Frank Gore likely to play, with reduced workload

Seattle Seahawks v San Francisco 49ers Getty Images

Frank Gore is expected to play for the 49ers on Sunday against the Eagles, although his ankle injury will likely limit him to a reduced role in the offense.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh said today that Gore, receiver Michael Crabtree (foot) and safety Donte Whitner (hip) should all be on the field Sunday in Philadelphia.

I expect them to play,” Harbaugh said.

Fewer carries for Gore would mean more carries for running backs Kendall Hunter and Anthony Dixon. That might not be a bad thing, considering that Gore is off to a rough start, with only 148 yards on 59 carries.

The 49ers have already ruled out wide receiver Braylon Edwards and fullback Moran Norris.

Frank was a good workhorse for the 9ers. But resting out in the pasture he can’t help noticing the Lepage’s van parked outside the gate.

If Gore plays in a limited role, will we see more option runs from Alex Smith? Perhaps Jim Harbaugh wants to go the route of head coach/quarterback of the 49ers. That = ratings.

Is it me, or does it seem like Peterson is the only running back that’s lived up to his new contract?

kendell hunter!!!! and anthony dixon!!!! eagles…prepare to get trampled.

Anyone else starting to think that this guy has lost a step or two? That contract mighta been a big mistake for a back this old.

  6. bossplayer213 says: Sep 30, 2011 4:20 PM

Kendall Hunter is better than Gore anyways.

    Seriously.

  7. nineroutsider says: Sep 30, 2011 4:28 PM

I think it would be best if Gore didn’t play at all. Just to let him heal and clear his head. The line hasn’t been doing well, but he isn’t seeing the cut back lanes either. He seems frustrated too and it is carrying over into his pass blocking. Sit him!

Hunter has a chance to stretch that weak Philly D out and allow the Niners to start passing more.

    Go 9ers!

A fantasy football season and I finally get Frank Gore on my team and this happens.

  9. marcsasharc says: Sep 30, 2011 4:58 PM

blessing in disguise. Gore may not be “done” but he is at least having a slow start and is likely losing a step.

meanwhile, Hunter looks like a Brian Westbrook type RB who is a shifty runner and hits the hole hard. with a OL like the 9ers have, that type of RB is better for this team. Hunter is also a bigger receiving threat than Gore.

Can’t wait for the eagles to embarrass the niners. Weak d or not the eagles don’t lose 3 in a row. They will win by 14. Just watch. The niners are apart of the weakest division in football. They suck and will be exposed.

  11. 11gixsix says: Sep 30, 2011 5:26 PM

I could probably trade him for a chili cheese dog?

  12. travisblink619 says: Sep 30, 2011 5:29 PM

As much as it pains me to say it, I think Gore is just about done. I am still glad they redid his contract, just to see if he’s still got it. And….to allow Hunter to grow into the role. I don’t want to make any bold comparisons here, but Hunter has more rushing yards at OK State than Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas both. Could wind up being one helluva badass 4th round pick. For now, I hope Frank can turn things around and put up at least one more good season.

That’s a lot of tough talk there pal.

Win a damn Lombardi before you run your mouth like that.

  15. midwestguru says: Sep 30, 2011 5:53 PM

Deep fantasy league….start frank gore in flex with limited carries expected or Plexico “Jogging Pants” Burress?

  16. typicaleaglesfan says: Sep 30, 2011 6:31 PM

Babin Jenkins and Cole will have alex smith running around throwing picks to our corners. Vernon Davis may get his but in a shootout the eagles out gun the niners all day. May not have a Lombardi at least we will be watching a playoff game or two in Philly. When was the last the niners made the playoffs????

  17. chocolatebaconbutter says: Sep 30, 2011 6:46 PM

This guy is done. Got what you could out of him so now it’s time to cut bait. Plus, he looks like a Ninja Turtle.

