I cant say this enough times. Since teams have a limited number of replays per game they should be allowed to review penalties. This was a huge penalty in the game that helped their drive continue.

That’s what happens when a commissioner makes up dumb rules and then tells the ref to make discretionary calls erring on the side of caution. It’s gonna cost teams games. The commissioner is damaging the game.

Hard to believe he didn’t get fined for Perfectly legal hit. Maybe the NFL can do something right.

Refs made up for that call with a phantom roughing the kicker call against Hawks later. So it all evened out

they should make it so the NFL is fined for every bad call they make (straight to the pockets of the ‘offending’ player.) Fair is fair.

you don’t go screwin up a game, accidentally or not, and expect to get away with it. what if the penalty led to some points that changed the outcome of the game? refs are so quick to throw flags for the most ridiculous crap nowadays, maybe if they’re penalized themselves they’ll reel it in a little.

Goodell could probably handle that. Jack Tatum has been dead for over a year (July 27, 2010). I’m betting he couldn’t get much of a running start.

This is getting dumber and dumber. I’m not sure whether it’s the officiating, the rules themselves, or the league’s constant fumbling around with replays, interpretations, fines, etc. Whatever it is, it’s affecting the integrity of the game and the NFL must take steps to clean it up.

The NFL needs to take a serious look at this with their officials. This play isn’t an isolated case.
The league made a huge change of direction with officiating a couple years ago when they were directed to “err on the side of caution,” on plays that could be unsafe.
The result is penalties thrown on players doing EXACTLY what the league has said they need to do. It is becoming impossible for the players to play the game and the outcome of far too many games is being determined by these “best guess” kind of calls.

Actually, the penalty took place on 2nd and 7 from the San Francisco 32. A kick from that spot would have been 49-50 yards, well within Hauschka’s range (given he kicked a 51 yarder to win a preseason game).

This should be easily fixed – review all of these calls. The person that reviews every scoring play (and then tells the ref he should review them) could review these plays quickly…without the need to tell the ref to review them. I’m not one for slowing down the game with more reviews, but these penalties can have a huge impact on the game.

I’ve not kept accurate count, but isn’t this at least the fourth time so far this season/pre-season that a hitee has said that the hitter should not be fined or was willing to pay the fine of the hitter?
Imagine how many other bad calls that there were that didn’t get attention drawn to them for one reason or another. The refereeing is absolutely horrible.

The NFL is going so soft it’s pathetic.
