Reid: Vick has hand contusion, not fracture

New York Giants v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

Andy Reid’s dour mood at Monday’s press conference belied the relatively sunny news he offered to reporters.

Further tests by the Eagles revealed that Michael Vick does not have a fracture in his hand. Reid said that an x-ray taken Sunday was incorrect.

Vick was “relieved” by the news, although swelling in the hand has not gone down yet after a “contusion.”  Reid wouldn’t say whether Vick could play this week, simply focusing on Vick’s swelling.

“Make sure you listen to the other guy’s questions,” Reid chided reporters after repeated attempts to get more information.

The Eagles also got good news about Jeremy Maclin’s hamstring. The team feared a serious injury, but an MRI revealed Maclin is “day-to-day” and the injury is not too serious.

Wideout Riley Cooper suffered a concussion against the Giants, so Steve Smith could have a bigger role this week.

So, we might get to see the human tackling dummy again this weekend?

I think Philly is in trouble. I still wonder why they picked up Nnamdi and his big money when they already have 2 excellent corners. On top of this, they have incompetent linebackers and a mediocre D-line. Any team with a decent running game is going to wear these guys out. As a sidenote, Nnamdi has been largely ineffective so far and has gotten torched a few times. Vick also can’t continue to take the pounding he has over 16 weeks. I’d be worried if I was an Eagles fan.

Take a week off, both of you. JMac in particular- let that hammy heal! (ahem, arian foster) Let Vince Young and Steve Smith play against SF next week, we’ll be fine.

Thanks for that first one yesterday, Steve. Once a Giant, always a Giant.

  11. howley1 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:43 PM

Why did they say he had a broken hand if they didn’t see it on the xrays? Hm, can’t see what isn’t there. I wouldn’t trust their team doctors to read an xray or an MRI correctly or to be honest about what they see or don’t see even if they can.

  12. nysaysbringit says: Sep 26, 2011 12:44 PM

Oh!..Now its NOT a fracture?.LOL…The X-ray was wrong?…LOL..what kind of $hit is that?..Ok folks here it comes…Vick will play next week due to pressure on the team to win….Why dont you just tell everyone that? The Eagles dont stand a rats chance in hell without Vick and everyone knows it right now.

  13. zach011 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:47 PM

Vick should still sit out at least next week to recover. I don’t think the Eagles should be too worried yet though, they usually have weak starts and strong finishes. They could easily be 3-0 right now if it wasn’t for 2 very bad 4th quarters

Eagles should def be able to win next week with or without vick

  14. RussianBreadMaker says: Sep 26, 2011 12:49 PM

At 1-2, this team is no ‘Dream Team.’

  15. kingjoe1 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:50 PM

The Eagles are one of the softest teams in football. They have no power running game and they don’t tackle well.
This team needs a big hitter on defense and learn how to throw quick out pass to succeed in short yardage.
A power running game would be great, but that aint happening.

Without a complete attitude adjustment this team my have a shot at Andrew Luck.

  16. thelegends123 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:50 PM

  17. babyjesus69 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:51 PM

Take a week off, they’ll be fine??? Is this a quote from A raiders fan cause the statement is pretty delusional. Are the eagles playing Baylor this week or something? The niners D is pretty tough. Look what they did to Romo. It’s the NFL. There are no cakewalks, especially in a season as unpredictable as this one

  18. howley1 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:51 PM

Reports of our demise are greatly exaggerated.

    ————————

Think so? The Eagles have still lost 4 of the last 5 games Vick has started, and he’s still coughed up the ball NINE TIMES in those games. Their defense is what it is… not very good. Also it seems like Vick is getting more than just physical injuries. He played scared yesterday. Afraid to run, afraid to stay in the pocket. His psyche is a bowl of jello right now. You could tell by his body language during the game and his comments after the game. An owie (not a fracture) on his non throwing hand took him completely out of the game and may keep him out of the next one. That’s assuming that his hand really was hurt and the Eagles just didn’t want to admit that they benched the hundred million dollar man. And after the Eagles released that he had a broken hand without any evidence whatsoever that it was broken, I wouldn’t believe a word they say.

  19. clintonportisheadd says: Sep 26, 2011 12:54 PM

Since when did Andy Reid become believable?

  20. howley1 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:54 PM

Vick will play next week due to pressure on the team to win

    —————

I think they are much more likely to sit Vick so they have an excuse to LOSE (if they lose). Another loss with Vick and the Eagles will be cleaning a hundred million dollars worth of egg off their faces in September (as opposed to January).

  21. hus10188 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:57 PM

Probably still has symptoms of concussion and the eagles are just using his hand injury as a smokescreen to the league and like Reid’s gameplans, they can’t even do that well.

Desperate times for the ‘dream’ team.

