Raiders down a corner for Sunday’s game with Patriots

Oakland Raiders v Buffalo Bills Getty Images

When the Patriots come to town, it helps to have a full complement of defensive backs to do battle with them.

The Raiders aren’t going to be so lucky on Sunday. Chris Johnson has been ruled out of the contest thanks to a hamstring injury that he suffered in last week’s victory over the Jets. Coach Hue Jackson wasn’t crying in his soup, however.

“Next man up. Next man up; can’t worry about it. I mean he’s out, he’s out and the next guy’s got to play,” Jackson said.

Rookie Chimdi Chekwa, a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, is the next man up for the Raiders. Compounding the worries for the Raiders defense is the fact that defensive end Matt Shaughnessy and safety Michael Huff also missed practice on Friday. Shaughnessy has a shoulder injury and Huff still hasn’t received clearance to return to work after a concussion. Both men are listed as questionable.

The Raiders defense played pretty well against the Jets last week, but still gave up 369 yards passing to Mark Sanchez. You can expect Tom Brady to test Chekwa, Stanford Routt and everybody else early and often come Sunday.

Pat’s not too happy after letting one slip away against the Bills. Bad news for the Raiders.

  5. trbowman says: Sep 30, 2011 5:49 PM

Raiders are going to lose by over twenty. Brady is going to eviscerate this secondary, especially coming off a sub-par performance by his standards.

Jason Campbell won’t be able to keep up.

  6. tdk24 says: Sep 30, 2011 5:51 PM

Starting drives at the 20 just about every time is inflating the passing stats. Good teams are going to score, and with out dudes running kickoffs back to mid-field is helping the stats in general. By the way, having CJ out is a good thing, believe me. He’s a liability back there. Checkwa was impressive and playing about the pats should only help him get better. It’s hard to get better playing the chiefs and donkeys offense twice each.

  7. steveohho says: Sep 30, 2011 5:51 PM

You can expect the Raiders to run all day against the leaky Patsy defense and keep Brady’s bunch on the bench.

  8. humboldt420 says: Sep 30, 2011 6:02 PM

I believe it was a given Tom Brady is going to have another good game passing. In my opinion, no matter what defense he will face, Brady will have a field day against any secondary in the league.

Even if Oakland still had Nnamdi Asomugha, they would have a tough assignment. So look for the Pats to produce an aerial showcase on Sunday in Oakland.

While the Raiders secondary will have trouble, on the flip side of the coin, the Patriots run defense will have its hands full with Darren McFadden. Based on what McFadden did to the mighty Jets run D, he should have no problem running through the Patriots D.

Former Patriots linebacker Teddy Bruschi was right on NFL 32 (ESPN newest NFL show, I guess) when he said New England “has the worst defense in all of football.”

So, maybe the fans who watch the game get to see records shattered… Brady passing, McFadden rushing.

  9. raiders757 says: Sep 30, 2011 6:02 PM

The way Chris Johnson has played thus far this season, it’s really no loss at all.

All I can ask for, is that it’s a good game, and that it entertains us all.

  10. rexismybff says: Sep 30, 2011 6:03 PM

The Raiders don’t care about the corners – they just want to tear Brady limb from limb. New England should worry about the front seven – especially Seymour.

Bad news for the Patriots. They are down a defense and run game for Sunday nights game.

Whoever thinks the Pats are a good football club is an idiot. You can only live off one guy’s arm for so long in this league, eventually you will have to run the ball or stop someone. And don’t compare the Pats to Indy. Indy has always has a mean pass rush, something the Pats lack.

Oakland will control the clock like the Browns did last year. McFadden will be on to bust big plays, but Michael Bush will be the man, there is no doubt the Raiders will use a lot of him to kill time.
I doubt the Pats will seal the corners on the O-line against Oakland’s speed. I expect Welker to be mugged at the line on nearly every snap. Rolondo McClain will have to step it up. Seymour has something to prove. And Houston, and Moss will help him on that line.

Brady has put up such good numbers that few realize how bad this team is.
Not only will the Pats will lose, they won’t make the playoffs.
    This isn’t the CFL.

