Has it been THAT long since Colts fans have had to figure out a QB depth chart? With the "Talent" they're evaluating it means that Painter will start if Collins can't and they're looking for Painters backup.

Cleveland had to do this in 08 when Derek Anderson who was #2 on the depth chart but starting because #1 Brady Quinn was on IR, went down (coincidentally after a game against Indy)and 3rd stringer Ken Dorsey had to start the next game. Basically they had to go into the "not good enough for any NFL teams that year" pile to get Bruce Gradkowski to back up Dorsey. Like Dorsey, Painter is the #3 QB on the depth chart which means there is no one behind him in case he gets hurt. That's where indy is now.

How in God's name are they not bringing back Jim Sorgi RIGHT NOW???

The guy knows the Colts system inside and out, he isn't that far removed from the Colts, he's a free agent, and his shoulder has got to feel better after a year out?

This guy has scored with the Colts offense, and has GOT to be a better choice than these other two schmucks.

To those wondering why they don't go get Garrard or Palmer or Favre or whoever, the team paid Collins $4 million and went 0-3. They didn't have a ton of cap space as it was, Collins was a last minute hail mary. Garrard and Favre would want starter money, Palmer would cost picks AND he's owed something like $11 million this year. They're not going to bring in a high-priced QB that will take 3+ games to really know the system or develop chemistry with the receivers.

The season is over. Time to evaluate what talent is (and isn't) there and hopefully clean house in the coaching staff and front office.

Topher says: Sep 27, 2011 12:43 PM

The scuttlebutt around town is that Collins isn’t so injured and the Colts are trying to let Chris Polian save face. If another quarterback signed it wouldn’t surprise to see Collins placed on IR and then cut with an injury settlement allowing all parties a chance to save face.
------

It has nothing to do with Chris. Bringing Collins in was an Uncle Bill move. Bill has regained control of the front office. I don't even know what Chris does now.

Gabbert, in case you hadn't noticed, is starting for the Jags--it's Garrard who's sitting. And I agree with those who are puzzled that the Colts aren't going after him. Max Hall is on the Cards IR with a shoulder problem and is out for the season. No one's going to swing a deal for Carson Palmer because Mike Brown (Bengals GM) is too stubborn to do it. I bet Brady Quinn could be had for a song and, yes, Culpepper could be a stop-gap.
What about Max Hall? He was all the rage for about 5 minutes. Or, they may as well just elevate Mike Hartline from the practice squad.

Honestly, this QB situation is really an ugly one, right now. Ugh...

So not having a proper backup ready, and bringing someone out of retirement to start after only 17 days, isn't working?

The people I feel bad for are Collins (who deserved better than this thankless task) and Painter (who never should have been in the role if management didn't have confidence in him, and who doesn't deserve the humiliation of the team working out such mediocre QBs).

Also, all the other players on the team who work hard but can't turn the tide of unpreparedness that the team has been left in by its management. We're now seeing that player acquisition, player development, and coaching is a disaster on this team.

That Manning has led this team to so many winning & playoff seasons now looks like so much more of an achievement. Whatever faults he may have, he's taken a humble team to high places.

What would be karma for this team's management? Maybe just missing out on the race for Luck and having Manning leave to coach the Texans... :)

Wow, they REALLY don’t like Curtis Painter…

If they're signing a QB it's probably just to have SOMEONE in uniform besides Painter who has actually played QB, if Collins can't go this week.

But they really must not like Orlovsky if they already kind of know him and Brodie Croyle's name still came up anyway. Ouch!
