Two Bengals caught up in marijuana mess

Jerome Simpson, Andre Goodman AP

Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson and Bengals offensive lineman Anthony Collins were detained Tuesday after 2.5 pounds of marijuana arrived at Simpson’s home.

According to Janice Morse and Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, both players were present when Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package.

Per the report, another six pounds of marijuana were found in Simpson’s home, along with “packaging materials, scales and smoking devices.”

Authorities reportedly suspect that Simpson’s house was set up as a “potential distribution network,” and that marijuana was indeed being distributed from the residence.

Neither player has been arrested, yet.  Both participated in practice on Wednesday.  Per the Enquirer, Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said the team was aware of the reports, but Brennan offered no other comments.

just legalize it and we won’t have to deal with all silliness of it all-your neighbor, the guy who fixes your car, the sports announcer, the old lady down the street with the lovely garden, your kids teacher, et al could all be toking up from time to time-so let’s not have a hissy fit every time some athlete uses it. Make it legal, tax it and you won’t have people selling it on the side. It’s OK for a player to enjoy a few drinks but it’s not OK to use something less harmful?

Just a misunderstanding. They both need $ 25,000 worth of Maryjane for their glaucoma. 6.5 pounds is only a 90 day supply for both guys. NFL would not notice this trace amount in blood stream with the “current” random testing process. And the scales are for measuring proper daily dosage.

The cops must have been curious when the saw the package was certified USPS mail from sender “Cannabis247.com”.

This will blow over and was a big misunderstanding. Both player should start on Sunday.

Wow… sooooo 8.5 pounds of pot at Simpson’s home… and no arrests?

If he was Jerome “the Bus Driver with the big head” Simpson (Chris Rock reference), he would be in jail for 20 years for felony posession, intent to distribute, and using the mail as a distribution channel… among many many many other counts…

I recently read an article that the Bengals had cleared up their image a bit… welp, back to the drawing board…

Are any football teams in Ohio legit law abiding citizens? I submit there is NOT.

  47. dollarbill247 says: Sep 22, 2011 9:02 AM

Also, Jerome Simpson dropped the pass that wouldve put us in field goal range for the win against Denver…sadly I doubt Brown will cut him.

  48. jeff14333 says: Sep 22, 2011 9:02 AM

This crap is funny, you couldnt make this stuff up..Amazing, that Mike Brown continues to sign these idiots. I guess that s what you get when you have the worst Scouting Dept in the NFL and are known for having the worst franchise in all of Professional sports.

I am a cop, I worked narcotics for 13 years..Let me enlighten the one who asked how they were not arrested…

Can you say SNITCH….I would bet that they are cooperating against the people out west or one of their HOMIES has come forward and has told the police that Simpson and Collins didnt know that he/she was using the address to get weed.

Marvin Lewis is an idiot..He had the chance to leave Cincy and chose to stay..WTH…

  49. berniemadoffsides says: Sep 22, 2011 9:20 AM

Honestly, just LOOK at the police blogger or obituaries involving the Bengals over the past five years – how is Marvin Lewis still coaching in the NFL?

  50. richm2256 says: Sep 22, 2011 9:40 AM

Bad enough an NFL player is around weed, especially during the season, but this moron was SELLING it???? Over EIGHT POUNDS of it????? How are you an NFL player and need to moonlight as a drug dealer?

And to make this even more of a joke, of course he’s a Bengal’s player.

    Defend THIS one, Bengals fans.

    Does NOTHING embarrass that organization?

  56. dollarbill247 says: Sep 22, 2011 10:12 AM

    @berniemadoffsides:

Look deeper Marvin had a chance to leave and stayed…Its not his doing. Mike Brown controls everything within that franchise. Lewis succeeded everywhere he went until he came to Cincy.

Lewis has 0 control over who he drafts. All Mike Brown wants is anything cheap. In the draft cheap sometimes means character flaws. That why that police blog is so long.

As far as mentioning the obituary thats just absurd…let Slim RIP.

Whether it should be legal or not, less harmful than alcohol or not….

It’s ILLEGAL now, and why on earth would you risk you NFL…NFL…NFL career and paydays.

That does epitomize stupidity. They should be sent to jail and suspended w/o pay for the stupidity of it all.

  60. dwightmlee says: Sep 22, 2011 11:17 AM

So, in Ohio they don’t even bother to arrest you when you are clearly distributing from your home? And the Bengals don’t even bother to take any action about it? No wonder this is the worst franchise in the history of the NFL!!

Will be interesting to see how Marvin handles this issue and how Mikey handles Marvin handling the issue. Marvin kicked Chris Henry off the team a few years back, only to have Mikey hire him back without Marv’s consent. Talk about dysfunctional management.

It will be even more interesting to see how many games Roger (The Hammer) Goodell suspends them for. If a tatoo and some pocket cash is worth a 5 game suspension then what is 8 pounds of smoke worth.

Maybe Roger will suspend them by the pound.
