Tebow billboard goes up, likely won’t stay up for long

John Fox AP

The group of fans that were trying to put up a Tim Tebow billboard in Denver earlier this month never got their act together.

The employees for Multiline International Imports have decided to pick up the slack.  They put up a couple of images on their electronic billboard Thursday asking for Broncos coach John Fox to replace Kyle Orton with Tim Tebow.

One of the billboard images has Tebow pointing toward the sky in uniform.  The company clearly didn’t get NFL permission to use the image, so we’re guessing they will kill that portion of the billboard before long.

“Broncos Fans to John Fox: Play Tebow!” the Billboard said.

“I’m sure there’s a lot of billboards. I just don’t get downtown much,” Fox responded.

Fox has not bended in his support for Kyle Orton despite Woody Paige of the Denver Post turning his column into his own daily billboard for Tebow.

“We have the best fans in the NFL,” said team spokesman Patrick Smyth. “This is another example of their unrivaled passion and enthusiasm for the Broncos.”

Why not play Tebow? You can have a mediocre at best season with Orton.. Or figure out if you have a possible QB of the future with Tebow. By the look of it, Fox doesn’t think Tebow is the future at QB.

Orton is clearly better than Tebow at this point in time. However, if he is not the long term solution what is the point in him being our short term solution? A mid first round pick in the draft? Starting Orton gives us the best chance to win but starting Tebow does more to answer questions about the future of the franchise which is more important right now.

    I disagree.

With a team this bad, it is not logical to play Orton. Orton is a bandaid quarterback and this team is not going to the playoffs.

Why go into the draft this spring with a top 5 pick without a clue on what Tebow is capable of?

Everyone knows that what Orton is capable of, and frankly it’s not impressive.

All of these fans would be calling for Fox to be fired after Tebow crashed and burned if he went in right now.

The best job in sports is backup QB. Whenever the starter does bad, people always talk them up and how if the coach would have played them, they would have saved the game.

Then they actually play, and more often than not, people realize why they’re the backup. Not always, but often.

Kyle Orton – Last 3 Starts

    Passing: 672 Yds – 5 TD’s – 3 Int’s – 8 Sacks for -41 Yards
    Rushing: 11 Yds. – 0 TD’s – 2 Fumbles Lost

Tim Tebow – Last 3 Starts (First 3 Starts Ever)
    Passing: 651 Yds – 4 TD’s – 3 Int’s – 6 Sacks for -21 Yards
    Rushing: 199 Yds – 3 TD’s – 0 Fumbles Lost

    Total Yards Accounted For:

    Kyle Orton: 683 Yds – 5 TD’s – 5 Turnovers (2 of them game ending)
    Tim Tebow: 850 Yds – 7 TD’s – 3 Turnovers

    Total Record:
    Kyle Orton 1-2
    Tim Tebow 1-2

One QB has 7 years experience and the benefit of going through training camps and practice taking all the 1st string snaps.
The other QB was a rookie thrown in the fire playing for an interim coach who’s previous experience was running back’s coach.

Also, just to throw this guy out there (Cam Newton), since everyone seems to be talking him up even though the only thing he beat Tebow in was total passing yards.

Cam Newton – Last 3 Starts (First 3 Starts Ever)
    Passing: 1,012 Yds – 4 TD’s – 4 Int’s – 8 Sacks for -47 Yards
    Rushing: 98 Yds – 2 TD’s – 0 Fumbles Lost
    Total Record: 1-2

Tebow needs to start. Enough of the ‘Practice King’ — Orton-ary.

Probably some of the best analysis I’ve seen yet. I applaud you and totally agree with what you have to say.
Orton has done absolutely NOTHING to prove that he is a solid QB that can win games so far this year. Denver is 6 points away from being 3-0 an 1 yard away from being 2-1.
If Kyle Orton doesn’t drop that ball on Monday night against the raiders, I believe we win that game.
Let’s see what Tebow can do and give this guy a fair chance! I’m sick of everyone “analyzing” and saying that he’ll never be able to play QB in this league. He’s done nothing to show that he can’t and has shown quite a bit of upside.
    Go Tebow! Go Broncos!

Regardless of what the fans want, Tebow won’t be playing until somewhere around Week 9.

The Broncos were unable to trade Orton’s $8.8M salary this past off season. If Tebow starts 55% of his games in the first three years, his guaranteed salary goes from $11M to $22M.