  38. ronlm says: Sep 30, 2011 8:18 PM

Patriots will get their yards and points. Just no way around that. But, so will the Raiders.

The difference in this game should be the Raiders DL rotation. They have 8-9 quality linemen they rotate throughout their games. The OL does not have that luxury. By the end of the third quarter, those patsy linemen are going to be tired, and they will be facing fairly fresh Raiders Dlinemen.

If this game is close going into the fourth, advantage Raiders. Brady will be feeling the pressure, and getting hit. Plus, the stronger run team, Raiders, will have an advantage in working the clock.

This really is a great match up. Hopefully the game lives up to it.

  39. nutitletown says: Sep 30, 2011 8:24 PM

nobody in N.E. thinks this is a great matchup ronlm, cuz they view the raiders a bug on the windshield. Sunday you are going to learn about a new player named stevan ridley. The pats can run with any team in the league. We have a top 5 O-line and a pretty sick D-line rotation ourselves.

I know you Raider fans can get a little stabby when you’re angry, just please, will you raider fans not stab any pats fans in parking lot. please!!

  40. raiders707 says: Sep 30, 2011 8:34 PM

  41. grimmlock42 says: Sep 30, 2011 8:43 PM

It’s no secret. The pats are gonna do quick WR screens and quick slants all day long. We got a bunch of average corners and a powerful front 7. Brady does not want that ball in his hands no more than 2 seconds. These corners have to have a clock in their heads. After 2-3 seconds they have to look for the ball. By that time the WR has already decided what route he’s gonna run. Timing is everything. Disrupting the timing of a route is all it takes to keep Brady off the field. Bad throws and QB pressure wins the game for the raiders. Easier said than done. Hopefully we can pull off another huge win. Go Raiders.

Pats’ odds of winning this game are about 50/50.

Teams traveling across the country don’t historically do well.

I’m not sure about this “no run game” thing, the Pats are running the ball pretty well when they do it. They’ve been rotating 3 backs so nobody racks up many individual yards and it goes unnoticed.

Those 5 yard slants to Welker are more or less part of their running game as well. Welker has assumed the role of Kevin “first down machine” Faulk.

I’m really excited to watch this game. What a match up! Patriots fans, Raiders fans, football fans this is going to be a great one to see. #1 passing O vs. #1 rushing O. The coliseum is going to be packed and rocking. Finesse vs. Smashmouth. I say advantage Raiders: Home Venue, Aggressive front seven, #1 rushing attack. Brady, Welker, Gronkoski, and crew will get there’s but at the end of 60…Raiders 34 – Patriots 31 in the NFL Replay game of the week!

Raider Fans!!..Stop using the word “idiot” to describe other fans that are not Raider fans. We are only 3 games into the season …relax!…Im a Jet fan and I tip my hat to the Raiders on thier victory over us. lol..but I gotta tell ya..Brady and co. coming off that close game with Buffalo are going to be on a mission! Brady is going to exploit your D to the point that you Raider fans will be seeing passes to Welker and Gronkowski in your sleep!

haha look at all the band wagon PATS fans still living in the past.. That’s all they say ‘Raiders have not won in 10 years” We don’t care what happened the last 100 years The Future is Now and the Future is the Raiders…
Pats fans are like redsox fans living in 2004
This week is going to get even worst for you bandwagon NE fans..
Pats D will not stop DMC and Brady will get his 400=500yrds but he will also get the L

no mention of Mike Mitchell, if he is back, he will make an impact in the secondary.

Tom Brady will get his yards…not necessarily points against the Raiders secondary. Brady will eat enough grass to stay regular for years to come. Oakland’s secondary may not be overly impressive but that’s because they’re more of a bend but don’t break type defense. I think the X-Factor will be Tyvonne Branch…he’s always around the ball and could come up with a couple of int’s this week. All of this plus the fact that NE’s D is atrocious= a Raiders victory…. Oakland- 31 NE- 24.

    Awww that’s too bad.

LOL @ porky1976′s prediction. I hope Brady gets another favorable Tuck Rule call.
