After Megatron beats Cowboys, Jim Schwartz roasts Rob Ryan

Lions wide receiver Johnson makes the catch for the winning touchdown as Cowboys cornerback Newman defends in Arlington, Texas Reuters

Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan said last week that his defense practices every day against two receivers who are better than Detroit’s Calvin Johnson. After Johnson scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns against Ryan’s defense today, Lions coach Jim Schwartz got the last laugh.

“I’m just glad that the third-best receiver on their team is on our team,” Schwartz said.

Boom. Roasted.

In fairness to Ryan, for much of the game it did look like the Cowboys’ Dez Bryant was going to have a bigger impact than Johnson: Bryant caught two early touchdown passes, Ryan’s defense kept Johnson in check for much of the first three quarters, and the Cowboys jumped out to a 27-3 lead.

But it should also be noted that on the critical play when the Lions scored their game-winning touchdown, Ryan made a bad call to leave Terence Newman one-on-one with Johnson in the end zone. Everyone who has watched the Lions knows that their favorite play near the goal line is for Matthew Stafford to throw it high into the end zone and Johnson to go up and get it. Leaving Newman alone with Johnson in the end zone with the game on the line was, frankly, dumb.

And so Schwartz had reason to gloat after the game, and Ryan will have to eat a little crow. It’s not a good sign for Ryan’s defense that with the game on the line, they couldn’t stop a receiver who’s not even as good as the guys they practice against every day.

This was the funniest game I’ve ever seen. The Cowboys will take ten years or more to recover from this loss.

  7. furtigan says: Oct 2, 2011 5:36 PM

Unless the Cowboys have Yao Ming on their roster, that play is basically uncoverable, and a 2nd DB doesn’t really help. The only defense for it is that it’s hard to execute. Anyone that’s coached defense knows that you can’t waste 2 defenders on a wideout at the goalline; that’s just inviting the run.

In all fairness to Rob Ryan; he is an immature gasbag. When reviewing his dumb comments before the game it is best to keep in mind that he is a jackass.

  11. jdandcoke says: Oct 2, 2011 5:38 PM

awesome day thus far with the eagles and boys losing in disgsuting fashion. a giants win coupled with the jets and fat rex getting beat down tonight and my day will be a total success.

So by not being the bigger man and taking the high road, Jim Schwartz gets points for “boom. roasted.”? Give me a break. You’re team, who has been a consistent doormat, is now 4-0. Show a little class and not sink to the level of a Rob Ryan. I will start giving the Lions a little more credit when they stop acting like they just won the Super Bowl.

  22. hatesycophants says: Oct 2, 2011 5:50 PM

  23. pbolyard says: Oct 2, 2011 5:51 PM

The way he said it in his interview was awesome. He said it very casually and moved right on. Its always nice to see a Fat Ryan get shut up

  24. xx4zu1 says: Oct 2, 2011 5:52 PM

Lets be honest people the Lions aren’t that good it was shown today had Romo kept his composure the Lions would have been blow out. Romo unfortunately has days like that but Megatron was a non factor for 3 quarters and yes I know he showed up when it matters but great receivers don’t get shut out for 3 quarters. He’s a jump ball receiver and that’s about it. Again they did beat the Cowboys but Lion’s fans don’t get your hopes too high you’re not going very far.

  25. footballfanman says: Oct 2, 2011 5:52 PM

boysroll where are you? You joke. Soon as the Cowbabies win again you know he’ll be back. It’s hard to even comprehend human beings like that. No character.

i actually gained so much respect for romo during last weeks game. however, when he sold out his center on live t.v., i though he was a jerk. i remember thinking….enjoy ur high right now, karma will come get u. i just didnt think it would only be six days later.

  27. thousandcasts says: Oct 2, 2011 5:54 PM

    Note to the Ryan Brothers:

Coaches like Schwartz are smart enough to not talk smack BEFORE a game and he’s enough of a smart ass to gently remind you of the scoreboard after the game.

I’m glad my Lions have Schwartz or–a real head coach for once.

