Packers make 4-0 look easy in blowout of Broncos

Denver Broncos v Green Bay Packers Getty Images

The NFL now has two 4-0 teams. Both of them are in the NFC North. One of them, the Detroit Lions, had to fight tooth and nail to eke out their fourth win today. And then there are the Green Bay Packers.

The defending Super Bowl champions are showing the same thing through four games of the regular season that they showed through four games in the playoffs: They’re the best team in the NFL. Today’s 49-23 win over the Denver Broncos improved the Packers’ record to 4-0 and demonstrated just what a dangerous team this is.

Want great offense? Aaron Rodgers completed 29 of 48 passes for 401 yards, with four touchdowns — and he ran for two touchdowns, too.

Want great defense? Charles Woodson picked off a pass and ran it 30 yards to the end zone for the 11th interception return touchdown of his career, tying him with Darren Sharper for the second most in NFL history, one behind Rod Woodson.

For the Broncos, Kyle Orton did nothing to endear himself to the many Denver fans who want to see him benched for Tim Tebow. Orton, who threw three interceptions, is far from the only reason the Broncos are losing, but he’s not doing much to help them win, either.

But this game wasn’t about Orton and the Broncos, it was about Rodgers and the Packers, who are winning and making it look easy. Last year they hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy. This year they look even better.

our communication in the secondary has to get better…. other than that, the talent is there, just gotta improve the strategy part of it.

That Decker dude earned my respect, kid had some Gumby type skills, slick spin catch in the endzone…

    In case you missed it.

Niners come back in second half to defeat Eagles
PHILADELPHIA — Frank Gore’s 12-yard run capped a second-half comeback, lifting the San Francisco 49ers past the Philadelphia Eagles 24-23 on Sunday.

The 49ers (3-1), leaders of the NFC West, were unable to slow Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who threw for a career-high 416 yards and ran for another 75. They could victimize Philadelphia’s porous defense throughout the second half, however, storming back from a 23-3 deficit.

The Eagles (1-3), last in the NFC East, were damaged by the kicking game, too. David Akers, their longtime kicker who left for San Francisco as a free agent last summer, kicked the decisive extra point. His replacement, Alex Henery, missed field goals from 39 and 33 yards in the fourth quarter.

San Francisco took advantage, with Alex Smith’s TD passes of 30 yards to Joshua Morgan and nine to Vernon Davis sparking the rally.

  13. dwhitehurst says: Oct 2, 2011 7:30 PM

Props to Denver WR Brandon Lloyd…(whoever grabbed him in the later rounds of their FFL draft has got to be happy.)

…The Packers pass Defense still has holes like Swiss Cheese, but alas, if this Offense–which is better than last year’s so far–can stay healthy, they’ll at least make the playoffs on this offense alone.

….Still fear Detroit, who has the Defense to match their Offense. Can’t say that yet about the Packers (and I speak as a Packers fan.)

    Hell yes it is Patsy!
It’s a hell of a lot better than getting pounded by the Bills.
But not nearly as nice as getting two wins handed to you on a silver platter by Minnesota and Dallas.

And hey, where’s that Bronco guy that guaranteed a win? Sayin’ something about Dumerville and some rookie?

  15. Foresight2011 says: Oct 2, 2011 7:32 PM

I might not be the best judge of football talent, but I can get up and coach a team to a loss with the best of them…I could even party all week and not spend 16 hours a day game planning and lose…don’t tell me fox and friends know how to win in Denver.

  18. teal379 says: Oct 2, 2011 7:38 PM

Nice win but as a Packers fan, I’m still not thrilled with that Defense.

Aaron scored 6 TD’s and that’s just sick. I mean that one to Driver – he had no business throwing that in there and did – TD.

It’s weird watching what might be one of the very best to have ever played the game. It’s early but look at his body of work. Aaron has a chance to not only be special for GB but the entire NFL.

And what exactly has Orton done to “deserve” to play on a better team?

Is he a former probowler who gets a bad rap?

Has he won a Super Bowl?

Is he even a decent teammate?

Not a bad era for Wisconsin sports fans.

The Pack at 4-0 and they rolled up 49 points today … so ….. not entirely out of the question to win consecutive Super Bowls.

University of Wisconsin at 5-0, crushed Nebraska yesterday …. so not entirely out of the question they could go some steps higher in the rankings.

Milwaukee Brewers at 2-0 with two decisive wins in their playoff series with Arizona …. so not entirely out of the question they could get into the World Series.

Here’s a sports history research project …. can anyone think of another single state with such an impressive collection of simultaneously good NFL team, MLB team, and college football team results in early October after their NFL team won the prior season’s Super Bowl? It’s gotta be a short list.

Go back to your first grade math glass then come back to the debate:

    Very last Denver Exhibition Game:
    Tebow QB Rating = 129.1, Quinn = 7.6
(Over 1698 percent better QB Rating) – but the Tebow haters still claim this positions him behind Quinn as the

  50. enea900 says: Oct 2, 2011 10:32 PM

Problem is that our secondary is giving up way to much passing yardage. Tramon’s not playing like last season. Detroit did almost beat the Pack in GB last year. I think GB is still the best in the NFC, but if they don’t correct the o line issues, and the secondary’s big play issues- they’re gonna be in trouble. Today’s win is a false sense of security in beating a weak team they should’ve beaten- by a large margin. There’s no reason whatsoever this team should’ve let A Kyle Ortin led team to close 17-21 before pulling away. They make bad QB’s look impressive. Teams with good QB’s and above average wideouts who don’t drop easy balls could really expose this team. NO didn’t exactly get blown out. This could easily be a team that could lose a 49-48 shootout ala Cards/Pack in the playoffs is they don’t eliminate mistakes on defense, and the guys expected to fill in for Jenkins start creating pressure.

That being said. The defense overall needs to play better. Even Woodson said as much in postgame interviews. They will have to be much better on the D-side.

For all of you who talk smack about my WORLD CHAMPION AND SOON TO BE WORLD CHAMPIONS AGAIN I say to you who sits on the football throne and is going to continue sitting on the football throne the only team that comes close is Detroit and it’s about time for them but still not as good as the WORLD CHAMPION PACKERS!!!

  54. tejano2k says: Oct 2, 2011 10:56 PM

For today, great game Packers! However, the secondary needs to tighten up a lot more along with the D-Line needing to man-up and get pressure off of the secondary to begin with, thus a side benefit will be loosening up Matthews and Hawk more. Matthews is getting double -teamed on most plays and nobody’s getting to the QB on a regular basis? What’s up with that? Offense is clicking on all cylinders most of the time and can make up for the shortcomings of the Defense against the mediocre teams. Those teams won’t be in the Playoffs. As far as the Schedule goes… For all of you whiners and Pack Haters out there…The Packers don’t make the Schedule. They play whomever they have to play. Look up the formula sometime and you might learn something. All I know for sure is, right now, I’d hate to be one of the teams on the Packers’ Schedule. Go Pack!!!

The Vikings are 0-4 and just lost to what was previously believed to be the worst team in the NFL.
