Cris Carter calls Calvin Johnson “king of the NFL”

Calvin Johnson AP

Cris Carter probably wishes he never opened his mouth about Calvin Johnson. But after declaring before the season that Johnson is great in video games but not real football, Carter is now doing his best to backtrack.

In an appearance on ESPN Radio this morning, Carter acknowledged that Johnson is doing things no other receiver is doing — namely, catching two touchdown passes in four straight games, something that only Carter himself has ever done before.

“Right now, Calvin Johnson — there’s a king in every crowd, and he’s the king of the National Football League as far as wide receivers,” Carter said.

Carter’s comments have become something of a rallying cry in the Lions’ locker room, and Carter said he thinks the rest of the NFL — specifically Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan – should have learned not to question Megatron.

Another ESPN analyst, Merill Hoge, followed up on Carter’s “king of the National Football League” comment by saying Johnson, through four games, is the NFL’s most valuable player.

I’d prefer is Cris Carter just kept his mouth shut. Everyone else already knew Megatron was the top NFL receiver.

Only a receiver could think that a receiver is King of the NFL.

  8. billsfan1 says: Oct 3, 2011 8:54 AM

i’ll eat crow too. I love CJ and never dissed him but in a discussion at work, i said id never take a wr in the top 5 of a draft….but he may be a different breed…..And my God, Matthew Stafford is absolutely showing he deserved the top pick…. good for Detroit. They have been down for soooo long (mixed with a few decent seasons). The fans in Detroit deserve this.

This is the equivalent of a week-long stretch of rain, and the weatherman on the news reports that tomorrow there is a “chance” of showers for the next day. Way to catch up to the rest of us, Cris Carter.

  10. camssportsjam says: Oct 3, 2011 8:55 AM

I wonder what that makes the two “better” (at least according to Rob Ryan) Cowboys receivers if Calvin is king? ;)

  11. aaronitout says: Oct 3, 2011 8:56 AM

STFU, Chris Carter. Go take your sour grapes and backtracking somewhere else because no one wants to hear you.

As far as Merill Hoge is concerned, have you watched Aaron Rodgers play this year? Johnson is great, Rodgers is playing at a level not seen before.

  12. mavajo says: Oct 3, 2011 9:00 AM

I thought guys like Carter were paid to provide analysis that the average fan couldn’t figure out on their own. So how come every fan in the NFL was able to figure this one out before Carter could?

They need to take a bus and load it up with Carter, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders and Tom Jackson and drive it off a cliff. Throw Aikman and Buck in there too.

  13. sports_dude says: Oct 3, 2011 9:01 AM

Johnson is playing at a level never seen by that city at that position. He’s easily best Wide out in the NFL..Vincent Jackson & Andre Johnson a close 2 and 3

  15. bh83 says: Oct 3, 2011 9:04 AM

Cris Carter needs to be fired by espn. He lends zero credibility and is always backtracking on his comments. Also nobody cares about his career anymore, the career that he feels necessary to reference every other sentence. Just a know-it-all, self centered blowhard.

If Calvin was on Dallas, New England, Philadelphia or any other town that the media has a love affair with, Cris Carter would have included Calvin in the Top 5. For the last 10 years, Detroit has been an NFL afterthought… even the commentators and Analysts are trying to get used to this.

  26. jonbeaston says: Oct 3, 2011 9:24 AM

I agree with Knightlines. ESPN thinks their analysts are soooo knowledgable about football. I really think that ESPN tells them that they need to make outlandish statements in order to get publicity (negative publicity is good?).

Example: Last year, when Brett Favre was injured, Trent Dilfer said that they should let him start, and take one snap, then come out for the rest of the game, just so he can keep his consecutive games streak. Are you serious? All the talk Dilder does about team unity and “there’s no I in team” and he says that? Since that day, I have zero respect for anything Trent Dilfer says. Cris Carter is absolutely in the same category.

Lookit, Cris Carter is in a competitive industry where you have to make outrageous, controversy-stirring comments to get ahead.

These guys get to the top ranks based on how quotable they become. No matter how laughable the opinion is. Better to make noise than to shed light when it comes to broadcasting.

There’s an endless list of idiotic statements from the likes of Tedy Bruschi (inane comments on Ochocinco), Rush (makes correct diagnosis on McNabb, misdiagnoses cause of it), Warren Sapp, and many others.

The central theme is that these guys are reaching for a blurb that will become the discussion of the week. That’s how they build their careers. Doesn’t matter that they’re wrong most of the time, people only remember when they’re right because that’s all their network will show.

