Dan Hampton chooses not to go to White House

AP

On October 7, the 1985 Bears will finally get their long-overdue trip to the White House after winning the Super Bowl.

Some guys, like Panthers coach Ron Rivera, can’t make it due to their current gigs.  Another guy has no conflict, but nevertheless won’t go.

Hall of Famer Dan Hampton told our friends at WSCR that he opted not to accept the invitation.  Hampton said he was irked that the invitation didn’t extend to spouses and children.  “Secondly, I’m not a fan of the guy in the White House, and third, it was 25 years ago,” Hampton said, via USA Today.  “Let it go.”

President Obama, a Bears fan, recently extended the offer, given that the Bears didn’t get a chance to visit the White House.

“It basically just rolled off our backs, and now, 25 years later to say, ‘Let’s put the band back together,'” Hampton said.  “No, I’m not in.”

That’s his prerogative.  We’ve got a feeling that the main reason is that Hampton isn’t a “fan” of Obama.  Which also is his prerogative.  Still, if anyone from the ’85 Bears was going to take such a grumpy-old-man stance, we would have guessed that it would have been their head coach.

  1. Whether you like or dislike the President, he is the leader of the country, and getting invited to the White House to meet him should be considered an honor and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Personal feelings and stances should be set aside, in my opinion.

  2. He really showed them. Now he’ll probably get a Ford truck commercial deal and go on tour with Toby Keith

  3. I’m not a fan of the man in the white House either, and it is not racial.. We need a man like Herman Cain to lead our country!

  4. Too bad for him. Who cares if you are a fan or not of the man. He is at this time, The President of the United States of America. The office itself should be respected as well as the generous offer itself. The team will probably have a great time just being there. I am sure there are a lot of fans in that White House.

  5. He’s not a fan eh? Would he rather the alternative, and the tea party comes into power? I hope he’ll be happy in a few years when his football injuries catch up to him and he’s desperately calling 911 for help, and they transfer him to their sales department so he can discuss which payment plan he’d like to enroll in.

  6. Dan Hampton is a complete jack ass…..what does ideology have to do with having your team honored in the white house? I’m pretty sure of all the championship teams that visit the whitehouse, everyone is’nt always a fan of the sitting president…smh

  7. Honestly, the No Spouses thing would irk me, too. If you want them to come now (25 years later), figure out a way to let spouses come, for crying out loud.

  8. Hampton should reconsider. I’m sure he could get away with crushing a few of Obama’s phalanges in a hearty handshake before security intervened.

  9. I’m not a fan either, this man is INTENTIONALLY running our economy into the ground. Then suggests that penalizing (via tax increases) those who create jobs (the rich) will somehow turn things arournd!

  10. good for him!! I definitely wouldn’t accept an invitation to the white house from this president. I hope we have the good sense to get him out of there in 2012. I respect Dan Hampton for standing up for his ideals.

Yeah, because Obama isn’t going to carry Illinois?

    You baggers are geniuses.

  12. good for him! I totally support him and he is right! this is 100% political Obama is trying to buy some good will in a key state for 2012! here’s to hoping Illinois (and the rest of America too) can see through it so that we can get this guy out of office sooner than later!

I give you credit for saying “in my opinion”, but I strongly disagree.

If Obama wanted to honor me for a sporting achievement at the White House, I’d go. I’m sure most people would. But not everyone has to see things the way I do, ergo I support Dan Hampton’s choice not to go if that’s what he wants .

  15. Dan shouldn’t let himself to be used as a stunt for any politician, especially the incompetent presently residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

And why no spouses now? Obammy spent like >$250M on his wife’s vacation to Spain last year. He really is looking out for the little guy!

  16. I guess that makes the rest of the ’85 Bears Obama lovin demercrats. I have no idea how this could be political since Illinois has been a blue state since ’92 and there is little chance of that changing soon.

There are lots of different political opinions in this country which is good. Sacrificing common courtesy to make a political point makes one look very petty. Personally I don’t care who the President is, if he calls me for anything I’m there.

  17. Ahhh, good for you, Dan. It’s nothing more than the guy in the White House getting his picture in the paper, glorifying himself. No matter who the current resident is, it’s 25 years later, its obviously a gratuitous self indulgence on his part.

Besides, Dan gets HIMSELF more media coverage this way too…….just sayin’

That’s a lot of fun. I’d rather pay my own bills than pay my own bills and then yours jack wagon.

