Patriots lose Jerod Mayo for a while

San Diego Chargers v New England Patriots Getty Images

The Patriots won in Oakland, but they lost their best defensive player for a while.

Tom Curran of CSNNE.com reports that linebacker Jerod Mayo will be out “a while” but not the rest of the season.

The Patriots have already lost one stalwart (center Dan Koppen) for the year and went into Sunday’s game in Oakland short four starters, with three on defense.  Gary Guyton will have to step up in Mayo’s place.

apparently Tom Curran knows how serious injuries are before even the team Doctors. The guy is a mighty impressive reporter….

too bad the don’t have the video camera going anymore. Like in the good old days when they could overcome any injury by sticking some guy off the street in and make Belicheat look like a genius cause they had the other teams signals.

I hate the Patriots, and their was some bs calls by the refs, but their offense is really scary good.

The Raiders offense is pretty damn good too, but that defense is atrocious

Another opportunity for the Colts to take lessons from the Pats on Next Man Up.

Honestly, the way that defense is giving up yardage, I don’t know what to think.

Great defensive coach and a some good talent in it, yet on pace to be the worst ever. Ever.

What the hell is going on?

  8. frankiefiveangels says: Oct 2, 2011 8:27 PM

I like Mayo, but they sucked on defense with him and they will probably be just as bad without him. Mayo’s a good tackler but can’t cover in the passing game or make statement plays. By the way Flakazoid you’re a buffoon.

Flakazoid; it’s ignorant “fans” like yourself that cannot seem to understand that alot of teams practiced this, including the cowboys Jimmy Johnson. The patriots have still been one of the best teams since they were the team to get caught doing this. Your response will probably be “how many superbowls have they won since? How many has any team won since?

Alot of teams were doing this
    It’s over
    Get over it

. . . I mean really. remember when they used to win Super Bowls with washed-up receivers playing defensive back . . . and now that they’ve taken their camera away the can’t win d*ick with a slew of extra 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft picks.

Very rarely you guys are clever when you bring up spygate. When execute a clever spygate mention, I usually give you a thumbs up.

That’s how the Patriots schedule is every year and to be honest those are all good teams but none are great by any means.

Losing Mayo sucks but how does Curran know already? Remember he said Hernandez would be out for six weeks and he was wrong about that (most people say he will be back next week against the Jets) they haven’t even done an MRI yet.

But it’s not like the Defense could be much worse this unit actually played better without Mayo in the second half. If they get Haynesworth, Dowling, and Bodden back they may be able to stop somebody hopefully the Jets next week.

  32. mrconnors says: Oct 2, 2011 10:11 PM

Seriously, clowns. They were caught taping defensive signals. Which means their offense should blow the doors off other teams, right? The Patriots offense really wasn’t very good during their 9 relevant playoff wins. So where was this big advantage?

I’ll walk you idiots through this slowly.

16 against the Raiders, 24 against the Steelers, 20 against the Rams, 17 against the Titans, 24 against the Colts, 32 against the Panthers, 20 against the Colts, 41 against the Steelers, 24 against the Eagles. And a lot of those points came from Vinatieri’s leg and defensive stops (or scores).

Brady threw for 140 yards against the Rams. The Patriots offense went 3-and-out a whole bunch of times against the Eagles, but the defense forced 4 turnovers. So two of the 3 SB’s the offense didn’t do barely anything.

So the two games where they put up a good amount of points, were against the Panthers, who were caught taking steroids before the SB, and the Steelers, who the Patriots always crush anyways. Go back and look at 2007 and 2010 to see how the Pats do against the Steelers without spygate.

Some good comments here…i too thought that Mayo’s injury won’t matter all that much. He doesn’t make big plays and in fact, he’s been out of position a lot more this year.

The defense is absolutely atrocious and what concerns me even more, is that they’re not getting any better…they have been giving up third downs and yards for the last several years.

The coaching isn’t getting through to the players…and that is a MAJOR problem. Brady better be perfect all season, because we saw last week what happens when he’s not.

Forthelove, no they weren’t taping practices or walkthroughs. These accusations were proven false. Why do I feel like I’m typing the same thing to a different idiot every day? Oh wait, because I am.

They aren’t 3 SB’s in 4 years good because their defense stinks. And as I said, Brady really didn’t have to do a ton in their title runs (you know, with those amazing signals, somehow he only manages 140 yards against the Rams, and only got that much because the Rams played prevent on the final drive), while the defense and special teams stepped up big. Neither special teams nor defense had anything to do with spygate.