At least Carter admitted his mistake. More than most of these guys will ever do.

What does so called Lions fans mean? Either you’re a fan (which I have been for 30 years) or you’re not. It isn’t smack talk, it’s years and years of feeling like the bottomless pit of the NFL and finally having a team worth being genuinely excited about. Any real, knowledgable Lions fan isn’t counting chickens…they’re just happy to have a team show up every Sunday with a real chance to beat ANYONE!

The people thumping their chests about the Lions success to this point are a bit overly excited, but really, why does that bother you or anyone else?

Here’s to hoping the team’s most important players stay healthy for the year…

Oh…and Cris Carter gets paid very well to make HIS opinions known publicly…and you know what they say about opinions…

We finally have a team! Who knows when they’ll lose a game & what we’ll be saying after that. But after a decade of losing, to see our Leo’s come from behind two weeks in a row, we get to talk a little! Who’s your team? Did we beat them or some thing? And yes if Johnson is king then Welker is well…..can’t think of a good enough phrase for what he is right now! Although Calvin does have more td’s than anyone else right now. Welker’s yardage is straight outta Madden!!!!!

  39. darocnessmonsta says: Oct 3, 2011 9:51 AM

Whatever he wasnt doing sh!t against the Cowboys until Romo gave their team Some life without the TD interceptions Cowboys win 30-20 or maybe more if they would have scored on those intercepting drives but hey cant take anything away that happend, just think if romo doesnt F-up we would easily be 4-0 but thats life in football qb can win and lose games for the team!!! 4-0 reference to him throwing the ball right to revis in jets game!!!

  40. tbbucs1638 says: Oct 3, 2011 10:08 AM

  41. polegojim says: Oct 3, 2011 10:09 AM

@darocnessmonsta – start posting after your beer buzz and anger both wear off, you’ll make MUCH more sense……

    1) Calvin Johnson doesn’t play defense – but he sure can play offense as your smoldering Dallas safeties found out.
    2) So you’re saying Calvin wasn’t Great…until he was Great. Newsflash – he burned your receivers in double and triple coverage… does it really matter in which part of the game you got torched. It happened, deal with it.
    3) Our two picks weren’t even remotely like the Revis ball, those two picks were earned by very good defensive plays.

You see… it’s called a ‘GAME’, it lasts for ‘4’ quarters, the best team of the day makes plays on ‘BOTH’ sides of the ball…and wins. Detroit did, Dallas didn’t. Period.

Dallas didn’t ‘give up’ a 24 point lead, the Lions ripped off the Cowboys testicles, and took it from them – in front of their own fans, in their own backyard, and on national TV. How’s that sack feeling this morning?

Now – stop making excuses and give credit where it’s due.

    ———————————-

Really? Where is the smack talk? I don’t believe “Smack” talk is saying that an analyst is wrong, been wrong, and refused to correct himself until now. If he just said “Calvin is in that range of top 7 WRs and has the potential to be #1″ (Which he previously said he believed) then this wouldn’t have been an issue.

Smack talk would be saying that Green Bay sucks, or Minnesota sucks, and I’m pretty sure that hasn’t come out to this point. (Well Minnesota might actually suck though, but they did this to themselves by resurrecting Favre 1 too many times…)

“Fan” is short for Fanatic. The Lions have just as many of those as any other team… they just come crawling out of the woodwork when they finally have something to cheer about. But Smack talk? I don’t believe there has been an abundance of that. Saying you believe in your team and think they will go 16-0, that would be crazy, but I think they have a shot at 10 wins and a shot at the playoffs, and in this town that’s hard for us to comprehend.. lol

As all you punk a ss fans have said for how long “If you’re team ain’t winning then STFu”??? Packers/Lions = ONLY undefeated teams left. Lions = 1st team EVER to come back in consecutive weeks 20 down and win BOTH!!! Calvin Johnson = only WR besides CC to have 4 consecutive 2 TD games. You want to harp on our negative records? Wait, is this the same Cris Carter that said that Megatron wasn’t a top receiver in the NFL and said he didn’t need to be double teamed? Carter must be the king of flip-floppnig. See, this is more proof that everyone who is a great player doesn’t need to be a commentator. Calvin Johnson has done nothing but dominate since he’s been in the league and he’s done so mainly with the Lions playing musical chairs at quarterback. Carter needs to put his top lip and bottom lip together and keep them that way.

