Casey Matthews, Kurt Coleman demoted in Philly

Cleveland Browns v Philadelphia Eagles Getty Images

So much for Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo saying Philly will keep the same starting linebackers this week.

Philadelphia has made a change; they will send rookie Casey Matthews to the bench. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, taking a break from his burgeoning boxing career, reports Brian Rolle will replace Matthews in the starting lineup.

Matthews has looked like a weak link since the preseason. The team moved him from the middle to the weak side against the Giants, and that didn’t work out well.  Jamar Chaney will start middle linebacker, and Moise Fokou will stay at strong side.

The Eagles will also make a change at safety. Nate Allen will replace Kurt Coleman in the starting lineup.  Coleman gave up a big play last week to the Giants, but Allen also struggled when he entered the lineup.

As for McLane, there has been no word of a possible rematch with fellow reporter Les Bowen despite Asante Samuel’s attempt to egg on the situation.

    Bust.

  2. cardiovascularendurance says: Sep 29, 2011 9:48 AM

Here’s to hoping they cut Matthews next week. And Nate Allen may still be recovering from that kneecap repair, but at least he can tackle; something that Coleman seemed physically incapable of doing whatsoever last week.

  3. joetoronto says: Sep 29, 2011 9:49 AM

They should change the DC. That crazy idea for a DL just isn’t working, and for good reason.

    WTF?

    Dream team.

  5. gprnutrition says: Sep 29, 2011 9:51 AM

They should have demoted him since camp!! How stupid are the Eagles? Just because his brother is a good player DOES NOT mean he is too – the film doesn’t lie!
Eagles just wanted publicity for when Philly and Green Bay play each other.

  6. kevinfromphilly says: Sep 29, 2011 9:56 AM

Well, all it takes is losing two winnable games to get Andy to admit he’s wrong. Sometimes it’s REALLY hard to be a fan of this team.

  7. rpiotr01 says: Sep 29, 2011 9:57 AM

Casey Matthews really should be in the process of developing into a good back-up LB and a core special teams player. Instead, due to lack of depth and proper foresight by the DC in Philly, he was thrust into a starting role that he’s likely never to be able to handle full time.

Having an older brother like Clay in the league at the same time as you can be as much a curse as a blessing.

  8. scoops1 says: Sep 29, 2011 9:59 AM

Does Juan Castillo even have a clue???

  9. pbm984 says: Sep 29, 2011 10:01 AM

Reason Number 813 why you don’t hire an offensive line coach as your defensive coordinator.

  10. pbm984 says: Sep 29, 2011 10:04 AM

Seriously, where else but Philly do you see all the linebackers changing roles one week, then several starters getting benched the next week. Its almost like Castillo has no clue how to coordinate a defense. Oh wait, he doesn’t. Why wasnt Andy Ried fired on the spot for hiring an offensive line coach to run the defense.

Brian Rolle > Casey Matthews should be an upgrade despite Rolle being undersized (London Fletcher). Youtube the Eagles Vs. Rams and watch how Rolle steps up and demolishes the center and then makes the tackle. Casey struggled with shedding blocks. Rolle is also faster and stronger only time will tell. Allen for Coleman is a no brainer IF Allen is 100% which he hasnt looked unless that has a lot to do with being hesitant after a major knee injury. Should be interesting to see if this will help.

  15. scudbot says: Sep 29, 2011 10:10 AM

I feel bad for Casey. Being tossed into the midst of a mediocre LB corps as a starter while having a rookie DC who only has O experience can’t be doing him any good.

  16. gallaghedj311 says: Sep 29, 2011 10:10 AM

Cmon Eagles fans, we all know that Andy Reids teams start off slow and finish strong. Last place after 3 games means divisional champs…..yet again. In Andy I trust!

Looks like some one will be sitting at the kids table come Thanksgiving at the Mathews.

  21. We'reFineThere says: Sep 29, 2011 10:17 AM

Rolle > Matthews but I don’t know if there is an answer at safety. Nate Allen is still injured, terrible or both. If Alex Smith can beat him over the top we are going to be real trouble going forward.

