Rex Ryan mad at ref over Wilkerson’s flag and Sanchez’s nose

Rex Ryan AP

In Sunday’s Jets-Raiders game, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez got his nose broken by Raiders linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. In the same game, Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell got bumped in the shoulder by Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson.

Wilkerson was flagged for roughing the passer. Wimbley was not called for a penalty. Jets coach Rex Ryan was not happy about that.

“I’m not sure on that one,” Ryan said. “Our guy gets a bloody, broken nose, I don’t think there was a flag.”

Ryan was left wondering how referee Gene Steratore didn’t throw the flag on Wimbley for hitting Sanchez in the face. Said Ryan sarcastically, “I think he must have gotten hit in the chest and broke his nose.”

As for the Wilkerson hit, Ryan looked incredulous on the sideline when it was flagged, although he had calmed down a little bit after the game, saying only, “I personally never thought it was roughing the quarterback.”

Ryan is obviously biased in favor of his own team, but plenty of unbiased observers agree with him. Phil Simms of CBS said, “I can’t believe it” when looking at the replay of the penalty during the game broadcast. And Mike Pereira of FOX wrote, “I don’t blame Rex Ryan for being upset, that wasn’t roughing the passer.”

Ryan is right to be upset about those two calls. I’d bet on the league office fining Wimbley, not fining Wilkerson, and telling Steratore he screwed up.

And on the roughing the passer call, the Raiders also got a horrible call for intentional grounding…so it was a wash.

Steratore knew he made a ridiculous call on the roughing the passer, so he had his crew make up a penalty on the Raiders so they would offset.

Rex is just pissed that the Raiders literally punched them in the mouth…just shut up already.

  2. ghost072 says: Sep 28, 2011 11:20 AM

I’m a Raider fan and the call on Wilkerson was definitely BS. He barely touched Campbell. I didn’t see the hit on Sanchez that resulted in the broken nose, but just because it broke his nose, doesn’t mean it was dirty or an offense that deserves a fine. Anyone have video of the hit?

I wonder if the NFL is hating Periera right about now for pointing out how bad things are. We always knew the refs sucked, but now there is a recent insider who is verifying and airing the leagues laundry.

  10. mcl2177 says: Sep 28, 2011 11:25 AM

I saw that play when Wilkerson shoved Campbell. I was a horrible call. I thought Vick was wrong when he said some hits he took should have been flagged but when compared to this play he has a point. The NFL needs to get more consistent with their call.

  11. radrntn says: Sep 28, 2011 11:26 AM

buy some kleenex, so rex can dry his eyes, and sanchez can wipe the blood from his busted nose.

Bottom line there were two horrible penalties on the same play, on both teams that offset them both. This had zero impact on the game.

  12. twitter:Chapman_Jamie says: Sep 28, 2011 11:26 AM

Let’s ignore the fact that this is Rex Ryan and the media’s attempt to make him and the Jets bigger than they actually are. The general theme to this point is that there is absolutely not consistency with this year’s officiating. Regardless if it’s roughing the passer or hitting a defenseless receiver, the calls are pure garbage. If there was ever proof that full time officials were required, this season is it.

  13. mypackersownyourteam says: Sep 28, 2011 11:27 AM

Before we talk about the Jets thinking they are better than they are, some of you need to get a grip about the Raiders..

The NFL better not fine Wimbley. If the QB lowers his head of the level of the defenders waist and get hit then it is his fault. If Wimbley goes any lower then he will be at the legs, which is illegal.

Lets just play 2 hand touch. This is starting to really bother me.

That roughing call on Wilkerson was bogus, but it was offset. I thought Sanchez got his face cut and his nose broke by ducking into the tackle, but it doesn’t matter. What matters is the losing coach is whining.

  34. melikefootball says: Sep 28, 2011 12:08 PM

I seem to remember watching a tall QB last year get his nose busted and then retuned to game to have hit again and the refs didn’t even offer him their flag to wipe off the BLOOD. Nice try REX.

  35. edgerocks says: Sep 28, 2011 12:09 PM

All this complaining about the refs, and about Sanchez’ nose is coming from a man whose father, Buddy Ryan was the Head Coach of the Eagles when that team just DECIMATED the Washington Readskins in the infamous “Body Bag” game. Many of those Skins players suffered worse injuries than a broken nose.

Rex: this is football, not a garden party.

  37. crazysandude says: Sep 28, 2011 12:11 PM

It was obviously a bad call.

So obvious that someone from the NFL brass called down to the field to negate the penalty with the intentional grounding call against the Raiders.

So essentially the NFL cleaned up their own mess. It certainly didn’t affect the outcome of the game. Cromartie sealed the fate of the Jets all by himself.

I’m with BigAl…Sanchez tried to get into a fetal postion as Wimbley tackled him, and his hand inadvertantly went into Sanchez’s facemask, the referee was behind the play and would not have seen the penetration of the hand through the facemask…

On the Wilkerson play, he meekly pushed Campbell, but it was well after the pass had been thrown and Wilkerson took extra steps to get there…are we supposed to give the referees judgement on how much damage a hit made as well as enforcing the roughing the passer rule…and as mentioned the ball went over the head of an eligible receiver, and Campbell was not throwing the ball away as the pressure was not even close, and they offset the “real” (even though wimpy) roughing the passer call with a bogus call for intentional grounding…

  45. benchillada says: Sep 28, 2011 12:19 PM

I saw that play that was the WORST roughing the passer call ever. It sucks for sure, but the Jets were not going to win the game anyway.

Kudos to Raiders for putting a full 60 minute effort vs. Jets. Now lets see if the Raiders can continue to improve or fade to the background like past years.

As for the Jets, 2-1 ok, but they have a hell of a lot of work to do. Jets MUST win one of next two games vs. AFC elite Ravens and Patriots.