  22. howley1 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:57 PM

OK, early October. I forgot what day it was.

  23. nysaysbringit says: Sep 26, 2011 12:57 PM

Does all this nonsense really matter if the Eagles O-line still sucks next week?

  24. buckybadger says: Sep 26, 2011 12:58 PM

I never thought he had a broken hand. As he was walking off the field he pulled up his pants with both hands very casually and didn’t flinch. Didn’t have the body language of a guy with a broken hand.

  25. ladymacesq says: Sep 26, 2011 12:58 PM

Vick’s fracture must have healed just as miraculously as Tony Romo’s punctured lung.

  26. 4evrnyt says: Sep 26, 2011 12:58 PM

OK so we have punctured lungs that heal in 3 days and broken hands that suddenly aren’t broken. Either the NFL has the worst doctors in the world, or the best.

  27. groundpounder95 says: Sep 26, 2011 12:59 PM

  30. bigbirdsfan says: Sep 26, 2011 1:03 PM

Dear Vick haters, I am not an Eagles fan. He is by far a better QB than Eli will ever be. Eli takes plays off for bug bites. Your defense is horrible (shady McCoy ran all over it repeatedly and you could do nothing to stop him) and you got real lucky on 3 plays that got you scores. Luck only helps in the regular season. You will fall apart as usual in October, and the Eagles love them or hate them will thrive and again win your division. Enjoy your victory, but remember it will once again be short lived…..

    go falcons….who also stink…

  31. danielcp0303 says: Sep 26, 2011 1:06 PM

Wait a minute…so Vick was complaining about getting hit after his hand got bruised? If he didn’t think he could play with a bruise on his non throwing hand, can he play with any sort of pain? I’m sure the trainers didn’t wanna send him out there with a broken hand, but he looked like he was in unbearable pain.

  32. lbdpatch says: Sep 26, 2011 1:07 PM

Remember It was Vick who made one of the greatest comebacks In history. coming back from a 4 touchdown deficit In 7 minutes against a 100% healthy giants defense at the meadowlands. Oh don’t forget the 185 pound WR who ran through that same healthy defense in the last 3 sec of game. FYI The first huge comeback In history also happened In the meadowlands against the eagles. You won one game In the past seven games.

  33. howley1 says: Sep 26, 2011 1:10 PM

Broken bones can’t heal in three days. Punctured lungs can. Think of how long it takes for your skin to heal after you get a shot, or even an IV. Internal organs heal much faster than skin does.

It’s tempting to agree, even as an Eagles fan. But they have come back from worse performances than this early in the season. It’s their M.O. As a fan it’s very frustrating because they lose games they are supposed to win and win games they should lose, but the fact is they by December they are usually in the hunt and firing on all cylinders.

  35. ladymacesq says: Sep 26, 2011 1:14 PM

He must beat the monkey with his non-throwing hand. That’s why he ‘came’ out of the game.

  36. hendawg21 says: Sep 26, 2011 1:17 PM

So the X-rays lied??? Or are we trying to cover up something here? See here’s whats wrong first even as far back at his days at VT Vick was prone to injury and playing the way he does only gives more chances that he’ll continue to be beat up/injury prone, second thing this is only week 3 it isn’t going to get any easier or better still have the Giants again in NY, 2 games with Dallas and 2 games with Washington.

If probably safe to say Vicks either now or later is going to miss some significant games…

  37. tinkletinkleonyourstar says: Sep 26, 2011 1:19 PM

Vick is better than Eli? Laughable. In the NFL, the ring is the only thing that matters. Vick can be as flashy as he wants, but he will NEVER lead a team to a Super Bowl.

Eli has a ring and did so by being clutch when he had to. Therefore, he is better. End of discussion.

  40. nygf says: Sep 26, 2011 1:29 PM

Hey bigbirdsfan. If you took Eli’s entire career, and magically made it so he had the exact same results for the Eagles or Falcons, he’d be the best QB in the histories of both franchises and, as far as the Falcons are concerned, it wouldn’t be close.

  43. hystoracle says: Sep 26, 2011 1:35 PM

@bigbirdsfan — One thing Eli has over Vick is quite simply — Scoreboard! Eli may throw a lot of picks and may be eternally between 10th to 15th best QB in the league. However, he doesn’t get hurt every week like Vick.

Way to pick out some arbitrary number of games dating back into last year.

Poor tackling and play calling were the reason we lost yesterday, not Vick’s tentativeness or whatever you want to call it. Clearly we have issues but it’s 3 games into it. Shady was a beast yesterday. Cole and Jenkins are playing very well. If we lose to San Fran I will revise my statement.

