Dan Hampton chooses not to go to White House

090810_danhampton AP

On October 7, the 1985 Bears will finally get their long-overdue trip to the White House after winning the Super Bowl.

Some guys, like Panthers coach Ron Rivera, can’t make it due to their current gigs.  Another guy has no conflict, but nevertheless won’t go.

Hall of Famer Dan Hampton told our friends at WSCR that he opted not to accept the invitation.  Hampton said he was irked that the invitation didn’t extend to spouses and children.  “Secondly, I’m not a fan of the guy in the White House, and third, it was 25 years ago,” Hampton said, via USA Today.  “Let it go.”

President Obama, a Bears fan, recently extended the offer, given that the Bears didn’t get a chance to visit the White House.

“It basically just rolled off our backs, and now, 25 years later to say, ‘Let’s put the band back together,'” Hampton said.  “No, I’m not in.”

That’s his prerogative.  We’ve got a feeling that the main reason is that Hampton isn’t a “fan” of Obama.  Which also is his prerogative.  Still, if anyone from the ’85 Bears was going to take such a grumpy-old-man stance, we would have guessed that it would have been their head coach.

Whether you like or dislike the President, he is the leader of the country, and getting invited to the White House to meet him should be considered an honor and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Personal feelings and stances should be set aside, in my opinion.

Too bad for him. Who cares if you are a fan or not of the man. He is at this time, The President of the United States of America. The office itself should be respected as well as the generous offer itself. The team will probably have a great time just being there. I am sure there are a lot of fans in that White House.

  13. ironhawk says: Sep 28, 2011 8:40 PM

He’s not a fan eh? Would he rather the alternative, and the tea party comes into power? I hope he’ll be happy in a few years when his football injuries catch up to him and he’s desperately calling 911 for help, and they transfer him to their sales department so he can discuss which payment plan he’d like to enroll in.

Dan Hampton is a complete jack ass…..what does ideology have to do with having your team honored in the white house? I’m pretty sure of all the championship teams that visit the whitehouse, everyone is’nt always a fan of the sitting president…smh

I give you credit for saying “in my opinion”, but I strongly disagree.

If Obama wanted to honor me for a sporting achievement at the White House, I’d go. I’m sure most people would. But not everyone has to see things the way I do, ergo I support Dan Hampton’s choice not to go if that’s what he wants .

I guess that makes the rest of the ’85 Bears Obama lovin demercrats. I have no idea how this could be political since Illinois has been a blue state since ’92 and there is little chance of that changing soon.

There are lots of different political opinions in this country which is good. Sacrificing common courtesy to make a political point makes one look very petty. Personally I don’t care who the President is, if he calls me for anything I’m there.

It doesn’t matter who is in office, this country is in big trouble. No manufacturing backbone. Two political parties, so we only get the lesser of two evils. Politicians in the House and Senate have unlimited term limits, so we have “career” politicans. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and the rest of the people who started this country were inventors, entrepreneurs and leaders, not “politicans”. And a military controlled by bureacrats, when it should be controlled by the people and families that end up risking their lives.

One of those wars Obama expanded and got us involved in a third, all by his lonesome. Obama extended those same tax cuts and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are still flooding the market with bad loans, the only difference is they have done so with at least 400 billion of our money!

Whether you like or dislike the President, he is the leader of the country, and getting invited to the White House to meet him should be considered an honor and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
    ===============================
Nah. That held water back in the days of J.F.K. , when the President actually stood up for the people against corporate hegomeny. He is well within his rights to refuse a visit. – It isnt a once in a lifetime experience to meet a succession of puppets of corporate finance. Read up on the Council on Foreign Relations. It isnt the patriotic duty for people to acknowledge an Empire that is slowly eroding the country their forefathers built.

I think one would go to honor one’s teammates (esp. Walter Payton) who are no longer with us, and to celebrate the legacy of Chicago, that particular team, etc.

  83. southpaw79 says: Sep 29, 2011 12:20 AM

What is with all the race talk? I thought we transcended racism in 2008? Oh that is right, we only are transcended when the Dems are ahead in the polls and we are racist when ever Dems are losing. I need to brush up on my Rules for Radicals.

If he is not going to show up then don’t. Nobody is going to miss him…..but stop with all the drama queen antics…..f@#kin pu$$y

  91. therabiddog says: Sep 29, 2011 2:55 AM

If it was George W Bush, I would not go. That man should be imprisoned for what he did to this country, helping out his wealthy buddies and pissing on the middle class and soldiers.

What I’m saying is that it’s Dan’s right.

  95. Sandra Lee's Cans says: Sep 29, 2011 5:18 AM

Dan Hampton is irrelevant everywhere in the world other than his own home and perhaps parts of Chicago, so who really gives a rat’s ass about anything he says? Put an undeserved HOF ring on some guy’s finger and all of a sudden when he speaks we’re supposed to listen? Give me a break.

