I love to bash the Eagles cause my friend is a big Philly fan, but this week I hope they win 56-0.

  43. scudbot says: Sep 16, 2011 5:59 PM

“Surprised to see that more fans aren’t calling Reid classless…” Andy Reid is classless. And a horrible time manager.

  44. Deb says: Sep 16, 2011 6:14 PM

Ryan Clark? Swell. In 34 as a faithful fan, I’ve never been as frustrated with a Steelers squad as I’ve been this week. Not even in 1989 when we lost our two opening games against Cincy and Cleveland by a combined score of 92-10. Afterward no Steelers told reporters: “Well, I just had a bad day” (after personally giving up FIVE turnovers) or “It’s just one game, not the Super Bowl” (after just losing the Super Bowl, too). No, that team–which didn’t have a tenth the talent this one does–shut up, busted their butts, and made the playoffs despite it all.

All I want to hear from this team now is “We’re focused on preparing for Seattle.” Wonder if Ryan Clark can manage that.

And you would think that after he saw that happened, he would tell his GM and coach to invest some time in their defense, but then he would have missed the time to scold Vick. After all that is what really matters.

  48. eaglesblow says: Sep 16, 2011 6:39 PM

Andy’s all about trying to show up the other guy, From an opening onside kick against Bill Parcells that ended up being the fastest score in NFL history to this, he has built up a lot of bad karma and will never win a championship because of it (and because he routinely makes gameday mistakes that no high school coach should ever make).

  49. eaglesblow says: Sep 16, 2011 6:41 PM

A plus to the Vick supporters staying to cheer their hero on is that there was nobody to stab anybody in the parking lot as everybody else left.

  50. laeaglefan says: Sep 16, 2011 6:45 PM

What Blank doesn’t understand is that when a backup player gets into a game, he wants to show what he can do and have some fun doing it What fun is it to take a knee (which is obviously what Blank expected).
Blank should be mad at his defense for allowing it to happen, not at the Eagles for trying to score.

  51. jacksaysfu says: Sep 16, 2011 6:59 PM

Stop acting like Turner & Ryan are gonna be the difference cause they both played last year and still got spanked . I think ATL is alot better then last weeks game , but the Eagles are way better then their showing in STL Sunday . My prediction –> 30-17 Eagles …. Everyone loves finding Philly’s faults , but the truth is the Eagles are very good on both sides of the ball .

So as A Eagles fan allow me to cover my bases . The Skins have not won the division this Millenium , 1999 . The big bad Cowboys are coming off a 6-10 laugher (and Romo’s recent 4th Qtr comedy show) . And the Giants , well besides the Sundays Skins spanking , can’t beat us(6-0) . So whoever you and your boyfriend cheer for , just remember that the East runs through Philly and your team is below us in the standings . Signed , The reigning/future division champs

I will never feel one tiny bit sorry for Blank. He enabled Vick, and made him feel even more “can’t touch this” than he already did. He coddled Vick like no one else on the team. Pushed him around in a wheelchair on the sidelines, let him choose the decor for the condos they had for players, patted his face and cooed at him on the sidelines (that footage made me puke). Gave him a huge contract when he had a piss poor work ethic, wasn’t progressing as a player, and had the leadership qualities of shrimp while having an inversely proportioned ego. You enable someone, that’s your choice and you reap what you sow.

    @realnflmaster,
If you are gonna call my city (Philly) filthy, Ima make the asumption, since you are a Jets fan, that your’re from the suburbs of Jersey. Or NY. NY has some “filthy” spots too my man. Anyway with that said I have a little trivia for ya. The Jets are 0-8 lifetime against the Eagles in the regular season. So history shows that the chances of your team beating us is very slim. Your offense has not scored a td in the first quarter in 16 straight games. We will score first and then harrass Sanchez all game. We will beat yaw easily cuz the Jets’ offense can hardly score.

  70. legendaryjedeye says: Sep 17, 2011 2:13 AM

PS, The Jets haven’t won the Superbowl since January 12, 1969, against the Baltimore Colts. Mind you, that was the NFL vs the AFL In Superbowl 3 lol.

  71. thefirstsmilergrogan says: Sep 17, 2011 7:39 AM

8man: let me get this straight. you think knowing which team a person wants to win will tell you whether they are talking out their rectum? As if you rooting for new england (or whomever) makes you smarter, righter, better, etc.? Like you contributed to Belichick and Brady’s success?

    Clearly a 30 watt bulb.

piotro: you said this- ” So finally he comes into your stadium and rather than act with any kind of remorse, Vick acts like somehow HE was the victim. That HE was wronged when you cut him… when you cut him after he took millions of dollars to engage in morally despicable and illegal acts. And now HE is going to stick it to his old team by throwing garbage time TDs.”

You must remember something no one else does. No one else here thought vick acted like a victim.

And for those who say andy is classless: it was late in the season. vick had been working his rear off the whole time to get better (the results arrived last year). andy gave him only one series; after mcnabb had been sacked one or two plays in to the fourth quarter. the fact he completed a 43 yard pass and a 5 yard touchdown were just what happened. Kolb, who was #3 that day, came in the next series (with single digit minutes left) and ran the ball.

For those that want people to not run up the score, its simple; institute a white flag rule. when the team behind wants the team ahead to stop playing for real they should raise the white flag. everyone can go home earlier, and no one will have to endure those insult to injury scores. until then, if they play for money and your team is still playing as hard as it can, so will mine.