  22. hunternuts says: Sep 29, 2011 10:20 AM

How is Rolle going to stop anyone? Fletcher is undersized because he’s short. He’s still 245lbs. He’s also smarter than 99% of all LBs out there. This kid is 220lbs, he should be a safety, not a LB. He’s also a rookie. The Eagles spent all this money on FAs and completely neglected LBs. Isn’t Lofa still out there?

  23. eaglesnoles05 says: Sep 29, 2011 10:22 AM

Allen is definitely hesitating trusting that knee. He was a budding superstar rookie saftey, rememeber. He needs to be out there shaking the rust off, not on the bench. It’ll help nate allen continue to develop, and therefore it’ll help the eagles. Coleman and Mathews can both go ball on special teams and help us there too.

  24. joegibbsisking says: Sep 29, 2011 10:24 AM

Either Lofa Tatupu has transformed into a straight up bum overnight, or he banged Andy Reid’s niece or something. He is available and I figured a team with LBs as poor as the Eagles would at least give him a shot.

  25. jeffro33 says: Sep 29, 2011 10:26 AM

This is because Casey Matthews and Kurt Coleman both SUCK… End of story.

I am still SHOCKED that Andy Reid FAILED YET AGAIN with a top pick in a draft… The pick in 2010 was clearly EARL THOMAS, but he went for a Jerome McDougle clone followed by an overmatched Nate Allen.

Reid’s picks?? PUP list and backup…. Thomas? All-Pro as a rookie.

So SICK of Andy Reid. Winning coach, great… But what is success?

PS – this “dream team” bs makes me hate VY more and more…

  26. pkrjones says: Sep 29, 2011 10:28 AM

Matthews is a rookie, 4th round draft pick…only the idiot Eagle’s coaches thought he was ready ~ the fans knew otherwise. Give the kid time to develop and learn the pro-game before proclaiming him a bust.

  27. nannymcsack says: Sep 29, 2011 10:30 AM

    “wide 9″ hahaha

  28. caseysarasota says: Sep 29, 2011 10:50 AM

FINALLY! and the wide 9 can work if the middle 3 were good…lol. Lets see what Rolle does, ive been impressed by him so far. We can’t cry over spilled milk at this point..at least they are TRYING to make this team better, all be it 4 months after the entire Philadelphia fan base said to switch out backers…but still..the birds are trying. Im still hoping for a good season..if the O-Line continues to gel, this move with the backers at least takes us from bad to decent…i think we have a shot at a good season. Heres to Brian Rolle being the new guy in the spotlight! Please make all the fans who called for Matthews demise look good!

  29. pigskinswag says: Sep 29, 2011 10:51 AM

For the life of me, I don’t know why there’s a revolving door at MLB when Lofa Tatupu is available. The reality is their signing spree in free agency should have included retaining Stewart Bradley and Ernie Sims.

  30. rajbais says: Sep 29, 2011 10:52 AM

You know what is so stupid about the Eagles???

Teams like the Titans, Texans, 49ers, ad maybe a few others had intentions to go to the playoffs regardless of the changes in coaching staffs!!!

Shouldn’t Andy Reid have cared about getting his players to win at any cost than name an offensive staff member who “sorta” worked with Jim Johnson as the defensive coordinator???

If the Eagles win no playoff games or miss the postseason, Andy Reid should be fired!!! Enough is enough!!!

  31. coys10 says: Sep 29, 2011 10:54 AM

  32. alaricsrevenge says: Sep 29, 2011 11:00 AM

Lofa’s on the sofa with an injury, that’s why NO TEAM has picked him up yet. Also why haven’t the Eagles looked at Darren Sharper at Safety?

I still think Dahani Jones is worth a look at this point.

  33. alaricsrevenge says: Sep 29, 2011 11:02 AM

    Every Eagle fan knows …

    they are re-building the D.
This is the 2nd year ..and with all the draft picks , we acquired,,in another year the D will be very good.

    The Media ..
are the only ones with the
    “stupid rhetoric” -“Dream Team”.

The only problem is .. if / when the Eagles, end up having a better record than your team … Just imagine how bad your team really is ?

thinking your team is going somewhere.

The Eagles decision making hit a new height of questionable this year.
    Sign Vick long term.
    Trade Kolb.
    Cut Bradley.
    Start Matthews.
    Etc.