  47. gimmeabruschi says: Oct 3, 2011 3:27 AM

It is good to see the Raiders becoming relevant again. It’s a team with quite a history. They lost but it wasn’t the cake walk as it would have been for quite a few years now. They have the makings of a good team and if they can get a couple of more pieces and cut down on the mental errors they will be back in the mix for the big prize.

    @jrfrom508
Way to make it personal nice and quick. You said they haven’t won another Super Bowl because the HOF defense is completely gone and they are now rebuilding?? By that you mean Troy Brown playing DB. And with all those hall of famers on defense and not a single Defensive Player of the Year Award in the Super Bowl years or in the past decade. I’m happy to welcome you to reality whenever you’re ready. Bellichick admitted he’d been taping since 2000 because he thought it was legal. If you think the Jets game is the only game they taped, you’re sorely naive.

  50. forthelove says: Oct 3, 2011 10:25 AM

    @mrconnors
Wow you Pats fans get personal really quick when people point out your team hasn’t won a Super Bowl since they weren’t allowed to cheat.

You say they can’t win a Super Bowl anymore because they’re defense stinks. The defense has been more than serviceable the past several years (only exception being so far this year).

You say that the offense was garbage even though they were taping defensive signals. I suppose this is to imply that they gained nothing from cheating. Then how bad would they have been if they weren’t taping?? And wasn’t Brady Mr. Clutch? How many clutch drives did he have at the end of the game?!

If (as you claim) defense and special teams is all it takes to win a Super Bowl, and the “crappy” NE offense had nothing to do with it, why the Ravens only win one and the Steelers only win 2 in the past decade, while the Patriots won 3 in 4 years. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid.

  51. forthelove says: Oct 3, 2011 12:00 PM

    About that offense/defense comment:

Pats won the super bowl in 2001, 2003 and 2004.

    offensive ranking: 19, 17, 7
    defensive ranking: 24, 7, 9

2007: no cheating and still cant win, even with their best team
    o: 1
    d: 4

How is it that the offense was terrible and the defense was the only thing that carried them through again?

  54. mrconnors says: Oct 3, 2011 4:11 PM

Forthelove, posting rankings of the Patriots offense (you know, the side of the ball they were “cheating” on, and “knew every call”) at being 19, 17, and 7 doesn’t exactly help your case. They were only 7 because they got 1600 yards from Corey Dillon.

Wow, everyone, the Patriots taping defensive signals was the reason they won those titles! I mean, they had the 19th ranked offense in 2001! And they scored 3 offensive touchdowns in three games in the playoffs! Drew Bledsoe was clearly cheating when he went 10-21 for 100 yards against the Steelers! Brady torched the Rams for 140 yards! They NEVER would have got this without spygate!

You asked how bad the offense was without spygate? Well, they only broke the record for points in a season in 2007 and were historically efficient in 2010. You know, without those magic signals. What a huge advantage it was.

  55. bozosforall says: Oct 3, 2011 4:26 PM

Looks like you have plenty of company in the form of New England no-lifers (as evidenced by the disparity of “thumbs up, thumbs down” totals on any given post by any Pats fan vs. any Pats non-fan). A distinct example of the fact that “majority rules” is usually not the correct means of determining which side of any argument is correct.

  60. justthefacts11 says: Oct 3, 2011 6:41 PM

mrconnor, you obviously do not know how to interpret data, allow me to help. You claim that their defense did not stink. They were only ranked better than their offensive counterparts one time in 4 superbowl years (that’s 25% for you slow patriots fans). Also you claim that spying did not help them. You must not understand football is a game of centimeters and inches and any edge helps, especially if you know what your opponent is going to do before they do it. As the historian you claim to be, you should remember that Belichek didn’t put Bledsoe back in the lineup when he was healthy because Brady was playing so well. Then you mention steroids. What about your safety who was juiced up and couldn’t guard a special teams player if his life depended on it (or to win a superbowl).

  61. tedmurph says: Oct 3, 2011 7:17 PM

    @bozo:

There aren’t enough Pats fans in the New England area to account for your ‘thumbs down’ totals. You’re clearly regarded as one of the most obnoxious, idiotic posters on this site. With all due respect to 6ringsof steel.

  62. mrconnors says: Oct 3, 2011 7:20 PM

Justthefacts, you obviously don’t watch the games, allow me to help. Tom Brady against the Rams threw for 140 yards, and the offense scored one touchdown. The Patriots defense scored a touchdown off of a Kurt Warner pass and held the Greatest Show on Turf to 17 points. Vinatieri kicked two FG’s including the game winner. Howoever you want to rank the 3 phases, offense is last.

