Bengals come back, hand Bills their first loss

Jermaine Gresham, George Wilson AP

The Buffalo Bills are no longer undefeated.

The Cincinnati Bengals pulled off an impressive second-half comeback, engineered by rookie quarterback Andy Dalton, and won 23-20 on a Mike Nugent 43-yard field goal as time expired.

After the Bills jumped out to a 17-3 halftime lead, the Bengals roared back, with Dalton leading the way by hitting Jermaine Gresham on a 17-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, then running it in himself from three yards out to tie the game 20-20 in the fourth quarter.

Bengals receiver A.J. Green had a big day, with 118 yards receiving, and Cedric Benson also had a big day, with 104 yards rushing. The Bengals’ defense kept the Bills’ big-play offense largely in check, and the few Cincinnati fans who showed up saw a great comeback win for the home team.

Vegas had this one nailed. Most popular “upset” call of the day.

  3. trbowman says: Oct 2, 2011 4:20 PM

Gene Steratore is the worst ref in the NFL. That Stevie Johnson call was horrendous, and even after the review it’s not overturned.

  6. trbowman says: Oct 2, 2011 4:22 PM

The officiation all game sucked. Gave the Bengals a generous spot and overturned Dalton’s scramble to give them the first. You’re telling me there was enough evidence to overturn that but not Stevie’s catch? Horribl.

Obviously the NFL doesn’t want the Bills to win, and wants the Jets or Pats to be in the division lead.

  7. kkickflip says: Oct 2, 2011 4:22 PM

The Bills didn’t play very well today and Cincy did enough right to win, but the call that said Stevie Johnson didn’t make the catch on that 3rd and 1 was ridiculous. One of the worst calls you’ll ever see. The Bills were up 7 and were driving and converted that play only to have it taken away. Terrible.

  8. jetters149 says: Oct 2, 2011 4:22 PM

And the bills will be the bills let the slide begin.

  9. trbowman says: Oct 2, 2011 4:23 PM

And dump the tuck rule already. How is that still a rule?

I wish the lockout canceled the season. It would have spared me from wasting my Sundays.

The “parity” is just a tease to get you to tune in. We all know Buffalo will just be 7-9 at the end of the year.

  10. proudlycanadian says: Oct 2, 2011 4:27 PM

The call against Steve Johnson stunk. It was plain wrong. It was the turning point in the game.

  11. steeltown56 says: Oct 2, 2011 4:29 PM

  14. stanmackley says: Oct 2, 2011 4:32 PM

Stevie Johnson caught that ball 100%, no doubt. You have to question the ref that comes running in from 20 yard out behind the play to make a call that overturns the ref in the middle of the field. But the Bills Defense was horrible, unfortunately the Bengals earned this one.

Look at all the bills fans saying the refs screwed up the game. There is no way you guys could see if stevie johnson held on or not from the cameras. The ref had the best view.

Just give it up the bengals were the better team today.

    WHO DEY!!!

  20. EJ says: Oct 2, 2011 4:42 PM

The Bills didn’t play very well today but if the Stevie Johnson CATCH was seen by the ref, the Bills would of finished that drive with a FG and ended the game.

Too bad the refs are blind!

3-1, still leading the AFC east, come get some Philly!!!!

    Go Bills!!!!

  21. thrasherm316 says: Oct 2, 2011 4:42 PM

How do you screw up that Stevie Johnson call even after instant replay. If Mike Pereira was in my living room, I would kick him in the nuts.

Obviously the NFL doesn’t want the Bills to win, and wants the Jets or Pats to be in the division lead.

    ——————————————————

A generous spot? On every replay he was past the stick, even in regular speed it showed him diving and extending the ball’s nose PAST the stick. The Stevie Johnson call was a bad one. However, you couldn’t tell on the replay if the ball hit or not as there wasn’t a camera angle on the side where the ref said he saw it slip at. Henceforth, there wasn’t evidence to overturn the call. It wasn’t a bad review, they did that by the book, it was a bad initial call that messed it up.

All that being said, the Bills have only themselves to blame for losing that game. It was bad pass protection and the lack of a running game, and a complete inability to get stops in the 2nd half that caused them to lose, not 1 bad call by a ref. Also, i’m sure your right that it’s an NFL scheme to get the Pats and Jets back in first place, now that you’re onto them they’ll probably have you killed, so watch your back.

