Patriots safety Patrick Chung made a surprise return to practice Friday, but his status remains uncertain for Sunday’s game despite a report earlier this week that said Chung was out.
Either way, the Patriots are going to make sure they are covered at safety during Sunday’s game against the Bills. Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe reports that safety Ross Ventrone will be activated from the practice squad.
Ventrone, who has an entertaining Twitter page, can help fill in if Chung is out at New England’s thinnest position. The Patriots will also be without right tackle Sebastian Vollmer and tight end Aaron Hernandez.
Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com notes the team didn’t sign a punter, which is a sign Zoltan Mesko should be available for the Patriots.
UPDATE: The Patriots officially confirmed the move. They signed A.J. Edds to the practice squad.

I would guess that number 85 will finally get his chance to make a significant contribution.
Mathew Slater may have to make a few plays as well.
When did the Patriots start scouting at the local Metal shows?
Isn’t Darren Sharper still available? Ray Ventrone couldn’t cover Stephen Hawking. Ventrone will be cannon fodder to NFL offenses. I’m a Pats fan but sometimes I wonder what GM Belichick sees when he evaluates talent.
live from the headbangers ball… its Ross Ventrone!!! *insert megadeath song here*
The Patriots just promoted Stuttering John the day before a big game. Is Babba Booey filling in for Koppen?
This looks like the guy who sent Jerome Simpson that package.
That guy is HILARIOUS on Workaholics
Hopefully the game wont interfer with band practice for Ventrone
Most solid NFL Bet ever……..Ross Ventrone will enter into league substance abuse program.
This is your chance Miami to get A.J. Edds back and keep him for good.
Rats, I thought this was referring to the Browns’ Ventrone. I was pretty excited thinking they had gotten rid of that stiff without me knowing and then he had been picked up my the patriots. Then I was thinking, man, if Belichick thought that much of him maybe we made a mistake. And I wanted him back. But now that I understand, I’m bummed that we still have Ventrone. Back to square one.
Looking at this guy’s picture…he looks pretty mean. He must be good.
^ Taylor Mays looked mean to. Plays with stiffer hips than my grandpa.
This guy looks like that Metallica poster with all members staring all mean.
I thought Cliff Burton died.

In Bill we Trust.
Trust your coach, this is a very heads-up, aggressive player. He reads offenses well, kind of a Jim Leonhard type.
