Mike Mayock urges quarterbacks to stop complaining

Tom Brady, Ron Winter AP

In a week when Michael Vick’s complaints about the officiating turned into one of the NFL’s biggest stories, there have been some interesting comments from league observers pushing back at such complaints.

We previously noted that former head of officiating Mike Pereira called Vick’s complaints “a bunch of bull.” And we should also pass along some comments from Mike Mayock on the Rich Eisen Podcast — comments that we know a lot of members of PFT Planet will agree with.

Asked for his reaction to Vick saying he doesn’t get the calls, Mayock answered, “Just tired of the quarterbacks complaining in general.”

Mayock then made a good point about what it’s like to play quarterback in the NFL, compared to what it has been like to play quarterback throughout NFL history.

“I mean Tom Brady begging, Michael Vick begging,” Mayock said. “I mean, you guys have it easier than quarterbacks at any time in the history of the NFL. You get paid more. Just be quiet and play hard.”

Those comments mesh with a lot of the comments we hear from NFL fans: It’s one thing for the league office to take new steps to protect quarterbacks from injuries. It’s quite another for all those steps to be taken and quarterbacks to still complain.

have it easier is 100% correct…the NFL will not allow teams to play defense anymore. the game now SUCKS! Get rid of the steroids and let the players play football. It’s like watching middle school millionaire football players.

    too many darn rules.

I’d like to see QB’s stop complaining and WR stop signaling for a flag everytime they do not catch the ball. How about 15 yards for asking for a flag you losers

tom brady stop begging? you’d have an easier time getting the sun to stop rising.

Bouya! Right on the money, Mike.

The temerity of these modern day QBs who don’t like concussions or Theismanesque knee injuries!

  6. tatum064 says: Oct 2, 2011 11:37 AM

They have to balance the defensive rules to allow for less impact on hits because defenders are much faster now then ever before. The hits make QB’s susceptible to missed time, and franchises have millions (see Peyton Manning’s deal) or Brady – staked on QB’s playing for 16 games..soon to be 18.

The rules and fines will continue…in addition to this, there are less quality franchise signal callers than ever, so there isnt as much talent to go around.

  7. melikefootball says: Oct 2, 2011 11:38 AM

QB’s have it made. They can continue to scream file and the league listens. The defense has no answers, the rules lead toward the offense, the defense gets pentalized from the QB in trouble to be able to throw ball away to fines for trying to play the game and hit someone to try to stop as well as dislodge football. Vic, it has been proven gets more calls than the rest of QB’s. Brady as well as Manning turn to the officials after a play looking for a flag more than most of the QB’s .. We have seen Manning get a call for a touch and I mean touch of helmet. Some QB’s “have had their nose broken no flag. Other QB’ have truly been hit like a pin ball machine with no yellow flags. Just play some football for a change without the crying.

Vick whined to the PRESS…which is different from (non excessive) complaining to a ref on the field. The day Brady whines to the press about non calls, I’ll be pissed at him too.

Michael David Smith and Mayock . . .

    YOU MISS THE POINT ENTIRELY.

Vick isn’t complaining that QBs being hit is a bad thing.

He’s complaining about how the Refs are applying the rules in a disparate fashion.

In other words, if all QBs were treated the same — and I have no idea if they are or not — then Vick would not be complaining.

As for Mayock, whom I really enjoy and respect, his comment makes even less sense.

He’s ignoring the core issue of Vick’s complaint: is the Rule being applied the same to everyone.

Last week we saw Sanchez get pummelled, and have his nose broken, and he was still in the game till the end. Michael Vick hurt his NON-THROWING hand and was yanked for the remainder of the game, then whined to the press that he’s not getting enough flags.

Not an Eagles hater, but Vick is making me taste my own bile,

It is funny to me that people think Brady gets all the calls when in reality out of 32 starting quarterbacks in te NFL Brady is 30th when in terms of quarterback protection calls.

They both shouldn’t complain but people are so misinformed about Brady and his “calls” it’s embarrassing. Also who the heck is Mike Mayock to call out these guys is it April Mike? Nobody cares about you until then. Maybe you’d call out guys like Matt Ryan and Gosder Cherilus for playing like crap so far if they didn’t go to Boston College.

    ===================

Mayock did not miss the point or ignore anything. Mayock was asked what he thought of Vick’s complaint to the press and he answered that he’s sick of QBs complaining in general.

He answered the question the way he saw fit. He simply wants players to suck it up, shut up and play because these players have it easier than those in history.

Can rely on stats to tell you who gets better protection from the ref’s, genius, you need to actually watch the games. If you watch, you will easily see that immoble franchise QB’s(Brady, Manning) get more call’s than moblie franchise QB’s(Vick, Rothelisburger, Rodgers). It is because the second group is moblie. Since they are moblie, they are more ‘fair game’ in the eye’s of the ref.

Shocked that Tom Brady is dragged into this mess.

Defenders don’t beg. Those phony injuries to stop the clock was all Tom Brady’s fault.

  16. habsman says: Oct 2, 2011 12:38 PM

I have never heard Brady complain about getting hit, even after Pollard destroyed his knee.

I hear ya’. Mike Vick is soft. Even worse, he has no leadership skills. He doesn’t have what it takes to be a championship QB at the NFL level.

All this talk this week reminded of Steve DeBerg. He broke his hand and had a metal pin sticking out of one of his fingers in a game when he played for the Chiefs. It was his non-throwing hand. Did he sit out the rest of the game? Hell no. He manned up and refused to let his team mates down.

  18. childressrulz says: Oct 2, 2011 12:48 PM

Mayock is right on the money here. The reason Tom Brady is dragged into this is because you can’t lay a finger on him without either drawing a flag or him coming back up screaming at the ref for a flag. True he doesn’t complain in the media about it but he sure hates to get hit and he always has words for the official after a good butt kicking.

    Sigh…

I love the Pats apologists who come on this site and disregard reality when they make their comments.

It’s called the “Brady Rule” for a reason.

There is NO ONE who begs for flags more than Brady…no one.

  21. spfripp says: Oct 2, 2011 1:54 PM

IMO I think these new rules just takes away from what ever accomplishment these QBs have or will make. How can you say Brady, Vick or Rogers is better then lets say Montana, Elway or Marino when they never had to be worried about getting hit in the chops? The only guy that played under the old rules is Manning.

Once in awhile I will watch an old game and the game was a lot more challenging for QBs in the past oppose to the present. It is really night and day.

Yeah there is…. every WR in the league. Also Vick deserves no regular QB protection rules when he’s 8 miles outside the pocket – when he’s out that wide, he’s a RB.

All you guys calling out Brady are so narrowminded..

So you’ve NEVER seen a WR asking for an interference call on a close play? Nope, never seen that….

Never seen an DL/LB complaining to the refs that they are getting held?..nope never seen that either.

Get your heads out of you a**. They all ask for calls, it’s part of the game.