At this point, he has started 3 games of the available 48 over the course of the seasons. 55% of the games is 26 games started. With his 3 this year and alleged 16 next year, that leaves him where he’d need 6 games this year that he could start and have ownership avoid the extra $11M payout.

  51. realdraftgm says: Sep 30, 2011 1:10 PM

Honestly the Denver Locker room wants Teebow. I guarantee Dumerville, Von Miller and those beasts on defense no Teebow is a top ten quarterback in the NFL as do I. Teebow could be doing just like Cam Newton is in Carolina except the difference would be Denver would be 3-0. Teebow wins that is the bottom line and with the denver pass rush being so good if Teebow was in and Denver got leads like I know they would then Von Miller could Tee up on rushing the passer all the time. Elway (horse Face) just does not want Teebow to play because he knows the team would win and Teebow would eventually be more popular then him. Pat Bowlen made a mistake by not telling Elway you can come in but Teebow is the quarterback. Trust me it all comes back to horse face he only hired Fox because Fox agreed to faze out Teebow. You know the saying kill it before it grows. The problem is Teebow started three games last year and did great led the nfl in fantasy production and led Denver to victory. Fans are not stupid they have watched the games and as much as you want to say Orton is better and persecute Teebow Fox and horse face everyone knows Teebow is better he has opvercome so many obstacles and has no support from his coach or horse face and still performs at a high level nothing fazes Teebow and that shows his greatness even more. Yes Teebow is a top ten quarterback; take that Fox take that horse face Elway you are the 32 rated gm in the league even though you got Von Miller because quarterback is what counts and you are sabotaging you team on purpose just because you are jeolous of Teebow. Horse face you are truly an insecure idiot. Sure Teebow is bigger stronger and bettter looking than you and a winner but that is what you should want in a quarterback anyhow a leader that wins with a strong arm which Teebow has as he demonstrated during the predraft process.

  52. broncobillie says: Sep 30, 2011 1:11 PM

The key question is: is Tebow improving any during his time on the bench? If not, start him.

If he is (which we can only hope) then stay the course and get more good draft picks – Von Miller certainly is making that strategy look great. Then start Tebow next year. After this long out of the payoffs, what’s one more year?

  53. trbowman says: Sep 30, 2011 1:28 PM

Let me tell you what’s going to happen –

Kyle Orton’s contract expires at the end of the season. He probably won’t want to come back, and they probably won’t want him back either. John Elway is going to get “his guy” in the draft and Tebow will likely be traded.

So why continue wasting time on a mediocre at best QB in Orton rather than see what you have in Tebow?

All that said, they should give Brady Quinn a chance.

  54. sundog05 says: Sep 30, 2011 1:35 PM

Clearly Elway want’s to Suck-For-Luck. Both Stanford boys. Even if the Colts suck more than Denver, I can see Luck doing what Elway did (ironically to the Baltimore Colts) and refusing to sign with them and eventually landing in Denver for the Stanford love-in.

  55. blackheld says: Sep 30, 2011 1:39 PM

I’ll offer odds of 4:5 that IF the Broncos get the #1 pick in the draft, they take Luck…and trade Orton…leaving Tebow labeled as a presumable career wildcat/backup QB.

If you think the Bronco fans are nutzo now, wait til next year…and that bet holds even if Tebow plays this year, because all Tebow IS is a career wildcat/backup QB.

  56. jtbaudendistel says: Sep 30, 2011 1:39 PM

  63. isphet71 says: Sep 30, 2011 2:59 PM

Orton: Has a much better arm. He can throw the ball down the field and hit throw windows that Tebow can’t.

Tebow: Opens up a QB-based running game. Is also much better when a play breaks down.

Here’s the problem with playing Orton: FOX IS NOT CALLING PASSING PLAYS DOWN THE FIELD.

The Broncos have Orton in there to do the things that Tebow can’t do. But they aren’t actually even attempting to DO those things. Instead, they are calling pass plays that Tebow could make, but having Orton still play.

It just doesn’t make any sense.

Play to Orton’s strengths, or be honest and don’t play Orton. We all know Orton is capable of playing well, look at his 2009 stats.

This playing Orton like he’s got Tebow’s throwing ability is just… stupid.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  65. jaypace says: Sep 30, 2011 3:51 PM

Clearly orton is not the answer. If he is the broncos best chance to win, where are the wins. In three starts last year tebow won 1/3 as many games as orton did starting 13 games. Starting tebow does two things. 1) you find out what you have, although how can you judge a qb on a handful of starts. 2) it buys John fox more time. His coaching philosophies are prehistoric. The days of run the football and play defense are dead, well not the play defense part. In this league you need a dynamic qb. If you don’t have a dominant pocket passer you need and dual threat who can cause problems for the defense. Orton is who we think he is an ok qb, he’s not the worst but far from the best. How can a qb go 4-18 and be considered your best chance to win. Wake up Denver.

