Eagles will keep same starting linebackers

Cleveland Browns v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

Michael Vick’s injury is getting all the attention, but Philly’s defense was just as concerning on Sunday.

While the Eagles played well for most of the game, their less dreamy players gave up too many big plays to the Giants.  Rookie linebacker Casey Matthews struggled on a touchdown toss to Brandon Jacobs, but the Oregon grad apparently won’t lose his job yet.

Defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said Philly was planning to go with the same starting group at linebacker.

“Looks like for this week,” Castillo said.

Coach Andy Reid failed to answer the question earlier in the day.

The Eagles defense has the right matchup to bounce back this week. They host the 49ers.

Their safeties were equally as inadequate. Opposing O’s are saying “Let’s NOT throw at Asomugha and Samuels” and that elementary thinking is paying dividends.

As a Packers fan that really wanted to see the Matthews brothers on the same team together and was mad when they didnt draft him with a pick considering how late he went…Looks like this is why im not a GM in the NFL lol

Everybody’s blaming the backers but really, they’re not covered at all with that crazy front the Eagles use.

At least TRY to protect them.

Note to coaching staff: It’s Casey. Not Clay.

  5. howley1 says: Sep 26, 2011 1:18 PM

Kind of dumb to keep the same LBs in there and switch their positions like it’s gonna fix the problem. Who’s driving that failboat? Looks like nobody.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE REST OF THE NFC EAST !!!!!!!!

words can’t express how angry i am with this coaching staff right now.

It’s not like they have any alternative. Unless there is a rare in-season trade or a team cuts a good player, then currently the Eagles are going with their best set of linebackers. They made a mistake in the off-season and now they have to live with it. Hopefully this group will grow and get better. I wouldn’t hold my breath though.

Niner fan will be happy, now Gore (if he doesn’t wimp out) might average 3.2yds per carry!

  9. packerblitz says: Sep 26, 2011 1:27 PM

I bet if Casey had a different last name, he would not be starting right now.

    Man… We suck.

  11. netherscourge says: Sep 26, 2011 1:28 PM

What the heck choice does Juan have?

The Eagles Front Office overloaded the team at Cornerback and Defensive line – AT THE EXPENSE of Linebackers and Safeties.

Well, every team will be running the ball right up the middle and passing right over the crappy linebackers’ heads.

    /game over Dream Team

Why is everyone singling out Casey Matthews. He’s a rookie. If he stinks at the end of the year, that’s sumthing else. Asomougha has looked downright terrible. They should stop being fancy and just put him on one side and shut someone down. Thad what he does. Let drc do all the roaming. It’s castillos fault, stop being cute and just line up and play to te players strengths, not your stupid scheme

  13. pheelingphine says: Sep 26, 2011 1:53 PM

Casey out. Rolle in. Tackling drills everyday.

  14. Land Snark says: Sep 26, 2011 1:58 PM

    @grapes911 and netherscourge

    Totally agreed.

There were so many other FA pickups that could have been made.

But the front office and Reid seem content with late round LBs or washed up has beens or never was players.

I kept thinking “what would that D look like with Lofa Tatupu running the show?”

But obviously there was never a chance that a half decent LB like that would ever be brought in unless he totally stunk.

  15. snowpea84 says: Sep 26, 2011 1:58 PM

Casey Mathews has looked like a backup at best to date. He has been too slow and too small.

  16. terrellblowens says: Sep 26, 2011 1:59 PM

Fokou and Chaney are fine. Inconsistent but can be at least average. Matthews is terrible. He has no speed or instincts and can’t tackle or cover. Brian Rolle in limited action outperformed him in every way. I don’t understand why Rolle doesn’t get the nod at WILL

If I could +100, I would. I’d also say that Matthews has been exploited EVERY week, and we have other players who are hungry and have played WILL before (Akeem Jordan for one, you know, the guy who was a “better” MLB than Bradley last year, only to prove to be stronger at WILL). The fact that he’s still on the field on most downs is ridiculous.

Love the amount of attention the Eagles recieve on this website, it allows for a great educated discussion of issues facing the team

  19. bigbirdsfan says: Sep 26, 2011 2:31 PM

You would think it is week 8. Remember this the Eagles will start to gel next week and then more the next week. They will win the division. I am a falcons fan…

  20. mjacobs45 says: Sep 26, 2011 2:36 PM

Fokou and Chaney are average? Fokou had one tackle last week vs. the Falcons. ONE! Both were 7th round picks for a reason!

This LB corp is easily the worst in the league and they might just be collectively the worst in the history of the NFL. This just in Reid: YOU CAN’T HIDE 5 POSITIONS ON THIS DEFENSE!!!

  21. mezter says: Sep 26, 2011 2:38 PM

The Niners are a horrible match up for them. Do you see either of these linebackers being able to cover Vernon Davis or Delanie Walker? I doubt it. The Niners need to attack this defense where it’s weak. The Linebackers.

