49ers offensive line boldly proclaims: “We don’t suck”

The 49ers haven’t been able to run the ball this year.  They’ve struggled to protect Alex Smith.

Their offensive line was supposed to be the foundation to the team, but it hasn’t worked out that way so far.

“Contrary to everyone’s belief, we don’t suck,” tackle Staley said via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. “We’re good players and we play well. It comes down to everybody executing. It takes all 11 guys. It doesn’t take five offensive linemen to make a running play go.”

Staley goes on to talk about all the other components of a running play.  Whoever is at fault, the 49ers can improve on things this week.

The Eagles don’t scare you as a run-stopping team, so we expect to see plenty of Kendall Hunter playing behind banged-up starter Frank Gore. Staley and friends could struggle to pass protect against Trent Cole, Jason Babin, and company.

Staley must be from Brazil since he has no first name. Nice work Rosenthal.

  2. Taking their motto from and old ad campaign, the boys rally each other with “We’re number thirty-two so we try harder!”.

  3. Staley needs to keep quiet and focus on improving his game. Quit yappin to the media about how good you are or aren’t. Prove your worth on the field.

  4. Not worried too much on the oline. As the season goes we should see improvement. For not having much of a off season the team has played the best with a new coach at the helm.

  5. No staley, you are right, the whole unit doesnt suck, just you and rachal. You are an over rated player that just plain and simple SUCKS! I dont remember a game where you didnt commit a holding, a false start or allowed a sack.. there is always something …YOU SUCK!

  6. Frank Gore is averaging 2.5 yards a pop.

Alex Smith has been sacked 11 times in the past 2 games.

When Smith isn’t getting sacked he’s running for his life immediately after the taking the snap.

Sorry, Joe. That whole unit stinks and you’re playing the worst out of all 5 starters.

  7. No, in 80% of the cases the OL is at fault.

10% if a QB doensn’t recognize a blitz and 10% if the RB messes up.

I play RT and we take pride in blocking for our RBs and if we can’t run the ball, we are the ones to blame usually.

    Get better, stop bitchin’…

  8. for a line with (open to correction) 3 first round picks – staley iupati davis ( latter two only last years draft), the perfromance is abysmal, they should not only be saying they don’t suck, they should be a dominant line in the league! And yes as a steeler fan commenting on a different offensive line not named the bears, i recognise the whole pot meet kettle irony but i hope with pouncey and co, the dark days of bens routine sunday murder are behind us.

  9. If Tackle Staley isn’t going to take responsibility, he needs to point the finger accurately. Is it the receivers and/or the tight ends? Is your crappy quarterback taking too long to hand off the ball? Do your backs suck?

  10. i think hes clearly stating that Gore is the problem. thats what i read in between the lines. and he does have a point. although the line hasnt been great, it hasnt been terrible. they are weaker in pass protection than in the run game yet they arent getting any production on the ground.

is the line good? nope. terrible? nope. the QB has been doing his job too, so you cant go there with Alex Smith even though hes the easy target.

  11. No, they don’t suck…now the Bears’ O line…there’s a line that SUCKS! I challenge Frank Omigod to play one single game without a false start penalty!

  12. As a long time fan my considered opinion is that they are awful. Bill Walsh had better offensive lines with waiver wire pick ups and an obese tackle named Bubba Paris.

I can’t name 6 players on that team who DON’T suck.

Let me help with 7 to get you started. Patrick Willis, Vernon Davis, Kendall Hunter, Frank Gore, Ahmed Brooks, Andy Lee and David Akers

  14. Die hard-plus Niner here. I beg your pardon, sir. Except for the Center, you’re the same bunch from last two seasons – and with continuity in coaching, but still you’re digressing from one game to the next. True its about a collective effort, but you five are not getting any movement up front. Not any. And you are stale mated cold at the line snap after snap. Who is that on really? Inquiring minds want to know. Alex will not last the season. No way.

You, sir, are wrong. Anthony Davis also sucks!

That leaves Iupati and Goodwin as being the only decent starting O-Linemen.

Hope Rachal is on the bench this week and Snyder starts in his place. Wish we still had Sims or Wragge!

  16. “We’re good players and we play well. It comes down to everybody executing. It takes all 11 guys. It doesn’t take five offensive linemen to make a running play go.”

Alright he may have a point here…but it does take five offensive linemen to protect a QB and at 11 sack in 3 games this season Alex Smith thinks you suck too.

  17. Prove it on the field.

A formerly stellar running game now averaging 2.5 yards per carry?

Giving up 11 sacks and 17 hits on the QB in TWO games?

Alex Smith has a rating of 91.3 with a completion percentage of 68.9%. The defense is even better then it was last year, ranked 3rd with the run and 4th with points allowed.

It actually sounds like everyone is doing their job EXCEPT the offensive line.

Stop talking and prove it on the field. In the games I’ve been able to watch the Offensive Line has been an embarrassment.

  18. It is time for the Eagles to start the new era of football dominance. Bow down to Philly all of you ugly smelly pukes.

Gore hasnt impressed me this season. watched game against Seattle saw some running plays where Gore could have cut outside but he chose to run into the back of his O-linemen. its like he’s got tunnel vision.

  20. yup, biggie900. i record every game and i always go back to watch it so i can review it and break it down. the line has opened holes that Gore hasnt hit. he keeps running into his linemens back and its not even when they are getting pushed back. hes literally running into them even when they get a push. hes not seeing the lanes and he isnt breaking any tackles.

  21. well against the eagles you have a good defensive line to prove that against. 11 sacks in 3 games…2 games really…didnt give one up against the seahawks. but dallas and cincy crushed us on the line. Alex smith has been doing fantastic without a good line in front of him. so everyone thats saying that the qb sucks…we all really know you arent a niner fan or you just dont know what the heck is going on.

  22. Ahhh yes you do, so does the entire team and the ownership! Be very thankful you had an easy opening schedule and play in the WORST division in the NFL. Sad thing is its been the worst division for a few years now, and you guys still cant win the damn thing!

  23. @flavordave – it must suck to be an Eagle fan…with zero Super Bowl rings and such. You can only dream of achieving the Niners have. Go eat your cheesesteak and be quiet.

  24. 48 hours before a game against the Philadelphia Eagles run Defense is probably the best time for an O-line to play the, “We don’t suck” card.

Now, if you go out and suck on Sunday against that swiss cheese Defense…nothing left for the front 5 but SHAME.

  25. I think part of the early struggles is the fact that they shifted to zone blocking this season. There has been a big lack of communication on the line especially on the left side. But Staley has been bad and Anthony Davis has been worse. I think it’s time to see Alex Boone in there.

Gonna need a lot of quick slants this game with that pass rush. Probably some screens and Play Action too. Well that and some more plays that feature Alex rolling out as opposed to dropping back because at least that way he will be running by design and not for his life.

  26. I’ll reserve judgement until I hear the results on that comprehensive survey, from the Castro District.

  27. You can write a book full of all the excuses for why Alex Smith Doesn’t suck and why it’s everyone else’s fault…

seriously, let it go, the dude is a bust, move on.

  28. Pretty much the whole team sucks except for like 7-10 guys. One of which is iupati. So that means 80% of the line sucks. Which means the line is at the mastery-level in sucking. But that doesn’t mean Alex doesn’t suck. He does. He’s just not the only one. We’ve known this for a while now.

  29. raiderrob69 you must be fishing for responses, because YOU have the worst owner in football, and didn’t your team sweep the division last year and still missed the playoffs? Brady will bring the raiders back to earth tomorrow…..