  28. catchhester23 says: Oct 2, 2011 5:55 PM

Now your first real game of the year in one week plus a day. Sorry lions fans your team better get off to a better start than these last two games or your will be screwed. The bears pounce on you like the cowboys and vikings did there will be no comeback!!! Just say’n

  29. psdaleno says: Oct 2, 2011 5:56 PM

Remember the coffin game on Monday night and Buddy’s firing at the end of the Season.

Some things never change. These clowns, like their father, have peaked.

At this point, it’s all hype, which similar to 20 years ago, the Ryans actually become an issue to contend with within the organization; rather than finding a constructive way to inspire their team .

What makes Jim Schwartz any different? Especially after what has come out now. Calvin Johnson is one of my favorite players, and has even gone up in my book by taking the high road and not resorting to cheap press conference roasting or twitter style comebacks. Kudos to him and again, when Detroit plays a playoff caliber team and wins hands down, I will get excited about them.

I do not blame their fans though for getting excited, being a laughingstock year after year has to be tough. Boom…..roasted?

  50. truebluelionsfanrob says: Oct 2, 2011 6:49 PM

Umm…did any of you cowboy fans really WATCH the second half? All 3 picks were plays our D made! Carp & Tullock both made a great reads, & Houston caught his with one arm!!!! So you can stop with the Romo gave it to you crap! The D TOOK it, plain and simple! And the rest well…roast on ol’ Schwartz, I’m ever so happy you came to the real ‘D’!!!!!

  51. thousandcasts says: Oct 2, 2011 6:53 PM

“Schwartz is the true loser. A head coach calling an opposing player a MF? Truly classless!”

Yeah, because a coach who lights a fire under his players and is trying to change the culture from a decade of losing is a bad thing, right?

Schwartz rocks–and the Lions are becoming a direct reflection of his coaching. Deal with it.

  52. 8man says: Oct 2, 2011 6:59 PM

It was 27-3, Dallas! These Lions take the punches, go down shake it off and then get back up and start throwing their own in retaliation.

  56. barnesaintnoble says: Oct 2, 2011 7:06 PM

The funny thing is that people are coming to this post and saying the Lions actually aren’t good. Well, the Lions are 1 of the 2 4-0 teams in the NFL, the others being the Super Bowl Champs. 3 of their 4 wins came on the road. In 2 of those road wins, the Lions came back from 17 and 24 point deficits in the second half. Bad (and even average teams) don’t come back once they get down, especially on the road. Good teams persevere. And if you think Calvin Johnson is just a jump ball WR, you are forming your opinion based on highlights you see on ESPN. Watch a whole game, then talk. Although I’m okay with this current obsession with Megatron because Titus Young, Pettigrew and Burleson are quietly having great starts.

**********************************************Let’s see, Carpenter read the pass and intercepted it and ran it back. Houston jumped the route and caught it ONE ARMED and ran it back. Tulloch read the pass and picked it off. Calvin scored on a triple team and followed it up with a goalline TD…..Yep Romo caused all that. I admit he didn’t help anything, but the tale of the tape will say the Cowbows defense couldn’t stop anything in the 4th and the Cowboy’s OC doesn’t know how to put a game away.

Wait a minute, I’m not done yet. I know one thing though that if I were a Detroit Lions fan, I wouldn’t be coming to a board and talking smack which is my point exactly. Packers, Saints and other fan bases whose teams have actually won something relevant to the last 5-10 years can talk all they want.

But hey, good for the Lions. It’s about time they started winning.

  66. materialman80 says: Oct 2, 2011 7:58 PM

Well what “excuses” will Jerry Jones come up with to defend his boy Romo after this disaster? This complete collapse has to go down in history as one of the worst games in NFL history. I guess we won’t be hearing “hero” and “Romo” in the same sentence anymore. Keep him forever Jerry, he’s doing a great job!

I can’t argue that if the Lions keep giving the opposition a 20 point lead in the first half, we’re going to get into trouble. If we stay consistant and play to our true potential, we’ll be in a good spot. Go Lions! Oh ya… Megatron!!

