Cowboys say bad snaps were caused by Redskins’ cheating

Cowboys quarterback Romo is slow to get up after being hit by Redskins linebacker Fletcher in Arlington, Texas Reuters

The Dallas Cowboys had several botched shotgun snaps on Monday night, with center Phil Costa hiking the ball to Tony Romo before Romo was ready. After the game, the Cowboys said that was because the Redskins were cheating.

NFL rules prohibit defensive players from making “disconcerting signals” by pretending to call out the quarterback’s cadence, but Romo said after the game that’s exactly what some Redskins defensive linemen were doing.

“We’ve got to get the snap thing worked out,” Romo said. “Costa said the D-line kept calling out the snap count. We’ll get that worked out. We’ll tell the league and see if that’s something that can be fixed because you’re not supposed to be able to do that. So we’ll see. But we can’t have that happen. We shouldn’t have been in that situation.”

ESPNDallas.com suggested that former Cowboys defensive end Stephen Bowen, who now plays for the Redskins, might have helped the Redskins learn Romo’s cadences to fool Costa into snapping the ball.

Disconcerting signals happen often in the NFL but are rarely called. Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck accused Broncos defensive lineman Kevin Vickerson of doing the same thing on Sunday.

For his part, Costa says he won’t blame anyone but himself for the botched snaps.

I mean, you’ve got to take the blame for it,” Costa said. “And right now, get that problem fixed, without a doubt, and move on to the Lions.”

With Ndamukong Suh coming to town, Costa has his hands full this week.

Sounds like fishing to me. Watching the body language of Costa and Romo it showed zero signs of blaming the Redskins d-line.

Oh well, you won the game despite looking awful. Good job picking up the blitz so Romo could heave it to Dez Bryant and bad job of the Redskins offense failing to capitalize on chances. No matter how improved the defense is or what kind of talent we have in Washington, if you can’t punch the ball in the end zone you won’t win more than 8 games a year.

This is just the Cowboys whining over a victory needless to say! It shouldn’t be a rule because the Center should be able to tell the difference between his QB that is behind him and D-lineman that are right in front of him! To me its just an excuse to slap it on the other team instead of taking the responsibility! Vick complained after a loss which is expected by most teams that lose, but after a victory? Come on man!!!! Cowboys C just had a horrible game and now it looks like a childish story saying “I would have not have done it if they didn’t cheat!” Excuses excuses!

Costa you need to man up to your mistakes and stop making excuses like a child! I expect my comments to be hated because the thumbs down is most likely from a Cowboys fan anyway!

    Dallas Cryboys.

What a horrible MNF broadcast. I had to turn it off listening to the coverage team massage Romo’s prostate with their comments.

Austin was out, yet they made it sound like they didn’t have an NFL receiving corpse at all without him. By listening to the broadcast, you’d think they just got 3 or 4 guys from the home depot parking lot to try to catch passes.

Every good play was obviously Romo’s magic. Every terrible play was because his Teammates were letting him down.

Bow down before Romo, the only player to ever play through an injury.

And everyone wonders why the Cowboys have gone from being “America’s Team” to Drama Garbage.

Finally, how stupid is it wait until after the game to point this out?

For those that say it’s part of the game, please tell me when blatant attempts to cheat were woven into the game.

It doesn’t really sound like Romo is claiming this happened by his own experience, but more that he’s taking Costa’s word on it. After the game Romo claimed that Costa told him it had been going on. As a Cowboys fan its hard to decide whether its legitimate or just the excuse Costa came up with for playing so poorly. I tend to lean toward the latter, but I remember Gurode had this problem pop up occasionally too, so I’m thinking that its a bit of Romo’s cadence being easy to duplicate and that teams are actually doing it. I would imagine there will be quite a bit of practice time spent this week to fix the problem.

  55. mwcarolina says: Sep 27, 2011 8:13 PM

  65. macwomack says: Sep 27, 2011 9:13 PM

I get that calling out the count could call the center to snap the ball early but how exactly does this to get the center to launch the ball 20 or 25 yards down field?

Also if this is the case why was Romo yelling at the center during the game and not yelling at the D-line or officials.

Dallas won the game and still the team has sour grapes? What gives with that? Sour grapes has no places for winners. If Romo keeps crying he’ll start sounding a lot like MeAngelo.

It needs to be addressed by the league, they’ve been made aware of it and I’m quite sure when we go to their house later this year it won’t be an issue, because it was brought up to the league and fixed or fixed by the Cowboys themselves.

For what it’s worth, and sort of interesting since so many were roasting Hall for the play, here’s Mike Pereira’s take on the face mask call.

    Comment From Anthony Anthony :
    Tuesday September 27, 2011 1:15

The facemask on D. Hall during Dallas’ last scoring drive… I thought it’s not a penalty unless you grab the mask (and pull on it)?

1:16 That wasn’t a foul. There was no twist, turn or jerk. That was the old version of the 5 yard penalty. You are all over it, Anthony.

Gotta laugh at walking turds like Jamie Chapman thinking that Costa couching his weak comments with “but it’s our fault and we have to fix it” negates the fact that he made excuses to deflect the blame of his poor play. Saying it was his fault after accusing the Skins of cheating (where’s the snap count on all those shotgun snaps he blew?) is MEANINGLESS…he already made the excuse you mentard.

Oh and D Hall is a loudmouthed punk for sure but he was right…there was no foul and yes he got screwed. That said, the loudmouth still was responsible for giving up multiple big plays including the penultimate one on 3rd and 21 so he needs a big cup of STFU.
