NFL players think Brady is the man to build a team around

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady looks on against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second half of their pre-season NFL football game in Foxborough Reuters

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is the reigning MVP and widely regarded as the best player in the NFL right now. But is he also the best player to build a team around for the future?

He is, at least according to his peers.

A Sports Illustrated poll asked 272 NFL players, “Who would you pick first if you were building a team from scratch?” Brady came in first, with 24 percent of the votes. Peyton Manning came in second, with 18 percent — a result that likely would have been different if the poll had been taken later, as this survey was distributed to players before we all knew how severe Manning’s neck injury was. Coming in third place was Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, at 14 percent.

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was the highest-ranked non-quarterback, at 7 percent. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick came in fifth at 6 percent, and Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, at 4 percent, was the only defensive player to make the Top 10.

Peterson and Suh had votes? LOL.

Nobody who isn’t a quarterback should have had a vote.

Whatever players think that don’t know shi!. Look at the season pats had without Brady(11-5), now the colts without Manning(0-2)and no signs of getting better. Its clear who the NFL MVP is even if he is not playing. Think about it.

    ===============================

Here’s the deal with that 11-5 season. They beat a bunch of bad teams and lost to every team that they played that was a .500 team. It’s probably one of the reasons they lost a tie breaker and didn’t make the playoffs that season. But Manning and Brady have both been great quarterbacks and the vote pretty much says that.

So Brady should be penalized because the Pats plan a lot better than the Colts do?? LOL

Brady is the better QB, Manning has had probowl recievers his whole career and the same offensive coordinator.

Brady threw to the likes of Reche Caldwell and friends during his super bowl years and has had a new offensive coordinator almost every year.

The Colts losing 15 games this year will have nothing to do with Manning’s value over Brady – but it will have everything to do with Matt Cassels value over Curtis Painter and or the 52 year old Kerry Collins signed the week before the season.

Voice for reason18 just because the colts never groomed a backup QB is not Bradys fault….credit that to BB and credit this colts season to Pollian for completely ignoring the fact that you haven’t had a decent back up for many years. The pats can go 11-5 without Brady because their a first class organization run the right way. The colts have no one to Blane but themselves.

Bradys individual MVP years trump mannings and he may have a third….oh yeah he also has two more rings. By his peers he was selected the best player of 2011 and also on sports illustrated. For years Brady has always been the guy analyst put as the greatest QB of this era. He is absolutely lighting it up this year. If he finishes this yeR with another MVP and more importantly a 4th ring he will go down as the greatest….not one of.

The man has done more with less players around him. Manning has been throwing to hall of famers and Brady got his one in 07 and you saw what he did to the league. Look at the year they traded that hall of famed, he posted numbers maybe even more impressive.

Can’t go wrong with taking the golden boy…..

  18. habsman says: Sep 22, 2011 9:16 PM

Just think what Brady’s stats would look like if he had probowl receivers all his career, and if he played all his home games in a cozy climate controlled dome stadium.

  19. bigwhitey says: Sep 22, 2011 9:18 PM

If you are starting a team from scratch, why would you start with a QB in his mid 30’s? That disqualifies both Brady and Peyton. Give me Rodgers, Ryan, Stafford, or Bradford.

  20. adlent says: Sep 22, 2011 9:21 PM

I love both QBs, but Manning made his WRs Pro Bowlers.

And really, we are talking about two pro bowl receivers – Harrison and Wayne.

The Patriots during their Super Bowl years had a far better defense than they necessarily did offenses (which were still good). You don’t necessarily need Pro Bowlers to dink and dunk your way down the field.

Manning never had the team around him Brady has had, so you can blame the front office and I wouldn’t blame Manning. The running game has been atrocious since James left. The defense was never really any good.

Now since the Patriots won Super Bowls, they have surrounded Brady with a decent receiver or two (Moss and Welker). Now they remind me more of the Colts: Lots of yards and no defense. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Pats dominate the regular season and burn out in the playoffs. Maybe the criticism of Manning should lessen if Pats keep flaming out with a similar team structure around Brady.

  26. j98me2 says: Sep 22, 2011 10:31 PM

The pats went 11-5 without Brady because the somebody had enough brains to get a serviceable backup.

That’s just crappy planning by the coaching and front office staffs in Indy. That has nothing to do with Brady or Manning.

“They…lost to every team that they played that was a .500 team. It’s probably one of the reasons they lost a tie breaker and didn’t make the playoffs that season.”
    ————————————

Here’s the deal: Your “facts” are wrong. The Pats beat the 9-7 Jets, the 8-8 Broncos, 11-5 Dolphins, and the 9-7 Arizona Cardinals in 2008. And the reason why they lost the tie breaker was because the Ravens had a better conference record. Nothing more.

  28. rc33 says: Sep 22, 2011 10:40 PM

Marvin Harrison averaged almost 70 receptions a season before Peyton even arrived.

    So Manning “made” him?
    Don’t think so.

  29. ButkisMyDick says: Sep 22, 2011 11:18 PM

“Manning made his WR probowlers” Really? Austin Collie set NCAA records as a wideout. Also, remember this. Deion Branch with the Patriots became a Superbowl MVP, then he went to Seattle and was MIA, then he comes back to the Patriots… and guess what? He’s great again.

The players are the one’s who have to play with their choice, not the fans. The player’s vote speaks volumes on how much respect Brady gets. What we think is irrelevent, though it does amaze me how many think they know more than the players and their organizational heads. But hey, that’s what us couch potato analyst do best.

  34. rc33 says: Sep 23, 2011 10:41 AM

What guy loses sleep over another guy’s haircut?

More to the point, keep on slamming Brady, haters.
I mean, he’s only been doing this QB thing a dozen years or so.
270 career TD passes and every one because of the system. Or his Offensive Line.
Or Belichick ( no wait, he cheats)

I hear he’s totally overrated and that’s all I need to know.
So keep up the good fight; I’m confident you’ll soon convince everyone how mediocre he truly is.

  35. thephantomstranger says: Sep 23, 2011 11:40 AM

I just wanted to point out that NFL players had Adrian Peterson fourth for who you want to build a franchise around. Some people should remember that when they say that he wasn’t worth his new contract and that running backs are not that valuable. Obviously, you’d want to build around a quarterback first, but Adrian is the kind of player who makes everyone around him better.

But Roger (Former Jet Employee) Goodell didn’t take away their Lombardi’s.

    Why? ? ?