  19. I don’t blame him. I wouldn’t jump through my butt to get myself to DC just for the possibility of two minutes of insincere conversation with a politician.
I’d rather talk to John Madden.

“>$250M” = a sign that the person typing has no clue about the actual figure. I didn’t know Michele Bachmann posted on PFT. Please cite a credible source and don’t worry I’ll wait …

  22. Two unfunded wars “charged” on the nation’s credit card combined with tax cuts, and Wall Street allowed to run wild with sub-prime mortgages – all compliments of the former administration … and Hampton isn’t a fan of Obama?

    Wow!

Did this guy play football without a helmet or what???

  23. Leave it to an idiot to make it political. It used to be an honor before a radical black liberation christian, Muslim, foreigner, (did I mention he’s black) guy won the office. Keep it classy Dan.

It still is an honor… when it’s done in the same calendar year.

When it’s done 26 years later, it’s a political stunt.

I’m absolutely certain that if the government has anything to do with it then it will take twice as long for him get service and then ultimately it’ll get all screwed up. The only thing our government does efficiently is collect taxes.

  29. At least Obama has the decency to carry out something that should have been done when a GOP candidate was in office. It is just like a Republican to leave unfinished business. Obama could have told them to piss off. If I was president i would make life hell on this idiot.

  30. Yeah this president was responsible for the near collapse of the auto, real estate, bank, and financial services industry which without government intervention would led to their bankruptcy have cause a depression in this country and the world. This president was also responsible for the invasion of Iraq looking for non existent WMD. I can see why you’re not a fan, Dan! lol

  31. It doesn’t matter who is in office, this country is in big trouble. No manufacturing backbone. Two political parties, so we only get the lesser of two evils. Politicians in the House and Senate have unlimited term limits, so we have “career” politicans. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and the rest of the people who started this country were inventors, entrepreneurs and leaders, not “politicans”. And a military controlled by bureacrats, when it should be controlled by the people and families that end up risking their lives.

  32. I’m not a fan of the current president. In fact, I think he’s doing everything possible to destroy our country (perhaps not on purpose). Still, I would accept an invitation to the White House and consider it an honor to meet the man. That said, if Hampton doesn’t want to go, why should he go? It certainly isn’t un-American to exercise your freedom to associate with who you want. People criticizing him should get a life.

  33. Did he use the logic of, “Oh, that was so long ago. No thanks” when he got inducted into the Hall of Fame? Douche.

  34. After 26 Bear hugs, 4 cracked ribs, 2 bruised and 1 punctured lung, the clearly suffering President opted to clasp the remaining player’s hands with his own, look into their eyes, and kiss them on both cheeks.

One of those wars Obama expanded and got us involved in a third, all by his lonesome. Obama extended those same tax cuts and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are still flooding the market with bad loans, the only difference is they have done so with at least 400 billion of our money!

  36. Been to the White House once for a christmas party, my sister worked there.
Reagan wasn’t there, I met Nancy though.
I can say that Michelle is no Nancy, she’s no Barbara, Hillary or Laura for that matter.
But she does love french fries, So we have that in common.
I think I’d go… if she served french fries.

  37. They won’t miss him. At least there will be players there who will be honored to be at the White House no matter their personal politics.

  38. “obama’s no savior, but at least he’s a lot better than the last guy. how’s those WMDs?”

Isn’t he the guy who was going to close Guantanomo Bay and end the wars? Not only did he do neither, we are now in a THIRD war! Oh yeah, then there’s that whole stimulus thingie with all those “shovel ready” jobs. Why has unemployment went up since we invested 1 TRILLION DOLLARS in stimulating the economy?
All he’s accomplished is exponentially increasing our debt and at the same rate decreasing the value of the dollar. Your guy’s good!

  39. his action and the resulting opinions about it on here really point out the radical change in overall theme for Americans when we face serious problems….

in WWII it was basically “everyone pitch in together and kick ass!”

today it’s “let’s blame the prez / tea party / gop / whatever and wait for someone else to fix it”

we as Americans gotta get back to pitching in together and kicking ass…

  40. “Judging by the likes and dislikes to the comments here I’d say the Comrade in Chief will have a little problem on his hands come next year.”

When did this place turn into Gallup all of a sudden? Idiot.

Dan, its your right and enjoy staying home. I look forward to you bitching moaning about needing healthcare and expensive treatment as you toe the mouth-breathing party line about socialist this, muslim that, tax cut extender (and just whose cuts did he extend…ahhhh, you see??) etc.