I’ll give Brady credit for having a good game against the Panthers. It became a shootout. I mentioned steroids because the Panthers were busted taking them before SB38, I just find it funny that no one mentions this.

The Patriots offense against the Eagles sputters again, going 3 and out a whole bunch of times, while the defense forces 4 turnovers. If I remember correctly, the Patriots didn’t have a scoring drive past the 50 and got basically all of their points off of those turnovers.

That’s just the Super Bowl games. You can throw in the Steelers 2001 title game where the special teams scored two touchdowns and the Patriots offense had about a whopping 250 yards total. Or the Titans game where they scored 17 points. Or the Colts game where Ty Law picked off Manning quite a few times. And so on.

The games are there. Watch them. And I’m aware that Brady was the starter after Bledsoe got hurt. But since you didn’t watch, you wouldn’t know that Bledsoe came in against the Steelers after Brady got hurt in the 2001 AFCCG.

  63. mrconnors says: Oct 3, 2011 7:26 PM

Forgot to add, without those mystical, game changing defensive signals, Tom Brady goes out and throws for 50 touchdowns and breaks the NFL scoring record. And then follows it up with a solid 2009 and historically efficient 2010 with 36 TD’s and 4 picks. This season he’ll probably throw somewhere around 4600 yards, 38 touchdowns, and maybe 10 picks.

Yep, the Patriots offense is lost without spygate.

mrconnors, I don’t even know where to start with you. How about I’ll just start and end with 2007 and 2010 since you brought them up.

Record points season and historically efficient, you say?

I say: 18-1. And that ’1′ was a big one.
I say: 0. Number of Super Bowls you guys have won since you got caught cheating (including those two “phenomenal” seasons of ’07 and ’10).

And now you see what everyone else saw all along, “man it’s hard to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years without cheating.”

  65. forthelove says: Oct 3, 2011 7:59 PM

*Go ahead and make that “hard to win any Super Bowl period without cheating” since you guys have none since getting caught.

  66. forthelove says: Oct 3, 2011 8:44 PM

And the nail in the coffin-

The ONLY other team in the history of the NFL (since merger) to win 3 in 4 years is the Dallas Cowboys of the 90s. Not the 49ers of the 80s-90s, not the Raiders or Steelers of the 70s. The ONLY team(s) to do it are the Patriots(* see footnote) and the Cowboys.

*The Patriots were subsequently caught cheating and the headcoach fined the maximum amount possible and the organization forfeited their first round draft pick upon getting caught. The Patriots have won zero Super Bowls since getting caught despite having significantly more dominant teams in 2007 and 2010. The writer would like to acknowledge mrsconnors for pointing us towards the phenomenal, albeit futile, seasons of 2007 and 2010.

  67. mrconnors says: Oct 3, 2011 9:37 PM

Did my first post get deleted? I simply pointed out that Forthelove said that the Patriots were taping walkthroughs and practices, which they weren’t. He’s been wrong about everything so far, and it needs to be said.

  68. justthefacts11 says: Oct 3, 2011 10:46 PM

mrconnors, do you even understand what you’re saying? if not here it is:

average offense, decent defense, taping opponents defensive signals to help average offense = championships.

best offense in the history of the game, top 5 (#4) defense in the league that year, no taping opponents defensive signals = no championship.

further, there was not any proof that the pats didn’t tape the rams walkthrough prior to the superbowl of the 2001 season. the tapes that the pats turned over to goodell were from 2006 and the preseason of 2007.

there isn’t any reason to keep evidence around for years to collect dust and wait for the commissioner to come asking for them.

to further drive home the point that the pats had been taping signals for quite some time is the fact that mangini called them out on it in 2007. and he started coaching the jets in 2006. when mangini blew the whistle he said it was common practice for the pats to videotape signals.

i’ll connect the dots for you. pats get caught for taping signals and have a few reg season game tapes from 2006 and 1 preseason 2007 tape along with their taping of the jets in the opener. mangini blows whistle on pats in 2007 after opener, saying he knows it’s been going on for a while and is common practice. pats turn over tapes from 2006-07. if they only had tapes from those 2 years mangini wouldn’t say it was common practice and has been going on for a while or have any idea that it happened against him in the opener.

so mrconnors, when you try to make a point, please have your facts straight and don’t let your fandom blind you. it is impossible to dispute the facts, which you apparently know nothing about.

  69. mrconnors says: Oct 4, 2011 12:10 AM

Um, they were the number 1 scoring defense in 2003, and the number 1 scoring defense in 2004. I think that’s a little better than decent. Once again “Justthefacts”, you have no facts.