  18. typicaleaglesfan says: Sep 30, 2011 7:15 PM

@forever8young, tough talk? I put out a prediction. The niners haven’t won a trophy since I was in 5th grade. You sound like a cowboys fan. Because the niners were a great franchise twenty years ago has nothing to do with your football team being good now!!! They are awful and so is your opinion!

  19. nomoreseasontix says: Sep 30, 2011 7:26 PM

That extension was a great idea!
    Um…

The 49ers may not be a great team now, but it’s time to bring the eagles fans back to reality. Just like the Jets, you guys went after all the talent in vain, for when it’s all said and done, They will be watching the Superbowl from home just like the 49ers and 27 other teams. Bank on that.

  21. theysone says: Sep 30, 2011 8:24 PM

Everyone commenting on this post doesn’t know WTF you’re talking about.

The problem isn’t Gore, it’s the poor play of the O-Line. Kendall Hunter, who is going to be a stud in the next couple years, is also averaging less than 3 yards per carry.

The O-line gets no push on running plays, doesn’t open any lanes, and they’re turnstiles on passing plays.

Boy its a good thing they gave him all that money right before the season so he wouldnt hold out! Great move Whiners! Poor Eddie D is kicking himself.

@raiderrob21. It’s about 90% incentives based with no guaranteed money genius. His base salary is the same and he has to produce at a high level and stay on the field to receive any of it. Lets not get into all of Al Davis’ wonderful personnel moves

  24. travisblink619 says: Sep 30, 2011 8:56 PM

    @theysone

Finally, somebody with some sense. The o-line is terrible. I worry less about the secondary unit than the o-line. I still can see that Frank has lost something, as much as I hate to say it. It would be fantastic if his breakout game could be this week against the Eagles.

  25. funkylovemonkey says: Sep 30, 2011 9:04 PM

I’m a little curious why Harbaugh seems to be insisting that Gore play. Is it to throw off the Eagles so they don’t know what to prepare for? Because Gore seems to have lost a step and Hunter has been at least an improvement when he’s played. And against the Eagles, which is almost last in the league on rushing defense, the 49ers are going to want to run and control the clock.

But playing Gore doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. If he’s still injured then it’s flirting with a more serious injury and won’t be effective, especially since Gore’s running style works best with a full back in front of him, and Norris is out. So either he’s just keeping his game plan close to his vest, or he doesn’t have a lot of confidence in Hunter for some reason. I guess we’ll see this Sunday.

as an eagle fan, i swear i hate fans this like this^^^^ last time i checked you are as good as your record, and the eagles are 1-2 so, the 49ers are a better team, aren’t they 2-1 if not then sorry. yes based on what we have on our team we should be blowing this team out, but we are still 1-2, now this is a must win game, and talking about contracts Mike Vick you have to play better, cmon man you got paid all this money, the only one that is getting their money worth are the Patriots. So to this eagle fan, shut up, and just hope the eagles win.

  27. briank1ne says: Sep 30, 2011 9:37 PM

let me just clear something up…hunter is not better than gore. I cant believe you guys are saying that. gore is soon to be the all time leading rusher in niners history. and youre going to give hunter the crown…dont get me wrong im a huge niners fan but just cause gore has been bad in the last 3 games with possibly the worst oline in the league…doesnt mean he wont break one. Inconvenient truth…remember???

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ hate “this type of fan” all you want. I’m not saying the eagles are in the superbowl I’m sure they will beat the niners. I was the only eagles fan I know that thought the giants were a threat and could beat us. I’m objective and pretty aware of all teams in the NFL. The eagles are what their record is but in a game with Atlanta who is an almost identical team to the eagles it’s a 50/50 when they meet. Teams lose division games and Andy Reid doesn’t lose 2 in a row very often as a coach. Don’t like my confidence below me! And root for your phillies and leave the eagles to their real fans

typical post from raiderrob. you may wanna check the details of the contract before you spout off. if you had done so, you’d realize how awesome the contract is for SF and not Gore.
