Patriots safety Patrick Chung made a surprise return to practice Friday, but his status remains uncertain for Sunday’s game despite a report earlier this week that said Chung was out.

Either way, the Patriots are going to make sure they are covered at safety during Sunday’s game against the Bills. Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe reports that safety Ross Ventrone will be activated from the practice squad.

Ventrone, who has an entertaining Twitter page, can help fill in if Chung is out at New England’s thinnest position. The Patriots will also be without right tackle Sebastian Vollmer and tight end Aaron Hernandez.

Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com notes the team didn’t sign a punter, which is a sign Zoltan Mesko should be available for the Patriots.

UPDATE: The Patriots officially confirmed the move. They signed A.J. Edds to the practice squad.