And the 2007 defense was covered up by the fact that the Patriots were getting up 21-0 on teams and forcing them to go one dimensional. Take a look at the 2006 AFCCG against the Colts, where they gave up 32 second half points.

John Tomase wrote an article (and apologized later for it) that the Patriots had taped the Rams walkthrough, and Matt Walsh had the tapes of it. THIS WAS PROVEN FALSE. HE HAD NO RAMS WALKTHROUGH TAPE. DO YOU UNDERSTAND, FINALLY?

Besides, look at your comment. “There was no proof they DIDN’T tape the Rams walkthrough.” So I can just throw out an accusation, anyone I want, and because you can’t prove it, it’s true?

I say the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheated for their 2002 title. They taped signals and did steroids. I mean, there’s no proof that they didn’t do these things!

  70. mrconnors says: Oct 4, 2011 12:22 AM

Sorry, I meant 2nd in scoring defense for 2004.

Also, the 2000 Ravens stole the Giants playbooks, so they also cheated. Go ahead, prove me wrong. LOL

  71. justthefacts11 says: Oct 4, 2011 8:59 AM

you really are delusional. where to start? in 2006 and 2007 you guys were good but couldn’t tape signals and didn’t win a championship. it doesn’t matter how many points who scored in the second half of what game. matt walsh never talked about what he had or didn’t have cuz he was afraid of legal action cuz he said he could possibly get in trouble for stealing material when he got fired in the winter of 2002-2003. harrison got caught taking steroids and we see how much that helped him. then you bring up things like you have the whole conversation, just claims you keep making without any merit, which shows that you have no basis in your whole argument. i’m done wasting my time with people who have know idea what they are talking about

  72. forthelove says: Oct 4, 2011 10:49 AM

No walkthrough tape doesn’t mean that they didn’t tape it. The Pats personnel was there and they set up the taping equipment, but years later in the NFL investigation the Pats personnel claim the cameras didn’t have batteries so there was no way they couldn’t have taped the walkthrough. Not buying it. And ofcourse no smoking gun, so BB isn’t admitting to anything. He only ever fessed up to what he got caught doing red-handed.

Look BB lied and cheated for years. He was the ONLY coach who “didn’t understand” that rule. And then after getting caught he did a cover-up. His denials can’t be believed and there is more than sufficient evidence for doubt.

For sure, the Patriots are a great football team and Tom Brady will be in the HOF one day. But those championships are tainted. The fact that they haven’t won any since, despite being dominant in 3 of the 4 seasons since getting caught is telling.

    @bozo:

There aren’t enough Pats fans in the New England area to account for your ‘thumbs down’ totals. You’re clearly regarded as one of the most obnoxious, idiotic posters on this site. With all due respect to 6ringsof steel.

    __
All that is obvious to anyone here is that you New England losers can’t take any sort of criticism whatsoever. Biggest wusses on PFT (or elsewhere). And the ‘Thumbs Down” totals can be manipulated, idiot. Not to mention that anyone who relies on the “Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down” button for any sign of validity in their life has a much bigger problem, specifically that they have no life outside of the Internet. Congrats, loser Pats fans…you officially have no life.

  74. tedmurph says: Oct 5, 2011 2:01 PM

Another brilliant comment from the guy that constantly trolls all posts concerning the Pats to post the same tired crap under 3 different screen names. Who it that needs to get a life now?

Three different screen names? What are the other two?

    Paranoid much, tinfoil hat-wearing loser?

bozosforall is the ONLY screen name that I use, teddysmurf.

You should be very proud. Who’s paranoid? You really think it’s only Pats fans that think you’re an idiot? Don’t sell yourself short, you’re nationwide.

    ___
I NEVER sell myself short, son. And why would I give a rat’s patootie what you New England losers think, about me or anyone else. That goes double for any of the other idiot fan bases here. Of course, that assumes that these supposed haters of me can actually “think” on their own, as opposed to drinking the koolade served by their respective teams. Glad to know that I really get under your skins though. Shows how insecure you really are, particularly the Pats fans base, who can’t even take it when others continue to repeat the truth (e.g., Spygate, etc).

You are nothing but a punk, teddiesmurf. Plenty here would agree with me on that one.

Raider fan here… Nice win by the Pats. They took advantage of every opportunity the Raiders gave them, which is what good teams do.
The Raiders are not quite ready to “beat the best if they want to be the best”.
    Still a work in progress…

There’s at least ONE true football fan in Oakland after all?

    Thanks!

ONE MORE than there is in all of New England.