Nnamdi does have talent, but I’ve said it before which is why Oakland let him go, he is a talent for what Oaklands defensive scheme is. He was drafted for that scheme. Why do you think at Oakland he rarely locked on a single receiver and just played his side? And did you see how well Raiders back up DBs played against Jets?? Oh and Stanford Routt has the best burn rating of all DBs right now. Why do you think Deangelo Hall was awful in Oakland? Raiders may not always have the best scheme in place, but contrary to all the “experts” they draft and develop well for their scheme. Nnamdi has not looked confortable, not even tackling, which he did well in Oakland

So Tony Romo breaks a rib, and punctures a lung and makes sure his team wins, while vick complains and leaves the game with bruised non throwing hand. Sounds like someone should be playing basketball where you are praised for drawing fouls. Romo>Vick

  56. phillybirds says: Sep 26, 2011 2:19 PM

we made a lot of unneccesary moves in the shortened offseason this year… Ever since the superbowl year the Eagles have entered each season unprepared. Not sure who’s starting where, moving around players, you know.. doing things that should be done in the offseason. I’m not going to complain about Nnamdi Asomough because I’m happy to have him, but why did we trade Kolb for an awesome outside cornerback and then shift him to a position he isnt comfortable playing? How does that help our team in 2011? Steve Smith and Ronnie Brown also seem to be pointless signings (unless they dont resign DeSean Jackson).

There’s nothing wrong with complaining when you watch your team sneak into the playoffs every year just to be beat by a real football team. I dont get satisfaction making the playoffs with a 9-7 record when we have superstars on our team. There’s way too many holes, holes that have been there for a few years now. We haven’t had a good safety since Brian Dawkins and we haven’t had real linebackers since the superbowl. You could say the same about our offensive line.

  57. mrjackson206 says: Sep 26, 2011 2:21 PM

Vick is wounded. If I were Eagles fans I’d be praying that Vick sits out one week because the Niners will take Vick out too just like they did Romo. Niners will beat the Eagles. You heard it here first.

    Very odd mis-diagnosis.

As a niner’s fan, i completely empathize with the problems on the O-Line. Our’s is by far the worst unit in the league.

When healthy, Vick’s very impressive and is tough/frustrating to gameplan against. Regardless, i hope he get’s the start this sunday, because i’d like to see how the 9ers stack up against one of the league’s top teams. (even if your record doesn’t reflect that).

The eagle’s D, while not so stout against the run, will be up against a Line that generates NO push, and could not pass block for the life of them. A whopping 2.5 yrds/carry from a declining Gore, and leaving an average QB with about 1.6 seconds before the backfield is swarmed with green jersey’s won’t help us.

We’ll be missing Edwards, so your secondary should be able to contain Crabtree, Morgan and Ginn/Williams, leaving Vernon Davis to make the most plays for us. My guess is that while the other receivers will be pressed, you can afford a safety to spy on davis.

Welcome back Akers – he’s been automatic for us.

Our D line should get some good pressure and we’ll contain the run game, but we’ll get burned by the screen passes and quick slants to Desean that go for 80 yard scores.

Sadly, the Eagles have had our number during the recent past but we made it interesting the last time around…

With that being said – this is the NFL, where anything can happen so let’s see.

    Pipe Dream: 49ers 24 Eagles 17
    Reality: 49ers 10 Eagles 27

Vick recently admitted that he has never studied defensive formations, and that he now wants to learn that side of being a QB. Nine seasons into his career he decides a QB should study. The Eagles were fools for keeping Vick and trading Kolb.

Here’s what they really fear: Kafka gets a start and plays well. If that were to happen they’d have a QB controversy all over again with a virtual rookie vs a $100,000,000, injury-prone, overhyped, undersized, turnover machine.

I predicted they would regret that Vick contract within two seasons. My prediction may have come true within two months.

i watched the ari sea game (had money on it) and eagles fans, trust me, keeping kolb was not the answer. he is average at best.

tigrrrr If you want to live in the past then remember the 7 minute comeback from a 4 touchdown deficit and when a 185 pound WR ran through the giants 100% healthy defense. You won one game in the past seven. Get real dude

Tom Brady plus Peyton Manning plus Drew Breese combined for less flags thrown their way all of last year than Vick did. Vick had more calls go his way then all three combined. What a pus.

Dear Vick haters, I am not an Eagles fan. He is by far a better QB than Eli will ever be. Eli takes plays off for bug bites.
    ————————————–
Vick supporters are so amusing to listen to.

Keep touting a guy that has never had back to back winning seasons in the NFL & has always disappointed in postseason.

Eli has never missed a start & has played with a sepatated shoulder. Also, in case you dummies have forgotten, Eli has a Lombardi. Which is one more than the entire Eagle organization has won.

Vick wins the crybaby award & has never won anything on an NFL field.

    Mediocre Defensive line????????

