Make the "injured" player sit out from entering the field of play for specified minimum time (say 10 minutes) if their "injury" causes the clock to be stopped at any point or is prevented from starting within a normal flow of the game.

Soccer punishes divers with a yellow card, but the implications of a card are so high refs are loathe to call out the fakers. If soccer followed the same rule that anyone being taken off by a stretcher must sit out for a period of time, that stuff would stop too.

Exactly what "evidence" does league need? They make subjective calls all the time on other fines based on nothing more than video, so why so scared to make the call on this based on the video? And if you aren't prepared to do that, then change the rules for injury timeouts. Force teams to sit out players longer. Or force them to give their players better acting lessons. But bur your head in the sand on a blatant abuse of the rules?

uwsptke says: Sep 20, 2011 1:17 PM

This could spread like wildfire if unenforced.

How many times have we seen a team driving with under a minute and no timeouts, with a defense protecting against the out route. The QB dumps it off over the middle which is wide open, but the receiver is tackled before he can get out of bounds. If there isn’t enough time to get the FG unit out on the field before time expires, now the guy can just lay there and pretend to be hurt? Playclock stops, and when play resumes the FG unit is magically on the field.

This WILL happen if nothing is done to protect against it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
You're right. Play clock stops for an injury. And if it's in the last 2 minutes of the half/game, and the injured players team has no time outs, there is a 10 second run off on the clock. That would, in your scenario, end the game.

Asked and answered. It's magic.

You people are idiots. If an offense feels the need to run a hurry up offense when there is actually no hurry (not close to half/end of game) just so the D can't substitute, that's an unfair advantage for the Offense. For only the Offense to be able to dictate if it will substitute solely on the fact that it has the ball is preposterous. The Defense should be allowed to substitute when need be as much as the Offense. This is just smart. What next? Timeouts can only be used on Offense? Think, dummies.

Put them both (and the coaching staff if you like) under the scrutiny of a lie-detector and see. This isn’t an issue that falls inline with the admissibility rules of a public court, so a lie detector result COULD be all that is needed to hand down a punishment to the players and possibly the organization.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love how people will complain "There are too many rules...the league is getting in the way...let the players play!", and now you want lie-detector tests?!?!
How about they just let the refs administer Sodium Pentathol (truth serum) right there on the sideline and get an answer during a commercial break?

This could spread like wildfire if unenforced.

How many times have we seen a team driving with under a minute and no timeouts, with a defense protecting against the out route. The QB dumps it off over the middle which is wide open, but the receiver is tackled before he can get out of bounds. If there isn't enough time to get the FG unit out on the field before time expires, now the guy can just lay there and pretend to be hurt? Playclock stops, and when play resumes the FG unit is magically on the field.

This WILL happen if nothing is done to protect against it.

I am a rarity in the US; I love the NFL and soccer. I have to tell you, the NFL has to nip this in the bud NOW, diving is the worst part of soccer.

Those 2 were obviously faking, as they were standing fine, right before that. Hefty fines, and a minimum down absence will be the only thing to remedy this.

(Those 2 should have to leave the game, and cannot return at any point in that defensive series. I suggest that, as many players have incentive-laden contracts and will be very much adverse to leaving the action for an extended period of time. Also, the coaching staff's, at a minimum, should be fined.)

While agree that something should be done, what do you do about players who think they are hurt? More and more physicians and trainers tell players to stay down if they hear "pops" or feel pulls, etc...especially when it comes to head/neck region. I would like the NFL to do something about the flopping exhibited by this thread's video's...either stop players from playing the rest of the series, or make a mandatory number of missed snaps post injury...but how would one regulate it?

After the "injury," take the player out of the game for the remainder of the series, and do not allow another substitution until the following play ends.

Example:

Rams complete a thirty-yard bomb inside the Giants' redzone. Two defenders plop to the ground like sissies. Referees call time because they're doing their job. The two morons are taken off the field to "be examined" for the remainder of the drive. Play resumes with just two substitutions. After said play finishes, substitutions can be made as regulated.

Seems fair, right?