  70. cursedvikingfan says: Oct 2, 2011 8:13 PM

Congrats to Detroit. Nice to see them get some wins. Also will be nice to see someone challenge Green Bay and Chicago, lord knows my sucka$$ Vikings won’t be contending any time soon.

Here is my problem with Detroit though. They have no run game which will hurt them later on. Their defense also isn’t that good and you can’t keep coming back in games when the weather gets bad. Also, the last 8 games of their schedule is pretty brutal.

Nice to see them finally become contenders again though.

  71. chells55 says: Oct 2, 2011 8:13 PM

Wow anyone watch the game? All Romo does is throw touchdowns, unfortunately half of them are for the other team. Schwartz popping off at the end of the game, what a tool. Great, your “superstar” receiver scored as many touchdowns as our #2 guy who is playing on one leg and your overhyped Suh didn’t do squat, like usual. Romo gave you the game, count your blessings that you escaped with the win. In the end you will just fade away and miss the playoffs anyway.

  72. 1historian says: Oct 2, 2011 8:17 PM

The Lions are for real, and it’s about time.

Packers-Lions games this season are gonna be fun to watch

    Nice to see Dallas lose

    again

I don’t hate them, I just don’t like them and Jerry Jones is a jerk IMO. That’s enough for me.
As long as JJ insists on being the GM they’ll be like this – not all that bad but nothing special.

    That’ll do

  73. detroitfan13 says: Oct 2, 2011 8:19 PM

  74. purplefloyd1 says: Oct 2, 2011 8:23 PM

I am still trying to figure out why the OL for Detroit could move forward and block into the end zone on that last TD to Johnson.

Do they have a special exemption that lets their OL move forward and be in the end zone when the pass is made?

  75. jimmylions says: Oct 2, 2011 8:23 PM

I’m surprised Cowboy fans aren’t still blaming Jessica Simpson for Romo’s interceptions! The Chris Houston Int was a great defensive play. That’s not on Romo.

The fact that both Houston and Bobby Carpenter showed they wanted to score (on their Int returns) more than the Cowboys wanted to stop them from running it back … those are on the whole Dallas offensive squad.

You had a 24 point lead at home and you blew it. That’s what happens to teams who are rebuilding. Blame the loss on Jerry Jones for that awesome Roy Williams trade! That helped us a lot!

    Thanks Jerry!

  76. catchhester23 says: Oct 2, 2011 8:23 PM

Tigers182- cutler is one tough s.o.b. not wooried at all. Stafford on the other hand is going to need that sling for his fragile arms. For your big win at home against kc wow… really… big deal. My point exactly you havent played a real playoff team yet. All you lions fans are acting like you just locked up a first round bye in the playoffs. Congrats to 4-0 when was the last time that happened 1970′s.

  77. detroitfan13 says: Oct 2, 2011 8:30 PM

The lions have not played a real playoff team yet. Hm, well, although the chiefs are struggling, they did make the playoffs last year. Also, we beat Tampa bay, who was also 10-6 a year ago with Kansas City. Secondly, we beat the Vikings in a huge divisional game where we have been bad for years! Although the Vikings may not be as good this year, the fact is we finally took a step that all teams must take. Dallas is definitely a playoff caliber team, so quit the jokes.

It’s about time they started winning
this guy is a total loser.look at his screen name, what the fuuuckl are you 2? your a loser and cant handle that detroit has one of the top 2 teams in the league and you have romo and ryan[now we know why i dont have a head coaching job]. you young man are a idiot. also got to love the bears fans who beat carolina gloating. next monday time to get your ass whipped

I would say that Rob Ryan stuck his foot in his mouth… But knowing his brother, he might take that as a compliment.