  42. terrellblowens says: Sep 29, 2011 11:29 AM

Also Brian Rolle has much more potential than Matthews. He’s physical, can cover, can tackle, can blitz, and has speed and instincts. Matthews had none of that. I’m not saying Rolle will be a star but he’s an upgrade from Matthews

  43. theharshestreality says: Sep 29, 2011 11:34 AM

Actually, an Eagles QB (VY), not the media, started the “Dream Team” frenzy. So, give credit where it is due. But, it is being perpetuated to the nth degree by the media though.

  44. phillychzstk2012 says: Sep 29, 2011 11:35 AM

do you really think coaches and co-ordinators are going to tell the truth 100% of the time? they hate the media (aka you) they dont feel the need to digress every single little detail about roster transactions just so you can come up with some big headline. Brian rolle was excellent in coverage last week and is soo underrated because of his height. what i want to know is WHERE IS JAIQUAWN JARRETT!!?! seriously he’s a second round pick this year and is the only Eagles DB that seems fully capable of tackling and bringing some pain to the secondary. Holy crap put him in how much worse could it be.

  45. letemsoar says: Sep 29, 2011 11:36 AM

How about try Kurt Coleman as a LB? it’s worth a try. you cant get much worse with philly’s LBs. also, i like nate allen starting, time to put jaiquawn jarrett in for jarred page and philly’s secondary is better. jarrett rarely misses tackles, and he has an act for coming up big.

  46. Tim says: Sep 29, 2011 11:38 AM

They should give Jaiquawn Jarrett a shot at safety if Nate Allen is still struggling from his injury last season. I’d love to see what the kid can do, he was a beast at TU.

  47. fatfreddystubbs says: Sep 29, 2011 11:44 AM

Philadelphia sure seems to get the wrong end of the gene pool when it comes to brothers (“brothers” meaning siblings in this case.)

We’ve had George Brett’s brother, Greg Maddux’ brother, Clay Matthews brother, Jason Giambi’s brother.

Well, at least we got the better end of the Lindros and Vick families.

  49. favreforever says: Sep 29, 2011 11:48 AM

McLane/Bowen is believed to be the first fight between media members which did not involve free food, drinks, or merchandise and a lineup, in the history of sport.

  50. phillyfan4ever says: Sep 29, 2011 11:49 AM

    You people are all idiots.

This is a brand new team, with all new players, coaches and no training camp. As i have said before they are not going to find what works until week 5ish.

So all you fools who are jumping ship/calling for heads to roll are not only premature but uneducated. The eagles are notorious for starting late, check their history.

Wait until they hit their stride, and roll into the playoffs, when the “Dream Team” lays it on you.

  51. favreforever says: Sep 29, 2011 11:51 AM

As it turns out, the McLane/Bowen confrontation was just another case of the short, potbellied reporter calling the stout, kettle shaped reporter “a hack”.

  52. favreforever says: Sep 29, 2011 11:55 AM

Jeff McLane chose to take the high road about the media room dust up. “Texts and tweets may squeeze my stones, but old man punches cannot harm me.”.

  53. snaponrules says: Sep 29, 2011 11:55 AM

  54. orakpownd says: Sep 29, 2011 12:07 PM

Do Not mention London Fletcher’s name with any of these so called LB’s. Also for the “its a new team” line…..they better get that solved quick because alot of these “new” guys seem to be on one year contracts….with a looming salary cap on the horizon.

  55. jtbaudendistel says: Sep 29, 2011 12:10 PM

Dude was a 4th round pick and is a rookie. He should be a roll player not the starting middle backer.

    Say what you want …

but the ‘truth” is, besides Reid ..
the Eagles actually have some good coaches.

this is why ..they rid themselves of Reid’s lower draft picks. (injured players looking to get healthy).

plenty of 2012 draft selections and salary cap space.

You give up the middle at the LOS and just get shredded.

Plus, I’m still not sold on Castillo as a D Coordinator…. He should’ve known that he doesnt have the personal for this gimmick defense and should be playing a more traditional 4-3 defense and cover up your LB’s. Give them a chance to utilize their speed by not having to go man up with the O line.