  23. buffalose says: Oct 2, 2011 4:45 PM

D was bad, like usual but no help by the Ref’s. Bills played medicocre enough to win but that incomplete call stunk it up. still. LEODIS MCKELVIN MAKE A PLAY ON THE BALL!!! dude is in position every play but doesnt know what to do when it comes his way.

  24. bengalguy says: Oct 2, 2011 4:46 PM

Listen, i agree there were to marginal calls, and they both went the Bengals way (even though the spot for Dalton’s run was the correct call)…but all in all the Bills got outplayed all day…so Western NY, please kindly go back in hibernation for another 15 yrs. Lol ” The Bills make me wanna puke!”

  25. wwwmattcom says: Oct 2, 2011 4:46 PM

  26. stanmackley says: Oct 2, 2011 4:47 PM

  28. artanis72 says: Oct 2, 2011 4:53 PM

The Bengals are a MUCH better team than the conventional wisdom gives them credit for. Even the so called “experts” didn’t realize how good this defense was. The offense continues to improve and so goes the future of this young team. The Bengals are good…and are getting better. Keep in mind how young a team this is and you can honestly say the future looks pretty bright.

The reason the Bills lost wasnt because of an official. Maybe the Bills 7 punts in the game has something to do with it.

  31. rabidbillsfan says: Oct 2, 2011 5:20 PM

This was a typical trap game. I give credit to the Bengals D, they won this game today. This is a game where an elite teams Offense or Defense steps up when they see one or the other getting manhandled. Unfortunately, the defense just leaned on the offenses rep of putting up points. I’m not going to complain, much, but that Stevie call was horrendous! We, as NFL fans, need to know what is a catch, and isn’t a catch. It was clear to me that Stevie held the ball, or Clements wouldn’t have kept swatting at it after the whistle blew. If that was called correctly, we would be in OT right now, however, I would still see the Bills losing. McKelvin needs to be relegated to a #2 corner, with or without McGee. The Bengals played a better, overall game, and deserved this win. With the way the Eagles are playing, however, next week I hope to see a hungry team come out and make a statement. Also, a Pats and Jets loss wouldn’t hurt either. Bengals, 2nd best in the AFCN? I believe it.

  32. voyager6 says: Oct 2, 2011 5:43 PM

If Nugent had missed the field goal to win the game, think the Bengals fans (or anti-Marvin fans) would be criticizing his decision to run the clock down rather than run a play to two to shorten the field goal? 43 yards isn’t a gimmie.

  33. ktravp says: Oct 2, 2011 6:37 PM

Cue the national sports journalistic “experts” to talk about how the Bills are not nearly as good as they thought….INSTEAD of crediting the Bengals D playing an excellent game and the Bengals O playing really good 2nd half….in 3….2…1…

WHO DEY!! Keep up the lack of respect toward my Bengals, they play best with a chip on the shoulder.

  37. johnnyb1976 says: Oct 2, 2011 8:14 PM

Stop whining Bills fans they didn’t do enough to win today bottom line they run up on a very good defense and got it took to them. Oh and Johnson didn’t catch the ball it hit the ground it was very clear that Johnson rolled over on the ball. WHO DEY

As a Patriots fan it was great to see the Bills lose. Thanks Cinci!

The Bengals D is good. Dalton started slow but got better as the game wore on. Green is a great player.

I figured the Bills would blow that obvious let down game. Now they have to face a desperate Philly team next week.

Fitzpatrick isn’t so accurate with pressure. I know that all quarterbacks have that issue, but Fitz made bad choices when he was under pressure. That will break the Bills spirit. 4-4 best case is looking right for them.

You gotta be kidding me…could you fathom just for a minute that the Bengals D is pretty good? Huh…ref’s call cost you the game…pay attention, without the fluke pick 6 it isn’t even a game…if you want the ref reversal, you have to take your good luck plays away as well….The Bengals have been close the last two and won the first one…they are BETTER without Ochoidiot and Palmer…they have some character for a change!

  43. stanmackley says: Oct 2, 2011 9:46 PM

    @icanthelpitimabengalsfan
i think you are right, the bengals have a strong D, and the bills had their chances, and couldnt get it done. the call on stevie johnson going incomplete did not cost them the game, but did come at the 2-minute warning as the bills converted on 3rd down and crossed into bengals territory. i found it very odd which ref actually made the call, from how far away, from which angle, and overturning another refs completed catch call. i know its done, and whatever the bills office relays to the league office concerning this play is moot.

ill parrot the fact that im glad buffalo is 3-1 with a loss from the bengals and not 3-1 with a loss to the pats. and congrats bengals, you have a good looking rookie qb with lots to be excited about this year.