  81. majskinsfan says: Oct 2, 2011 10:51 PM

Awesome comeback Lions, but you know what it was, right? Rob’s defense was worn out from practicing against the top two WRs of all time. Oh wait, Austin is still out with a hamstring. So Dez must have whipped them badly, oh wait, he’s still not 100%. Must have been the stress of going up against Romo everyday. Oh wait…never mind. Awesome comeback Lions.

detroitfan13, your right I wish I could be a lions fan. It must be great to not have to know anything about football, accept my place as a perennial laughing stock and have my team win a couple of games and be happy like we did something. Ohh the joyous life of low expectations, what bliss.

If the Cowboys’ receivers are so wonderful, why did Romo keep throwing to the Lions?

Based on their o-line play, my Steelers won’t be in the Lucas Oil Dome next Feb. without tickets. So it would be a hoot to see the Lions shock the world!

    MEGATRON!!!!!!

  87. cowboy88 says: Oct 3, 2011 1:48 AM

First off, for most of the game, Rob Ryan punked your offense. If Romo does not throw those picks, you guys would have seen paydirt maybe one time. So quit your trash talking. YOu guys got lucky last two weeks. At some point, your luck will run out. You got a win! Now act like you’ve won before. Idiots.

    LOL

    Romo did throw those picks.
The Lions are talented not “Lucky.”
And judging from your sour grapes you are either jealous or blind.

And I’m not even a Lions fan.

We have won before….8 in a row now…..

    Not trash talking, just reality.

“I’m just glad their quarterback scores touchdowns for our defense” would have been just as cool

boysroll come out to play, and cowboy88 if ands and buts will not get you anything but a crying towel. ROMO ROMO ROMO. HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS hehehehe

  93. truebluelionsfanrob says: Oct 3, 2011 8:08 AM

Ok, I’m a true Lions fan. Yes it looked like more of the old Lions than new, in the first half. And no matter how you look at how they pulled this one off….they DID it! Hate on ‘em, cough up excuses, whatever you want to do….but they keep finding ways to win! The Lions are a legit football team finally! Yes most of us endured many a losing season before now, but we have the right to gloat a little! Why you ask? Because we just walked into Dallas to come from behind and head home undefeated thus far! I hope your team can look forward to the next game, because if this loss haunts them, then you might join the suck for Luck sweepstakes! This one was a real heartbreaker, huh!!! To lose to the Detroit Lions!!!! Time to move on to Chicago, buh-bye cowboys.

    ——————–

Maybe a better question would be why were the Cowboys still passing so much with such a big lead and signs that the running game was starting to work? I read somewhere else that after they went up 27-3, playcalling from that point was 11 runs and 22 passes and that’s including a few times that Romo audibled into runs. Even if you take out the 8 pass attempts on the Cowboys last drive it’s 14 passes and 11 runs and probably more like 17 passes and 8 runs when you factor in the audibles. IMO Jason Garrett deserves criticism as much as Romo. Maybe more. But there’s enough to go around, for sure!

  95. howley1 says: Oct 3, 2011 10:03 AM

You had a 24 point lead at home and you blew it. That’s what happens to teams who are rebuilding. Blame the loss on Jerry Jones for that awesome Roy Williams trade! That helped us a lot!

    —————–

Eh. Pettigrew is pretty good, don’t know if he was worthy of a 1. They cut 3rd round pick Derrick Williams and 6th round pick Aaron Brown a month ago. If you go by TD’s scored, the Cowboys are still way ahead in that trade (Williams scored 13 TDs for the Cowboys. Pettigrew, Williams and Brown have scored 7 combined so far).

  96. kbeau19 says: Oct 3, 2011 12:07 PM

whoever entered and believes this story is, frankly, dumb. rob ryans defense did not throw the two pick 6′s and last I checked we lost by 4 not 14 so this entry is completely and entirely well frankly, dumb.

  97. mvp43 says: Oct 3, 2011 3:59 PM

    Hmm……..a Ryan that eats crow?

    That’s new…….

  98. jimmylions says: Oct 3, 2011 10:07 PM

Cowboy 88 – here’s a news flash … you lost! Get used to it!

The Cowboys will be lucky to finish .500 this season and will not be in the playoffs. It’s not too late to throw the whole season to get a shot at Andrew Luck!