  22. ahostiletakeover says: Sep 26, 2011 2:42 PM

Months ago I said the Eagles should be worried about their defense, especially with Castillo doing a job he hadn’t held in more than a decade. Execution and in some places experience are to blame too, but Castillo’s scheme and play calling wouldn’t be inspiring me if I was an Eagles fan.

  23. richie215 says: Sep 26, 2011 2:42 PM

    Eagles LBs = NJ Turnpike.

  24. greymares says: Sep 26, 2011 3:00 PM

the only aspect playing well is the pass rush, everything else needs repair. plus i wouldn’t give D. Jackson one more nickle until he starts to catch the ball (but i think they new that)

I think you maybe a closet Eagles fan or an Eagles fan pretending to be a Falcons fan so people don’t think your opinion is biased, and you don’t automatically get a thumbs down.

You defend the Eagles way too much and have nothing to say about the Falcons. Besides of course saying that your Falcons fan on every post.

Castillo never held a defensive coach position anywhere except at the high school level. Never coached defense in the NFL for all of his career, not just the last decade. The last decade he was an offensive line coach. He was handed the DC position by his buddy Andy Reid even though he had no experience whatsoever coaching defense in the NFL. Not a DL coach, not a LB coach, not a secondary coach, not an assistant to a coordinator, nothing, nada, zilch his entire career. Unbelievable!

  27. cowboysblowgoats says: Sep 26, 2011 3:41 PM

Eagles built a top notch “D”, and handed the keys to an unproven rookie DC. Brilliant.

Anybody else think Vernon Davis is sporting some serious wood this week about the upcoming matchups this weekend? LOL

  30. 5f6a says: Sep 26, 2011 4:04 PM

With any luck, Vick will play and the 49ers will end his career. He’s sub-human filth and deserves what he did to those dogs.

  31. theharshestreality says: Sep 26, 2011 4:08 PM

It may not matter now – with Vick hurt (again) and VY (a vaginal cream, right?) or Kafka (wasn’t he in Taxi?) waiting in the wings, this could get ugly real quick.

  32. omegaichiban says: Sep 26, 2011 4:09 PM

whoever that weakside linebacker the Eagles cut after the season, they should have kept. According to the ESPN The Mag article he was a beast. There is nothing beastly about the LB corps right now.

  33. omegaichiban says: Sep 26, 2011 4:16 PM

Note to all fans: If you have a way to do so, alert your def Coordinator/head coach. You absolutely cannot let the TE get a free release (i.e. Gonzalez for the Falcons) unless he has no hands (literally)
Any other outcome will kill you (i.e. Gonzalez)

  34. lawless25 says: Sep 26, 2011 4:24 PM

Why is Reid getting all the bad flack?? Exactly whose genius idea was it to hire a guy like Juan Castillo as a DC? He was a former offensive line coach. That is like asking Howard Mudd to do the same job. There were so many great candidates out there (Jim Washburn), and they dropped the ball on this one…..much like Michael Vick does!

  35. upperdecker19 says: Sep 26, 2011 4:39 PM

  36. zaggs says: Sep 26, 2011 4:56 PM

Regardless of the outcome, he lost his attention on 1 play. Of course his attention was one of the biggest players on the Giants. But still just 1 play.

  37. bleedgreen4life says: Sep 26, 2011 5:02 PM

I also think B. Rolle should be given his chance. Casey obviously isn’t taking advantage of it so why not shake it up. Keep Chaney in the middle. The OLBs should be up for grabs in my opinion. God, where is Jim Johnson when you need him. RIP.

  38. firethewalrus says: Sep 26, 2011 5:05 PM

Fredo Matthews has ZERO discernable football skills. He might look the part and his name might fool you into thinking he can play… but he can’t. He’s a liability in the run game AND the pass game. On running plays, he disappears from the instant an offensive player touches him. He has no ability to shed a block whatsoever and gets blown up by a Fullback, Lineman or Wide Receiver on every single play. And he may actually be even worse in coverage! Fredo allowed Brandon Jacobs – yes, 264 pound Brandon “Big Meat” Jacobs – to slip by him and catch a ball for an untouched 40-yard touchdown.

    Fire The Walrus

Me thinking,,,if the Eagles lose to the Niners this week…a definite possibility as the Niners defense is stout….they could be 1-5 at the bye…Not good…nice knowing you Andy!

    And in the end …….
    Eagles to Feagles ……
    Once again …….

It’s a joy to watch the Feagles implode ….. Couldn’t happen to a better team or fanbase …..

“The Eagles defense has the right matchup to bounce back this week. They host the 49ers.”

For those that are continually hating on the 49ers offense. Alex Smith has a 91 quarterback rating and is completing 70% of his passes. The largest problem has been redzone scoring, but as your previous post showed, the 49ers got screwed on that Crabtree touchdown. The Niners are moving the ball just fine, and Smith looks like a new guy out there. Against a team like the Eagles who have no linebackers and a backup quarterback, I think San Fran will bring it to them pretty hard, and it won’t be an easy win for Philly.