  44. stanmackley says: Oct 2, 2011 10:09 PM

  45. hitdog042 says: Oct 2, 2011 11:59 PM

its funny reading all of this. The Bills got 12 first downs in this game.

1 call lost the game? Well, nobody could see if that ball hit the ground. you have to control it all the way through the whistle. The ref had the best view.

Was it right? Who knows, but we sure don’t.. no angle showed if it hit or not.

The spot was absolutely the right call, as was the tuck. Blame the rule, not the call.

12 first downs folks. 458-273 total yard advantage for the Bengals.

The Bills got beat. Go cry somewhere else. Maybe figure out why they couldn’t get a first down. Blame it all on the ref for one call.

    comical.

  46. evilscuba says: Oct 3, 2011 12:44 AM

Bills had the win! The bad call the ref made! killed the game! if they would of made a field goal or touchdown! The game would of ended and had a different out come! 48. cincinnati222 says: Oct 3, 2011 2:50 AM

For all the complaining Bills’ fans are doing about the refs. They fail to mention the fact that the ref’s didn’t give the one thing the Bengals gave the Bills. That’s points off interceptions. One returned for a TD. Stop complaining about the calls cause they went both ways. We gave you guys 7 points. You still lost, by 3. You were up 17-3. You still lost by 3. Stop blaming the refs and blame your team. Trust me, as a Bengals fan we blame our team enough… That and Mike Brown. Get over it. There’s always next week, right. Besides, check the stats… They don’t lie.

  49. swayray says: Oct 3, 2011 8:15 AM

This is what Fitz is Bills fans. See if he can do it thru a whole season. There is a reason he has never been the guy. Secondly the same goes for Johnson he will make great catches but he drops way to many. Look at the photo of the non catch the ball clearly isn’t secured and hits the ground. But you’re 3-1 after 4 exceeding expectations.

  50. wutliss07 says: Oct 3, 2011 8:58 AM

Chan said it best. “We stopped the run the first half (17-6) and didn’t the second half (3-17)” Didn’t like the play calling…Fred seemed nonexistant and he is the heart of the team, but i can’t know what they saw on the sidelines. They got after Mckelvin and he got beat a few times (AGAIN). Dalton made ONE good pass the entire game (the TD, the deep ones to AJ were all AJ). The pressure got to Fitzpatrick’s head and he was off all day (which makes me go back to giving Freddy the ball more, especially when Fitz is off). As for the calls, basically faciliated the momentum shifts to Cinci. You can’t be serious if you say the replay didn’t show a catch. yeah, don’t blame the refs for the Tuck Rule, but that is one of the worst rules in football. Gresham only had one foot in with possession on the 15yd out on 3rd that kept the final drive going to win the game. Was def frustrating to watch Dareus (and Williams at times) get blantantly held at the line, i mean Dareus gets past the lineman, who turns around and with both hands grabs Dareus by the arm and leans back in a tug-of-war pose…really??.. but it goes both ways with holding so..the Bills never got much pressure anyway..a W is a W and and L is and L, the Bills should have put the Bengals away like they did Cinci up 17-6 at the half but came out flat.. never happy with the L but at least its not ot a division opponent. hopefully this will put a fire under them and they get back on track with Philly at home Sunday.

I have been watching the Bengals lose for a lot of years and have enjoyed meeting lots of dedicated fans who travel to our city to watch their team beat up the lowly Bengals. I found the fans from Buffalo to be as annoying and rude as any I’ve met over the years. Guess the only good thing to come from Buffal0 is chicken wings.

  52. hitdog042 says: Oct 3, 2011 10:07 AM

    wutliss07

Gresham had both feet in bounds lmfao. He caught the ball with one foot already down.

Bengals didn’t hurry the next snap. coaches had ample time to see the replay, no red flag was thrown. It was complete.

As for your holding calls, give me a break. Holding happens on every single play in the NFL. They are only called if it’s outside the shoulder pads of if a guy is being dragged down, and your example is neither.

I’m sure Buffalo got away with nothing (eye roll).

Kleenex is on sale at Walmart this week.

Did it ever occur to Bills fans that maybe they were out coached and outplayed by a better football team?