Yeah that mediocre d line only leads the nfl in sacks you numpty!!

    ——————–

Only because the Cowboys haven’t played yet.

Niners will take Vick out too just like they did Romo.

    ———————–

You mean Vick will come back in the 4th quarter and make the Niners D look like a Div. II squad?

OK, so the Eagles have lost two of the last three games Vick has started. Feel better?

lbdpatch – As a Philly fan, I expect you to be an ignorant assclown. Let’s look at your mistakes 1) Vick and the Eagles did NOT end the Giants season last year. Had the Giants beaten GB the following week, they would have made the playoffs. 2) Vick was the QB for the worse beating in NFL history. Nope. Bears beat the Skins 73-0 in 1940. Pretty sure Vick didn’t play in that one. 3) “You lost to Rex Grossman.” Funny, I remember the Eagles losing to Washington week 4 last year with McNabb as QB. Right now, Grossman is a hell of a lot better than McNabb! 4) “Ok you all keep saying that the ring is all that matters.” Why else do they play and keep score if the ring does not matter? Obviously, it’s a sore point with you because Philly can’t get it done. But just because the team you root for is inept come playoff time, does not mean winning the Super Bowl is irrelevant. If you had any courage, you would admit you would give up your right arm to see the Eagles win the Lombardi. 5) “You won one game In the past seven games.” Yes, but our team won the Super Bowl just under four years ago. So, that’s why we’re rubbing this loss into your face. You Philly idiots have spent the last three years acting like winning a regular season game means something. The only game that matters is the Super Bowl. It’s what every player plays for and every fan prays for. Regular season wins are meaningless unless you win the postseason. For three years you assclowns have thrown yourselves a victory parade when you won against the Giants. Not ONE of those wins translated into even a Super Bowl appearance. Are you seeing how moronic it is to celebrate a regular season win yet or are you too thick to realize we’re just throwing the same garbage you idiots have been spewing for the last three years?

I’m assuming MJD will be tweeting anytime now questioning Vicks toughness right? Or does that only happen when the QB is white ?

  85. opsherr says: Sep 26, 2011 3:57 PM

Too bad Vick doesn’t have a body contusion that would leave him in unforgettable pain like the little dog he bodyslammed to death.

  86. pacash80 says: Sep 26, 2011 4:05 PM

@giablommi, rings are the only things that matter for quarterbacks? Well, I guess that means that Eli Manning, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, Brad Johnson, and Trent Dilfer are all better than Dan Marino.

  87. zaggs says: Sep 26, 2011 4:29 PM

Yeah, and he still wasn’t concussed. Someone needs to have the league investigate Philly’s medical staff. Vick wasn’t himself, Steve Smith isn’t up to form, Maclin keeps getting hurt. They are BS’ing their players and leading them to get hurt.

What, u mad bro? You forget Eli has 2 things Vick will never have. A superbowl ring, and the lead for consecutive starts by active QB’s.
Also yes McCoy did put up big numbers, but so did Ahmad Bradshaw against the Egirls.
Eli also passed for more yardage than both Philly QB’s and had 3 less picks.
Oh and JPP single handily kicked Philly’s Oline’s ass!

Way to pick out some arbitrary number of games dating back into last year.

Okay, how about this: Since the beginning of last season, the Eagles are 11-9, and in games that Vick played during that time, they are 9-7.

    Elite? Er…

  90. kevpft says: Sep 26, 2011 5:25 PM

Going ahead with Vick looks more like a desperation move all the time. In Kolb you had a capable, smart, talented, loyal QB who could have developed along with the rest of their very young offense, and in a couple more years you’d have had a well-oiled offensive machine that could play the type of balanced game we see from the likes of New England and New Orleans.

Instead, they impatiently hitch their wagon to a guy that is fragile, routinely beaten up, and frankly, starting to get old for the type of game he plays. Vick’s simply not going to be able to outrun defenses for much longer before he loses that edge of speed (or injury slows him down abruptly). He’s barely above .500 as an Eagle (9-7 in Eagles games he’s played) already; how is that going to improve when his biggest strength is the first thing that’s going to go?

Andy Reid is lying, as usual, when it comes to injuries.

  92. chocolatebaconbutter says: Sep 26, 2011 6:27 PM

I lost all respect for this guy as a player yesterday. Whining afterwards at the press conference. Just shut up and say the better team won this day. It’s football. Bring your hardhat to work or don’t come. If I were an Eagle fan I’d have more respect for Kafka.

  93. 23yankees says: Sep 26, 2011 8:22 PM

Andy Reid is a boar, plain and simple. Chiding reporters for doing their job? Why don’t you do your job Andy and be available to the press and answer their questions? Sounds like the Wet Dream Team is cracking!