Man, if you’d said a lot of this crap a few years back, the rednecks would be at your doors with shotguns yelling about treason. My oh my how the panties get atwist.

  41. WOW!! I had to scroll through all that stupidity to say Hampton has pride! obviously most of the previous posters have no idea what that means!!

  42. Because Dan doesn’t want to go see our DOUCHE bag President does not make him a Racist! Plenty of African American athletes did not want to go see President Bush when he was in office so shut the hell up you idiots….

  43. Actually Dan is missing out on a great opportunity.
Hampton solar panels’ has a nice ring to it.
He could run it by the big O and get the rest of us to pay for it.
    It’s a win win situation

  44. You don’t turn down your championship White House visit just because you dislike the current (p)resident. That’s just assinine grandstanding and the ONLY one being political here is Danimal. One wonders if he was a big Reagan guy back in ’85… I was a 18 year old Bears fan then but Dan Hampton’s political affiliation was one stat I couldn’t have cared less about. And for the record I didn’t care much for Obama when he was my senator and I’m a Ron Paul supporter and have been for years. Ya just don’t turn down your championship White House visit, ya moron.

  45. I am a fan of Barry, but support Hampton’s right to go or not. It’s an INVITATION not a court order.

Not a fan of Ronny Reagan, but understood the circumstances of the ’85 bears not going. It was not anything political, it was the Space Shuttle.

To you Haters, the glass is not always “half empty.” Sometimes it’s just a half glass of water.

  51. Political? Who but a true Bears fan would even remember that they did not go to the White House in 1986 because of the Challenger explosion? I didn’t.

You think Ditka is a fan of the guy in the White House? Hell, be almost ran against Obama for the Senate in Illinois, but he is still going.

Hampton is a twit. Another example of what happens when you try to do something nice for people. No good deed goes unpunished. I hope you have a long wait, Dan, before getting another chance to visit the White House when someone more to your liking is elected. ===============================
Nah. That held water back in the days of J.F.K. , when the President actually stood up for the people against corporate hegomeny. He is well within his rights to refuse a visit. – It isnt a once in a lifetime experience to meet a succession of puppets of corporate finance. Read up on the Council on Foreign Relations. It isnt the patriotic duty for people to acknowledge an Empire that is slowly eroding the country their forefathers built.

I think one would go to honor one’s teammates (esp. Walter Payton) who are no longer with us, and to celebrate the legacy of Chicago, that particular team, etc.

  55. What is with all the race talk? I thought we transcended racism in 2008? Oh that is right, we only are transcended when the Dems are ahead in the polls and we are racist when ever Dems are losing. I need to brush up on my Rules for Radicals.

  56. Yeah, I’m sure those will Bears players
will be taking in the sights of the White
    House, and saying to themselves:

“Damn, this WOULD’VE been cool if
only Dan Hampton were gracing us
    with his presence.”

  57. “He is well within his rights to refuse a visit.”

    Absolutely.

Just as those who say “What a dick move”
    are well within their rights.

  58. Listening to some 0f you posters you would think Rush Limbaugh was making these comments…its effin sports for christ sakes….what the hell does politics have to do with it…..why does he have to make a big deal about not going? If he is not going to show up then don’t. Nobody is going to miss him…..but stop with all the drama queen antics…..f@#kin pu$$y

  59. If it was George W Bush, I would not go. That man should be imprisoned for what he did to this country, helping out his wealthy buddies and pissing on the middle class and soldiers.

What I’m saying is that it’s Dan’s right.

  60. After reading through these comments, I had to check to make sure I was on the Pro Football Talk website, and that I didn’t accidentally end up on the Fox News website.

There are a lot of ignorant, misinformed people out there, that’s all I can say.

  61. What a moron…if athletes only went to the White House when they liked the President, there would have been no visits there during the Bush years. Typical of the “right”…if you don’t like something, take your ball and go home…

  62. Dan Hampton is irrelevant everywhere in the world other than his own home and perhaps parts of Chicago, so who really gives a rat’s ass about anything he says? Put an undeserved HOF ring on some guy’s finger and all of a sudden when he speaks we’re supposed to listen? Give me a break.

  63. At least Hampton has a strong sense of whom he his. Most of the team will be glad to get a free plane ride, free dinner, and the chance to meet the president NO MATTER HOW MUCH HARM OBAMA BRINGS OUR FALTERING COUNTRY. If he doesn’t want to meet the bum at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave he shouldn’t have to, Superbowl winner or not.