Or are they just ticked off they drove all that way to see them get 12 first downs and lose?

    Surely that can’t be.

Bills have one winning record since 2000 and u’d think by fan comments they are some awesome franchise with loyal fans.

  53. dirte42 says: Oct 3, 2011 10:28 AM

i blame that loss on one person. leodis mckelvin. please fire his ass. he hasnt been able to defend a pass his entire career but he somehow still gets starts… WHY?!?!?!

  54. buffalotears says: Oct 3, 2011 11:07 AM

Coming from a Bills fan here. No matter how bad officiating is, you can’t blame the outcome of a game on it. You have to give the Bengals credit because their defense is tough. If you watched the game you can see that Bills got smacked around on both sides of the ball. It’s discouraging the Bills let them back in the game, but considering the stats the Bengals deserved to win.

  55. wutliss07 says: Oct 3, 2011 11:14 AM

    @ wutliss07

First of all, are you seriously questioning the loyalty of Bills fans you clown?? Did you happen to see the attendance at the game?? or did you miss that because it was BLACKED OUT!!

As for no challenge flag being thrown no Gresham’s first down catch, Chan couldn’t throw the flag because it was stolen from him by the refs after he threw it on Stevie’s clear catch called incomplete by the BACK JUDGE who had to run in from the other side of the field to make that call.

Buffalo had Cincy beat 17-6 going into the half and should have put the Bungles away just like they put away the Chiefs in week one but came out flat and GAVE it away in the second half. I didn’t want to go this far, but the only credit Ill give Cincy is they stopped Freddy and covered well. It shouldn’t have come down to calls because Cincy should have been blown out, but it did come down to momentum killing/changing points in the games based on those calls. I didn’t even bring up the two HORRENDOUS pass interference calls on go routes in the 1st quarter.

I’m sorry but Dalton is garbage and threw some of the ugliest balls I’ve seen watching and playing this game. Those long balls to Green were all Green, and he was going after Mckelvin who’s been getting smoked by EVERYBODY this year. A couple of your best players on offense will or are bound to be in jail soon, Benson shouldn’t have even been playing (there are other players sitting out right now on suspension for transgressions occuring while not employed by any NFL team.

Let’s get serious, Cincy STOLE a win and need a lot of help in doing so against a flat team with defensive issues.

  56. whosey1982 says: Oct 3, 2011 11:27 AM

the bengals are an elite QB away from being a SERIOUS playoff contender. Their defense and special teams are sick…and could you imagine how many yards AJ Green would have if ginger didn’t overthrow him on every pass? He is literally open 75% of the time. Crazy.

I think the jury is still out on Dalton though. I see glimpses of promise, but the things he’s doing wrong aren’t things you grow out of. I don’t consider throwing the ball poorly a “rookie mistake.” I’ll give him the entire season before I formulate an opinion, but as of now I am not impressed with our QB.

  57. whosey1982 says: Oct 3, 2011 11:34 AM

But for all of the Bills fans that are whining…give me a break. The score should’ve been 6-6 at half. We handed you guys (literally) a TD, and then threw a terrible pick right before half that you drove down and scored on…a drive that WE should’ve scored on.

You guys hang your hat on your offense, but your offense got shut down. Blame your O coordinator first, then feel free to move on to the refs.

*Side note…I love seeing the Bills doing great things. It’s an awesome break from the norm, and I’m sure their fans feel the same way ours do when we happen to be good (every other leap year). But from an outsider’s perspective, you guys are not that great of a team. And I think deep down you all know that.

  58. mdmach says: Oct 3, 2011 12:10 PM

Who are you kidding, after the first half the announcers were wondering if Dalton was still going to be in?
    He stunk horribly!
And the “tuck Rule” is total Bull
It was wrong with Brady and is even more wrong to not admit this and make the correct call!

With Johnsons “FOR SURE” Catch that NEVER was loose at all!

This game should have been a Bills rout.

I felt like I was watching “Champioship Wrestling”!

The Bengals “D” was good but the Bengals offense before the Bills “Championship Wresling” let down was pathetic!

