Jon Kitna briefly replaces injured Tony Romo

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo left today’s game in San Francisco after taking a hard hit to the back.

Romo appeared to be hurt when 49ers defensive back Carlos Rogers came on a blitz and drilled him from behind. TV cameras caught Romo walking gingerly from the sideline to the locker room. Early indications were that Romo had suffered a rib injury.

Backup Jon Kitna came on in Romo’s place and threw an interception on his first series.

The 49ers lead the Cowboys 14-7 in the third quarter.

UPDATE: Romo returned late in the third quarter with the 49ers up 21-14.