There are so many great receivers in todays NFL. Cris never said Calvin sucks, was no good etc. He simply listed 5 receivers ahead of him that he thought were better last year going into this year. Obviously, Calvin is ALOT better this year, perhaps because this time Stafford is healthy. But lets be real, I’m not gonna get down on a couple comments from Cris friggen Carter. This guy made catches like the Calvin did in Dallas a sunday living and earned his stripes as an analyst. He had the best hands in his era and probably all time.

With that being said…I’m a huge Lions fan and excpt Cris’s apology:)

I think it’s ridiculous all the people on here getting mad about the Lions receiving some press. We’re not the Patriots, who the media talks about nonstop. The only press we’ve gotten in recent years is bad press. Some of us are finally excited to have a team that doesn’t quit. I haven’t really seen and “fans” talking smack or doing anything to get some of you guys all riled up. It’s amazing what people will say in anger when we beat their team. I’ve been a Lions fan ever since I started watching football almost 20 years ago. We’ve suffered a looooong time and deserve to be happy with how our team is doing this season. Sure some people may be going overboard, but most of us realize it’s a long season and we just want to see the production continue.

As to the argument that we haven’t beat anybody KC won their division last season and retained most of those players. Tampa went 10-6 and missed the playoffs by 1 game (hey didn’t we beat them last year late in the season?) Tampa’s also off to a good start this year (3-1 if they win tonight). Dallas is always in the mix for the playoffs as well. As I said before, we know we have a long way to go, we’re just excited for our team for the first time in a long time. Also, good teams win the games they’re supposed to win.

One final point, to the gentleman who said Calvin is nothing without Stafford.

Before this season, Calvin has had Stafford for parts of 13 games over 2 seasons. In 2008 before Stafford came along, CJ had over 1300 yards and 12 TDs with guys like Kitna, Culpepper and Orlovsky at QB. In 2010 Calvin had an 1100 yard season with 12. Stafford played only 3 games. In those 3 games CJ had 1 game with 3TDs (none in the other 2) and 159 yards. Leaving 9 TDs and 1000 yards in the games without Matt and with Shaun Hill and Drew Stanton.

it was a joke. when cris carter was cut from the eagles by Buddy Ryan in the 80’s he said it was because HE ONLY CAUGHT TOUCHDOWN PASSES. Carter then of course went on to have a HOF career and admitted Buddy Ryan, as a players coach like his son Rex was cutting Carter because he was having drug and alcohol problems and needed a change of scenery.

Calvin Johnson may not just be the best WR in the league, he MAY go on to be the best WR in league history – he is like Randy Moss but with heart. The guy has played on some of the worst teams with a revolving door and QB and never openly complained. Guess Matt Millen did one thing right.

btw – congrats to the lions fans. you deserve a good team. give cris carter a break. he has a ton of guys breathing down his neck for a job he isn’t a natural at and at least he didn’t rip his former coaches and teammates ala tiki.

@mhalt99. Very well said, and a class way of stating your case!

It’s kind a of funny listening to you so called lions fans talk smack. You clowns haven’t said a word in 20 years & now that the lions have 4 wins you think you deserve to talk smack. Just cause the lions have as many wins as the did in the last 4 years doesn’t mean sh!t. I bet anything you motor city scum of the earth fans won’t be talking any smack but the end of the year!!!!

GTFOH you ass clown… I’m so glad your team has never sucked before and you never had any reason to get excited since they win every game ever played… go hug your pillow pet you jackwagon!

Aaron Rodgers is MVP hands down. Calvin wants that title he must win a SB. That ain’t happening anytime soon. They still have not played anyone decent. Bears will beat them next Monday night I guaranty it.

Sick and tired of the whole “haven’t played anybody good yet” “go beat dallas and the we’ll talk”… I say bull crap to all you! A win is a win is a win… Go away with that nonsense!

Bout time these pathetic losers are any good!!! What was it 20 years?? Now the fan base has a hard on. YOU WERE LUCKY TO BEAT THE PATHETIC VIKINGS!!

To all the non-Green Bay fan Lions haters out there…

The Lions will beat your team this year, too. And that last pathetic bit of self worth you had remaining – the one that had you telling yourselves “at least my team can beat the Lions” – will finally die inside; leaving you a cold, delusion-less cinder of self-loathing.

The only fans that should be allowed to talk smack on the Lions boards right now are Green Bay fans; but they are a surprisingly decent bunch of people so I can’t hate. I’ll just say good luck and hope the Lions can win because Green Bay appears to be unstoppable right now.