  66. Broncofanatic7 says: Sep 30, 2011 5:13 PM

    @isphet71
Tebow actually throws the best deep ball on our team. I thought that was pretty widely known, but I guess I’ll inform you.
The route that Tebow needs to work on throwing is the curl pattern on the sideline. Other than that he can make a lot of throws, but just work on his consistency. Which is something that can be taught.
Orton on the other hand has a bunch of problems that can’t be addressed by just teaching. He’s never going to take a team anywhere. If he was a Green Bay Packer last year, they don’t make the playoffs. It’s that easy.
I’m not saying that if Tebow was a Green Bay Packer that they would either, but he’s a 2nd year player!
He just needs to get some live reps in game situations and learn.
Mr. Elway should know that, because he said it about himself when he first came in the league, I watched the special on him when he got inducted into the HOF and he said those exact words.
Just give Tebow some time and he will be a good QB. He’s a winner.

  67. Broncofanatic7 says: Sep 30, 2011 5:22 PM

    @bwisnasky
    I don’t get your comment…
I made a perfectly clear statement that would be proved by watching the film of the Raider game.
Orton had our TE Fells wide open on a cross route in the middle of the field with no Raider defenders in the way from stopping him and he dropped it. That was a TD, and we would have taken the lead.
I also don’t know how you think that if Tebow was playing that they wouldn’t have scored any points, especially considering he had a pretty good game against the Raiders last season, which was his first start in the NFL. But I guess maybe you fall from the same tree as Merrill Hoge…
Give him a fair chance and stop criticizing something that you can’t. If you think you can criticize how he played in his first 3 games then you’re crazy. He was a rookie on a 3-11 team with no Head Coach. Pretty solid considering.

Come on, John(s), put Tebow on the field! Orton didn’t win games (when it mattered) in Chicago and he won’t win them here either. Are you just hoping to fall in the draft to get Andrew Luck?

“We have the dumbest fans in the NFL,” said team spokesman Patrick Smyth. “This is another example of their idiotic and misplaced excitement over a mediocre team.”

“As a Packer Fan, YES! Please make the change and do it before Sunday!”

Nah; our D usually beats up on Tha’ K-Dawg.
Now that Orton don’t have that Bear’s Defense backing him up, …. (grin).

    Broncofanatic

My point is you can’t say if… when you start saying if… there’s a possibility that Tebow doesn’t even have you in position for Fells to be wide open. Orton led the team down the field to that point.. but nothing says that Tebow does the same thing… you can’t assume that the same plays would have been called, or made…. so as soon as you start saying “If”, your argument loses all credibility.

As for a pretty good game against the Raiders last year.. he broke one 40 yard run… because Branch whiffed on a tackle if I remember correctly… outside of that, he went 8-16 for 138 yards and had 78 yards rushing thanks to the 40 yarder…. not exactly stats to set the world on fire. I personally don’t care whether the Broncos play the guy or not. But don’t just assume that you had that TD, or any other TD just because Fells was open….

Give him a fair chance and stop criticizing something that you can’t.

    ———————————-

Likewise you need stop giving him credit he hasn’t shown he deserves…. he didn’t lead them down the field, Orton did…. there’s nothing that can be proven that he leads them anywhere near the goal line… like I can’t prove he wouldn’t have.. that’s the problem with starting an argument with the word if… just like I could say if Walt Coleman hadn’t overruled the ruling on the field of a fumble in the Tuck Rule game, the Raiders would have another Superbowl… I can’t say that anymore than you can say for sure the Broncos would have beat the Raiders…

and the more I tried to think about your logic, the more I came up with a scenario that would work for you. Tim Tebow drives the Broncos down the field for what could be the go ahead touchdown. For reasons unknown to anyone, Fox pulls Tebow and puts in Orton, and Orton fumbles instead of hitting a wide open Fells. That would be the only way your logic would hold.. if Tebow was the one that led the drive to begin with. As it stood, you cannot assume that Tebow would have moved them 1 yard, much less down the field at that time.

I would start Tebow over Orton any day. Orton’s a human turnover machine. Or is that Jay Cutler?