  96. effjohntaylornorelation says: Sep 29, 2011 5:49 AM

At least Hampton has a strong sense of whom he his. Most of the team will be glad to get a free plane ride, free dinner, and the chance to meet the president NO MATTER HOW MUCH HARM OBAMA BRINGS OUR FALTERING COUNTRY. If he doesn’t want to meet the bum at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave he shouldn’t have to, Superbowl winner or not.

  97. texaswriter2011 says: Sep 29, 2011 5:57 AM

It was an “invitation”, not a command performance. He’s a President, not a dictator. Dan is perfectly within his rights to decline. Are those folks who can’t attend also to be considered unpatriotic? Isn’t America still about freedom of choice and freedom of expression? I sure hope so.

Two unfunded wars “charged” on the nation’s credit card combined with tax cuts, and Wall Street allowed to run wild with sub-prime mortgages – all compliments of the former administration … and Hampton isn’t a fan of Obama?

We have three wars now, moron!
Are we out of Gitmo, or did Obama lie?
Did the trillion dollar stimulus create jobs?
    Solyndra doesn’t count.
Not even liberals like Obama anymore.
    Only loons.≥… π¬

    _______________________________

you say we have three wars now…oh i see you think Libya is war.The 2011 Libyan civil war, also known as the Libyan Revolution, is an ongoing armed conflict in the North African state of Libya being fought between forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi and his regime and those seeking to depose him.A further U.N. resolution authorized member states to establish and enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. We are a un member and protected a no fly zone…never has a us soldier set foot on their soil. Hell Reagan did more damage to libya in his tenure. So no go on the third war..idiot

Are we out of gitmo…No because your dumbass gop will not allow it. If he sends the prisoners home…you’ll call him soft on terror and we all know you don’t want to put them in Federal Prisons in the US because you dont want them in your backyard. He didn’t start gitmo or the iraq or afghan war…but you sure loved Gitmo when Bushy tail had it.

Did the stimulus create jobs..Did bushy tails tax cuts create jobs, did bushy tails wall street bail out create jobs or save the economy…the answers would all be no. Did Bushy Tails actual real wars that he paid with a blank check put us in a pile of debt…yes

If Solyndra counts..so does Haliburton and Enron.

If there is anything else you need to know just ask me…Ill help you understand

  99. bonniebengal says: Sep 29, 2011 6:39 AM

My take on this is that Obama should be trying to create JOBS instead of meeting with 1985 football teams. And if anyone brings up the Jobs bill…LOL. Not too many jobs going to be created with that piece of garbage bill. Between campaigning and partying, when does he LEAD?

  100. 1historian says: Sep 29, 2011 7:00 AM

  101. wesleya17 says: Sep 29, 2011 7:03 AM

Hampton shows what happens to a dumb line man who gets hit up side his head to much. When are in a organization sometimes you go to a lot of things you don’t like the people involved but out of respect for the rest of your group you go.even in the military you don’t always like your commanding officer but you respect his rank if not the man.So Hampton keep your tired behind where ever the hell you are and let the others enjoy and be honored by the President of the United States. So few teams get the honor.

No one will miss Dan Hampton not being there. It’s not like Mike Ditka, Buddy Ryan, Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary, or even William “The Refrigerator”Perry saying they don’t planned to attend. Hampton’s comments are much ado about nothing. I had forgot all about him anyway — he won’t be the first or last person on a championship team to pass on a White House invitation. Besides, it’s all about recognizing the 1985 Chicago Bears’ championship team — I’m sure the president couldn’t care less if Hampton showed up or not!

    Jeez, shill much?

Of course we have soldiers on the ground in Libya. Who do you think is lighting up a lot of those bombing targets with lasers?

re: UN Resolutions… Several UN Resolutions also affirmed the right of member states to bring Iraq into compliance with applicable UN Resolutions regarding it’s disarmament by any means necessary, but to you it’s an “illegal war”.

re: Gitmo… Obama hasn’t closed Gitmo because he’s never had a plan on how to do it. It was just another empty promise made to get you to vote for him. There are some bad people there and no other country wants them. Maybe you should take them in YOUR backyard if you want them on US soil so bad.

As to the debt and unemployment and all that jazz, Obama has eclipsed Bush on all fronts as far as damage to the country is concerned. Wake up.

He’s older, doesn’t feel like traveling without his family, and he disagrees with his Obama’s view’s.. He is not obligated to go to the whitehouse. I can’t blame the guy, that what makes him American.. Now back to football please!

  114. KeepitReal says: Sep 29, 2011 3:05 PM

Yeah this president was responsible for the near collapse of the auto, real estate, bank, and financial services industry which without government intervention would led to their bankruptcy and have caused a depression in this country and the world. This president was also responsible for the invasion of Iraq looking for non existent WMD. I can see why you’re not a fan, Dan! lol

  116. nflpasux says: Oct 7, 2011 11:54 AM

Good for Hampton, standing up for his principles. Why should he feign interest in visiting the worst resident in the nation’s history? Regardless of how the liberal media fawns over Obama, he’s just another mere mortal. And shady Chicago politician to boot. Arguments about respect for the office of the presidency are just meek liberal propaganda.