  64. It was an “invitation”, not a command performance. He’s a President, not a dictator. Dan is perfectly within his rights to decline. Are those folks who can’t attend also to be considered unpatriotic? Isn’t America still about freedom of choice and freedom of expression? I sure hope so.

you say we have three wars now…oh i see you think Libya is war.The 2011 Libyan civil war, also known as the Libyan Revolution, is an ongoing armed conflict in the North African state of Libya being fought between forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi and his regime and those seeking to depose him.A further U.N. resolution authorized member states to establish and enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. We are a un member and protected a no fly zone…never has a us soldier set foot on their soil. Hell Reagan did more damage to libya in his tenure. So no go on the third war..idiot

Are we out of gitmo…No because your dumbass gop will not allow it. If he sends the prisoners home…you’ll call him soft on terror and we all know you don’t want to put them in Federal Prisons in the US because you dont want them in your backyard. He didn’t start gitmo or the iraq or afghan war…but you sure loved Gitmo when Bushy tail had it.

Did the stimulus create jobs..Did bushy tails tax cuts create jobs, did bushy tails wall street bail out create jobs or save the economy…the answers would all be no. Did Bushy Tails actual real wars that he paid with a blank check put us in a pile of debt…yes

If Solyndra counts..so does Haliburton and Enron.

If there is anything else you need to know just ask me…Ill help you understand

  66. My take on this is that Obama should be trying to create JOBS instead of meeting with 1985 football teams. And if anyone brings up the Jobs bill…LOL. Not too many jobs going to be created with that piece of garbage bill. Between campaigning and partying, when does he LEAD?

  67. Hampton shows what happens to a dumb line man who gets hit up side his head to much. When are in a organization sometimes you go to a lot of things you don’t like the people involved but out of respect for the rest of your group you go.even in the military you don’t always like your commanding officer but you respect his rank if not the man.So Hampton keep your tired behind where ever the hell you are and let the others enjoy and be honored by the President of the United States. So few teams get the honor.

  69. Apparently Hampton has a high profile job as a local tv announcer. He may have used up his sick days?

  70. No one will miss Dan Hampton not being there. It’s not like Mike Ditka, Buddy Ryan, Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary, or even William “The Refrigerator”Perry saying they don’t planned to attend. Hampton’s comments are much ado about nothing. I had forgot all about him anyway — he won’t be the first or last person on a championship team to pass on a White House invitation. Besides, it’s all about recognizing the 1985 Chicago Bears’ championship team — I’m sure the president couldn’t care less if Hampton showed up or not!

  71. @ 2010worldchamppack

    Jeez, shill much?

Of course we have soldiers on the ground in Libya. Who do you think is lighting up a lot of those bombing targets with lasers?

re: UN Resolutions… Several UN Resolutions also affirmed the right of member states to bring Iraq into compliance with applicable UN Resolutions regarding it’s disarmament by any means necessary, but to you it’s an “illegal war”.

re: Gitmo… Obama hasn’t closed Gitmo because he’s never had a plan on how to do it. It was just another empty promise made to get you to vote for him. There are some bad people there and no other country wants them. Maybe you should take them in YOUR backyard if you want them on US soil so bad.

As to the debt and unemployment and all that jazz, Obama has eclipsed Bush on all fronts as far as damage to the country is concerned. Wake up.

  72. Every time I hear Hampton’s name I think about that skit he did long ago where he dressed up as a small child and sang “Animal Crackers in My Soup”.

  73. obama’s no savior, but at least he’s a lot better than the last guy.

Of course you’ll wait, you’ve got nothing better to do than sit on your couch and collect unemployment/welfare.

  75. I can understand why Dan does not want to go.. Maybe he already been on a Tour of the whitehouse. He’s older, doesn’t feel like traveling without his family, and he disagrees with his Obama’s view’s.. He is not obligated to go to the whitehouse. I can’t blame the guy, that what makes him American.. Now back to football please!

  76. Good for him! I’m glad to see someone stadd up for what he believes in. I wouldn’t go either. If Ohbamba came to my house I wouldn’t let him set one foot inside either.

I also agree with the commentor that said we need someone like Herman Cain.

    Cain in 12!

  77. 78. Good for Hampton, standing up for his principles. Why should he feign interest in visiting the worst resident in the nation’s history? Regardless of how the liberal media fawns over Obama, he’s just another mere mortal. And shady Chicago politician to boot. Arguments about respect for the office of the presidency are just meek liberal propaganda.