  54. tackleberries says: Sep 28, 2011 12:42 PM

And on the roughing the passer call, the Raiders also got a horrible call for intentional grounding…so it was a wash.

    —————————————–
I agree the intentional grounding call was bs, and maybe even a make up, but to say it’s a wash is incorrect.

I believe (without going back to the game) it was 1st and 10. Incomplete pass with no flags makes it 2nd and 10. Offsetting fouls means you replay the down. 1st and 10. Advantage: Raiders.

  55. edgerocks says: Sep 28, 2011 12:45 PM

Ngata should have gotta a flag in that Ravens game against the Steelers. NFL even said so. However, I find it funny that a son of Buddy “Body bag Game” Ryan is complaining about his QB having a broken nose and the refs.

  57. tdk24 says: Sep 28, 2011 12:50 PM

If he hit Campbell late, then it’s late. Let’s get this straight, the refs are not in the business of judging how hard a hit was. It’s either legal or illegal. Not, hard or too hard.

  58. nuclearwarfare says: Sep 28, 2011 12:53 PM

The Jets lose one game and the world is apparently ending, or something.

It’s amazing how many Jets fans, and clearly the Jets themselves, felt that they should walk all over the Raiders. When that didn’t happen, it’s a big controversy.

The Raiders may not win next week, but they aren’t going to go down without making the Pats earn it.

These aren’t your regular bottom-feeding Raiders anymore. If Davis doesn’t do something stupid, like firing Hue Jackson, then watch out a year or two from now. The Raiders will be great.

  59. pleasantsurpriselefty says: Sep 28, 2011 12:54 PM

Holmes had 1 catch and we limited the TE (his name is slipping me, but he is very good). They adjusted and stopped the bootleg, did the refs do that? No the coaching staff did. The DB’s checked the WR off their routes and distrupted ther routes. They took there aggression penelties, which I am fine with.

    > Huh? They Raiders were penalized more than the Jets. Get a clue.

Which would explain why we had more than double your yardage and you couldn’t BUY a first down.

    *******************************************
    NYJ pen/ yards 7-61
    OAK pen / yards 7-55

    NYJ total yards 439
    OAK total yards 383

    OAK 23

    RAIDER FAQHIN NATION!

    ==============================

Raiders fans should calm down a little bit. You DO realize this was only ONE game, and there is still a whole season left, right?

Long-time PFT readers are going to be having a good ole’ time after your next loss. You, on the other hand, will probably not even be here for it.

Plain and simple, the Raiders will beat the Patsy’s Sunday. No bragg, just fact!

    Late…

And with this Rex has officially become the bully who runs crying to the prinipal when he picks on the wrong kid and gets a fat lip.

    @ 2sloweggroll
“Come out on Sunday and beat the Ravens, like the
    Raiders did to the Jets.”

By getting offensively dominated for half the game until repeated ref calls allow us to score, all the while getting away with repeated penalties on offense?

Do you read what you write? Excuses are for losers. Halftime adjustments are for winners. You suffered an early loss to a team that used to suck ass but is now getting better. It happens. Whining about it makes you look like a bitch.

As a long time Raider fan, indulge me for a moment. The season is far to young for me to start “crowning” any team, especially my beloved Raiders. What I like is that they are young, they have the right coach and for the first time in a long time, a coach is not coming to the team with a lot of veterans who can’t change old habits. The team is buying into what Jackson is selling and as time goes, we’ll see if they are up to the task. Many times the season is too long for a lot of teams, so the jury is still out.

Now the Jets. This team has been talking trash for 3 years running. We get the annual “This year we are going to win the Superbowl” talk. That’s all well and good, but when the coach talks a big game and the players follow suit, you can’t complain when you lose. The two just don’t go together. Take your lumps and keep it moving.

In conclusion, the Raiders have proven nothing yet. Check with me in late November and December and if we are still in the hunt, then we have something to really talk about. Until then, it’s all posturing!!!!!

I don’t get half of you guys. You whinge and cry and moan and bawl because Belichick says nothing the the media and is a ‘boring robot’ yet you won’t shut the eff up jumping on rex because he talks trash. I’d far rather listen to Rex and laugh at his BS than be bored by athletes.

    Sort it out.

I thought Jarvis Moss hit Sanchez, either way the Raiders are going to break pretty boy Brady’s face this weekend
    *******

So Brady is your type of guy? Interesting.

Rex boasts when the Jets pop Eli Manning’s helmet off, watching it blow away like so many spores. . .but when his “hotdog” quarterback gets a little shiner he has to cry.

Nothing about the 171 yards DMAC got on his own; or the 234 yards the Raiders (and three ground touchdowns) rang up on the Jets.

I’m so sick of Rex; his comments regarding Joe Namath’s critique were those of a blowhard whom NEVER played the game; what does he know? If Joe can still sling it, we’ll make him the backup; look, Sexy Rexy; you talk big but when you don’t even make it into the playoffs this year you’re (already starting to slip) credability will take a HUGE (deserved) hit. Can’t wait. Just because you’re a Ryan (your dad did it; twice!)

I don’t know what’s more hilarious, Rex whining, or all the Jets fans pouting about making excuses. Sorry Jets fans, your team got their butts kicked. The game wasn’t even as close as the score would indicate, as your Jets got owned in the second half. Your boys lost as a team. It was the refs, or one single players fault. Your team got beat by a tougher football team.

Sadly what’s lost in all of this, is that Sanchez played with a broken nose for a little over a quarter of football. No, the hit wasn’t illegal, and no flag should have been thrown. The guy does deserve some credit for manning up and staying in the game though.

The Wilkerson roughing the passer call was seriously bad, but the refs made up for it with a B.S. call to offset everything.