  59. rabidbillsfan says: Oct 3, 2011 12:21 PM

Wow, I cannot believe how many Bengals fans are off their rocker. We, as Bills fans, can say that over-ruled catch was a bad call, because it essentially cost us the game in regualtion, but if that call stands as a catch, the Bills would easily be 4-0 and you guys would be saying that was a bad call.To come out and say that the Bills were outplayed by a superior team is completly false. That was a rough game played from top to bottom by both teams, so if you hang your hat on that as a Bengal fan, I feel sorry for you. I can’t believe people are on here bashing Fitz, he played a good game, one where he didn’t lose it for us, I would have much rather had him yesterday than Dalton. Our defense needs to do some soul searching this week after 3 straight weeks of being torn up. So to say that our D blows, I can deal with that, but to come out and say our offense is average and our top WR and QB are garbage is just flat out not true and ignorant. Congrats on your victory, even though only 50K people in the cincy area saw it.

  60. ktravp says: Oct 3, 2011 1:49 PM

Bills were 4/14 on 3rd down conversions (28%).
Bengals were 5/12 on 3rd down conversions (41%).

    Bills had 12 first downs.
    Bengals had 25 first downs.

    Bills had 273 yards total.
    Bengals had 458 yards total.

Bills offense in the red zone: 2.
Bengals offense in the red zone: 4.

To the delusional Bills fans on here, blaming their loss on a single “bad call” for an incompletion: get a clue. Your team was out-played in every phase of the game. Bengal’s defense and special teams kept you pinned to your side of the field for most of the game. Our front 4 defensive linemen were in your backfield the entire game. In the 2nd half, your run defense fell apart and we could have ran the ball back to Buffalo. That freed up our wideouts and Dalton started making completions downfield.

Don’t get me wrong, my Bengals certainly need to improve. Dalton can’t seem to connect on long shots down the sidelines and Caldwell appears to have an allergic reaction to the football anytime it’s thrown to him with a defender within 5 yards of him. But at least I’m honest and I don’t blame my team’s losses (which I’ve endured my fair share) on “bad calls” especially when we were so obviously out hustled.

  61. golfergreg says: Oct 3, 2011 1:56 PM

OK, Bills fans, you have a “good” offense. But then what does that say about the Bengals defense who only allowed them 13 yesterday. And even if you get the “CATCH” call reversed, they’re still only on about the 50 yard line and likely to be stopped in the next series as we saw all day.

Pretty much just have a case here where the Bengals defense outshined the Buffalo offense and the Bengals had just enough to win the games as they only had to punt once in the 2nd half.

First things first, your name…is it WUSS or WUTLISS? I ask because I really can’t tell but from the way you act I’m leaning towards wuss! What a whineazz you are. You lose the game because your D sucks and your O got handled and all you can do is cry, piss, and moan and take shots at opposing players.? Hell we spotted you 7 point in the first half and your boys STILL COULDN’T GET IT DONE! Like I told the other trailer trasher earlier, just be glad that it took Dalton the first half to get it together or you’d know what real emabarrassement would be like. Now, I know your still a little butt hurt from that lose, but it’s nothing that a little Desitin and fresh diaper won’t take care of. Now go see momma!

I was one of the 35,000 people at the game Sunday. Good win for the Bengals but try not to get too carried away with the win Cincinnati. You got lucky (and a ton of Bengals fans were saying the same thing Sunday)…The tuck rule is garbage, I question the refs overturning the spot on the Dalton scramble, and that Stevie Johnson catch was clearly a catch. That Stevie Johnson play was by far the biggest play in the game. If the Bills get the first down there, the game is over. Plus, the Bills were spotting the Bengals great field position all day… It’s pretty easy for a defense to look great when the special teams unit/penalties are pinning the Bills deep every time.

P.S. Cincyalldaway: try to learn the English language, I know not too many people in the Cincinnati/N. Kentucky region know the language but give it a try. Mastering the language will provide you with great opportunity for advancement in life.

Bengals played a great game on Defense and Dalton-AJ&Gresham are showing great signs for the future!

Give the Bengals credit … they outplayed the Bills in the 2nd half (and I am a Bills fan).

The only bad call I saw was the Johnson catch. A ref coming in from 20yards behind the play should not be over-ruling anything like that.

THAT SAID – THE GAME IS OVER and nothing is going to change the outcome –

    CONGRATS BENGALS!!!

    You spotted us 7 points?

NOT getting intercepted IS part of playing offense.

Also you can Tuuck the tuck rule where it don’t shine. You KNOW it should have been a Bills Touchdown AND YOU know it as a catch by Johnson.

Keep believing and you might not get BLOWN OUT by the Patriots 85-0!
